8 Habló Eliseo a aquella mujer a cuyo hijo él había hecho vivir,(A) diciendo: Levántate, vete tú y toda tu casa a vivir donde puedas; porque Jehová ha llamado el hambre, la cual vendrá sobre la tierra por siete años. 2 Entonces la mujer se levantó, e hizo como el varón de Dios le dijo; y se fue ella con su familia, y vivió en tierra de los filisteos siete años. 3 Y cuando habían pasado los siete años, la mujer volvió de la tierra de los filisteos; después salió para implorar al rey por su casa y por sus tierras. 4 Y había el rey hablado con Giezi, criado del varón de Dios, diciéndole: Te ruego que me cuentes todas las maravillas que ha hecho Eliseo. 5 Y mientras él estaba contando al rey cómo había hecho vivir a un muerto, he aquí que la mujer, a cuyo hijo él había hecho vivir, vino para implorar al rey por su casa y por sus tierras. Entonces dijo Giezi: Rey señor mío, esta es la mujer, y este es su hijo, al cual Eliseo hizo vivir. 6 Y preguntando el rey a la mujer, ella se lo contó. Entonces el rey ordenó a un oficial, al cual dijo: Hazle devolver todas las cosas que eran suyas, y todos los frutos de sus tierras desde el día que dejó el país hasta ahora.

Hazael reina en Siria

7 Eliseo se fue luego a Damasco; y Ben-adad rey de Siria estaba enfermo, al cual dieron aviso, diciendo: El varón de Dios ha venido aquí. 8 Y el rey dijo a Hazael: Toma en tu mano un presente, y ve a recibir al varón de Dios, y consulta por él a Jehová, diciendo: ¿Sanaré de esta enfermedad? 9 Tomó, pues, Hazael en su mano un presente de entre los bienes de Damasco, cuarenta camellos cargados, y fue a su encuentro, y llegando se puso delante de él, y dijo: Tu hijo Ben-adad rey de Siria me ha enviado a ti, diciendo: ¿Sanaré de esta enfermedad? 10 Y Eliseo le dijo: Ve, dile: Seguramente sanarás. Sin embargo, Jehová me ha mostrado que él morirá ciertamente. 11 Y el varón de Dios le miró fijamente, y estuvo así hasta hacerlo ruborizarse; luego lloró el varón de Dios. 12 Entonces le dijo Hazael: ¿Por qué llora mi señor? Y él respondió: Porque sé el mal que harás a los hijos de Israel; a sus fortalezas pegarás fuego, a sus jóvenes matarás a espada, y estrellarás a sus niños, y abrirás el vientre a sus mujeres que estén encintas. 13 Y Hazael dijo: Pues, ¿qué es tu siervo, este perro, para que haga tan grandes cosas? Y respondió Eliseo: Jehová me ha mostrado que tú serás rey de Siria.(B) 14 Y Hazael se fue, y vino a su señor, el cual le dijo: ¿Qué te ha dicho Eliseo? Y él respondió: Me dijo que seguramente sanarás. 15 El día siguiente, tomó un paño y lo metió en agua, y lo puso sobre el rostro de Ben-adad, y murió; y reinó Hazael en su lugar.

Reinado de Joram de Judá

(2 Cr. 21.1-20)

16 En el quinto año de Joram hijo de Acab, rey de Israel, y siendo Josafat rey de Judá, comenzó a reinar Joram hijo de Josafat, rey de Judá. 17 De treinta y dos años era cuando comenzó a reinar, y ocho años reinó en Jerusalén. 18 Y anduvo en el camino de los reyes de Israel, como hizo la casa de Acab, porque una hija de Acab fue su mujer; e hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová. 19 Con todo eso, Jehová no quiso destruir a Judá, por amor a David su siervo, porque había prometido darle lámpara a él y a sus hijos perpetuamente.(C)

20 En el tiempo de él se rebeló Edom contra el dominio de Judá,(D) y pusieron rey sobre ellos. 21 Joram, por tanto, pasó a Zair, y todos sus carros con él; y levantándose de noche atacó a los de Edom, los cuales le habían sitiado, y a los capitanes de los carros; y el pueblo huyó a sus tiendas. 22 No obstante, Edom se libertó del dominio de Judá, hasta hoy. También se rebeló Libna en el mismo tiempo. 23 Los demás hechos de Joram, y todo lo que hizo, ¿no están escritos en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? 24 Y durmió Joram con sus padres, y fue sepultado con ellos en la ciudad de David; y reinó en lugar suyo Ocozías, su hijo.

Reinado de Ocozías de Judá

(2 Cr. 22.1-6)

25 En el año doce de Joram hijo de Acab, rey de Israel, comenzó a reinar Ocozías hijo de Joram, rey de Judá. 26 De veintidós años era Ocozías cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó un año en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Atalía, hija de Omri rey de Israel. 27 Anduvo en el camino de la casa de Acab, e hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, como la casa de Acab; porque era yerno de la casa de Acab.

28 Y fue a la guerra con Joram hijo de Acab a Ramot de Galaad, contra Hazael rey de Siria; y los sirios hirieron a Joram. 29 Y el rey Joram se volvió a Jezreel para curarse de las heridas que los sirios le hicieron frente a Ramot, cuando peleó contra Hazael rey de Siria. Y descendió Ocozías hijo de Joram rey de Judá, a visitar a Joram hijo de Acab en Jezreel, porque estaba enfermo.

Jehú es ungido rey de Israel

9 Entonces el profeta Eliseo llamó a uno de los hijos de los profetas, y le dijo: Ciñe tus lomos, y toma esta redoma de aceite en tu mano, y ve a Ramot de Galaad. 2 Cuando llegues allá, verás allí a Jehú hijo de Josafat hijo de Nimsi; y entrando, haz que se levante de entre sus hermanos, y llévalo a la cámara. 3 Toma luego la redoma de aceite, y derrámala sobre su cabeza y di: Así dijo Jehová: Yo te he ungido por rey sobre Israel. Y abriendo la puerta, echa a huir, y no esperes.

4 Fue, pues, el joven, el profeta, a Ramot de Galaad. 5 Cuando él entró, he aquí los príncipes del ejército que estaban sentados. Y él dijo: Príncipe, una palabra tengo que decirte. Jehú dijo: ¿A cuál de todos nosotros? Y él dijo: A ti, príncipe. 6 Y él se levantó, y entró en casa; y el otro derramó el aceite sobre su cabeza, y le dijo: Así dijo Jehová Dios de Israel: Yo te he ungido por rey sobre Israel, pueblo de Jehová.(E) 7 Herirás la casa de Acab tu señor, para que yo vengue la sangre de mis siervos los profetas, y la sangre de todos los siervos de Jehová, de la mano de Jezabel. 8 Y perecerá toda la casa de Acab, y destruiré de Acab todo varón, así al siervo como al libre en Israel. 9 Y yo pondré la casa de Acab como la casa de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, y como la casa de Baasa hijo de Ahías. 10 Y a Jezabel la comerán los perros en el campo de Jezreel,(F) y no habrá quien la sepulte. En seguida abrió la puerta, y echó a huir.

11 Después salió Jehú a los siervos de su señor, y le dijeron: ¿Hay paz? ¿Para qué vino a ti aquel loco? Y él les dijo: Vosotros conocéis al hombre y sus palabras. 12 Ellos dijeron: Mentira; decláranoslo ahora. Y él dijo: Así y así me habló, diciendo: Así ha dicho Jehová: Yo te he ungido por rey sobre Israel. 13 Entonces cada uno tomó apresuradamente su manto, y lo puso debajo de Jehú en un trono alto, y tocaron corneta, y dijeron: Jehú es rey.

Jehú mata a Joram

14 Así conspiró Jehú hijo de Josafat, hijo de Nimsi, contra Joram. (Estaba entonces Joram guardando a Ramot de Galaad con todo Israel, por causa de Hazael rey de Siria; 15 pero se había vuelto el rey Joram a Jezreel, para curarse de las heridas que los sirios le habían hecho, peleando contra Hazael rey de Siria.) Y Jehú dijo: Si es vuestra voluntad, ninguno escape de la ciudad, para ir a dar las nuevas en Jezreel. 16 Entonces Jehú cabalgó y fue a Jezreel, porque Joram estaba allí enfermo. También estaba Ocozías rey de Judá, que había descendido a visitar a Joram.

17 Y el atalaya que estaba en la torre de Jezreel vio la tropa de Jehú que venía, y dijo: Veo una tropa. Y Joram dijo: Ordena a un jinete que vaya a reconocerlos, y les diga: ¿Hay paz? 18 Fue, pues, el jinete a reconocerlos, y dijo: El rey dice así: ¿Hay paz? Y Jehú le dijo: ¿Qué tienes tú que ver con la paz? Vuélvete conmigo. El atalaya dio luego aviso, diciendo: El mensajero llegó hasta ellos, y no vuelve. 19 Entonces envió otro jinete, el cual llegando a ellos, dijo: El rey dice así: ¿Hay paz? Y Jehú respondió: ¿Qué tienes tú que ver con la paz? Vuélvete conmigo. 20 El atalaya volvió a decir: También este llegó a ellos y no vuelve; y el marchar del que viene es como el marchar de Jehú hijo de Nimsi, porque viene impetuosamente.

21 Entonces Joram dijo: Unce el carro. Y cuando estaba uncido su carro, salieron Joram rey de Israel y Ocozías rey de Judá, cada uno en su carro, y salieron a encontrar a Jehú, al cual hallaron en la heredad de Nabot de Jezreel. 22 Cuando vio Joram a Jehú, dijo: ¿Hay paz, Jehú? Y él respondió: ¿Qué paz, con las fornicaciones de Jezabel tu madre, y sus muchas hechicerías? 23 Entonces Joram volvió las riendas y huyó, y dijo a Ocozías: ¡Traición, Ocozías! 24 Pero Jehú entesó su arco, e hirió a Joram entre las espaldas; y la saeta salió por su corazón, y él cayó en su carro. 25 Dijo luego Jehú a Bidcar su capitán: Tómalo, y échalo a un extremo de la heredad de Nabot de Jezreel. Acuérdate que cuando tú y yo íbamos juntos con la gente de Acab su padre, Jehová pronunció esta sentencia sobre él, diciendo: 26 Que yo he visto ayer la sangre de Nabot, y la sangre de sus hijos, dijo Jehová; y te daré la paga en esta heredad, dijo Jehová.(G) Tómalo pues, ahora, y échalo en la heredad de Nabot, conforme a la palabra de Jehová.

Jehú mata a Ocozías

(2 Cr. 22.7-9)

27 Viendo esto Ocozías rey de Judá, huyó por el camino de la casa del huerto. Y lo siguió Jehú, diciendo: Herid también a este en el carro. Y le hirieron a la subida de Gur, junto a Ibleam. Y Ocozías huyó a Meguido, pero murió allí. 28 Y sus siervos le llevaron en un carro a Jerusalén, y allá le sepultaron con sus padres, en su sepulcro en la ciudad de David.

29 En el undécimo año de Joram hijo de Acab, comenzó a reinar Ocozías sobre Judá.

Muerte de Jezabel

30 Vino después Jehú a Jezreel; y cuando Jezabel lo oyó, se pintó los ojos con antimonio, y atavió su cabeza, y se asomó a una ventana. 31 Y cuando entraba Jehú por la puerta, ella dijo: ¿Sucedió bien a Zimri, que mató a su señor? 32 Alzando él entonces su rostro hacia la ventana, dijo: ¿Quién está conmigo? ¿quién? Y se inclinaron hacia él dos o tres eunucos. 33 Y él les dijo: Echadla abajo. Y ellos la echaron; y parte de su sangre salpicó en la pared, y en los caballos; y él la atropelló. 34 Entró luego, y después que comió y bebió, dijo: Id ahora a ver a aquella maldita, y sepultadla, pues es hija de rey. 35 Pero cuando fueron para sepultarla, no hallaron de ella más que la calavera, y los pies, y las palmas de las manos. 36 Y volvieron, y se lo dijeron. Y él dijo: Esta es la palabra de Dios, la cual él habló por medio de su siervo Elías tisbita, diciendo: En la heredad de Jezreel comerán los perros las carnes de Jezabel,(H) 37 y el cuerpo de Jezabel será como estiércol sobre la faz de la tierra en la heredad de Jezreel, de manera que nadie pueda decir: Esta es Jezabel.

Jehú extermina la casa de Acab

10 Tenía Acab en Samaria setenta hijos; y Jehú escribió cartas y las envió a Samaria a los principales de Jezreel, a los ancianos y a los ayos de Acab, diciendo: 2 Inmediatamente que lleguen estas cartas a vosotros los que tenéis a los hijos de vuestro señor, y los que tienen carros y gente de a caballo, la ciudad fortificada, y las armas, 3 escoged al mejor y al más recto de los hijos de vuestro señor, y ponedlo en el trono de su padre, y pelead por la casa de vuestro señor. 4 Pero ellos tuvieron gran temor, y dijeron: He aquí, dos reyes no pudieron resistirle; ¿cómo le resistiremos nosotros? 5 Y el mayordomo, el gobernador de la ciudad, los ancianos y los ayos enviaron a decir a Jehú: Siervos tuyos somos, y haremos todo lo que nos mandes; no elegiremos por rey a ninguno, haz lo que bien te parezca. 6 Él entonces les escribió la segunda vez, diciendo: Si sois míos, y queréis obedecerme, tomad las cabezas de los hijos varones de vuestro señor, y venid a mí mañana a esta hora, a Jezreel. Y los hijos del rey, setenta varones, estaban con los principales de la ciudad, que los criaban. 7 Cuando las cartas llegaron a ellos, tomaron a los hijos del rey, y degollaron a los setenta varones, y pusieron sus cabezas en canastas, y se las enviaron a Jezreel. 8 Y vino un mensajero que le dio las nuevas, diciendo: Han traído las cabezas de los hijos del rey. Y él le dijo: Ponedlas en dos montones a la entrada de la puerta hasta la mañana. 9 Venida la mañana, salió él, y estando en pie dijo a todo el pueblo: Vosotros sois justos; he aquí yo he conspirado contra mi señor, y le he dado muerte; pero ¿quién ha dado muerte a todos estos? 10 Sabed ahora que de la palabra que Jehová habló sobre la casa de Acab, nada caerá en tierra; y que Jehová ha hecho lo que dijo por su siervo Elías. 11 Mató entonces Jehú a todos los que habían quedado de la casa de Acab en Jezreel,(I) a todos sus príncipes, a todos sus familiares, y a sus sacerdotes, hasta que no quedó ninguno.

12 Luego se levantó de allí para ir a Samaria; y en el camino llegó a una casa de esquileo de pastores. 13 Y halló allí a los hermanos de Ocozías rey de Judá, y les dijo: ¿Quiénes sois vosotros? Y ellos dijeron: Somos hermanos de Ocozías, y hemos venido a saludar a los hijos del rey, y a los hijos de la reina. 14 Entonces él dijo: Prendedlos vivos. Y después que los tomaron vivos, los degollaron junto al pozo de la casa de esquileo, cuarenta y dos varones, sin dejar ninguno de ellos.

15 Yéndose luego de allí, se encontró con Jonadab hijo de Recab; y después que lo hubo saludado, le dijo: ¿Es recto tu corazón, como el mío es recto con el tuyo? Y Jonadab dijo: Lo es. Pues que lo es, dame la mano. Y él le dio la mano. Luego lo hizo subir consigo en el carro, 16 y le dijo: Ven conmigo, y verás mi celo por Jehová. Lo pusieron, pues, en su carro. 17 Y luego que Jehú hubo llegado a Samaria, mató a todos los que habían quedado de Acab en Samaria, hasta exterminarlos, conforme a la palabra de Jehová, que había hablado por Elías.

Jehú extermina el culto de Baal

18 Después reunió Jehú a todo el pueblo, y les dijo: Acab sirvió poco a Baal, mas Jehú lo servirá mucho. 19 Llamadme, pues, luego a todos los profetas de Baal, a todos sus siervos y a todos sus sacerdotes; que no falte uno, porque tengo un gran sacrificio para Baal; cualquiera que faltare no vivirá. Esto hacía Jehú con astucia, para exterminar a los que honraban a Baal. 20 Y dijo Jehú: Santificad un día solemne a Baal. Y ellos convocaron. 21 Y envió Jehú por todo Israel, y vinieron todos los siervos de Baal, de tal manera que no hubo ninguno que no viniese. Y entraron en el templo de Baal, y el templo de Baal se llenó de extremo a extremo. 22 Entonces dijo al que tenía el cargo de las vestiduras: Saca vestiduras para todos los siervos de Baal. Y él les sacó vestiduras. 23 Y entró Jehú con Jonadab hijo de Recab en el templo de Baal, y dijo a los siervos de Baal: Mirad y ved que no haya aquí entre vosotros alguno de los siervos de Jehová, sino solo los siervos de Baal.

24 Y cuando ellos entraron para hacer sacrificios y holocaustos, Jehú puso fuera a ochenta hombres, y les dijo: Cualquiera que dejare vivo a alguno de aquellos hombres que yo he puesto en vuestras manos, su vida será por la del otro. 25 Y después que acabaron ellos de hacer el holocausto, Jehú dijo a los de su guardia y a los capitanes: Entrad, y matadlos; que no escape ninguno. Y los mataron a espada, y los dejaron tendidos los de la guardia y los capitanes. Y fueron hasta el lugar santo del templo de Baal, 26 y sacaron las estatuas del templo de Baal, y las quemaron. 27 Y quebraron la estatua de Baal, y derribaron el templo de Baal, y lo convirtieron en letrinas hasta hoy.

28 Así exterminó Jehú a Baal de Israel. 29 Con todo eso, Jehú no se apartó de los pecados de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, que hizo pecar a Israel; y dejó en pie los becerros de oro que estaban en Bet-el y en Dan.(J) 30 Y Jehová dijo a Jehú: Por cuanto has hecho bien ejecutando lo recto delante de mis ojos, e hiciste a la casa de Acab conforme a todo lo que estaba en mi corazón, tus hijos se sentarán sobre el trono de Israel hasta la cuarta generación. 31 Mas Jehú no cuidó de andar en la ley de Jehová Dios de Israel con todo su corazón, ni se apartó de los pecados de Jeroboam, el que había hecho pecar a Israel.

32 En aquellos días comenzó Jehová a cercenar el territorio de Israel; y los derrotó Hazael por todas las fronteras, 33 desde el Jordán al nacimiento del sol, toda la tierra de Galaad, de Gad, de Rubén y de Manasés, desde Aroer que está junto al arroyo de Arnón, hasta Galaad y Basán. 34 Los demás hechos de Jehú, y todo lo que hizo, y toda su valentía, ¿no está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel? 35 Y durmió Jehú con sus padres, y lo sepultaron en Samaria; y reinó en su lugar Joacaz su hijo. 36 El tiempo que reinó Jehú sobre Israel en Samaria fue de veintiocho años.

Jehoram Restores the Shunammite’s Land

8 Now (A)Elisha spoke to the woman whose son he had restored to life, saying, “Arise and go [a]with your household, and live wherever you can live; for the (B)Lord has called for a famine, and (C)it will indeed come on the land for seven years.” 2 So the woman arose and acted in accordance with the word of the man of God: she went with her household and resided in the land of the Philistines for seven years. 3 Then at the end of seven years, the woman returned from the land of the Philistines; and she went to [b]appeal to the king for her house and for her field. 4 Now the king was speaking with (D)Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, saying, “Please report to me all the great things that Elisha has done.” 5 And as he was reporting to the king (E)how he had restored to life the one who was dead, behold, the woman whose son he had restored to life [c]appealed to the king for her house and for her field. And Gehazi said, “My lord the king, this is the woman and this is her son, whom Elisha restored to life.” 6 When the king asked the woman, she told everything to him. So the king appointed an officer for her, saying, “Restore all that was hers and all the produce of the field from the day that she left the land even until now.”

Elisha Predicts Evil from Hazael

7 Then Elisha came to (F)Damascus. Now (G)Ben-hadad, the king of Aram, was sick, and it was told to him, saying, “(H)The man of God has come here.” 8 And the king said to (I)Hazael, “(J)Take a gift in your hand and go to meet the man of God, and (K)inquire of the Lord by him, saying, ‘Will I recover from this sickness?’” 9 So Hazael went to meet him and took a gift in his hand, even every kind of good thing of Damascus, forty camels’ loads; and he came and stood before him and said, “(L)Your son Ben-hadad king of Aram has sent me to you, saying, ‘Will I recover from this sickness?’” 10 Then Elisha said to him, “(M)Go, say to him, ‘You will certainly recover’; but the (N)Lord has shown me that he will certainly die.” 11 And he [d]stared steadily at him (O)until Hazael was embarrassed, and then (P)the man of God wept. 12 And Hazael said, “Why is my lord weeping?” And he [e]answered, “Because (Q)I know the evil that you will do to the sons of Israel: you will set their fortified cities on fire, you will kill their young men with the sword, their little ones you (R)will smash to pieces, and you will rip up their pregnant women.” 13 Then Hazael said, “But what is your servant—(S)a lowly dog—that he could do this great thing?” And Elisha [f]answered, “(T)The Lord has shown me that you will be king over Aram.” 14 So he left Elisha and came to his master, who said to him, “What did Elisha say to you?” And he [g]answered, “He told me that (U)you would certainly recover.” 15 But on the following day, he took the [h]cover and dipped it in water, and spread it over his face, (V)so that he died. And Hazael became king in his place.

Another Jehoram Reigns in Judah

16 Now in the fifth year of (W)Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel, when Jehoshaphat was the king of Judah, Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah became king. 17 He was (X)thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned for eight years in Jerusalem. 18 He walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for (Y)Ahab’s daughter was his wife; and he did evil in the sight of the Lord. 19 However, the Lord did not want to destroy Judah, for the sake of David His servant, (Z)since He had [i]promised him to give him a [j]lamp through his sons always.

20 In his days (AA)Edom broke away from the [k]rule of Judah, and appointed a king over themselves. 21 Then Joram crossed over to Zair, and all his chariots with him. And he got up at night and struck the Edomites who had surrounded him and the captains of the chariots; (AB)but [l]his army fled to their tents. 22 (AC)So Edom has broken away from [m]Judah to this day. Then (AD)Libnah broke away at the same time. 23 Now the rest of the acts of Joram and everything that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?

Ahaziah Succeeds Jehoram in Judah

24 So Joram [n]lay down with his fathers and (AE)was buried with his fathers in the city of David; and his son (AF)Ahaziah became king in his place.

25 (AG)In the twelfth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign. 26 (AH)Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned for one year in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Athaliah the granddaughter of Omri king of Israel. 27 (AI)He walked in the way of the house of Ahab and did evil in the sight of the Lord, like the house of Ahab, because he was a son-in-law of the house of Ahab.

28 Then he went with Joram the son of Ahab to war against (AJ)Hazael king of Aram at (AK)Ramoth-gilead, and the Arameans [o]wounded Joram. 29 So (AL)King Joram returned to have himself healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Arameans had [p]inflicted on him at (AM)Ramah when he fought against Hazael king of Aram. Then (AN)Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel because he was sick.

Jehu Reigns over Israel

9 Now Elisha the prophet summoned one of (AO)the sons of the prophets and said to him, “[q](AP)Get ready and (AQ)take this flask of oil in your hand, and go to (AR)Ramoth-gilead. 2 When you arrive there, then look there for (AS)Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi, and go in and (AT)have him get up from among his brothers, and bring him to an inner room. 3 Then take the flask of oil and pour it on his head, and say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “(AU)I have anointed you king over Israel.”’ Then open the door and flee, and do not wait.”

4 So (AV)the young man, the servant of the prophet, went to Ramoth-gilead. 5 When he arrived, behold, the commanders of the army were sitting, and he said, “I have a word for you, commander.” And Jehu said, “[r]For which one of us?” And he said, “For you, commander.” 6 He then got up and went into the house, and the prophet’s servant poured the oil on his head and said to him, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘(AW)I have anointed you king over the people of the Lord, over Israel. 7 And you shall strike the house of Ahab your master, (AX)so that I may avenge (AY)the blood of My servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord, (AZ)at the hand of Jezebel. 8 For the entire house of Ahab shall perish, and (BA)I will eliminate from Ahab (BB)every male person (BC)both [s]slave and free in Israel. 9 (BD)I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and (BE)like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah. 10 (BF)The dogs will eat Jezebel in the territory of Jezreel, and no one will bury her.’” Then he opened the door and fled.

11 Now Jehu went out to the servants of his master, and one said to him, “(BG)Is everything well? Why did this (BH)crazy fellow come to you?” And he said to them, “You know very well the man and his talk.” 12 And they said, “It is a lie; tell us now.” And he said, “Such and such he said to me, saying, ‘This is what the Lord says: “I have anointed you king over Israel.”’” 13 Then (BI)they hurried, and each man took his garment and put it under him on the bare steps, and (BJ)blew the trumpet, saying, “Jehu is king!”

Jehu Assassinates Jehoram (Joram)

14 So Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi conspired against Joram. (BK)Now Joram [t]with all Israel was [u]defending Ramoth-gilead against Hazael king of Aram, 15 but (BL)King [v]Joram had returned to Jezreel to have himself healed of the wounds which the Arameans had [w]inflicted on him when he fought Hazael king of Aram. So Jehu said to the other men, “If this is your [x]intent, then let no [y]one escape from the city to go tell about it in Jezreel.” 16 Then Jehu rode in a chariot and went to Jezreel, since Joram was lying there recovering. (BM)And Ahaziah the king of Judah had come down to see Joram.

17 Now the watchman was standing on the tower in Jezreel and he saw the [z]company of Jehu as he came, and he said, “I see a [aa]company.” And [ab]Joram said, “Take a horseman and send him to meet them and have him [ac]ask, ‘Is your intention peace?’” 18 So a horseman went to meet him and said, “This is what the king says: ‘Is your intention peace?’” But Jehu said, “[ad](BN)How is peace any business of yours? Turn and follow me.” And the watchman [ae]reported, “The messenger came to them, but he did not return.” 19 Then he sent a second horseman, and he came to them and said, “This is what the king says: ‘Is your intention peace?’” And Jehu [af]answered, “[ag]How is peace any business of yours? Turn and follow me.” 20 And the watchman [ah]reported, “He came up to them, but he did not return; and (BO)the [ai]driving is like the driving of (BP)Jehu the son of Nimshi, for he drives furiously.”

21 Then [aj]Joram said, “[ak]Get ready.” And they [al]made his chariot ready. (BQ)Then [am]Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah went out, each in his chariot, and they went out to meet Jehu and found him on the [an](BR)property of Naboth the Jezreelite. 22 When [ao]Joram saw Jehu, he said, “Is your intention peace, Jehu?” And he [ap]answered, “What ‘peace,’ (BS)so long as your mother Jezebel’s acts of prostitution and witchcraft are so many?” 23 So [aq]Joram [ar]turned back and fled, and he said to Ahaziah, “(BT)There is treachery, Ahaziah!” 24 Then (BU)Jehu [as]drew his bow with his full strength and [at]shot [au]Joram between his arms; and the arrow went [av]through his heart, and he sank in his chariot. 25 And Jehu said to Bidkar his officer, “Pick him up and (BV)throw him on the [aw]property of the field of Naboth the Jezreelite; for remember, when [ax]you and I were riding together after his father Ahab, that the (BW)Lord brought this (BX)pronouncement against him: 26 ‘(BY)I have certainly seen yesterday the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons,’ declares the Lord, ‘and (BZ)I will repay you on this [ay]property,’ declares the Lord. Now then, pick him up and throw him on the [az]property, in accordance with the word of the Lord.”

Jehu Assassinates Ahaziah

27 (CA)When Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by way of the garden house. But Jehu pursued him and said, “[ba]Shoot him too, in the chariot.” So they shot him at the ascent of Gur, which is at (CB)Ibleam. But he fled to Megiddo and died there. 28 (CC)Then his servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his grave with his fathers in the city of David.

29 Now in (CD)the eleventh year of Joram, the son of Ahab, Ahaziah became king over Judah.

30 When Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard about it, and (CE)she put makeup on her eyes and adorned her head, and looked down through the window. 31 As Jehu entered the gate, she said, “(CF)Is your intention peace, Zimri, his master’s murderer?” 32 Then he raised his face toward the window and said, “Who is with me, who?” And two or three officials looked down at him.

Jezebel Is Killed

33 Then he said, “Throw her down.” So they threw her down, and some of her blood spattered on the wall and on the horses, and he trampled her underfoot. 34 When he came in, he ate and drank; and he said, “See now to (CG)this cursed woman and bury her, for (CH)she is a king’s daughter.” 35 So they went to bury her, but they found nothing of her except the skull, the feet, and the palms of her hands. 36 Therefore they returned and informed him. And he said, “This is the word of the Lord, which He spoke by His servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, ‘(CI)On the [bb]property of Jezreel the dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel; 37 and (CJ)the corpse of Jezebel will be like dung on the face of the field in the [bc]property of Jezreel, so they cannot say, “This is Jezebel.”’”

Judgment upon Ahab’s House

10 Now Ahab had seventy sons in (CK)Samaria. And Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria, to the officials of Jezreel, the elders, and to the guardians of the children of Ahab, saying, 2 “And now, (CL)when this letter comes to you, since your master’s sons are with you, [bd]as well as the chariots and horses, and a fortified city and the weapons, 3 select the best and most capable of your master’s sons and seat him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house.” 4 But they feared greatly and said, “Behold, (CM)the two kings did not stand firm before him; how then can we stand?” 5 And the one who was in charge of the household, and the one who was in charge of the city, and the elders, and the guardians of the children, sent word to Jehu, saying, “(CN)We are your servants, and everything that you tell us we will do. We will not appoint any man king; do what is good in your sight.” 6 Then he wrote them a letter a second time, saying, “If you are on my side, and will listen to my voice, take the heads of the men, your master’s sons, and come to me at Jezreel about this time tomorrow.” Now the king’s sons, seventy men, were with the great people of the city, who were raising them. 7 When the letter came to them, they took the king’s sons and (CO)slaughtered them, seventy men, and put their heads in baskets, and sent them to him at Jezreel. 8 When the messenger came and informed him, saying, “They have brought the heads of the king’s sons,” he said, “Put them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until morning.” 9 Now in the morning he went out and stood and said to all the people, “You are [be]innocent; behold, (CP)I conspired against my master and killed him, but (CQ)who [bf]killed all these? 10 Know then that (CR)nothing of the word of the Lord, which the Lord spoke concerning the house of Ahab, shall [bg]fall to the earth, for the Lord has done (CS)what He spoke [bh]through His servant Elijah.” 11 So Jehu [bi]killed all who remained of the house of Ahab in (CT)Jezreel, and all his great men, his acquaintances, and his priests, until he left him without a survivor.

12 Then he set out and [bj]went to Samaria. On the way while he was at [bk]Beth-eked of the shepherds, 13 (CU)Jehu [bl]encountered the relatives of Ahaziah king of Judah, and he said, “Who are you?” And they [bm]answered, “We are the relatives of Ahaziah; and we have come down to greet the sons of the king and the sons of the queen mother.” 14 Then he said, “Take them alive.” So they took them alive, and slaughtered them at the pit of Beth-eked, forty-two men; and he left none of them.

15 Now when he had gone from there, he [bn]encountered (CV)Jehonadab the son of (CW)Rechab coming to meet him; and he [bo]greeted him and said to him, “Is your heart right, just as my heart is with your heart?” And Jehonadab [bp]answered, “It is.” Jehu said, “If it is, (CX)give me your hand.” And he gave him his hand, and he pulled him up to him into the chariot. 16 Then he said, “Come with me and (CY)see my zeal for the Lord.” So [bq]he had him ride in his chariot. 17 When he came to Samaria, (CZ)he [br]killed all who remained to Ahab in Samaria, until he had eliminated [bs]them, (DA)in accordance with the word of the Lord which He spoke to Elijah.

Jehu Destroys Baal Worshipers

18 Then Jehu gathered all the people and said to them, “(DB)Ahab served Baal a little; Jehu will serve him much. 19 Now, (DC)summon to me all the prophets of Baal, all his worshipers and all his priests; let no one go missing, because I have a great sacrifice for Baal; whoever is missing shall not live.” But Jehu did it in deception, in order to eliminate the worshipers of Baal. 20 And Jehu said, “(DD)Proclaim a holy assembly for Baal.” And (DE)they proclaimed it. 21 Then Jehu sent word [bt]throughout Israel, and all the worshipers of Baal came, so that there was not a person left who did not come. And when they entered (DF)the house of Baal, the house of Baal was filled from one end to the other. 22 And he said to the one who was [bu]in charge of the wardrobe, “Bring out garments for all the worshipers of Baal.” So he brought out the garments for them. 23 Then Jehu entered the house of Baal with Jehonadab the son of Rechab; and he said to the worshipers of Baal, “Search carefully and see to it that there is here with you none of the servants of the Lord, but only the worshipers of Baal.” 24 Then they entered to [bv]offer sacrifices and burnt offerings.

Now Jehu had stationed for himself eighty men outside, and he had said, “(DG)The one who allows any of the men whom I bring into your hands to escape [bw]shall give up his life in exchange.”

25 Then it came about, as soon as he had finished [bx]offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the [by](DH)guard and to the royal officers, “(DI)Go in, [bz]kill them; let none come out.” So they [ca]killed them with the edge of the sword; and the [cb]guard and the royal officers threw them out, and went to the [cc]sanctuary of the house of Baal. 26 They brought out the (DJ)memorial stones of the house of Baal and burned them. 27 They also tore down the memorial stone of Baal and tore down the house of Baal, and (DK)made it a latrine as it is to this day.

28 So Jehu eradicated Baal from Israel. 29 However, (DL)as for the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, into which he misled Israel, from these Jehu did not desist, including the (DM)golden calves that were at Bethel and at Dan. 30 Yet the Lord said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in performing what is right in My eyes, and have done to the house of Ahab in accordance with everything that was in My heart, (DN)your sons to the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.” 31 But Jehu (DO)was not careful to walk in the Law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart; (DP)he did not desist from the sins of Jeroboam, into which he misled Israel.

32 In those days the (DQ)Lord began to cut off pieces from Israel; and (DR)Hazael [cd]defeated them throughout the territory of Israel: 33 from the Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, the Reubenites, and the Manassites; from (DS)Aroer, which is by the Valley of the Arnon, that is, (DT)Gilead and Bashan.

Jehoahaz Succeeds Jehu

34 Now as for the rest of the acts of Jehu and everything that he did and all his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 35 And Jehu [ce]lay down with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria. And his son Jehoahaz became king in his place. 36 So the [cf]time which Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.
