Reinado de Ocozías de Judá

(2 R. 8.25-29)

22 Los habitantes de Jerusalén hicieron rey en lugar de Joram a Ocozías su hijo menor; porque una banda armada que había venido con los árabes al campamento, había matado a todos los mayores, por lo cual reinó Ocozías, hijo de Joram rey de Judá. 2 Cuando Ocozías comenzó a reinar era de cuarenta y dos años, y reinó un año en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Atalía, hija de Omri. 3 También él anduvo en los caminos de la casa de Acab, pues su madre le aconsejaba a que actuase impíamente. 4 Hizo, pues, lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, como la casa de Acab; porque después de la muerte de su padre, ellos le aconsejaron para su perdición. 5 Y él anduvo en los consejos de ellos, y fue a la guerra con Joram hijo de Acab, rey de Israel, contra Hazael rey de Siria, a Ramot de Galaad, donde los sirios hirieron a Joram. 6 Y volvió para curarse en Jezreel de las heridas que le habían hecho en Ramot, peleando contra Hazael rey de Siria. Y descendió Ocozías hijo de Joram, rey de Judá, para visitar a Joram hijo de Acab en Jezreel, porque allí estaba enfermo.

Jehú mata a Ocozías

(2 R. 9.27-29)

7 Pero esto venía de Dios, para que Ocozías fuese destruido viniendo a Joram; porque habiendo venido, salió con Joram contra Jehú hijo de Nimsi, al cual Jehová había ungido para que exterminara la familia de Acab. 8 Y haciendo juicio Jehú contra la casa de Acab, halló a los príncipes de Judá, y a los hijos de los hermanos de Ocozías, que servían a Ocozías, y los mató. 9 Y buscando a Ocozías, el cual se había escondido en Samaria, lo hallaron y lo trajeron a Jehú, y le mataron; y le dieron sepultura, porque dijeron: Es hijo de Josafat, quien de todo su corazón buscó a Jehová. Y la casa de Ocozías no tenía fuerzas para poder retener el reino.

Atalía usurpa el trono

(2 R. 11.1-21)

10 Entonces Atalía madre de Ocozías, viendo que su hijo era muerto, se levantó y exterminó toda la descendencia real de la casa de Judá. 11 Pero Josabet, hija del rey, tomó a Joás hijo de Ocozías, y escondiéndolo de entre los demás hijos del rey, a los cuales mataban, le guardó a él y a su ama en uno de los aposentos. Así lo escondió Josabet, hija del rey Joram, mujer del sacerdote Joiada (porque ella era hermana de Ocozías), de delante de Atalía, y no lo mataron. 12 Y estuvo con ellos escondido en la casa de Dios seis años. Entre tanto, Atalía reinaba en el país.

23 En el séptimo año se animó Joiada, y tomó consigo en alianza a los jefes de centenas Azarías hijo de Jeroham, Ismael hijo de Johanán, Azarías hijo de Obed, Maasías hijo de Adaía, y Elisafat hijo de Zicri, 2 los cuales recorrieron el país de Judá, y reunieron a los levitas de todas las ciudades de Judá y a los príncipes de las familias de Israel, y vinieron a Jerusalén. 3 Y toda la multitud hizo pacto con el rey en la casa de Dios. Y Joiada les dijo: He aquí el hijo del rey, el cual reinará, como Jehová ha dicho respecto a los hijos de David.(A) 4 Ahora haced esto: una tercera parte de vosotros, los que entran el día de reposo,[a] estarán de porteros con los sacerdotes y los levitas. 5 Otra tercera parte, a la casa del rey; y la otra tercera parte, a la puerta del Cimiento; y todo el pueblo estará en los patios de la casa de Jehová. 6 Y ninguno entre en la casa de Jehová, sino los sacerdotes y levitas que ministran; estos entrarán, porque están consagrados; y todo el pueblo hará guardia delante de Jehová. 7 Y los levitas rodearán al rey por todas partes, y cada uno tendrá sus armas en la mano; cualquiera que entre en la casa, que muera; y estaréis con el rey cuando entre y cuando salga.

8 Y los levitas y todo Judá lo hicieron todo como lo había mandado el sacerdote Joiada; y tomó cada jefe a los suyos, los que entraban el día de reposo,[b] y los que salían el día de reposo;[c] porque el sacerdote Joiada no dio licencia a las compañías. 9 Dio también el sacerdote Joiada a los jefes de centenas las lanzas, los paveses y los escudos que habían sido del rey David, y que estaban en la casa de Dios; 10 y puso en orden a todo el pueblo, teniendo cada uno su espada en la mano, desde el rincón derecho del templo hasta el izquierdo, hacia el altar y la casa, alrededor del rey por todas partes. 11 Entonces sacaron al hijo del rey, y le pusieron la corona y el testimonio, y lo proclamaron rey; y Joiada y sus hijos lo ungieron, diciendo luego: ¡Viva el rey!

12 Cuando Atalía oyó el estruendo de la gente que corría, y de los que aclamaban al rey, vino al pueblo a la casa de Jehová; 13 y mirando, vio al rey que estaba junto a su columna a la entrada, y los príncipes y los trompeteros junto al rey, y que todo el pueblo de la tierra mostraba alegría, y sonaba bocinas, y los cantores con instrumentos de música dirigían la alabanza. Entonces Atalía rasgó sus vestidos, y dijo: ¡Traición! ¡Traición! 14 Pero el sacerdote Joiada mandó que salieran los jefes de centenas del ejército, y les dijo: Sacadla fuera del recinto, y al que la siguiere, matadlo a filo de espada; porque el sacerdote había mandado que no la matasen en la casa de Jehová. 15 Ellos, pues, le echaron mano, y luego que ella hubo pasado la entrada de la puerta de los caballos de la casa del rey, allí la mataron.

16 Y Joiada hizo pacto entre sí y todo el pueblo y el rey, que serían pueblo de Jehová. 17 Después de esto entró todo el pueblo en el templo de Baal, y lo derribaron, y también sus altares; e hicieron pedazos sus imágenes, y mataron delante de los altares a Matán, sacerdote de Baal. 18 Luego ordenó Joiada los oficios en la casa de Jehová, bajo la mano de los sacerdotes y levitas, según David los había distribuido en la casa de Jehová, para ofrecer a Jehová los holocaustos, como está escrito en la ley de Moisés, con gozo y con cánticos, conforme a la disposición de David. 19 Puso también porteros a las puertas de la casa de Jehová, para que por ninguna vía entrase ningún inmundo. 20 Llamó después a los jefes de centenas, y a los principales, a los que gobernaban el pueblo y a todo el pueblo de la tierra, para conducir al rey desde la casa de Jehová; y cuando llegaron a la mitad de la puerta mayor de la casa del rey, sentaron al rey sobre el trono del reino. 21 Y se regocijó todo el pueblo del país; y la ciudad estuvo tranquila, después que mataron a Atalía a filo de espada.

Reinado de Joás de Judá

(2 R. 12.1-21)

24 De siete años era Joás cuando comenzó a reinar, y cuarenta años reinó en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Sibia, de Beerseba. 2 E hizo Joás lo recto ante los ojos de Jehová todos los días de Joiada el sacerdote. 3 Y Joiada tomó para él dos mujeres; y engendró hijos e hijas.

4 Después de esto, aconteció que Joás decidió restaurar la casa de Jehová. 5 Y reunió a los sacerdotes y los levitas, y les dijo: Salid por las ciudades de Judá, y recoged dinero de todo Israel, para que cada año sea reparada la casa de vuestro Dios; y vosotros poned diligencia en el asunto. Pero los levitas no pusieron diligencia. 6 Por lo cual el rey llamó al sumo sacerdote Joiada y le dijo: ¿Por qué no has procurado que los levitas traigan de Judá y de Jerusalén la ofrenda que Moisés siervo de Jehová impuso a la congregación de Israel para el tabernáculo del testimonio?(B) 7 Porque la impía Atalía y sus hijos habían destruido la casa de Dios, y además habían gastado en los ídolos todas las cosas consagradas de la casa de Jehová.

8 Mandó, pues, el rey que hiciesen un arca, la cual pusieron fuera, a la puerta de la casa de Jehová; 9 e hicieron pregonar en Judá y en Jerusalén, que trajesen a Jehová la ofrenda que Moisés siervo de Dios había impuesto a Israel en el desierto. 10 Y todos los jefes y todo el pueblo se gozaron, y trajeron ofrendas, y las echaron en el arca hasta llenarla. 11 Y cuando venía el tiempo para llevar el arca al secretario del rey por mano de los levitas, cuando veían que había mucho dinero, venía el escriba del rey, y el que estaba puesto por el sumo sacerdote, y llevaban el arca, y la vaciaban, y la volvían a su lugar. Así lo hacían de día en día, y recogían mucho dinero, 12 y el rey y Joiada lo daban a los que hacían el trabajo del servicio de la casa de Jehová; y tomaban canteros y carpinteros que reparasen la casa de Jehová, y artífices en hierro y bronce para componer la casa. 13 Hacían, pues, los artesanos la obra, y por sus manos la obra fue restaurada, y restituyeron la casa de Dios a su antigua condición, y la consolidaron. 14 Y cuando terminaron, trajeron al rey y a Joiada lo que quedaba del dinero, e hicieron de él utensilios para la casa de Jehová, utensilios para el servicio, morteros, cucharas, vasos de oro y de plata. Y sacrificaban holocaustos continuamente en la casa de Jehová todos los días de Joiada.

15 Mas Joiada envejeció, y murió lleno de días; de ciento treinta años era cuando murió. 16 Y lo sepultaron en la ciudad de David con los reyes, por cuanto había hecho bien con Israel, y para con Dios, y con su casa.

17 Muerto Joiada, vinieron los príncipes de Judá y ofrecieron obediencia al rey; y el rey los oyó. 18 Y desampararon la casa de Jehová el Dios de sus padres, y sirvieron a los símbolos de Asera y a las imágenes esculpidas. Entonces la ira de Dios vino sobre Judá y Jerusalén por este su pecado. 19 Y les envió profetas para que los volviesen a Jehová, los cuales les amonestaron; mas ellos no los escucharon.

20 Entonces el Espíritu de Dios vino sobre Zacarías hijo del sacerdote Joiada; y puesto en pie, donde estaba más alto que el pueblo, les dijo: Así ha dicho Dios: ¿Por qué quebrantáis los mandamientos de Jehová? No os vendrá bien por ello; porque por haber dejado a Jehová, él también os abandonará. 21 Pero ellos hicieron conspiración contra él, y por mandato del rey lo apedrearon hasta matarlo, en el patio de la casa de Jehová.(C) 22 Así el rey Joás no se acordó de la misericordia que Joiada padre de Zacarías había hecho con él, antes mató a su hijo, quien dijo al morir: Jehová lo vea y lo demande.

23 A la vuelta del año subió contra él el ejército de Siria; y vinieron a Judá y a Jerusalén, y destruyeron en el pueblo a todos los principales de él, y enviaron todo el botín al rey a Damasco. 24 Porque aunque el ejército de Siria había venido con poca gente, Jehová entregó en sus manos un ejército muy numeroso, por cuanto habían dejado a Jehová el Dios de sus padres. Así ejecutaron juicios contra Joás.

25 Y cuando se fueron los sirios, lo dejaron agobiado por sus dolencias; y conspiraron contra él sus siervos a causa de la sangre de los hijos de Joiada el sacerdote, y lo hirieron en su cama, y murió. Y lo sepultaron en la ciudad de David, pero no en los sepulcros de los reyes. 26 Los que conspiraron contra él fueron Zabad hijo de Simeat amonita, y Jozabad hijo de Simrit moabita. 27 En cuanto a los hijos de Joás, y la multiplicación que hizo de las rentas, y la restauración de la casa de Jehová, he aquí está escrito en la historia del libro de los reyes. Y reinó en su lugar Amasías su hijo.

Reinado de Amasías

(2 R. 14.1-22)

25 De veinticinco años era Amasías cuando comenzó a reinar, y veintinueve años reinó en Jerusalén; el nombre de su madre fue Joadán, de Jerusalén. 2 Hizo él lo recto ante los ojos de Jehová, aunque no de perfecto corazón. 3 Y luego que fue confirmado en el reino, mató a los siervos que habían matado al rey su padre. 4 Pero no mató a los hijos de ellos, según lo que está escrito en la ley, en el libro de Moisés, donde Jehová mandó diciendo: No morirán los padres por los hijos, ni los hijos por los padres; mas cada uno morirá por su pecado.(D)

5 Reunió luego Amasías a Judá, y con arreglo a las familias les puso jefes de millares y de centenas sobre todo Judá y Benjamín. Después puso en lista a todos los de veinte años arriba, y fueron hallados trescientos mil escogidos para salir a la guerra, que tenían lanza y escudo. 6 Y de Israel tomó a sueldo por cien talentos de plata, a cien mil hombres valientes. 7 Mas un varón de Dios vino a él y le dijo: Rey, no vaya contigo el ejército de Israel; porque Jehová no está con Israel, ni con todos los hijos de Efraín. 8 Pero si vas así, si lo haces, y te esfuerzas para pelear, Dios te hará caer delante de los enemigos; porque en Dios está el poder, o para ayudar, o para derribar. 9 Y Amasías dijo al varón de Dios: ¿Qué, pues, se hará de los cien talentos que he dado al ejército de Israel? Y el varón de Dios respondió: Jehová puede darte mucho más que esto. 10 Entonces Amasías apartó el ejército de la gente que había venido a él de Efraín, para que se fuesen a sus casas; y ellos se enojaron grandemente contra Judá, y volvieron a sus casas encolerizados. 11 Esforzándose entonces Amasías, sacó a su pueblo, y vino al Valle de la Sal, y mató de los hijos de Seir diez mil.(E) 12 Y los hijos de Judá tomaron vivos a otros diez mil, los cuales llevaron a la cumbre de un peñasco, y de allí los despeñaron, y todos se hicieron pedazos. 13 Mas los del ejército que Amasías había despedido, para que no fuesen con él a la guerra, invadieron las ciudades de Judá, desde Samaria hasta Bet-horón, y mataron a tres mil de ellos, y tomaron gran despojo.

14 Volviendo luego Amasías de la matanza de los edomitas, trajo también consigo los dioses de los hijos de Seir, y los puso ante sí por dioses, y los adoró, y les quemó incienso. 15 Por esto se encendió la ira de Jehová contra Amasías, y envió a él un profeta, que le dijo: ¿Por qué has buscado los dioses de otra nación, que no libraron a su pueblo de tus manos? 16 Y hablándole el profeta estas cosas, él le respondió: ¿Te han puesto a ti por consejero del rey? Déjate de eso. ¿Por qué quieres que te maten? Y cuando terminó de hablar, el profeta dijo luego: Yo sé que Dios ha decretado destruirte, porque has hecho esto, y no obedeciste mi consejo.

17 Y Amasías rey de Judá, después de tomar consejo, envió a decir a Joás hijo de Joacaz, hijo de Jehú, rey de Israel: Ven, y veámonos cara a cara. 18 Entonces Joás rey de Israel envió a decir a Amasías rey de Judá: El cardo que estaba en el Líbano envió al cedro que estaba en el Líbano, diciendo: Da tu hija a mi hijo por mujer. Y he aquí que las fieras que estaban en el Líbano pasaron, y hollaron el cardo. 19 Tú dices: He aquí he derrotado a Edom; y tu corazón se enaltece para gloriarte. Quédate ahora en tu casa. ¿Para qué provocas un mal en que puedas caer tú y Judá contigo?

20 Mas Amasías no quiso oír; porque era la voluntad de Dios, que los quería entregar en manos de sus enemigos, por cuanto habían buscado los dioses de Edom. 21 Subió, pues, Joás rey de Israel, y se vieron cara a cara él y Amasías rey de Judá en la batalla de Bet-semes, la cual es de Judá. 22 Pero cayó Judá delante de Israel, y huyó cada uno a su casa. 23 Y Joás rey de Israel apresó en Bet-semes a Amasías rey de Judá, hijo de Joás, hijo de Joacaz, y lo llevó a Jerusalén; y derribó el muro de Jerusalén desde la puerta de Efraín hasta la puerta del ángulo, un tramo de cuatrocientos codos. 24 Asimismo tomó todo el oro y la plata, y todos los utensilios que se hallaron en la casa de Dios en casa de Obed-edom, y los tesoros de la casa del rey, y los hijos de los nobles; después volvió a Samaria.

25 Y vivió Amasías hijo de Joás, rey de Judá, quince años después de la muerte de Joás hijo de Joacaz, rey de Israel. 26 Los demás hechos de Amasías, primeros y postreros, ¿no están escritos en el libro de los reyes de Judá y de Israel? 27 Desde el tiempo en que Amasías se apartó de Jehová, empezaron a conspirar contra él en Jerusalén; y habiendo él huido a Laquis, enviaron tras él a Laquis, y allá lo mataron; 28 y lo trajeron en caballos, y lo sepultaron con sus padres en la ciudad de Judá.

Ahaziah Succeeds Jehoram in Judah

22 (A)Then the inhabitants of Jerusalem made [a]Ahaziah, his youngest son, king in his place, for the band of men who came with (B)the Arabs to the camp had killed all the older sons. So Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign. 2 Ahaziah was [b]twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned for one year in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Athaliah, the [c]granddaughter of Omri. 3 He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab, for his mother was his counselor to act wickedly. 4 So he did evil in the sight of the Lord like the house of Ahab, for they were his counselors after the death of his father, to (C)his own destruction.

Ahaziah Allies with Jehoram of Israel

5 He also walked by their counsel, and went with Jehoram the son of Ahab king of Israel to wage war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth-gilead. But the (D)Arameans [d]wounded [e]Joram. 6 So he returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds [f]which they had inflicted on him at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Aram. And [g]Ahaziah, the son of Jehoram king of Judah, went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick.

7 Now (E)the destruction of Ahaziah was from God, in that [h]he went to Joram. For when he arrived, (F)he went out with Jehoram against Jehu the son of Nimshi, (G)whom the Lord had anointed to eliminate the house of Ahab.

Jehu Murders Princes of Judah

8 (H)And it came about, when Jehu was executing judgment on the house of Ahab, that he found the princes of Judah and the sons of Ahaziah’s brothers attending to Ahaziah, and killed them. 9 (I)He also searched for Ahaziah, and they caught him while he was hiding in Samaria; they brought him to Jehu, put him to death, (J)and buried him. For they said, “He is the son of Jehoshaphat, (K)who sought the Lord with all his heart.” So there was no one of the house of Ahaziah to retain the power of the kingdom.

10 (L)Now when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she rose and eliminated all the royal [i]children of the house of Judah. 11 But Jehoshabeath the king’s daughter took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king’s sons who were being put to death, and placed him and his nurse in the bedroom. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest (for she was the sister of Ahaziah), hid him from Athaliah so that she would not put him to death. 12 He kept himself hidden with them in the house of God for six years while Athaliah reigned over the land.

Jehoiada Sets Joash on the Throne of Judah

23 (M)Now in the seventh year, Jehoiada gathered his courage, and took captains of hundreds: Azariah the son of Jeroham, Ishmael the son of Johanan, Azariah the son of Obed, Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri, and they entered into a covenant with him. 2 And they went throughout Judah and gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah, and the heads of the fathers’ households of (N)Israel, and they came to Jerusalem. 3 Then all the assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And [j]Jehoiada said to them, “Behold, the king’s son shall reign, (O)as the Lord has spoken concerning the sons of David. 4 This is the thing which you shall do: a third of you, of the priests and Levites (P)who come in on the Sabbath, shall be gatekeepers, 5 and a third shall be at the king’s house, and a third at the Gate of the Foundation; and all the people shall be in the courtyards of the house of the Lord. 6 But no one is to enter the house of the Lord except the priests and (Q)the ministering Levites; they may enter, for they are holy. And all the people are to keep the command of the Lord. 7 The Levites will surround the king, each man with his weapons in his hand; and whoever enters the house is to be put to death. Therefore be with the king when he comes in and when he goes out.”

8 The Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded. And each one of them took his men who were to come in on the Sabbath, with those who were to go out on the Sabbath, for Jehoiada the priest did not dismiss any of (R)the divisions. 9 Then Jehoiada the priest gave the captains of hundreds the spears and the shields and quivers which had been King David’s, which were in the house of God. 10 He stationed all the people, each man with his weapon in his hand, from the right [k]side of the house to the left [l]side of the house, by the altar and by the house, around the king. 11 Then they brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him, and gave him (S)the testimony and made him king. And Jehoiada and his sons anointed him and said, “(T)Long live the king!”

Athaliah Murdered

12 When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she went into the house of the Lord to the people. 13 She looked, and behold, the king was standing by his pillar at the entrance, and the captains and the [m]trumpeters were beside the king. And all the people of the land rejoiced and blew trumpets, the singers with their musical instruments [n]leading the praise. Then Athaliah tore her clothes and said, “Conspiracy! Conspiracy!” 14 And Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds who were appointed over the army, and said to them, “Bring her out [o]between the ranks, and whoever follows her is to be put to death with the sword.” For the priest said, “You shall not put her to death in the house of the Lord.” 15 So they [p]seized her, and when she arrived at the entrance of (U)the Horse Gate of the king’s house, they (V)put her to death there.

Reforms Carried Out

16 Then (W)Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and all the people and the king, that they would be the Lord’s people. 17 And all the people went to the house of Baal and tore it down, and they broke in pieces his altars and his images, and (X)killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. 18 Moreover, Jehoiada placed the offices of the house of the Lord under the [q]authority of (Y)the Levitical priests, (Z)whom David had assigned over the house of the Lord, to offer the burnt offerings of the Lord, as it is written in the Law of Moses—(AA)with rejoicing and singing according to the [r]order of David. 19 He stationed (AB)the gatekeepers of the house of the Lord, so that no one would enter who was in any way unclean. 20 (AC)He took the captains of hundreds, the nobles, the rulers of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought the king down from the house of the Lord, and went through the upper gate to the king’s house. And they seated the king upon the royal throne. 21 So (AD)all of the people of the land rejoiced and the city was at rest. For they had put Athaliah to death with the sword.

Young Joash Influenced by Jehoiada

24 (AE)Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned for forty years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Zibiah from Beersheba. 2 (AF)Joash did what was right in the sight of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest. 3 Jehoiada took two wives for him, and he fathered sons and daughters.

Faithless Priests

4 Now it came about after this that Joash [s]decided (AG)to restore the house of the Lord. 5 He gathered the priests and Levites and said to them, “Go out to the cities of Judah and collect money from all (AH)Israel to [t]repair the house of your God annually, and you shall [u]do the work quickly.” But the Levites did not act quickly. 6 So the king summoned Jehoiada, the chief priest, and said to him, “Why have you not required the Levites to bring in from Judah and from Jerusalem (AI)the [v]contribution of Moses, the servant of the Lord, and the congregation of Israel, (AJ)for the tent of the testimony?” 7 For (AK)the sons of the wicked Athaliah had broken into the house of God, and even [w]used the holy things of the house of the Lord for the Baals.

Temple Repaired

8 So the king commanded, and (AL)they made a chest and set it outside by the gate of the house of the Lord. 9 (AM)And they made a proclamation in Judah and Jerusalem to bring to the Lord (AN)the [x]contribution commanded by Moses the servant of God on Israel in the wilderness. 10 All the officers and all the people rejoiced, and they brought in their contribution and [y]dropped it into the chest until they had finished. 11 It happened that whenever the chest was brought to the king’s officer by the Levites, and (AO)they saw that the money was substantial, the king’s scribe and the chief priest’s officer would come and empty the chest, and pick it up and return it to its place. They did this daily and collected a large amount of money. 12 The king and Jehoiada gave it to those who did the work of the service of the house of the Lord; and they hired masons and carpenters to restore the house of the Lord, and also workers in iron and bronze to repair the house of the Lord. 13 So the workmen labored, and the repair work progressed in their hands, and they [z]restored the house of God according to its [aa]specifications and strengthened it. 14 When they had finished, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada; and it was made into utensils for the house of the Lord, utensils for the service and the burnt offerings, and pans and utensils of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the Lord continually, all the days of Jehoiada.

15 Now Jehoiada [ab]reached a good old age and he died; he was 130 years old at his death. 16 And they buried him (AP)in the city of David with the kings, because he had done well in (AQ)Israel and [ac]for God and His house.

17 But after the death of Jehoiada the officials of Judah came and bowed down to the king, and the king listened to them. 18 And they abandoned (AR)the house of the Lord, the God of their fathers, and (AS)served the [ad]Asherim and the idols; so (AT)wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this guilt of theirs. 19 Yet (AU)He sent prophets to them to bring them back to the Lord; and they testified against them, but they would not listen.

Joash Murders Son of Jehoiada

20 (AV)Then the Spirit of God [ae]covered Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada the priest like clothing; and he stood above the people and said to them, “This is what God has said, ‘(AW)Why do you break the commandments of the Lord and do not prosper? (AX)Because you have abandoned the Lord, He has also abandoned you.’” 21 So (AY)they conspired against him, and at the command of the king they stoned him [af]to death in the courtyard of the house of the Lord. 22 So Joash the king did not remember the kindness which Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had shown him, but he murdered his son. And as Zechariah died he said, “May (AZ)the Lord see and [ag]avenge!”

Aram Invades and Defeats Judah

23 Now it happened at the turn of the year that (BA)the army of the Arameans came up against Joash; and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, destroyed all the officials of the people from among the people, and sent all their spoils to the king of Damascus. 24 Indeed, the army of the Arameans came with a small number of men; yet (BB)the Lord handed a very great army over to them, (BC)because [ah]Judah and Joash had abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers. So they executed judgment on Joash.

25 (BD)When they left him (for they left him very sick), his own servants conspired against him because of the blood of the [ai]son of Jehoiada the priest, and they murdered him on his bed. So he died, and they buried him in the city of David, but they did not bury him in the tombs of the kings. 26 Now these are the men who conspired against him: Zabad the son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith the Moabitess. 27 As to his sons and the many pronouncements against him and (BE)the [aj]rebuilding of the house of God, behold, they are written in the [ak](BF)treatise of the Book of the Kings. Then his son Amaziah became king in his place.

Amaziah Succeeds Joash in Judah

25 (BG)Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 2 He did what was right in the sight of the Lord, (BH)only not wholeheartedly. 3 Now (BI)it came about, as soon as the kingdom was [al]firmly in his grasp, that he killed his servants who had killed his father the king. 4 However, he did not put their children to death, but did as it is written in the Law in the Book of Moses, which the Lord commanded, saying, “(BJ)Fathers shall not be put to death for sons, nor sons be put to death for fathers; but each shall be put to death for his own sin.”

Amaziah Defeats Edomites

5 Moreover, Amaziah assembled Judah and appointed them according to their fathers’ households under commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds throughout Judah and Benjamin; and he [am]took a census of those (BK)from twenty years old and upward and found them to be (BL)three hundred thousand choice men, able to go to war and handle spear and shield. 6 He also hired a hundred thousand valiant warriors from Israel for [an]a hundred talents of silver. 7 But (BM)a man of God came to him saying, “O king, do not let the army of Israel come with you, for the Lord is not with Israel nor with any of the sons of Ephraim. 8 But if you do go, do it, be strong for the battle; yet God will [ao]bring you down before the enemy, (BN)for God has the power to help and to [ap]bring down.” 9 Amaziah said to the man of God, “But what are we to do about the [aq]hundred talents which I have given to the troops of Israel?” And the man of God answered, “(BO)The Lord has much more to give you than this.” 10 Then Amaziah [ar]dismissed the troops which came to him from Ephraim, to go home; so their anger burned against Judah, and they returned [as]home in fierce anger.

11 Now Amaziah gathered his courage and led his people out, and went to (BP)the Valley of Salt, and struck and killed ten thousand of the sons of Seir. 12 The sons of Judah also captured ten thousand alive and brought them to the top of the cliff, and threw them down from the top of the cliff so that they were all dashed to pieces. 13 But the [at]troops whom Amaziah sent back, those not going with him to battle, raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth-horon, and struck and killed three thousand of them, and plundered a large amount of spoils.

Amaziah Rebuked for Idolatry

14 Now after Amaziah came from slaughtering the Edomites, (BQ)he brought the gods of the sons of Seir and set them up as his gods. Then he bowed down before them and burned incense to them. 15 So the anger of the Lord burned against Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet who said to him, “Why have you sought the gods of the people (BR)who have not saved their own people from your hand?” 16 As he was talking with him, [au]the king said to him, “Have we appointed you to be a royal counselor? Stop! Why should [av]you be put to death?” Then the prophet stopped and said, “I know that God has planned to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.”

Amaziah Defeated by Joash of Israel

17 (BS)Then Amaziah king of Judah took counsel and sent word to Joash the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu, the king of Israel, saying, “Come, let’s face each other.” 18 But Joash the king of Israel sent a reply to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, “(BT)The thorn bush that was in Lebanon sent word to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ But a wild beast that was in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thorn bush. 19 You said, ‘Behold, you have [aw]defeated Edom.’ And (BU)your heart has lifted you up in boasting. Now stay home; why should you provoke trouble so that you, would fall, you and Judah with you?”

20 But Amaziah would not listen, for it was from God, so that He might hand them over to Joash, because they had sought the gods of Edom. 21 So Joash king of Israel went up, and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth-shemesh, which belonged to Judah. 22 And Judah was defeated [ax]by Israel, and they fled, every man to his tent. 23 Then Joash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash the son of (BV)Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem and tore down the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate, [ay]four hundred cubits. 24 He took all the gold and silver and all the utensils which were found in the house of God with (BW)Obed-edom, and the treasures of the king’s house, the hostages too, and returned to Samaria.

25 (BX)And Amaziah, the son of Joash king of Judah, lived fifteen years after the death of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel. 26 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, from the first to the last, behold, are they not written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel? 27 From the time that Amaziah turned away from following the Lord they conspired against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish; but they sent men after him to Lachish, and they killed him there. 28 Then they brought him on horses and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
