La reina de Sabá visita a Salomón

(1 R. 10.1-13)

9 Oyendo la reina de Sabá(A) la fama de Salomón, vino a Jerusalén con un séquito muy grande, con camellos cargados de especias aromáticas, oro en abundancia, y piedras preciosas, para probar a Salomón con preguntas difíciles. Y luego que vino a Salomón, habló con él todo lo que en su corazón tenía. 2 Pero Salomón le respondió a todas sus preguntas, y nada hubo que Salomón no le contestase. 3 Y viendo la reina de Sabá la sabiduría de Salomón, y la casa que había edificado, 4 y las viandas de su mesa, las habitaciones de sus oficiales, el estado de sus criados y los vestidos de ellos, sus maestresalas y sus vestidos, y la escalinata por donde subía a la casa de Jehová, se quedó asombrada.

5 Y dijo al rey: Verdad es lo que había oído en mi tierra acerca de tus cosas y de tu sabiduría; 6 pero yo no creía las palabras de ellos, hasta que he venido, y mis ojos han visto; y he aquí que ni aun la mitad de la grandeza de tu sabiduría me había sido dicha; porque tú superas la fama que yo había oído. 7 Bienaventurados tus hombres, y dichosos estos siervos tuyos que están siempre delante de ti, y oyen tu sabiduría. 8 Bendito sea Jehová tu Dios, el cual se ha agradado de ti para ponerte sobre su trono como rey para Jehová tu Dios; por cuanto tu Dios amó a Israel para afirmarlo perpetuamente, por eso te ha puesto por rey sobre ellos, para que hagas juicio y justicia. 9 Y dio al rey ciento veinte talentos de oro, y gran cantidad de especias aromáticas, y piedras preciosas; nunca hubo tales especias aromáticas como las que dio la reina de Sabá al rey Salomón.

10 También los siervos de Hiram y los siervos de Salomón, que habían traído el oro de Ofir, trajeron madera de sándalo, y piedras preciosas. 11 Y de la madera de sándalo el rey hizo gradas en la casa de Jehová y en las casas reales, y arpas y salterios para los cantores; nunca en la tierra de Judá se había visto madera semejante.

12 Y el rey Salomón dio a la reina de Sabá todo lo que ella quiso y le pidió, más de lo que ella había traído al rey. Después ella se volvió y se fue a su tierra con sus siervos.

Riquezas y fama de Salomón

(1 R. 10.14-29; 2 Cr. 1.14-17)

13 El peso del oro que venía a Salomón cada año, era seiscientos sesenta y seis talentos de oro, 14 sin lo que traían los mercaderes y negociantes; también todos los reyes de Arabia y los gobernadores de la tierra traían oro y plata a Salomón. 15 Hizo también el rey Salomón doscientos paveses de oro batido, cada uno de los cuales tenía seiscientos siclos de oro labrado; 16 asimismo trescientos escudos de oro batido, teniendo cada escudo trescientos siclos de oro; y los puso el rey en la casa del bosque del Líbano. 17 Hizo además el rey un gran trono de marfil, y lo cubrió de oro puro. 18 El trono tenía seis gradas, y un estrado de oro fijado al trono, y brazos a uno y otro lado del asiento, y dos leones que estaban junto a los brazos. 19 Había también allí doce leones sobre las seis gradas, a uno y otro lado. Jamás fue hecho trono semejante en reino alguno. 20 Toda la vajilla del rey Salomón era de oro, y toda la vajilla de la casa del bosque del Líbano, de oro puro. En los días de Salomón la plata no era apreciada. 21 Porque la flota del rey iba a Tarsis con los siervos de Hiram, y cada tres años solían venir las naves de Tarsis, y traían oro, plata, marfil, monos y pavos reales.

22 Y excedió el rey Salomón a todos los reyes de la tierra en riqueza y en sabiduría. 23 Y todos los reyes de la tierra procuraban ver el rostro de Salomón, para oír la sabiduría que Dios le había dado. 24 Cada uno de estos traía su presente, alhajas de plata, alhajas de oro, vestidos, armas, perfumes, caballos y mulos, todos los años. 25 Tuvo también Salomón cuatro mil caballerizas para sus caballos y carros, y doce mil jinetes,(B) los cuales puso en las ciudades de los carros, y con el rey en Jerusalén. 26 Y tuvo dominio sobre todos los reyes desde el Éufrates hasta la tierra de los filisteos, y hasta la frontera de Egipto.(C) 27 Y acumuló el rey plata en Jerusalén como piedras,(D) y cedros como los cabrahígos de la Sefela en abundancia. 28 Traían también caballos para Salomón, de Egipto(E) y de todos los países.

Muerte de Salomón

(1 R. 11.41-43)

29 Los demás hechos de Salomón, primeros y postreros, ¿no están todos escritos en los libros del profeta Natán, en la profecía de Ahías silonita, y en la profecía del vidente Iddo contra Jeroboam hijo de Nabat? 30 Reinó Salomón en Jerusalén sobre todo Israel cuarenta años. 31 Y durmió Salomón con sus padres, y lo sepultaron en la ciudad de David su padre; y reinó en su lugar Roboam su hijo.

Rebelión de Israel

(1 R. 12.1-24)

10 Roboam fue a Siquem, porque en Siquem se había reunido todo Israel para hacerlo rey. 2 Y cuando lo oyó Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el cual estaba en Egipto, adonde había huido a causa del rey Salomón, volvió de Egipto. 3 Y enviaron y le llamaron. Vino, pues, Jeroboam, y todo Israel, y hablaron a Roboam, diciendo: 4 Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo; ahora alivia algo de la dura servidumbre y del pesado yugo con que tu padre nos apremió, y te serviremos. 5 Y él les dijo: Volved a mí de aquí a tres días. Y el pueblo se fue.

6 Entonces el rey Roboam tomó consejo con los ancianos que habían estado delante de Salomón su padre cuando vivía, y les dijo: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que responda a este pueblo? 7 Y ellos le contestaron diciendo: Si te condujeres humanamente con este pueblo, y les agradares, y les hablares buenas palabras, ellos te servirán siempre. 8 Mas él, dejando el consejo que le dieron los ancianos, tomó consejo con los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, y que estaban a su servicio. 9 Y les dijo: ¿Qué aconsejáis vosotros que respondamos a este pueblo, que me ha hablado, diciendo: Alivia algo del yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros? 10 Entonces los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, le contestaron: Así dirás al pueblo que te ha hablado diciendo: Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo, mas tú disminuye nuestra carga. Así les dirás: Mi dedo más pequeño es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre. 11 Así que, si mi padre os cargó de yugo pesado, yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, y yo con escorpiones.

12 Vino, pues, Jeroboam con todo el pueblo a Roboam al tercer día, según el rey les había mandado diciendo: Volved a mí de aquí a tres días. 13 Y el rey les respondió ásperamente; pues dejó el rey Roboam el consejo de los ancianos, 14 y les habló conforme al consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo: Mi padre hizo pesado vuestro yugo, pero yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, mas yo con escorpiones. 15 Y no escuchó el rey al pueblo; porque la causa era de Dios, para que Jehová cumpliera la palabra que había hablado por Ahías silonita a Jeroboam hijo de Nabat.

16 Y viendo todo Israel que el rey no les había oído, respondió el pueblo al rey, diciendo: ¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? No tenemos herencia en el hijo de Isaí. ¡Israel, cada uno a sus tiendas!(F) ¡David, mira ahora por tu casa! Así se fue todo Israel a sus tiendas. 17 Mas reinó Roboam sobre los hijos de Israel que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá. 18 Envió luego el rey Roboam a Adoram, que tenía cargo de los tributos; pero le apedrearon los hijos de Israel, y murió. Entonces se apresuró el rey Roboam, y subiendo en su carro huyó a Jerusalén. 19 Así se apartó Israel de la casa de David hasta hoy.

11 Cuando vino Roboam a Jerusalén, reunió de la casa de Judá y de Benjamín a ciento ochenta mil hombres escogidos de guerra, para pelear contra Israel y hacer volver el reino a Roboam. 2 Mas vino palabra de Jehová a Semaías varón de Dios, diciendo: 3 Habla a Roboam hijo de Salomón, rey de Judá, y a todos los israelitas en Judá y Benjamín, diciéndoles: 4 Así ha dicho Jehová: No subáis, ni peleéis contra vuestros hermanos; vuélvase cada uno a su casa, porque yo he hecho esto. Y ellos oyeron la palabra de Jehová y se volvieron, y no fueron contra Jeroboam.

Prosperidad de Roboam

5 Y habitó Roboam en Jerusalén, y edificó ciudades para fortificar a Judá. 6 Edificó Belén, Etam, Tecoa, 7 Bet-sur, Soco, Adulam, 8 Gat, Maresa, Zif, 9 Adoraim, Laquis, Azeca, 10 Zora, Ajalón y Hebrón, que eran ciudades fortificadas de Judá y Benjamín. 11 Reforzó también las fortalezas, y puso en ellas capitanes, y provisiones, vino y aceite; 12 y en todas las ciudades puso escudos y lanzas. Las fortificó, pues, en gran manera; y Judá y Benjamín le estaban sujetos.

13 Y los sacerdotes y levitas que estaban en todo Israel, se juntaron a él desde todos los lugares donde vivían. 14 Porque los levitas dejaban sus ejidos y sus posesiones, y venían a Judá y a Jerusalén; pues Jeroboam y sus hijos los excluyeron del ministerio de Jehová. 15 Y él designó sus propios sacerdotes para los lugares altos, y para los demonios, y para los becerros que él había hecho.(G) 16 Tras aquellos acudieron también de todas las tribus de Israel los que habían puesto su corazón en buscar a Jehová Dios de Israel; y vinieron a Jerusalén para ofrecer sacrificios a Jehová, el Dios de sus padres. 17 Así fortalecieron el reino de Judá, y confirmaron a Roboam hijo de Salomón, por tres años; porque tres años anduvieron en el camino de David y de Salomón.

18 Y tomó Roboam por mujer a Mahalat hija de Jerimot, hijo de David y de Abihail hija de Eliab, hijo de Isaí, 19 la cual le dio a luz estos hijos: Jeús, Semarías y Zaham. 20 Después de ella tomó a Maaca hija de Absalón, la cual le dio a luz Abías, Atai, Ziza y Selomit. 21 Pero Roboam amó a Maaca hija de Absalón sobre todas sus mujeres y concubinas; porque tomó dieciocho mujeres y sesenta concubinas, y engendró veintiocho hijos y sesenta hijas. 22 Y puso Roboam a Abías hijo de Maaca por jefe y príncipe de sus hermanos, porque quería hacerle rey. 23 Obró sagazmente, y esparció a todos sus hijos por todas las tierras de Judá y de Benjamín, y por todas las ciudades fortificadas, y les dio provisiones en abundancia, y muchas mujeres.

Sisac invade Judá

(1 R. 14.21-31)

12 Cuando Roboam había consolidado el reino, dejó la ley de Jehová, y todo Israel con él. 2 Y por cuanto se habían rebelado contra Jehová, en el quinto año del rey Roboam subió Sisac rey de Egipto contra Jerusalén, 3 con mil doscientos carros, y con sesenta mil hombres de a caballo; mas el pueblo que venía con él de Egipto, esto es, de libios, suquienos y etíopes, no tenía número. 4 Y tomó las ciudades fortificadas de Judá, y llegó hasta Jerusalén. 5 Entonces vino el profeta Semaías a Roboam y a los príncipes de Judá, que estaban reunidos en Jerusalén por causa de Sisac, y les dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová: Vosotros me habéis dejado, y yo también os he dejado en manos de Sisac. 6 Y los príncipes de Israel y el rey se humillaron, y dijeron: Justo es Jehová. 7 Y cuando Jehová vio que se habían humillado, vino palabra de Jehová a Semaías, diciendo: Se han humillado; no los destruiré; antes los salvaré en breve, y no se derramará mi ira contra Jerusalén por mano de Sisac. 8 Pero serán sus siervos, para que sepan lo que es servirme a mí, y qué es servir a los reinos de las naciones.

9 Subió, pues, Sisac rey de Egipto a Jerusalén, y tomó los tesoros de la casa de Jehová, y los tesoros de la casa del rey; todo lo llevó, y tomó los escudos de oro que Salomón había hecho.(H) 10 Y en lugar de ellos hizo el rey Roboam escudos de bronce, y los entregó a los jefes de la guardia, los cuales custodiaban la entrada de la casa del rey. 11 Cuando el rey iba a la casa de Jehová, venían los de la guardia y los llevaban, y después los volvían a la cámara de la guardia. 12 Y cuando él se humilló, la ira de Jehová se apartó de él, para no destruirlo del todo; y también en Judá las cosas fueron bien.

13 Fortalecido, pues, Roboam, reinó en Jerusalén; y era Roboam de cuarenta y un años cuando comenzó a reinar, y diecisiete años reinó en Jerusalén, ciudad que escogió Jehová de todas las tribus de Israel para poner en ella su nombre. Y el nombre de la madre de Roboam fue Naama amonita. 14 E hizo lo malo, porque no dispuso su corazón para buscar a Jehová.

15 Las cosas de Roboam, primeras y postreras, ¿no están escritas en los libros del profeta Semaías y del vidente Iddo, en el registro de las familias? Y entre Roboam y Jeroboam hubo guerra constante. 16 Y durmió Roboam con sus padres, y fue sepultado en la ciudad de David; y reinó en su lugar Abías su hijo.

Visit of the Queen of Sheba

9 (A)Now when the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon, she came to Jerusalem to test Solomon with riddles. She had a very large entourage, with camels carrying balsam oil and a large amount of gold and precious stones; and when she came to Solomon, she spoke with him about everything that was on her heart. 2 Solomon [a]answered all her questions; nothing was hidden from Solomon which he did not [b]explain to her. 3 When the queen of Sheba had seen the wisdom of Solomon, the house which he had built, 4 the food at his table, the seating of his servants, the attendance of his ministers and their attire, his cupbearers and their attire, and [c]his stairway by which he went up to the house of the Lord, she was breathless. 5 Then she said to the king, “It was a true [d]story that I heard in my own land about your words and your wisdom. 6 But I did not believe their [e]stories until I came and my own eyes saw it all. And behold, not even half of the greatness of your wisdom was reported to me. You have surpassed the report that I heard. 7 How [f]blessed are your men, how [g]blessed are these servants of yours, who stand before you continually and hear your wisdom! 8 Blessed be the Lord your God who delighted in you, (B)setting you on His throne as king for the Lord your God; (C)because your God loved Israel, establishing them forever, He made you king over them, to carry out justice and righteousness.” 9 Then she gave the king [h]120 talents of gold and a very great amount of balsam oil and precious stones; there had never been balsam oil like that which the queen of Sheba gave King Solomon.

10 The servants of Huram and the servants of Solomon (D)who brought gold from Ophir, also brought algum trees and precious stones. 11 From the algum trees the king made steps to the house of the Lord and for the king’s palace, and lyres and harps for the singers; and nothing like them was seen before in the land of Judah.

12 King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba her every desire, whatever she requested, besides gifts equal to what she had brought to the king. Then she turned and went to her own land with her servants.

Solomon’s Wealth and Power

13 (E)Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was [i]666 talents of gold, 14 besides what the traders and merchants brought; and all (F)the kings of Arabia and the governors of the country brought gold and silver to Solomon. 15 King Solomon made two hundred large shields of beaten gold, [j]using six hundred shekels of beaten gold on each large shield. 16 He made three hundred shields of beaten gold, [k]using three hundred shekels of gold on each shield; and the king put them in the house of the forest of Lebanon.

17 Moreover, the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it with pure gold. 18 There were six steps to the throne and a footstool in gold attached to the throne, and [l]arms [m]on each side of the seat, and two lions standing beside the [n]arms. 19 Twelve lions were standing there on the six steps on the one side and on the other; nothing like it was made for any other kingdom. 20 All King Solomon’s drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold; silver was not considered [o]valuable in the days of Solomon. 21 (G)For the king had ships which went to Tarshish with the servants of Huram; once every three years the ships of Tarshish came bringing gold and silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks.

22 (H)So King Solomon became greater than all the kings of the earth in wealth and wisdom. 23 And all the kings of the earth were seeking the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom which God had put in his heart. 24 (I)They were bringing, each of them his gift: articles of silver and gold, garments, weapons, balsam oil, horses, and mules, so much year by year.

25 Now Solomon had (J)four thousand stalls for horses and chariots and twelve thousand horsemen, and he stationed them in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem. 26 (K)He was ruler over all the kings from the Euphrates River to the land of the Philistines, and as far as the border of Egypt. 27 (L)And the king made silver as common as stones in Jerusalem, and he made cedars as plentiful as sycamore trees that are in the [p]lowland. 28 (M)And they were bringing horses for Solomon from Egypt and from all countries.

29 (N)Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, from the first to the last, (O)are they not written in the [q]records of Nathan the prophet, in the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and in the visions of [r]Iddo the seer concerning Jeroboam the son of Nebat? 30 (P)Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel for forty years.

Death of Solomon

31 And Solomon [s]lay down with his fathers and was buried in (Q)the city of his father David; and his son Rehoboam reigned in his place.

Rehoboam’s Reign of Foolishness

10 (R)Then Rehoboam went to Shechem, because all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king. 2 When Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard about it ((S)he was in Egypt where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon), Jeroboam returned from Egypt. 3 So they sent word and summoned him. When Jeroboam and all Israel came, they spoke to Rehoboam, saying, 4 “Your father made our (T)yoke hard; but now, lighten the hard labor imposed by your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.” 5 He said to them, “Return to me again in three days.” So the people departed.

6 And then King Rehoboam (U)consulted with the elders who had [t]served his father Solomon while he was still alive, saying, “How do you advise me to answer this people?” 7 They spoke to him, saying, “If you are kind to this people and please them and (V)speak pleasant words to them, then they will be your servants always.” 8 But he (W)ignored the advice of the elders which they had given him, and consulted with the young men who had grown up with him [u]and served him. 9 He said to them, “What advice do you give, so that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke which your father put on us’?” 10 The young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “This is what you should say to the people who spoke to you, saying: ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter for us!’ You should speak this way to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist! 11 Now then, my father loaded you with a heavy yoke; yet I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with [v]scorpions!’”

12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, just as the king had [w]directed, saying, “Return to me on the third day.” 13 The king answered them harshly, and King Rehoboam ignored the advice of the elders. 14 He spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, “[x]My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with [y]scorpions.” 15 So the king did not listen to the people, (X)because it was a turn of events from God (Y)so that the Lord might establish His word, which He spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

16 When all Israel saw that the king had not listened to them, the people replied to the king, saying,

“(Z)What share do we have in David?
We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse.
Everyone to your tents, Israel!
Now look after your own house, David!”

(AA)So all Israel went away to their tents. 17 But as for the sons of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. 18 Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was in (AB)charge of the forced labor, and the sons of Israel stoned him [z]to death. And King Rehoboam hurried to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem. 19 So (AC)Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.

Rehoboam Reigns over Judah and Builds Cities

11 (AD)Now when Rehoboam had come to Jerusalem, he assembled the house of Judah and Benjamin, 180,000 chosen warriors, to fight against Israel to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam. 2 But the word of the Lord came to (AE)Shemaiah the man of God, saying, 3 “Tell Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying, 4 ‘This is what the Lord says: “You shall not go up nor fight against (AF)your relatives; return, every man, to his house, (AG)for this [aa]event is from Me.”’” So they listened to the words of the Lord and returned from going against Jeroboam.

5 Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem and (AH)built cities for defense in Judah. 6 He built Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa, 7 Beth-zur, Soco, Adullam, 8 Gath, Mareshah, Ziph, 9 Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah, 10 Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron, which are fortified cities in Judah and Benjamin. 11 He also strengthened the fortresses and put officers in them and supplies of food, oil, and wine. 12 He put shields and spears in every city and strengthened them greatly. So he held Judah and Benjamin.

13 Moreover, the priests and the Levites who were in all Israel also stood with him from all their districts.

Jeroboam Appoints False Priests

14 For (AI)the Levites left their pasture lands and their property and went to Judah and Jerusalem, because (AJ)Jeroboam and his sons had excluded them from serving as priests to the Lord. 15 (AK)He set up priests of his own for the high places, for the satyrs and the calves which he had made. 16 (AL)Those from all the tribes of Israel who set their hearts on seeking the Lord God of Israel [ab]followed them to Jerusalem, to sacrifice to the Lord God of their fathers. 17 (AM)They strengthened the kingdom of Judah and supported Rehoboam the son of Solomon for three years, for they walked in the way of David and Solomon for three years.

Rehoboam’s Family

18 Then Rehoboam married Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David and of Abihail the daughter of (AN)Eliab the son of Jesse, 19 and she bore to him sons: Jeush, Shemariah, and Zaham. 20 After her he married (AO)Maacah the daughter of [ac]Absalom, and she bore to him Abijah, Attai, Ziza, and Shelomith. 21 Rehoboam loved Maacah the daughter of Absalom more than all his other wives and concubines. For (AP)he had taken eighteen wives and sixty concubines, and fathered twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters. 22 (AQ)Rehoboam appointed Abijah the son of Maacah as head and leader among his brothers, for he intended to make him king. 23 He acted wisely and distributed [ad]some of his sons through all the territories of Judah and Benjamin to all the fortified cities, and he gave them plenty of provisions. And he sought many wives for them.

Shishak of Egypt Invades Judah

12 (AR)When the kingdom of Rehoboam was established and strong, (AS)he and all Israel with him abandoned the Law of the Lord. 2 (AT)And it came about in King Rehoboam’s fifth year, because they had been unfaithful to the Lord, that (AU)Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem 3 with 1,200 chariots and sixty thousand horsemen. And the people who came with him from Egypt were innumerable: (AV)the Lubim, the Sukkiim, and the Ethiopians. 4 And he captured (AW)the fortified cities of Judah and came as far as Jerusalem. 5 Then (AX)Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the princes of Judah who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak, and he said to them, “This is what the Lord says: ‘(AY)You have abandoned Me, so I also have abandoned you [ae]to Shishak.’” 6 So the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “The (AZ)Lord is righteous.”

7 When the Lord saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah, saying, “(BA)They have humbled themselves, so I will not destroy them; and I will grant them a little deliverance, and (BB)My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem by means of Shishak. 8 But they will become his slaves, so (BC)that they may learn the difference between My service and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.”

Plunder Impoverishes Judah

9 (BD)So Shishak king of Egypt went up against Jerusalem, and he took the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king’s palace. He took everything; (BE)he even took the gold shields which Solomon had made. 10 Then King Rehoboam made shields of bronze in their place and committed them to the [af]care of the commanders of the [ag]guards who guarded the entrance of the king’s house. 11 As often as the king entered the house of the Lord, the [ah]guards came and carried them and then brought them back into the [ai]guards’ room. 12 And (BF)when he humbled himself, the anger of the Lord turned away from him, so as not to destroy him completely; and conditions (BG)were also good in Judah.

13 (BH)So King Rehoboam became powerful in Jerusalem and reigned there. For Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord had chosen from all the tribes of Israel, to put His name there. And his mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonitess. 14 But he did evil (BI)because he did not set his heart to seek the Lord.

15 (BJ)Now the acts of Rehoboam, from the first to the last, are they not written in the [aj]records of (BK)Shemaiah the prophet and of (BL)Iddo the seer, according to genealogical enrollment? And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually. 16 And Rehoboam [ak]lay down with his fathers and was buried in the city of David; and his son (BM)Abijah became king in his place.
