21 De doce años era Manasés cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó en Jerusalén cincuenta y cinco años; el nombre de su madre fue Hepsiba. 2 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová,(A) según las abominaciones de las naciones que Jehová había echado de delante de los hijos de Israel. 3 Porque volvió a edificar los lugares altos que Ezequías su padre había derribado, y levantó altares a Baal, e hizo una imagen de Asera, como había hecho Acab rey de Israel; y adoró a todo el ejército de los cielos, y rindió culto a aquellas cosas. 4 Asimismo edificó altares en la casa de Jehová, de la cual Jehová había dicho: Yo pondré mi nombre en Jerusalén.(B) 5 Y edificó altares para todo el ejército de los cielos en los dos atrios de la casa de Jehová. 6 Y pasó a su hijo por fuego, y se dio a observar los tiempos, y fue agorero, e instituyó encantadores y adivinos, multiplicando así el hacer lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, para provocarlo a ira. 7 Y puso una imagen de Asera que él había hecho, en la casa de la cual Jehová había dicho a David y a Salomón su hijo: Yo pondré mi nombre para siempre en esta casa, y en Jerusalén, a la cual escogí de todas las tribus de Israel; 8 y no volveré a hacer que el pie de Israel sea movido de la tierra que di a sus padres, con tal que guarden y hagan conforme a todas las cosas que yo les he mandado, y conforme a toda la ley que mi siervo Moisés les mandó.(C) 9 Mas ellos no escucharon; y Manasés los indujo a que hiciesen más mal que las naciones que Jehová destruyó delante de los hijos de Israel.

Manasseh Succeeds Hezekiah

21 (A)Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned for fifty-five years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Hephzibah. 2 (B)He did evil in the sight of the Lord, (C)in accordance with the abominations of the nations whom the Lord [a]dispossessed before the sons of Israel. 3 For (D)he rebuilt the high places which his father Hezekiah had destroyed; and (E)he erected altars for Baal and made an [b]Asherah, just as Ahab king of Israel had done, and he (F)worshiped all the heavenly [c]lights and served them. 4 And (G)he built altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, “(H)In Jerusalem I will put My name.” 5 He built altars for (I)all the heavenly [d]lights in (J)the two courtyards of the house of the Lord. 6 And (K)he made his son pass through the fire, (L)interpreted signs, practiced divination, and used mediums and spiritists. He did great evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking Him to anger. 7 Then (M)he put the carved image of Asherah that he had made in the house of which the Lord had said to David and to his son Solomon, “(N)In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel, I will put My name forever. 8 And I (O)will not make the feet of Israel wander anymore from the land which I gave their fathers, if only they will take care to act in accordance with everything that I have commanded them, and with all the Law that My servant Moses commanded them.” 9 But they did not listen, and Manasseh (P)encouraged them to do evil, more than the nations whom the Lord eliminated from the presence of the sons of Israel.

33 De doce años era Manasés cuando comenzó a reinar, y cincuenta y cinco años reinó en Jerusalén. 2 Pero hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová,(A) conforme a las abominaciones de las naciones que Jehová había echado de delante de los hijos de Israel. 3 Porque él reedificó los lugares altos que Ezequías su padre había derribado, y levantó altares a los baales, e hizo imágenes de Asera, y adoró a todo el ejército de los cielos, y les rindió culto. 4 Edificó también altares en la casa de Jehová, de la cual había dicho Jehová: En Jerusalén estará mi nombre perpetuamente.(B) 5 Edificó asimismo altares a todo el ejército de los cielos en los dos atrios de la casa de Jehová. 6 Y pasó sus hijos por fuego en el valle del hijo de Hinom; y observaba los tiempos, miraba en agüeros, era dado a adivinaciones, y consultaba a adivinos y encantadores; se excedió en hacer lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, hasta encender su ira. 7 Además de esto puso una imagen fundida que hizo, en la casa de Dios, de la cual había dicho Dios a David y a Salomón su hijo: En esta casa y en Jerusalén, la cual yo elegí sobre todas las tribus de Israel, pondré mi nombre para siempre; 8 y nunca más quitaré el pie de Israel de la tierra que yo entregué a vuestros padres, a condición de que guarden y hagan todas las cosas que yo les he mandado, toda la ley, los estatutos y los preceptos, por medio de Moisés.(C) 9 Manasés, pues, hizo extraviarse a Judá y a los moradores de Jerusalén, para hacer más mal que las naciones que Jehová destruyó delante de los hijos de Israel.

33 (A)Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned for fifty-five years in Jerusalem. 2 (B)He did evil in the sight of the Lord according to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord dispossessed before the sons of Israel. 3 For (C)he rebuilt the high places which his father Hezekiah had torn down; (D)he also set up altars for the Baals and made [a]Asherim, and he worshiped all the heavenly [b]lights and served them. 4 (E)He built altars in the house of the Lord of which the Lord had said, “My name shall be (F)in Jerusalem forever.” 5 He built altars for all the heavenly [c]lights in (G)the two courtyards of the house of the Lord. 6 (H)He also made his sons pass through the fire in the Valley of Ben-hinnom; and he practiced witchcraft, used divination, practiced sorcery, and (I)dealt with mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking Him to anger. 7 Then he put (J)the carved image of the idol which he had made in the house of God, of which God had said to David and his son Solomon, “(K)In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel, I will put My name forever; 8 and I will not remove the foot of Israel again from the land (L)which I have appointed for your fathers, if only they will take care to do everything that I have commanded them according to all the Law, the statutes, and the ordinances given through Moses.” 9 So Manasseh encouraged Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to do more evil than the nations whom the Lord destroyed before the sons of Israel.

10 Habló, pues, Jehová por medio de sus siervos los profetas, diciendo: 11 Por cuanto Manasés rey de Judá ha hecho estas abominaciones, y ha hecho más mal que todo lo que hicieron los amorreos que fueron antes de él, y también ha hecho pecar a Judá con sus ídolos; 12 por tanto, así ha dicho Jehová el Dios de Israel: He aquí yo traigo tal mal sobre Jerusalén y sobre Judá, que al que lo oyere le retiñirán ambos oídos. 13 Y extenderé sobre Jerusalén el cordel de Samaria y la plomada de la casa de Acab; y limpiaré a Jerusalén como se limpia un plato, que se friega y se vuelve boca abajo. 14 Y desampararé el resto de mi heredad, y lo entregaré en manos de sus enemigos; y serán para presa y despojo de todos sus adversarios; 15 por cuanto han hecho lo malo ante mis ojos, y me han provocado a ira, desde el día que sus padres salieron de Egipto hasta hoy.

16 Fuera de esto, derramó Manasés mucha sangre inocente en gran manera, hasta llenar a Jerusalén de extremo a extremo; además de su pecado con que hizo pecar a Judá, para que hiciese lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová.

17 Los demás hechos de Manasés, y todo lo que hizo, y el pecado que cometió, ¿no está todo escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá?

The King’s Idolatries Rebuked

10 Now the Lord spoke through His servants the prophets, saying, 11 “(A)Since Manasseh king of Judah has committed these abominations, (B)having done more evil than all that the Amorites did who were before him, and (C)has also misled Judah into sin (D)with his idols, 12 therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘Behold, I am bringing such a disaster on Jerusalem and Judah that whoever hears about it, (E)both of his ears will ring. 13 (F)I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria and the plummet of the house of Ahab, and I will wipe Jerusalem clean just as one wipes a bowl, wiping it and turning it upside down. 14 And I will abandon the remnant of My inheritance and hand them over to their enemies, and they will become as plunder and spoils to all their enemies, 15 because they have done evil in My sight, and have been provoking Me to anger since the day their fathers came from Egypt, even to this day.’”

16 (G)Furthermore, Manasseh shed very much innocent blood until he had filled Jerusalem [a]from one end to another, besides his sin (H)into which he misled Judah, in doing evil in the sight of the Lord. 17 (I)Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh and all that he did, and his sin which he [b]committed, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?

10 Y habló Jehová a Manasés y a su pueblo, mas ellos no escucharon; 11 por lo cual Jehová trajo contra ellos los generales del ejército del rey de los asirios, los cuales aprisionaron con grillos a Manasés, y atado con cadenas lo llevaron a Babilonia. 12 Mas luego que fue puesto en angustias, oró a Jehová su Dios, humillado grandemente en la presencia del Dios de sus padres. 13 Y habiendo orado a él, fue atendido; pues Dios oyó su oración y lo restauró a Jerusalén, a su reino. Entonces reconoció Manasés que Jehová era Dios.

14 Después de esto edificó el muro exterior de la ciudad de David, al occidente de Gihón, en el valle, a la entrada de la puerta del Pescado, y amuralló Ofel, y elevó el muro muy alto; y puso capitanes de ejército en todas las ciudades fortificadas de Judá. 15 Asimismo quitó los dioses ajenos, y el ídolo de la casa de Jehová, y todos los altares que había edificado en el monte de la casa de Jehová y en Jerusalén, y los echó fuera de la ciudad. 16 Reparó luego el altar de Jehová, y sacrificó sobre él sacrificios de ofrendas de paz y de alabanza; y mandó a Judá que sirviesen a Jehová Dios de Israel. 17 Pero el pueblo aún sacrificaba en los lugares altos, aunque lo hacía para Jehová su Dios.

18 Los demás hechos de Manasés, y su oración a su Dios, y las palabras de los videntes que le hablaron en nombre de Jehová el Dios de Israel, he aquí todo está escrito en las actas de los reyes de Israel. 19 Su oración también, y cómo fue oído, todos sus pecados, y su prevaricación, los sitios donde edificó lugares altos y erigió imágenes de Asera e ídolos, antes que se humillase, he aquí estas cosas están escritas en las palabras de los videntes.

Manasseh’s Idolatry Rebuked

10 So the Lord spoke to Manasseh and his people, but (A)they paid no attention. 11 (B)Therefore the Lord brought the commanders of the army of the king of Assyria against them, and they captured Manasseh with hooks, (C)bound him with bronze chains, and led him to Babylon. 12 When (D)he was in distress, he appeased the Lord his God and (E)humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers. 13 When he prayed to Him, (F)He was moved by him and heard his pleading, and brought him back to Jerusalem to his kingdom. Then Manasseh (G)knew that the Lord alone is God.

14 Now after this he built the outer wall of the city of David on the west side of (H)Gihon, in the valley, up to the entrance of the (I)Fish Gate; and he encircled the (J)Ophel with it and made it very high. Then he put army commanders in all the fortified cities in Judah. 15 He also (K)removed the foreign gods and the idol from the house of the Lord, as well as all the altars which he had built on the mountain of the house of the Lord and in Jerusalem, and he threw them outside the city. 16 He set up the altar of the Lord and sacrificed (L)peace offerings and thanksgiving offerings on it; and he ordered Judah to serve the Lord God of Israel. 17 However, (M)the people still sacrificed on the high places, although only to the Lord their God.

18 Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh and (N)his prayer to his God, and the words of (O)the seers who spoke to him in the name of the Lord God of Israel, behold, they are among the records of the kings of (P)Israel. 19 His prayer also and (Q)how God was moved by him, and all his sin, his unfaithfulness, and (R)the sites on which he built high places and erected the [a]Asherim and the carved images, before he humbled himself, behold, they are written in the records of [b]Hozai.

El nombre de su madre fue Mesulemet hija de Haruz, de Jotba. 20 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, como había hecho Manasés su padre. 21 Y anduvo en todos los caminos en que su padre anduvo, y sirvió a los ídolos a los cuales había servido su padre, y los adoró; 22 y dejó a Jehová el Dios de sus padres, y no anduvo en el camino de Jehová. 23 Y los siervos de Amón conspiraron contra él, y mataron al rey en su casa. 24 Entonces el pueblo de la tierra mató a todos los que habían conspirado contra el rey Amón; y puso el pueblo de la tierra por rey en su lugar a Josías su hijo. 25 Los demás hechos de Amón, ¿no están todos escritos en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? 26 Y fue sepultado en su sepulcro en el huerto de Uza, y reinó en su lugar Josías su hijo.

3 A los ocho años de su reinado, siendo aún muchacho, comenzó a buscar al Dios de David su padre; y a los doce años comenzó a limpiar a Judá y a Jerusalén de los lugares altos, imágenes de Asera, esculturas, e imágenes fundidas. 4 Y derribaron delante de él los altares de los baales,(B) e hizo pedazos las imágenes del sol, que estaban puestas encima; despedazó también las imágenes de Asera, las esculturas y estatuas fundidas, y las desmenuzó, y esparció el polvo sobre los sepulcros de los que les habían ofrecido sacrificios. 5 Quemó además los huesos de los sacerdotes sobre sus altares,(C) y limpió a Judá y a Jerusalén. 6 Lo mismo hizo en las ciudades de Manasés, Efraín, Simeón y hasta Neftalí, y en los lugares asolados alrededor. 7 Y cuando hubo derribado los altares y las imágenes de Asera, y quebrado y desmenuzado las esculturas, y destruido todos los ídolos por toda la tierra de Israel, volvió a Jerusalén.

34 (A)Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned for thirty-one years in Jerusalem. 2 (B)He did what was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the ways of his father David and did not turn aside to the right or the left. 3 For in the eighth year of his reign while he was still a youth, he began to (C)seek the God of his father David; and in the twelfth year he began (D)to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the [a]Asherim, the carved images, and the cast metal images. 4 They tore down the altars of the Baals in his presence, and he chopped down (E)the incense altars that were high above them; also he broke in pieces the Asherim, the carved images, and the cast metal images, and (F)ground them to powder, and scattered it on the graves of those who had sacrificed to them. 5 Then (G)he burned the bones of the priests on their altars and purged Judah and Jerusalem. 6 (H)In the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, Simeon, and as far as Naphtali, in their surrounding spaces, 7 he also tore down the altars and (I)crushed the [b]Asherim and the carved images into powder, and chopped down all the incense altars throughout the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem.

Llamamiento y misión de Jeremías

1 Las palabras de Jeremías hijo de Hilcías, de los sacerdotes que estuvieron en Anatot, en tierra de Benjamín. 2 Palabra de Jehová que le vino en los días de Josías(A) hijo de Amón, rey de Judá, en el año decimotercero de su reinado. 3 Le vino también en días de Joacim(B) hijo de Josías, rey de Judá, hasta el fin del año undécimo de Sedequías(C) hijo de Josías, rey de Judá, hasta la cautividad de Jerusalén en el mes quinto.

4 Vino, pues, palabra de Jehová a mí, diciendo: 5 Antes que te formase en el vientre te conocí, y antes que nacieses te santifiqué, te di por profeta a las naciones. 6 Y yo dije: ¡Ah! ¡Ah, Señor Jehová! He aquí, no sé hablar, porque soy niño. 7 Y me dijo Jehová: No digas: Soy un niño; porque a todo lo que te envíe irás tú, y dirás todo lo que te mande. 8 No temas delante de ellos, porque contigo estoy para librarte, dice Jehová. 9 Y extendió Jehová su mano y tocó mi boca, y me dijo Jehová: He aquí he puesto mis palabras en tu boca. 10 Mira que te he puesto en este día sobre naciones y sobre reinos, para arrancar y para destruir, para arruinar y para derribar, para edificar y para plantar. 11 La palabra de Jehová vino a mí, diciendo: ¿Qué ves tú, Jeremías? Y dije: Veo una vara de almendro.[a] 12 Y me dijo Jehová: Bien has visto; porque yo apresuro[b] mi palabra para ponerla por obra.

13 Vino a mí la palabra de Jehová por segunda vez, diciendo: ¿Qué ves tú? Y dije: Veo una olla que hierve; y su faz está hacia el norte. 14 Me dijo Jehová: Del norte se soltará el mal sobre todos los moradores de esta tierra. 15 Porque he aquí que yo convoco a todas las familias de los reinos del norte, dice Jehová; y vendrán, y pondrá cada uno su campamento a la entrada de las puertas de Jerusalén, y junto a todos sus muros en derredor, y contra todas las ciudades de Judá. 16 Y a causa de toda su maldad, proferiré mis juicios contra los que me dejaron, e incensaron a dioses extraños, y la obra de sus manos adoraron. 17 Tú, pues, ciñe tus lomos, levántate, y háblales todo cuanto te mande; no temas delante de ellos, para que no te haga yo quebrantar delante de ellos. 18 Porque he aquí que yo te he puesto en este día como ciudad fortificada, como columna de hierro, y como muro de bronce contra toda esta tierra, contra los reyes de Judá, sus príncipes, sus sacerdotes, y el pueblo de la tierra. 19 Y pelearán contra ti, pero no te vencerán; porque yo estoy contigo, dice Jehová, para librarte.

Jehová y la apostasía de Israel

2 Vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo: 2 Anda y clama a los oídos de Jerusalén, diciendo: Así dice Jehová: Me he acordado de ti, de la fidelidad de tu juventud, del amor de tu desposorio, cuando andabas en pos de mí en el desierto, en tierra no sembrada. 3 Santo era Israel a Jehová, primicias de sus nuevos frutos. Todos los que le devoraban eran culpables; mal venía sobre ellos, dice Jehová.

4 Oíd la palabra de Jehová, casa de Jacob, y todas las familias de la casa de Israel. 5 Así dijo Jehová: ¿Qué maldad hallaron en mí vuestros padres, que se alejaron de mí, y se fueron tras la vanidad y se hicieron vanos? 6 Y no dijeron: ¿Dónde está Jehová, que nos hizo subir de la tierra de Egipto, que nos condujo por el desierto, por una tierra desierta y despoblada, por tierra seca y de sombra de muerte, por una tierra por la cual no pasó varón, ni allí habitó hombre? 7 Y os introduje en tierra de abundancia, para que comieseis su fruto y su bien; pero entrasteis y contaminasteis mi tierra, e hicisteis abominable mi heredad. 8 Los sacerdotes no dijeron: ¿Dónde está Jehová? y los que tenían la ley no me conocieron; y los pastores se rebelaron contra mí, y los profetas profetizaron en nombre de Baal, y anduvieron tras lo que no aprovecha.

9 Por tanto, contenderé aún con vosotros, dijo Jehová, y con los hijos de vuestros hijos pleitearé. 10 Porque pasad a las costas de Quitim y mirad; y enviad a Cedar, y considerad cuidadosamente, y ved si se ha hecho cosa semejante a esta. 11 ¿Acaso alguna nación ha cambiado sus dioses, aunque ellos no son dioses? Sin embargo, mi pueblo ha trocado su gloria por lo que no aprovecha. 12 Espantaos, cielos, sobre esto, y horrorizaos; desolaos en gran manera, dijo Jehová. 13 Porque dos males ha hecho mi pueblo: me dejaron a mí, fuente de agua viva, y cavaron para sí cisternas, cisternas rotas que no retienen agua.

14 ¿Es Israel siervo? ¿Es esclavo? ¿Por qué ha venido a ser presa? 15 Los cachorros del león rugieron contra él, alzaron su voz, y asolaron su tierra; quemadas están sus ciudades, sin morador. 16 Aun los hijos de Menfis y de Tafnes te quebrantaron la coronilla. 17 ¿No te acarreó esto el haber dejado a Jehová tu Dios, cuando te conducía por el camino? 18 Ahora, pues, ¿qué tienes tú en el camino de Egipto, para que bebas agua del Nilo? ¿Y qué tienes tú en el camino de Asiria, para que bebas agua del Éufrates? 19 Tu maldad te castigará, y tus rebeldías te condenarán; sabe, pues, y ve cuán malo y amargo es el haber dejado tú a Jehová tu Dios, y faltar mi temor en ti, dice el Señor, Jehová de los ejércitos.

20 Porque desde muy atrás rompiste tu yugo y tus ataduras, y dijiste: No serviré. Con todo eso, sobre todo collado alto y debajo de todo árbol frondoso te echabas como ramera. 21 Te planté de vid escogida, simiente verdadera toda ella; ¿cómo, pues, te me has vuelto sarmiento de vid extraña? 22 Aunque te laves con lejía, y amontones jabón sobre ti, la mancha de tu pecado permanecerá aún delante de mí, dijo Jehová el Señor.

Jeremiah’s Call and Commission

1 The words of (A)Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were in (B)Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, 2 to whom the word of the Lord came in the days of (C)Josiah the son of (D)Amon, king of Judah, in the (E)thirteenth year of his reign. 3 It came also in the days of (F)Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the end of the eleventh year of (G)Zedekiah the son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the exile of Jerusalem in the fifth month.

4 Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

5 “Before I (H)formed you in the womb I knew you,
And (I)before you were born I consecrated you;
I have (J)appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
6 Then (K)I said, “Oh, Lord [a]God!
Behold, I do not know how to speak,
Because (L)I am a youth.”
7 But the Lord said to me,
“Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’
(M)Because everywhere I send you, you shall go,
And (N)all that I command you, you shall speak.
8 (O)Do not be afraid of them,
For (P)I am with you to save you,” declares the Lord.

9 Then the Lord stretched out His hand and (Q)touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me,

“Behold, I have (R)put My words in your mouth.
10 See, (S)I have appointed you this day over the nations and over the kingdoms,
(T)To root out and to tear down,
To destroy and to overthrow,
(U)To build and to plant.”

The Almond Branch and Boiling Pot

11 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “What do you see, (V)Jeremiah?” And I said, “I see a branch of an [b]almond tree.” 12 Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for (W)I am [c]watching over My word to perform it.”

13 And the word of the Lord came to me a second time, saying, “(X)What do you see?” And I said, “I see a boiling (Y)pot, facing away from the north.” 14 Then the Lord said to me, “(Z)Out of the north the evil [d]will be unleashed on all the inhabitants of the land. 15 For, behold, I am calling (AA)all the families of the kingdoms of the north,” declares the Lord; “and they will come and (AB)place, each one of them, his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all its walls around, and against all the (AC)cities of Judah. 16 And I will [e]pronounce My judgments against them concerning all their wickedness, since they have (AD)abandoned Me and have [f](AE)offered sacrifices to other gods, and worshiped the (AF)works of their own hands. 17 Now, (AG)belt your garment around your waist and arise, and speak to them all that I command you. (AH)Do not be dismayed before them, or I will make you dismayed before them. 18 Now behold, I have made you today like a fortified city and like a pillar of iron and walls of bronze against the whole land, to the kings of Judah, to its leaders, to its priests, and to the people of the land. 19 And they will fight against you but they will not overcome you, for (AI)I am with you to save you,” declares the Lord.

Judah’s Apostasy

2 Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Go and (AJ)proclaim in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, ‘This is what the Lord says:

“I remember regarding you the [g](AK)devotion of your youth,
Your love when you were a bride,
(AL)Your following after Me in the wilderness,
Through a land not sown.
3 Israel was (AM)holy to the Lord,
The (AN)first of His harvest.
(AO)All who ate of it became guilty;
Evil came upon them,” declares the Lord.’”

4 Hear the word of the Lord, house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel. 5 This is what the Lord says:

“(AP)What injustice did your fathers find in Me,
That they went far from Me,
And walked after (AQ)emptiness and became empty?
6 They did not say, ‘Where is the Lord
Who (AR)brought us up out of the land of Egypt,
Who (AS)led us through the wilderness,
Through a land of deserts and of pits,
Through a land of drought and of [h]deep darkness,
Through a land that no one crossed
And where no person lived?’
7 I brought you into the (AT)fruitful land
To eat its fruit and its good things.
But you came and (AU)defiled My land,
And you made My inheritance an abomination.
8 The (AV)priests did not say, ‘Where is the Lord?’
And those who handle the Law (AW)did not know Me;
The [i]rulers also revolted against Me,
And the (AX)prophets prophesied by Baal
And walked after (AY)things that were of no benefit.

9 “Therefore I will still (AZ)contend with you,” declares the Lord,
“And I will contend with your sons’ sons.
10 For (BA)cross to the coastlands of [j]Kittim and see,
And send to (BB)Kedar and observe closely,
And see if there has been anything like this!
11 Has a nation changed gods,
When (BC)they were not gods?
But My people have (BD)exchanged their glory
For that which is of no benefit.
12 Be appalled at this, (BE)you heavens,
And shudder, be very desolate,” declares the Lord.
13 “For My people have committed two evils:
They have abandoned Me,
The (BF)fountain of living waters,
To carve out for themselves (BG)cisterns,
Broken cisterns
That do not hold water.

14 “Is Israel (BH)a slave? Or is he a servant born in the home?
Why has he become plunder?
15 The young (BI)lions have roared at him,
They have [k]roared loudly.
And they have (BJ)made his land a waste;
His cities have been destroyed, without inhabitant.
16 Also the [l]men of (BK)Memphis and Tahpanhes
Have [m]shaved (BL)your head.
17 Have you not (BM)done this to yourself
By your abandoning the Lord your God
When He (BN)led you in the way?
18 But now what are you doing (BO)on the road to Egypt,
Except to drink the waters of the [n](BP)Nile?
Or what are you doing on the road to Assyria,
Except to drink the waters of the Euphrates River?
19 (BQ)Your own wickedness will correct you,
And your (BR)apostasies will punish you;
Know therefore and see that it is evil and (BS)bitter
For you to abandon the Lord your God,
And (BT)the fear of Me is not in you,” declares the Lord [o]God of armies.

20 “For long ago [p](BU)I broke your yoke
And tore off your restraints;
But you said, ‘I will not serve!’
For on every (BV)high hill
And under every leafy tree
You have lain down as a prostitute.
21 Yet I (BW)planted you as a choice vine,
A completely faithful seed.
How then have you turned yourself before Me
Into the (BX)degenerate shoots of a foreign vine?
22 Although you (BY)wash yourself with lye
And [q]use much soap,
The (BZ)stain of your guilt is before Me,” declares the Lord [r]God.
