Reinado de Azarías

(2 Cr. 26.3-5,16-23)

15 En el año veintisiete de Jeroboam rey de Israel, comenzó a reinar Azarías hijo de Amasías, rey de Judá. 2 Cuando comenzó a reinar era de dieciséis años, y cincuenta y dos años reinó en Jerusalén; el nombre de su madre fue Jecolías, de Jerusalén. 3 E hizo lo recto ante los ojos de Jehová, conforme a todas las cosas que su padre Amasías había hecho. 4 Con todo eso, los lugares altos no se quitaron, porque el pueblo sacrificaba aún y quemaba incienso en los lugares altos. 5 Mas Jehová hirió al rey con lepra, y estuvo leproso hasta el día de su muerte, y habitó en casa separada, y Jotam hijo del rey tenía el cargo del palacio, gobernando al pueblo. 6 Los demás hechos de Azarías, y todo lo que hizo, ¿no está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? 7 Y durmió Azarías con sus padres,(A) y lo sepultaron con ellos en la ciudad de David, y reinó en su lugar Jotam su hijo.

Reinado de Zacarías

8 En el año treinta y ocho de Azarías rey de Judá, reinó Zacarías hijo de Jeroboam sobre Israel seis meses. 9 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, como habían hecho sus padres; no se apartó de los pecados de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el que hizo pecar a Israel. 10 Contra él conspiró Salum hijo de Jabes, y lo hirió en presencia de su pueblo, y lo mató, y reinó en su lugar. 11 Los demás hechos de Zacarías, he aquí que están escritos en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel. 12 Y esta fue la palabra de Jehová que había hablado a Jehú, diciendo: Tus hijos hasta la cuarta generación se sentarán en el trono de Israel.(B) Y fue así.

Reinado de Salum

13 Salum hijo de Jabes comenzó a reinar en el año treinta y nueve de Uzías rey de Judá, y reinó un mes en Samaria; 14 porque Manahem hijo de Gadi subió de Tirsa y vino a Samaria, e hirió a Salum hijo de Jabes en Samaria y lo mató, y reinó en su lugar. 15 Los demás hechos de Salum, y la conspiración que tramó, he aquí que están escritos en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel. 16 Entonces Manahem saqueó a Tifsa, y a todos los que estaban en ella, y también sus alrededores desde Tirsa; la saqueó porque no le habían abierto las puertas, y abrió el vientre a todas sus mujeres que estaban encintas.

Reinado de Manahem

17 En el año treinta y nueve de Azarías rey de Judá, reinó Manahem hijo de Gadi sobre Israel diez años, en Samaria. 18 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová; en todo su tiempo no se apartó de los pecados de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el que hizo pecar a Israel. 19 Y vino Pul rey de Asiria a atacar la tierra; y Manahem dio a Pul mil talentos de plata para que le ayudara a confirmarse en el reino. 20 E impuso Manahem este dinero sobre Israel, sobre todos los poderosos y opulentos; de cada uno cincuenta siclos de plata, para dar al rey de Asiria; y el rey de Asiria se volvió, y no se detuvo allí en el país. 21 Los demás hechos de Manahem, y todo lo que hizo, ¿no está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel? 22 Y durmió Manahem con sus padres, y reinó en su lugar Pekaía su hijo.

Reinado de Pekaía

23 En el año cincuenta de Azarías rey de Judá, reinó Pekaía hijo de Manahem sobre Israel en Samaria, dos años. 24 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová; no se apartó de los pecados de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el que hizo pecar a Israel. 25 Y conspiró contra él Peka hijo de Remalías, capitán suyo, y lo hirió en Samaria, en el palacio de la casa real, en compañía de Argob y de Arie, y de cincuenta hombres de los hijos de los galaaditas; y lo mató, y reinó en su lugar. 26 Los demás hechos de Pekaía, y todo lo que hizo, he aquí que está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel.

Reinado de Peka

27 En el año cincuenta y dos de Azarías rey de Judá, reinó Peka hijo de Remalías sobre Israel en Samaria; y reinó veinte años. 28 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová; no se apartó de los pecados de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el que hizo pecar a Israel.

29 En los días de Peka rey de Israel, vino Tiglat-pileser rey de los asirios, y tomó a Ijón, Abel-bet-maaca, Janoa, Cedes, Hazor, Galaad, Galilea, y toda la tierra de Neftalí; y los llevó cautivos a Asiria. 30 Y Oseas hijo de Ela conspiró contra Peka hijo de Remalías, y lo hirió y lo mató, y reinó en su lugar, a los veinte años de Jotam hijo de Uzías. 31 Los demás hechos de Peka, y todo lo que hizo, he aquí que está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel.

Reinado de Jotam

(2 Cr. 27.1-9)

32 En el segundo año de Peka hijo de Remalías rey de Israel, comenzó a reinar Jotam hijo de Uzías rey de Judá. 33 Cuando comenzó a reinar era de veinticinco años, y reinó dieciséis años en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Jerusa hija de Sadoc. 34 Y él hizo lo recto ante los ojos de Jehová; hizo conforme a todas las cosas que había hecho su padre Uzías. 35 Con todo eso, los lugares altos no fueron quitados, porque el pueblo sacrificaba aún, y quemaba incienso en los lugares altos. Edificó él la puerta más alta de la casa de Jehová. 36 Los demás hechos de Jotam, y todo lo que hizo, ¿no está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? 37 En aquel tiempo comenzó Jehová a enviar contra Judá a Rezín rey de Siria, y a Peka hijo de Remalías. 38 Y durmió Jotam con sus padres, y fue sepultado con ellos en la ciudad de David su padre, y reinó en su lugar Acaz su hijo.

Reinado de Acaz

(2 Cr. 28.1-27)

16 En el año diecisiete de Peka hijo de Remalías, comenzó a reinar Acaz hijo de Jotam rey de Judá. 2 Cuando comenzó a reinar Acaz era de veinte años, y reinó en Jerusalén dieciséis años; y no hizo lo recto ante los ojos de Jehová su Dios, como David su padre. 3 Antes anduvo en el camino de los reyes de Israel, y aun hizo pasar por fuego a su hijo, según las prácticas abominables de las naciones que Jehová echó de delante de los hijos de Israel.(C) 4 Asimismo sacrificó y quemó incienso en los lugares altos, y sobre los collados, y debajo de todo árbol frondoso.

5 Entonces Rezín rey de Siria y Peka hijo de Remalías, rey de Israel, subieron a Jerusalén para hacer guerra y sitiar a Acaz; mas no pudieron tomarla.(D) 6 En aquel tiempo el rey de Edom recobró Elat para Edom, y echó de Elat a los hombres de Judá; y los de Edom vinieron a Elat y habitaron allí hasta hoy. 7 Entonces Acaz envió embajadores a Tiglat-pileser rey de Asiria, diciendo: Yo soy tu siervo y tu hijo; sube, y defiéndeme de mano del rey de Siria, y de mano del rey de Israel, que se han levantado contra mí. 8 Y tomando Acaz la plata y el oro que se halló en la casa de Jehová, y en los tesoros de la casa real, envió al rey de Asiria un presente. 9 Y le atendió el rey de Asiria; pues subió el rey de Asiria contra Damasco, y la tomó, y llevó cautivos a los moradores a Kir, y mató a Rezín.

10 Después fue el rey Acaz a encontrar a Tiglat-pileser rey de Asiria en Damasco; y cuando vio el rey Acaz el altar que estaba en Damasco, envió al sacerdote Urías el diseño y la descripción del altar, conforme a toda su hechura. 11 Y el sacerdote Urías edificó el altar; conforme a todo lo que el rey Acaz había enviado de Damasco, así lo hizo el sacerdote Urías, entre tanto que el rey Acaz venía de Damasco. 12 Y luego que el rey vino de Damasco, y vio el altar, se acercó el rey a él, y ofreció sacrificios en él; 13 y encendió su holocausto y su ofrenda, y derramó sus libaciones, y esparció la sangre de sus sacrificios de paz junto al altar. 14 E hizo acercar el altar de bronce(E) que estaba delante de Jehová, en la parte delantera de la casa, entre el altar y el templo de Jehová, y lo puso al lado del altar hacia el norte. 15 Y mandó el rey Acaz al sacerdote Urías, diciendo: En el gran altar encenderás el holocausto de la mañana y la ofrenda de la tarde, y el holocausto del rey y su ofrenda, y asimismo el holocausto de todo el pueblo de la tierra y su ofrenda y sus libaciones; y esparcirás sobre él toda la sangre del holocausto, y toda la sangre del sacrificio. El altar de bronce será mío para consultar en él. 16 E hizo el sacerdote Urías conforme a todas las cosas que el rey Acaz le mandó.

17 Y cortó el rey Acaz los tableros de las basas, y les quitó las fuentes; y quitó también el mar de sobre los bueyes de bronce que estaban debajo de él,(F) y lo puso sobre el suelo de piedra. 18 Asimismo el pórtico para los días de reposo,[a] que habían edificado en la casa, y el pasadizo de afuera, el del rey, los quitó del templo de Jehová, por causa del rey de Asiria. 19 Los demás hechos que puso por obra Acaz, ¿no están todos escritos en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? 20 Y durmió el rey Acaz con sus padres,(G) y fue sepultado con ellos en la ciudad de David, y reinó en su lugar su hijo Ezequías.

Caída de Samaria y cautiverio de Israel

17 En el año duodécimo de Acaz rey de Judá, comenzó a reinar Oseas hijo de Ela en Samaria sobre Israel; y reinó nueve años. 2 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, aunque no como los reyes de Israel que habían sido antes de él. 3 Contra este subió Salmanasar rey de los asirios; y Oseas fue hecho su siervo, y le pagaba tributo. 4 Mas el rey de Asiria descubrió que Oseas conspiraba; porque había enviado embajadores a So, rey de Egipto, y no pagaba tributo al rey de Asiria, como lo hacía cada año; por lo que el rey de Asiria le detuvo, y le aprisionó en la casa de la cárcel. 5 Y el rey de Asiria invadió todo el país, y sitió a Samaria, y estuvo sobre ella tres años. 6 En el año nueve de Oseas, el rey de Asiria tomó Samaria, y llevó a Israel cautivo a Asiria, y los puso en Halah, en Habor junto al río Gozán, y en las ciudades de los medos.

7 Porque los hijos de Israel pecaron contra Jehová su Dios, que los sacó de tierra de Egipto, de bajo la mano de Faraón rey de Egipto, y temieron a dioses ajenos, 8 y anduvieron en los estatutos de las naciones que Jehová había lanzado de delante de los hijos de Israel, y en los estatutos que hicieron los reyes de Israel. 9 Y los hijos de Israel hicieron secretamente cosas no rectas contra Jehová su Dios, edificándose lugares altos en todas sus ciudades, desde las torres de las atalayas hasta las ciudades fortificadas, 10 y levantaron estatuas e imágenes de Asera en todo collado alto, y debajo de todo árbol frondoso,(H) 11 y quemaron allí incienso en todos los lugares altos, a la manera de las naciones que Jehová había traspuesto de delante de ellos, e hicieron cosas muy malas para provocar a ira a Jehová. 12 Y servían a los ídolos, de los cuales Jehová les había dicho: Vosotros no habéis de hacer esto. 13 Jehová amonestó entonces a Israel y a Judá por medio de todos los profetas y de todos los videntes, diciendo: Volveos de vuestros malos caminos, y guardad mis mandamientos y mis ordenanzas, conforme a todas las leyes que yo prescribí a vuestros padres, y que os he enviado por medio de mis siervos los profetas. 14 Mas ellos no obedecieron, antes endurecieron su cerviz, como la cerviz de sus padres, los cuales no creyeron en Jehová su Dios. 15 Y desecharon sus estatutos, y el pacto que él había hecho con sus padres, y los testimonios que él había prescrito a ellos; y siguieron la vanidad, y se hicieron vanos, y fueron en pos de las naciones que estaban alrededor de ellos, de las cuales Jehová les había mandado que no hiciesen a la manera de ellas. 16 Dejaron todos los mandamientos de Jehová su Dios, y se hicieron imágenes fundidas de dos becerros,(I) y también imágenes de Asera, y adoraron a todo el ejército de los cielos, y sirvieron a Baal; 17 e hicieron pasar a sus hijos y a sus hijas por fuego; y se dieron a adivinaciones y agüeros,(J) y se entregaron a hacer lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, provocándole a ira. 18 Jehová, por tanto, se airó en gran manera contra Israel, y los quitó de delante de su rostro; y no quedó sino solo la tribu de Judá.

19 Mas ni aun Judá guardó los mandamientos de Jehová su Dios, sino que anduvieron en los estatutos de Israel, los cuales habían ellos hecho. 20 Y desechó Jehová a toda la descendencia de Israel, y los afligió, y los entregó en manos de saqueadores, hasta echarlos de su presencia.

21 Porque separó a Israel de la casa de David, y ellos hicieron rey a Jeroboam hijo de Nabat; y Jeroboam apartó a Israel de en pos de Jehová, y les hizo cometer gran pecado. 22 Y los hijos de Israel anduvieron en todos los pecados de Jeroboam que él hizo, sin apartarse de ellos, 23 hasta que Jehová quitó a Israel de delante de su rostro, como él lo había dicho por medio de todos los profetas sus siervos; e Israel fue llevado cautivo de su tierra a Asiria, hasta hoy.

Asiria puebla de nuevo a Samaria

24 Y trajo el rey de Asiria gente de Babilonia, de Cuta, de Ava, de Hamat y de Sefarvaim, y los puso en las ciudades de Samaria, en lugar de los hijos de Israel; y poseyeron a Samaria, y habitaron en sus ciudades. 25 Y aconteció al principio, cuando comenzaron a habitar allí, que no temiendo ellos a Jehová, envió Jehová contra ellos leones que los mataban. 26 Dijeron, pues, al rey de Asiria: Las gentes que tú trasladaste y pusiste en las ciudades de Samaria, no conocen la ley del Dios de aquella tierra, y él ha echado leones en medio de ellos, y he aquí que los leones los matan, porque no conocen la ley del Dios de la tierra. 27 Y el rey de Asiria mandó, diciendo: Llevad allí a alguno de los sacerdotes que trajisteis de allá, y vaya y habite allí, y les enseñe la ley del Dios del país. 28 Y vino uno de los sacerdotes que habían llevado cautivo de Samaria, y habitó en Bet-el, y les enseñó cómo habían de temer a Jehová.

29 Pero cada nación se hizo sus dioses, y los pusieron en los templos de los lugares altos que habían hecho los de Samaria; cada nación en su ciudad donde habitaba. 30 Los de Babilonia hicieron a Sucot-benot, los de Cuta hicieron a Nergal, y los de Hamat hicieron a Asima. 31 Los aveos hicieron a Nibhaz y a Tartac, y los de Sefarvaim quemaban sus hijos en el fuego para adorar a Adramelec y a Anamelec, dioses de Sefarvaim. 32 Temían a Jehová, e hicieron del bajo pueblo sacerdotes de los lugares altos, que sacrificaban para ellos en los templos de los lugares altos. 33 Temían a Jehová, y honraban a sus dioses, según la costumbre de las naciones de donde habían sido trasladados.

34 Hasta hoy hacen como antes: ni temen a Jehová, ni guardan sus estatutos ni sus ordenanzas, ni hacen según la ley y los mandamientos que prescribió Jehová a los hijos de Jacob, al cual puso el nombre de Israel;(K) 35 con los cuales Jehová había hecho pacto, y les mandó diciendo: No temeréis a otros dioses, ni los adoraréis, ni les serviréis, ni les haréis sacrificios.(L) 36 Mas a Jehová, que os sacó de tierra de Egipto con grande poder y brazo extendido, a este temeréis,(M) y a este adoraréis, y a este haréis sacrificio. 37 Los estatutos y derechos y ley y mandamientos que os dio por escrito, cuidaréis siempre de ponerlos por obra, y no temeréis a dioses ajenos. 38 No olvidaréis el pacto que hice con vosotros, ni temeréis a dioses ajenos; 39 mas temed a Jehová vuestro Dios, y él os librará de mano de todos vuestros enemigos. 40 Pero ellos no escucharon; antes hicieron según su costumbre antigua.

41 Así temieron a Jehová aquellas gentes, y al mismo tiempo sirvieron a sus ídolos; y también sus hijos y sus nietos, según como hicieron sus padres, así hacen hasta hoy.

Series of Kings: Azariah (Uzziah) over Judah

15 (A)In the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Azariah son of Amaziah king of Judah became king. 2 He was (B)sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned for fifty-two years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was [a]Jecoliah of Jerusalem. 3 He did what was right in the sight of the Lord, in accordance with everything that his father Amaziah had done. 4 Only (C)the high places were not eliminated; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. 5 (D)And the Lord afflicted the king, so that he had leprosy to the day of his death. And he (E)lived in a separate house, [b]while Jotham the king’s son was in charge of the household, judging the people of the land. 6 Now as for the rest of the acts of Azariah and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 7 And Azariah [c]lay down with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David, and his son Jotham became king in his place.

Zechariah over Israel

8 (F)In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah king of Judah, Zechariah the son of Jeroboam became king over Israel in Samaria for six months. 9 He did evil in the sight of the Lord, just as his fathers had done; he did not desist from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, into which he misled Israel. 10 Then Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him, and (G)struck him in the presence of the people and [d]killed him, and reigned in his place. 11 Now as for the rest of the acts of Zechariah, behold they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel. 12 This is (H)the word of the Lord which He spoke to Jehu, saying, “Your sons to the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.” And so it was.

13 Shallum the son of Jabesh became king in the (I)thirty-ninth year of Uzziah king of Judah, and he reigned for [e]one month in (J)Samaria. 14 Then Menahem the son of Gadi went up from (K)Tirzah and came to Samaria, and struck Shallum son of Jabesh in Samaria, and killed him and became king in his place. 15 Now as for the rest of the acts of Shallum and his conspiracy which he formed, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel. 16 Then Menahem attacked Tiphsah and all who were in it and its borders from Tirzah, because they did not open up to him; so he attacked it and ripped up (L)all its women who were pregnant.

Menahem over Israel

17 In the (M)thirty-ninth year of Azariah king of Judah, Menahem the son of Gadi became king over Israel and reigned for ten years in Samaria. 18 He did evil in the sight of the Lord; for all his days he did not desist from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, into which he misled Israel.

19 (N)Pul, the king of Assyria, came against the land, and Menahem gave Pul a [f]thousand talents of silver so that his hand might be with him to (O)strengthen the [g]kingdom [h]under his rule. 20 Then Menahem collected the money from Israel, from all the [i]mighty men of wealth, from each man fifty shekels of silver to pay the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria returned and did not stay there in the land. 21 Now as for the rest of the acts of Menahem and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 22 And Menahem [j]lay down with his fathers, and his son Pekahiah became king in his place.

Pekahiah over Israel

23 In (P)the fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekahiah the son of Menahem became king over Israel in Samaria, and reigned for two years. 24 He did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not desist from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, into which he misled Israel. 25 Then Pekah the son of Remaliah, his officer, conspired against him and struck him in Samaria, in (Q)the castle of the king’s house with Argob and Arieh; and with him were fifty men of the Gileadites, and he killed him and became king in his place. 26 Now as for the rest of the acts of Pekahiah and everything that he did, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.

Pekah over Israel

27 In (R)the fifty-second year of Azariah king of Judah, (S)Pekah the son of Remaliah became king over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned for twenty years. 28 He did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not desist from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, into which he misled Israel.

29 In the days of Pekah king of Israel, [k](T)Tiglath-pileser the king of Assyria came and took Ijon, Abel-beth-maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali; and (U)he led [l]their populations into exile to Assyria. 30 And Hoshea the son of Elah formed a conspiracy against Pekah the son of Remaliah, and struck him and put him to death, and he became king in his place, in the twentieth year of Jotham the son of Uzziah. 31 Now as for the rest of the acts of Pekah and all that he did, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.

Jotham over Judah

32 In the second year of Pekah the son of Remaliah king of Israel, Jotham the son of [m]Uzziah king of Judah became king. 33 (V)He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned for sixteen years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Jerusha the daughter of Zadok. 34 (W)He did what was right in the sight of the Lord; he acted in accordance with everything that his father Uzziah had done. 35 Only (X)the high places were not eliminated; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. (Y)He built the upper gate of the house of the Lord. 36 Now as for the rest of the acts of Jotham which he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 37 In those days (Z)the Lord began to send Rezin the king of Aram and Pekah the son of Remaliah against Judah. 38 And Jotham [n]lay down with his fathers, and he was buried with his fathers in the city of his father David; and his son Ahaz became king in his place.

Ahaz Reigns over Judah

16 In the seventeenth year of Pekah the son of Remaliah, (AA)Ahaz the son of Jotham, king of Judah, became king. 2 (AB)Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned for sixteen years in Jerusalem; and he did not do what was right in the sight of the Lord his God, as his father David had done. 3 But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, (AC)and he even made his son pass through the fire, (AD)in accordance with the abominations of the nations whom the Lord had [o]driven out before the sons of Israel. 4 And he (AE)sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.

5 Then (AF)Rezin the king of Aram and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem for war; and they besieged Ahaz, (AG)but [p]were not capable of fighting him. 6 At that time Rezin king of Aram restored (AH)Elath to Aram, and drove the Judeans away from [q]Elath; and the [r]Arameans came to Elath and have lived there to this day.

Ahaz Seeks Help of Assyria

7 (AI)So Ahaz sent messengers to (AJ)Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, saying, “I am your servant and your son; come up and save me from the [s]hand of the king of Aram, and from the [t]hand of the king of Israel, who are rising up against me.” 8 And (AK)Ahaz took the silver and gold that was found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king’s house, and sent a gift to the king of Assyria. 9 (AL)So the king of Assyria listened to him; and the king of Assyria went up against Damascus and (AM)captured it, and led the people of it into exile to (AN)Kir, and put Rezin to death.

Damascus Falls

10 Now King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet (AO)Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and he saw the altar which was at Damascus; and King Ahaz sent to (AP)Urijah the priest the [u]pattern of the altar and its model, according to all its workmanship. 11 So Urijah the priest built an altar; according to everything that King Ahaz had sent from Damascus, in that way Urijah the priest made it, [v]before the coming of King Ahaz from Damascus. 12 And when the king came from Damascus, the king saw the altar; then (AQ)the king approached the altar and [w]went up to it, 13 and [x]burned his burnt offering and his meal offering, and poured out his [y]drink offering and sprinkled the blood of his peace offerings on the altar. 14 And (AR)the bronze altar, which was before the Lord, [z]he brought from the front of the house, from between (AS)his altar and the house of the Lord, and he put it on the north side of his altar. 15 Then King Ahaz commanded Urijah the priest, saying, “Upon the great altar [aa]burn (AT)the morning burnt offering, the evening meal offering, the king’s burnt offering and his meal offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, their meal offering, and their [ab]drink offerings; and sprinkle on it all the blood of the burnt offering and all the blood of the sacrifice. But (AU)the bronze altar shall be for me, for making inquiries.” 16 So Urijah the priest acted in accordance with everything that King Ahaz commanded.

17 Then King Ahaz (AV)cut off the borders of the stands, and removed the wash basin from them; he also (AW)took down the [ac]Sea from the bronze oxen which were under it and put it on a pavement of stone. 18 And the covered way for the Sabbath which they had built in the house, and the outer entry of the king, he removed from the house of the Lord because of the king of Assyria.

Hezekiah Reigns over Judah

19 Now as for the rest of the acts of Ahaz which he did, are they not written (AX)in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 20 So (AY)Ahaz [ad]lay down with his fathers, and (AZ)was buried with his fathers in the city of David; and his son Hezekiah reigned in his place.

Hoshea Reigns over Israel

17 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, (BA)Hoshea the son of Elah became king over Israel in Samaria, and reigned for nine years. 2 He did evil in the sight of the Lord, only not as the kings of Israel who preceded him. 3 (BB)Shalmaneser the king of Assyria marched (BC)against him, and Hoshea became his servant and paid him tribute. 4 But the king of Assyria uncovered a conspiracy by Hoshea, who had sent messengers to So, king of Egypt, and had then brought no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year; so the king of Assyria arrested him and confined him in prison.

5 Then the king of Assyria invaded the entire land, and went up to (BD)Samaria and besieged it for three years.

Israel Captive

6 In the ninth year of Hoshea, (BE)the king of Assyria captured Samaria and (BF)led the people of Israel into exile to Assyria, and (BG)settled them in Halah and Habor, on the river of (BH)Gozan, and (BI)in the cities of the Medes.

Why Israel Fell

7 Now (BJ)this came about because the sons of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, (BK)who had brought them up from the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; (BL)and they had [ae]feared other gods. 8 They also [af](BM)followed the [ag]customs of the nations whom the Lord had driven out from the sons of Israel, and in the customs (BN)of the kings of Israel which they had [ah]introduced. 9 And the sons of Israel [ai]did things secretly against the Lord their God which were not right. Moreover, they built for themselves high places in all their towns, from (BO)watchtower to fortified city. 10 And (BP)they set up for themselves memorial stones and [aj](BQ)Asherim on every high hill and under every green tree, 11 and there they burned incense on all the high places as the nations did that the Lord had taken into exile before them; and they did evil things, provoking the Lord. 12 They served idols, (BR)concerning which the Lord had said to them, “You shall not do this thing.” 13 Yet the (BS)Lord warned Israel and Judah [ak](BT)through all His prophets and (BU)every seer, saying, “(BV)Turn back from your evil ways and keep My commandments and My statutes in accordance with all the Law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you [al]through My servants the prophets.” 14 However, they did not listen, but (BW)stiffened their neck [am]like their fathers, who did not believe in the Lord their God. 15 (BX)They rejected His statutes and (BY)His covenant which He made with their fathers, and His warnings which He [an]gave them. And (BZ)they followed [ao]idols and (CA)became empty, and followed the nations that surrounded them, about which the (CB)Lord had commanded them not to do as they did. 16 And they abandoned all the commandments of the Lord their God and made for themselves cast metal images: (CC)two calves. And they (CD)made an [ap]Asherah, and (CE)worshiped all the heavenly [aq]lights, and (CF)served Baal. 17 Then (CG)they made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire, and they (CH)practiced divination and interpreting omens, and (CI)gave themselves over to do evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking Him. 18 So the Lord was very angry with Israel, and He (CJ)removed them from His [ar]sight; (CK)no one was left except the tribe of Judah.

19 (CL)Judah did not keep the commandments of the Lord their God either, but they [as](CM)followed the [at]customs [au]which Israel had [av]introduced. 20 So the Lord rejected all the [aw]descendants of Israel and afflicted them and (CN)handed them over to plunderers, until He had cast them [ax]out of His sight.

21 When (CO)He had torn Israel from the house of David, (CP)they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king. Then (CQ)Jeroboam drove Israel away from following the Lord and misled them into a great sin. 22 And the sons of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he committed; they did not desist from them 23 (CR)until the Lord removed Israel from His sight, (CS)just as He had spoken through all His servants the prophets. (CT)So Israel went into exile from their own land to Assyria until this day.

Cities of Israel Filled with Strangers

24 (CU)Then the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, [ay](CV)Avva, (CW)Hamath, and Sepharvaim, and settled them in the cities of Samaria in place of the sons of Israel. So they took possession of Samaria and lived in its cities. 25 And at the beginning of their living there, they (CX)did not fear the Lord; therefore the Lord sent lions among them that were killing some of them. 26 So they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying, “The nations whom you have taken into exile and settled in the cities of Samaria do not know the custom of the God of the land; so He has sent lions among them, and behold, they are killing them because they do not know the custom of the God of the land.”

27 Then the king of Assyria issued commands, saying, “Take one of the priests there whom you led into [az]exile, and have [ba]him go and live there; and have him teach them the custom of the God of the land.” 28 So one of the priests whom they had led into exile from Samaria came and lived in Bethel, and taught them how they were to fear the Lord.

29 But every nation was still making gods of its own, and they put them (CY)in the houses of the high places which the people of Samaria had made, every nation in their cities in which they lived. 30 (CZ)The men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashima, 31 and the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and (DA)the Sepharvites were burning their children in the fire to (DB)Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of (DC)Sepharvaim. 32 (DD)They also feared the Lord and [bb](DE)appointed from their entire population priests of the high places, who acted for them in the houses of the high places. 33 They feared the Lord, yet they were serving their own gods in accordance with the custom of the nations from among whom they had been taken into exile.

34 To this day they act in accordance with the earlier customs: they do not fear the Lord, nor do they [bc]follow their statutes, their ordinances, the Law, or the commandments which the Lord commanded the sons of Jacob, (DF)whom He named Israel. 35 The Lord made a covenant with them and commanded them, saying, “(DG)You shall not fear other gods, nor (DH)bow down to them, nor (DI)serve them, nor sacrifice to them. 36 But the Lord, (DJ)who brought you up from the land of Egypt with great power and with (DK)an outstretched arm, (DL)Him you shall fear, and to Him you shall bow down, and to Him you shall sacrifice. 37 And the statutes, the ordinances, the Law, and the commandment which He wrote for you, (DM)you shall take care to do always; and you shall not fear other gods. 38 The covenant that I have made with you, (DN)you shall not forget, nor shall you fear other gods. 39 But you shall fear the Lord your God; and He will save you from the hand of all your enemies.” 40 However, they did not listen, but they kept acting in accordance with their earlier custom. 41 (DO)So while these nations feared the Lord, they also served their [bd]idols; their children likewise and their grandchildren, just as their fathers did, they do to this day.
