Eliseo y Naamán

5 Naamán,(A) general del ejército del rey de Siria, era varón grande delante de su señor, y lo tenía en alta estima, porque por medio de él había dado Jehová salvación a Siria. Era este hombre valeroso en extremo, pero leproso. 2 Y de Siria habían salido bandas armadas, y habían llevado cautiva de la tierra de Israel a una muchacha, la cual servía a la mujer de Naamán. 3 Esta dijo a su señora: Si rogase mi señor al profeta que está en Samaria, él lo sanaría de su lepra. 4 Entrando Naamán a su señor, le relató diciendo: Así y así ha dicho una muchacha que es de la tierra de Israel. 5 Y le dijo el rey de Siria: Anda, ve, y yo enviaré cartas al rey de Israel.

Salió, pues, él, llevando consigo diez talentos de plata, y seis mil piezas de oro, y diez mudas de vestidos. 6 Tomó también cartas para el rey de Israel, que decían así: Cuando lleguen a ti estas cartas, sabe por ellas que yo envío a ti mi siervo Naamán, para que lo sanes de su lepra. 7 Luego que el rey de Israel leyó las cartas, rasgó sus vestidos, y dijo: ¿Soy yo Dios, que mate y dé vida, para que este envíe a mí a que sane un hombre de su lepra? Considerad ahora, y ved cómo busca ocasión contra mí.

8 Cuando Eliseo el varón de Dios oyó que el rey de Israel había rasgado sus vestidos, envió a decir al rey: ¿Por qué has rasgado tus vestidos? Venga ahora a mí, y sabrá que hay profeta en Israel. 9 Y vino Naamán con sus caballos y con su carro, y se paró a las puertas de la casa de Eliseo. 10 Entonces Eliseo le envió un mensajero, diciendo: Ve y lávate siete veces en el Jordán, y tu carne se te restaurará, y serás limpio. 11 Y Naamán se fue enojado, diciendo: He aquí yo decía para mí: Saldrá él luego, y estando en pie invocará el nombre de Jehová su Dios, y alzará su mano y tocará el lugar, y sanará la lepra. 12 Abana y Farfar, ríos de Damasco, ¿no son mejores que todas las aguas de Israel? Si me lavare en ellos, ¿no seré también limpio? Y se volvió, y se fue enojado. 13 Mas sus criados se le acercaron y le hablaron diciendo: Padre mío, si el profeta te mandara alguna gran cosa, ¿no la harías? ¿Cuánto más, diciéndote: Lávate, y serás limpio? 14 Él entonces descendió, y se zambulló siete veces en el Jordán, conforme a la palabra del varón de Dios; y su carne se volvió como la carne de un niño, y quedó limpio.

15 Y volvió al varón de Dios, él y toda su compañía, y se puso delante de él, y dijo: He aquí ahora conozco que no hay Dios en toda la tierra, sino en Israel. Te ruego que recibas algún presente de tu siervo. 16 Mas él dijo: Vive Jehová, en cuya presencia estoy, que no lo aceptaré. Y le instaba que aceptara alguna cosa, pero él no quiso. 17 Entonces Naamán dijo: Te ruego, pues, ¿de esta tierra no se dará a tu siervo la carga de un par de mulas? Porque de aquí en adelante tu siervo no sacrificará holocausto ni ofrecerá sacrificio a otros dioses, sino a Jehová. 18 En esto perdone Jehová a tu siervo: que cuando mi señor el rey entrare en el templo de Rimón para adorar en él, y se apoyare sobre mi brazo, si yo también me inclinare en el templo de Rimón; cuando haga tal, Jehová perdone en esto a tu siervo. 19 Y él le dijo: Ve en paz. Se fue, pues, y caminó como media legua de tierra.

20 Entonces Giezi, criado de Eliseo el varón de Dios, dijo entre sí: He aquí mi señor estorbó a este sirio Naamán, no tomando de su mano las cosas que había traído. Vive Jehová, que correré yo tras él y tomaré de él alguna cosa. 21 Y siguió Giezi a Naamán; y cuando vio Naamán que venía corriendo tras él, se bajó del carro para recibirle, y dijo: ¿Va todo bien? 22 Y él dijo: Bien. Mi señor me envía a decirte: He aquí vinieron a mí en esta hora del monte de Efraín dos jóvenes de los hijos de los profetas; te ruego que les des un talento de plata, y dos vestidos nuevos. 23 Dijo Naamán: Te ruego que tomes dos talentos. Y le insistió, y ató dos talentos de plata en dos bolsas, y dos vestidos nuevos, y lo puso todo a cuestas a dos de sus criados para que lo llevasen delante de él. 24 Y así que llegó a un lugar secreto, él lo tomó de mano de ellos, y lo guardó en la casa; luego mandó a los hombres que se fuesen. 25 Y él entró, y se puso delante de su señor. Y Eliseo le dijo: ¿De dónde vienes, Giezi? Y él dijo: Tu siervo no ha ido a ninguna parte. 26 Él entonces le dijo: ¿No estaba también allí mi corazón, cuando el hombre volvió de su carro a recibirte? ¿Es tiempo de tomar plata, y de tomar vestidos, olivares, viñas, ovejas, bueyes, siervos y siervas? 27 Por tanto, la lepra de Naamán se te pegará a ti y a tu descendencia para siempre. Y salió de delante de él leproso, blanco como la nieve.

Eliseo hace flotar el hacha

6 Los hijos de los profetas dijeron a Eliseo: He aquí, el lugar en que moramos contigo nos es estrecho. 2 Vamos ahora al Jordán, y tomemos de allí cada uno una viga, y hagamos allí lugar en que habitemos. Y él dijo: Andad. 3 Y dijo uno: Te rogamos que vengas con tus siervos. Y él respondió: Yo iré. 4 Se fue, pues, con ellos; y cuando llegaron al Jordán, cortaron la madera. 5 Y aconteció que mientras uno derribaba un árbol, se le cayó el hacha en el agua; y gritó diciendo: ¡Ah, señor mío, era prestada! 6 El varón de Dios preguntó: ¿Dónde cayó? Y él le mostró el lugar. Entonces cortó él un palo, y lo echó allí; e hizo flotar el hierro. 7 Y dijo: Tómalo. Y él extendió la mano, y lo tomó.

Eliseo y los sirios

8 Tenía el rey de Siria guerra contra Israel, y consultando con sus siervos, dijo: En tal y tal lugar estará mi campamento. 9 Y el varón de Dios envió a decir al rey de Israel: Mira que no pases por tal lugar, porque los sirios van allí. 10 Entonces el rey de Israel envió a aquel lugar que el varón de Dios había dicho; y así lo hizo una y otra vez con el fin de cuidarse.

11 Y el corazón del rey de Siria se turbó por esto; y llamando a sus siervos, les dijo: ¿No me declararéis vosotros quién de los nuestros es del rey de Israel? 12 Entonces uno de los siervos dijo: No, rey señor mío, sino que el profeta Eliseo está en Israel, el cual declara al rey de Israel las palabras que tú hablas en tu cámara más secreta. 13 Y él dijo: Id, y mirad dónde está, para que yo envíe a prenderlo. Y le fue dicho: He aquí que él está en Dotán. 14 Entonces envió el rey allá gente de a caballo, y carros, y un gran ejército, los cuales vinieron de noche, y sitiaron la ciudad.

15 Y se levantó de mañana y salió el que servía al varón de Dios, y he aquí el ejército que tenía sitiada la ciudad, con gente de a caballo y carros. Entonces su criado le dijo: ¡Ah, señor mío! ¿qué haremos? 16 Él le dijo: No tengas miedo, porque más son los que están con nosotros que los que están con ellos. 17 Y oró Eliseo, y dijo: Te ruego, oh Jehová, que abras sus ojos para que vea. Entonces Jehová abrió los ojos del criado, y miró; y he aquí que el monte estaba lleno de gente de a caballo, y de carros de fuego alrededor de Eliseo. 18 Y luego que los sirios descendieron a él, oró Eliseo a Jehová, y dijo: Te ruego que hieras con ceguera a esta gente. Y los hirió con ceguera, conforme a la petición de Eliseo. 19 Después les dijo Eliseo: No es este el camino, ni es esta la ciudad; seguidme, y yo os guiaré al hombre que buscáis. Y los guio a Samaria.

20 Y cuando llegaron a Samaria, dijo Eliseo: Jehová, abre los ojos de estos, para que vean. Y Jehová abrió sus ojos, y miraron, y se hallaban en medio de Samaria. 21 Cuando el rey de Israel los hubo visto, dijo a Eliseo: ¿Los mataré, padre mío? 22 Él le respondió: No los mates. ¿Matarías tú a los que tomaste cautivos con tu espada y con tu arco? Pon delante de ellos pan y agua, para que coman y beban, y vuelvan a sus señores. 23 Entonces se les preparó una gran comida; y cuando habían comido y bebido, los envió, y ellos se volvieron a su señor. Y nunca más vinieron bandas armadas de Siria a la tierra de Israel.

Eliseo y el sitio de Samaria

24 Después de esto aconteció que Ben-adad rey de Siria reunió todo su ejército, y subió y sitió a Samaria. 25 Y hubo gran hambre en Samaria, a consecuencia de aquel sitio; tanto que la cabeza de un asno se vendía por ochenta piezas de plata, y la cuarta parte de un cab de estiércol de palomas por cinco piezas de plata. 26 Y pasando el rey de Israel por el muro, una mujer le gritó, y dijo: Salva, rey señor mío. 27 Y él dijo: Si no te salva Jehová, ¿de dónde te puedo salvar yo? ¿Del granero, o del lagar? 28 Y le dijo el rey: ¿Qué tienes? Ella respondió: Esta mujer me dijo: Da acá tu hijo, y comámoslo hoy, y mañana comeremos el mío. 29 Cocimos, pues, a mi hijo, y lo comimos.(B) El día siguiente yo le dije: Da acá tu hijo, y comámoslo. Mas ella ha escondido a su hijo. 30 Cuando el rey oyó las palabras de aquella mujer, rasgó sus vestidos, y pasó así por el muro; y el pueblo vio el cilicio que traía interiormente sobre su cuerpo. 31 Y él dijo: Así me haga Dios, y aun me añada, si la cabeza de Eliseo hijo de Safat queda sobre él hoy.

32 Y Eliseo estaba sentado en su casa, y con él estaban sentados los ancianos; y el rey envió a él un hombre. Mas antes que el mensajero viniese a él, dijo él a los ancianos: ¿No habéis visto cómo este hijo de homicida envía a cortarme la cabeza? Mirad, pues, y cuando viniere el mensajero, cerrad la puerta, e impedidle la entrada. ¿No se oye tras él el ruido de los pasos de su amo? 33 Aún estaba él hablando con ellos, y he aquí el mensajero que descendía a él; y dijo: Ciertamente este mal de Jehová viene. ¿Para qué he de esperar más a Jehová?

7 Dijo entonces Eliseo: Oíd palabra de Jehová: Así dijo Jehová: Mañana a estas horas valdrá el seah de flor de harina un siclo, y dos seahs de cebada un siclo, a la puerta de Samaria. 2 Y un príncipe sobre cuyo brazo el rey se apoyaba, respondió al varón de Dios, y dijo: Si Jehová hiciese ahora ventanas en el cielo, ¿sería esto así? Y él dijo: He aquí tú lo verás con tus ojos, mas no comerás de ello.

3 Había a la entrada de la puerta cuatro hombres leprosos, los cuales dijeron el uno al otro: ¿Para qué nos estamos aquí hasta que muramos? 4 Si tratáremos de entrar en la ciudad, por el hambre que hay en la ciudad moriremos en ella; y si nos quedamos aquí, también moriremos. Vamos, pues, ahora, y pasemos al campamento de los sirios; si ellos nos dieren la vida, viviremos; y si nos dieren la muerte, moriremos. 5 Se levantaron, pues, al anochecer, para ir al campamento de los sirios; y llegando a la entrada del campamento de los sirios, no había allí nadie. 6 Porque Jehová había hecho que en el campamento de los sirios se oyese estruendo de carros, ruido de caballos, y estrépito de gran ejército; y se dijeron unos a otros: He aquí, el rey de Israel ha tomado a sueldo contra nosotros a los reyes de los heteos y a los reyes de los egipcios, para que vengan contra nosotros. 7 Y así se levantaron y huyeron al anochecer, abandonando sus tiendas, sus caballos, sus asnos, y el campamento como estaba; y habían huido para salvar sus vidas. 8 Cuando los leprosos llegaron a la entrada del campamento, entraron en una tienda y comieron y bebieron, y tomaron de allí plata y oro y vestidos, y fueron y lo escondieron; y vueltos, entraron en otra tienda, y de allí también tomaron, y fueron y lo escondieron.

9 Luego se dijeron el uno al otro: No estamos haciendo bien. Hoy es día de buena nueva, y nosotros callamos; y si esperamos hasta el amanecer, nos alcanzará nuestra maldad. Vamos pues, ahora, entremos y demos la nueva en casa del rey. 10 Vinieron, pues, y gritaron a los guardas de la puerta de la ciudad, y les declararon, diciendo: Nosotros fuimos al campamento de los sirios, y he aquí que no había allí nadie, ni voz de hombre, sino caballos atados, asnos también atados, y el campamento intacto. 11 Los porteros gritaron, y lo anunciaron dentro, en el palacio del rey. 12 Y se levantó el rey de noche, y dijo a sus siervos: Yo os declararé lo que nos han hecho los sirios. Ellos saben que tenemos hambre, y han salido de las tiendas y se han escondido en el campo, diciendo: Cuando hayan salido de la ciudad, los tomaremos vivos, y entraremos en la ciudad. 13 Entonces respondió uno de sus siervos y dijo: Tomen ahora cinco de los caballos que han quedado en la ciudad (porque los que quedan acá también perecerán como toda la multitud de Israel que ya ha perecido), y enviemos y veamos qué hay. 14 Tomaron, pues, dos caballos de un carro, y envió el rey al campamento de los sirios, diciendo: Id y ved. 15 Y ellos fueron, y los siguieron hasta el Jordán; y he aquí que todo el camino estaba lleno de vestidos y enseres que los sirios habían arrojado por la premura. Y volvieron los mensajeros y lo hicieron saber al rey.

16 Entonces el pueblo salió, y saqueó el campamento de los sirios. Y fue vendido un seah de flor de harina por un siclo, y dos seahs de cebada por un siclo, conforme a la palabra de Jehová. 17 Y el rey puso a la puerta a aquel príncipe sobre cuyo brazo él se apoyaba; y lo atropelló el pueblo a la entrada, y murió, conforme a lo que había dicho el varón de Dios, cuando el rey descendió a él. 18 Aconteció, pues, de la manera que el varón de Dios había hablado al rey, diciendo: Dos seahs de cebada por un siclo, y el seah de flor de harina será vendido por un siclo mañana a estas horas, a la puerta de Samaria. 19 A lo cual aquel príncipe había respondido al varón de Dios, diciendo: Si Jehová hiciese ventanas en el cielo, ¿pudiera suceder esto? Y él dijo: He aquí tú lo verás con tus ojos, mas no comerás de ello. 20 Y le sucedió así; porque el pueblo le atropelló a la entrada, y murió.

Naaman Is Healed

5 Now (A)Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man [a]in the view of his master, and eminent, because by him the Lord had given victory to Aram. The man was also a valiant warrior, but afflicted with leprosy. 2 Now the Arameans had gone out (B)in bands and had taken captive a little girl from the land of Israel; and she [b]waited on Naaman’s wife. 3 And she said to her mistress, “If only my master were [c]with the prophet who is in Samaria! Then he would cure him of his leprosy.” 4 And [d]Naaman went in and told his master, saying, “The girl who is from the land of Israel spoke such and such.” 5 Then the king of Aram said, “Go [e]now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel.” So he departed and (C)took with him ten [f]talents of silver, six thousand [g]shekels of gold, and ten (D)changes of clothes.

6 And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, [h]which said, “And now as this letter comes to you, behold, I have sent Naaman my servant to you, so that you may cure him of his leprosy.” 7 But when the king of Israel read the letter, (E)he tore his clothes and said, “(F)Am I God, to kill and to keep alive, that this man is sending word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? But (G)consider now, and see how he is seeking [i]a quarrel against me.”

8 Now it happened, when Elisha (H)the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, that he sent word to the king, saying, “Why did you tear your clothes? Just have him come to me, and he shall learn that there is a prophet in Israel.” 9 So Naaman came with his horses and his chariots, and stood at the doorway of Elisha’s house. 10 And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “(I)Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh will be restored to you and you will be clean.” 11 But Naaman was furious and went away, and he said, “Behold, I [j]thought, ‘He will certainly come out to me, and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, and wave his hand over the site and cure the [k]leprosy.’ 12 Are [l]Abanah and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, not better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?” So he turned and (J)went away in a rage. 13 (K)Then his servants approached and spoke to him, [m]saying, “(L)My father, had the prophet told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more then, when he says to you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” 14 So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, in accordance with the word of the man of God; and (M)his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and (N)he was clean.

Gehazi’s Greed

15 Then he returned to the man of God [n]with all his company, and came and stood before him. And he said, “Behold now, (O)I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel; so please (P)accept a [o]gift from your servant now.” 16 But he said, “(Q)As surely as the Lord lives, before whom I stand, (R)I will accept nothing.” And he urged him to accept it, but he refused. 17 Then Naaman said, “If not, please let your servant be given two mules’ load of (S)earth; for your servant will no longer offer a burnt offering nor a sacrifice to other gods, but to the Lord. 18 Regarding this matter may the Lord forgive your servant: when my master goes into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and (T)he leans on my hand and I bow down in the house of Rimmon, when I bow down in the house of Rimmon, may the Lord please forgive your servant in this matter.” 19 He said to him, “(U)Go in peace.” So he went some distance from him.

20 But (V)Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, [p]thought, “Behold, my master has spared this Naaman the Aramean, [q]by not accepting from his hand what he brought. (W)As the Lord lives, I will run after him and take something from him.” 21 So Gehazi pursued Naaman. When Naaman saw someone running after him, he came down from the chariot to meet him and said, “Is everything well?” 22 And he said, “(X)Everything is well. My master has sent me, saying, ‘Behold, just now two young men of the sons of the prophets have come to me from (Y)the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and (Z)two changes of clothes.’” 23 Naaman said, “(AA)Be sure to take two talents.” And he urged him, and tied up two talents of silver in two bags with two changes of clothes, and gave them to two of his servants; and they carried them before him. 24 When he came to the [r]hill, he took them from their hand and (AB)deposited them in the house, and he sent the men away, and they departed. 25 But he went in and stood before his master. And Elisha said to him, “Where have you been, Gehazi?” And he said, “(AC)Your servant went nowhere.”

26 Then he said to him, “Did my heart not go with you, when the man turned from his chariot to meet you? (AD)Is it a time to accept money and to accept clothes, olive groves, vineyards, sheep, oxen, and male and female slaves? 27 Therefore, the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and to your [s]descendants forever.” So he went out from his presence (AE)afflicted with leprosy, as white as snow.

The Axe Head Recovered

6 Now (AF)the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “Behold now, the place [t]before you where we are living is too cramped for us. 2 Please let us go to the Jordan, and let us each take from there a beam, and let us construct a place there for ourselves, to live there.” So he said, “Go.” 3 Then one of them said, “Please agree and go with your servants.” And he said, “I will go.” 4 So he went with them; and when they came to the Jordan, they cut down trees. 5 But it happened that as one of them was [u]cutting down a beam, [v]the axe head fell into the water; and he cried out and said, “Oh, my master! It was borrowed!” 6 Then the man of God said, “Where did it fall?” And when he showed him the place, (AG)he cut off a stick and threw it in there, and made the iron float. 7 Then he said, “Pick it up for yourself.” So he reached out his hand and took it.

The Arameans Plot to Capture Elisha

8 Now the king of Aram was making war against Israel; and he consulted with his servants, saying, “In such and such a place shall be my camp.” 9 But (AH)the man of God sent word to the king of Israel, saying, “Be careful that you do not pass this place, because the Arameans are coming down there.” 10 And the king of Israel sent scouts to the place about which the man of God had told him; so he warned him, so that he was on his guard there, [w]more than once or twice.

11 Now the heart of the king of Aram was enraged over this matter; and he called his servants and said to them, “Will you not tell me which of us is for the king of Israel?” 12 One of his servants said, “No, my lord, the king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.” 13 So he said, “Go and see where he is, so that I may send men and take him.” And it was told to him, saying, “Behold, he is in (AI)Dothan.” 14 So he sent horses and chariots and a substantial army there, and they came by night and surrounded the city.

15 Now when the attendant of the man of God had risen early and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was circling the city. And his servant said to him, “This is hopeless, my master! [x]What are we to do?” 16 And he said, “(AJ)Do not be afraid, for (AK)those who are with us are [y]greater than those who are with them.” 17 Then Elisha prayed and said, “(AL)Lord, please, open his eyes so that he may see.” And the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of (AM)horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 18 And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed to the Lord and said, “Please strike this [z]people with blindness.” So He (AN)struck them with blindness in accordance with the word of Elisha. 19 Then Elisha said to them, “This is not the way, nor is this the city; follow me and I will bring you to the man whom you seek.” And he brought them to Samaria.

20 When they had come into Samaria, Elisha said, “(AO)Lord, open the eyes of these men, so that they may see.” So the Lord opened their eyes, and they saw; and behold, they were in the midst of Samaria. 21 Then the king of Israel when he saw them, said to Elisha, “(AP)My father, shall I [aa]kill them? Shall I [ab]kill them?” 22 But he [ac]answered, “You shall not [ad]kill them. Would you [ae](AQ)kill those whom you have taken captive with your sword and your bow? (AR)Set bread and water before them, so that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.” 23 So he provided a large feast for them; and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. And (AS)the marauding bands of Arameans did not come again into the land of Israel.

The Siege of Samaria—Cannibalism

24 Now it came about after this, that (AT)Ben-hadad the king of Aram gathered all his army, and went up and besieged Samaria. 25 So there was a severe (AU)famine in Samaria; and behold, they kept besieging it until a donkey’s head was sold for eighty shekels of silver, and a fourth of a [af]kab of dove’s dung for five shekels of silver. 26 And as the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried out to him, saying, “Help, my lord the king!” 27 But he said, “[ag]If the Lord does not help you, from where am I to help you? From the threshing floor, or from the wine press?” 28 Then the king said to her, “(AV)What [ah]is on your mind?” And she said, “This woman said to me, ‘Give your son so that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’ 29 (AW)So we cooked my son and ate him; and I said to her on the next day, ‘Give your son, so that we may eat him’; but she has hidden her son.” 30 When the king heard the woman’s words, (AX)he tore his clothes—and he was passing by on the wall—and the people looked, and behold, he had sackcloth [ai]underneath on his [aj]body. 31 Then he said, “May (AY)God do so to me and more so, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat [ak]remains on him today.”

32 Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and (AZ)the elders were sitting with him. And the king sent a man from his presence; but before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, “Do you (BA)see how this son of a murderer has sent a man to cut off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door and [al]hold the door shut against him. Is the sound of his master’s feet not behind him?” 33 While he was still talking with them, behold, the messenger came down to him and he said, “(BB)Behold, this evil is from the Lord; why should I wait for the Lord any longer?”

Elisha Promises Food

7 Then Elisha said, “Listen to the word of the Lord; this is what the Lord says: ‘(BC)About this time tomorrow a [am]measure of fine flour will be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria.’” 2 (BD)The royal officer on whose hand the king was leaning responded to the man of God and said, “(BE)Even if the Lord were to make [an]windows in heaven, could this thing happen?” Then he said, “Behold, you are going to see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat [ao]any of it.”

Four Men with Leprosy Report Arameans’ Flight

3 Now there were four (BF)leprous men at the entrance of the gate; and they said to one another, “Why are we sitting here until we die? 4 If we say, ‘We will enter the city,’ then the famine is in the city and we will die there; but if we sit here, we will also die. Now then come, and let’s go over to (BG)the camp of the Arameans. If they spare us, we will live; and if they kill us, then we will die.” 5 So they got up at twilight to go to the camp of the Arameans; when they came to the outskirts of the camp of the Arameans, behold, there was no one there. 6 For (BH)the Lord had made the army of the Arameans hear a sound of chariots, a sound of horses, that is, the sound of a great army; and they said to one another, “Behold, the king of Israel has hired (BI)the kings of the Hittites and (BJ)the kings of the Egyptians against us, to [ap]attack us!” 7 So they (BK)got up and fled at twilight, and abandoned their tents, their horses, and their donkeys—indeed the camp itself, just as it was; and they fled for their lives. 8 When these men with leprosy came to the outskirts of the camp, they entered one tent and ate and drank, and (BL)carried from there silver, gold, and clothes, and they went and hid them; then they returned and entered another tent, and carried valuables from there also, and went and hid them.

9 Then they said to one another, “We are not doing the right thing. This day is a day of good news, but we are keeping silent about it; if we wait until the morning light, punishment will [aq]overtake us. Now then come, let’s go and inform the king’s household.” 10 So they came and called to the gatekeepers of the city, and told them, saying, “We came to the camp of the Arameans, and behold, there was no one there, nor a human voice; only the horses tied and the donkeys tied, and the tents just as they were.” 11 And the gatekeepers called and announced it inside the king’s house. 12 Then the king got up in the night and said to his servants, “I will now tell you what the Arameans have done to us. They know that (BM)we are hungry; so they have left the camp (BN)to hide themselves in the field, saying, ‘When they come out of the city, we will capture them alive and get into the city.’” 13 One of his servants responded and said, “Please, have some men take five of the horses that remain, which are left [ar]in the city. Behold, they will be in any case like all the multitude of Israel who are left in it; behold, they will be like all the multitude of Israel who have already perished, so let us send them and see.” 14 Therefore they took two chariots with horses, and the king sent them after the army of the Arameans, saying, “Go and see.”

The Promise Fulfilled

15 They went after them to the Jordan, and behold, all the way was full of clothes and equipment which the Arameans had thrown away when they fled in a hurry. Then the messengers returned and informed the king.

16 So the people went out and plundered the camp of the Arameans. Then a [as]measure of fine flour was sold for a shekel, and two [at]measures of barley for a shekel, (BO)in accordance with the word of the Lord. 17 Now the king appointed (BP)the royal officer on whose hand he leaned [au]to be in charge of the gate; but the people trampled on him at the gate, and he died, just as the man of God had said, (BQ)who spoke when the king came down to him. 18 So it happened just as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, “(BR)Two [av]measures of barley for a shekel and a [aw]measure of fine flour for a shekel, will be sold about this time tomorrow at the gate of Samaria.” 19 At that time the royal officer had responded to the man of God and said, “Now even if (BS)the Lord were to make windows in heaven, could such a thing as this happen?” And he had said, “Behold, you are going to see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat [ax]any of it.” 20 And this is what happened to him, for the people trampled on him at the gate and he died.
