Reinado de Abías

(1 R. 15.1-8)

13 A los dieciocho años del rey Jeroboam, reinó Abías sobre Judá, 2 y reinó tres años en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Micaías hija de Uriel de Gabaa.

Y hubo guerra entre Abías y Jeroboam. 3 Entonces Abías ordenó batalla con un ejército de cuatrocientos mil hombres de guerra, valerosos y escogidos; y Jeroboam ordenó batalla contra él con ochocientos mil hombres escogidos, fuertes y valerosos. 4 Y se levantó Abías sobre el monte de Zemaraim, que está en los montes de Efraín, y dijo: Oídme, Jeroboam y todo Israel. 5 ¿No sabéis vosotros que Jehová Dios de Israel dio el reino a David sobre Israel para siempre, a él y a sus hijos, bajo pacto de sal? 6 Pero Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, siervo de Salomón hijo de David, se levantó y rebeló contra su señor. 7 Y se juntaron con él hombres vanos y perversos, y pudieron más que Roboam hijo de Salomón, porque Roboam era joven y pusilánime, y no se defendió de ellos.

8 Y ahora vosotros tratáis de resistir al reino de Jehová en mano de los hijos de David, porque sois muchos, y tenéis con vosotros los becerros de oro que Jeroboam os hizo por dioses. 9 ¿No habéis arrojado vosotros a los sacerdotes de Jehová, a los hijos de Aarón y a los levitas, y os habéis designado sacerdotes a la manera de los pueblos de otras tierras, para que cualquiera venga a consagrarse con un becerro y siete carneros, y así sea sacerdote de los que no son dioses? 10 Mas en cuanto a nosotros, Jehová es nuestro Dios, y no le hemos dejado; y los sacerdotes que ministran delante de Jehová son los hijos de Aarón, y los que están en la obra son levitas, 11 los cuales queman para Jehová los holocaustos cada mañana y cada tarde, y el incienso aromático; y ponen los panes sobre la mesa limpia, y el candelero de oro con sus lámparas para que ardan cada tarde; porque nosotros guardamos la ordenanza de Jehová nuestro Dios, mas vosotros le habéis dejado. 12 Y he aquí Dios está con nosotros por jefe, y sus sacerdotes con las trompetas del júbilo para que suenen contra vosotros. Oh hijos de Israel, no peleéis contra Jehová el Dios de vuestros padres, porque no prosperaréis.

13 Pero Jeroboam hizo tender una emboscada para venir a ellos por la espalda; y estando así delante de ellos, la emboscada estaba a espaldas de Judá. 14 Y cuando miró Judá, he aquí que tenía batalla por delante y a las espaldas; por lo que clamaron a Jehová, y los sacerdotes tocaron las trompetas. 15 Entonces los de Judá gritaron con fuerza; y así que ellos alzaron el grito, Dios desbarató a Jeroboam y a todo Israel delante de Abías y de Judá; 16 y huyeron los hijos de Israel delante de Judá, y Dios los entregó en sus manos. 17 Y Abías y su gente hicieron en ellos una gran matanza, y cayeron heridos de Israel quinientos mil hombres escogidos. 18 Así fueron humillados los hijos de Israel en aquel tiempo, y los hijos de Judá prevalecieron, porque se apoyaban en Jehová el Dios de sus padres. 19 Y siguió Abías a Jeroboam, y le tomó algunas ciudades, a Bet-el con sus aldeas, a Jesana con sus aldeas, y a Efraín con sus aldeas. 20 Y nunca más tuvo Jeroboam poder en los días de Abías; y Jehová lo hirió, y murió. 21 Pero Abías se hizo más poderoso. Tomó catorce mujeres, y engendró veintidós hijos y dieciséis hijas. 22 Los demás hechos de Abías, sus caminos y sus dichos, están escritos en la historia de Iddo profeta.

Reinado de Asa

(1 R. 15.9-12)

14 Durmió Abías con sus padres, y fue sepultado en la ciudad de David; y reinó en su lugar su hijo Asa, en cuyos días tuvo sosiego el país por diez años. 2 E hizo Asa lo bueno y lo recto ante los ojos de Jehová su Dios. 3 Porque quitó los altares del culto extraño, y los lugares altos; quebró las imágenes, y destruyó los símbolos de Asera; 4 y mandó a Judá que buscase a Jehová el Dios de sus padres, y pusiese por obra la ley y sus mandamientos. 5 Quitó asimismo de todas las ciudades de Judá los lugares altos y las imágenes; y estuvo el reino en paz bajo su reinado. 6 Y edificó ciudades fortificadas en Judá, por cuanto había paz en la tierra, y no había guerra contra él en aquellos tiempos; porque Jehová le había dado paz. 7 Dijo, por tanto, a Judá: Edifiquemos estas ciudades, y cerquémoslas de muros con torres, puertas y barras, ya que la tierra es nuestra; porque hemos buscado a Jehová nuestro Dios; le hemos buscado, y él nos ha dado paz por todas partes. Edificaron, pues, y fueron prosperados. 8 Tuvo también Asa ejército que traía escudos y lanzas: de Judá trescientos mil, y de Benjamín doscientos ochenta mil que traían escudos y entesaban arcos, todos hombres diestros.

9 Y salió contra ellos Zera etíope con un ejército de un millón de hombres y trescientos carros; y vino hasta Maresa. 10 Entonces salió Asa contra él, y ordenaron la batalla en el valle de Sefata junto a Maresa. 11 Y clamó Asa a Jehová su Dios, y dijo: ¡Oh Jehová, para ti no hay diferencia alguna en dar ayuda al poderoso o al que no tiene fuerzas! Ayúdanos, oh Jehová Dios nuestro, porque en ti nos apoyamos, y en tu nombre venimos contra este ejército. Oh Jehová, tú eres nuestro Dios; no prevalezca contra ti el hombre. 12 Y Jehová deshizo a los etíopes delante de Asa y delante de Judá; y huyeron los etíopes. 13 Y Asa, y el pueblo que con él estaba, los persiguieron hasta Gerar; y cayeron los etíopes hasta no quedar en ellos aliento, porque fueron deshechos delante de Jehová y de su ejército. Y les tomaron muy grande botín. 14 Atacaron también todas las ciudades alrededor de Gerar, porque el terror de Jehová cayó sobre ellas; y saquearon todas las ciudades, porque había en ellas gran botín. 15 Asimismo atacaron las cabañas de los que tenían ganado, y se llevaron muchas ovejas y camellos, y volvieron a Jerusalén.

Reformas religiosas de Asa

(1 R. 15.13-15)

15 Vino el Espíritu de Dios sobre Azarías hijo de Obed, 2 y salió al encuentro de Asa, y le dijo: Oídme, Asa y todo Judá y Benjamín: Jehová estará con vosotros, si vosotros estuviereis con él; y si le buscareis, será hallado de vosotros; mas si le dejareis, él también os dejará. 3 Muchos días ha estado Israel sin verdadero Dios y sin sacerdote que enseñara, y sin ley; 4 pero cuando en su tribulación se convirtieron a Jehová Dios de Israel, y le buscaron, él fue hallado de ellos. 5 En aquellos tiempos no hubo paz, ni para el que entraba ni para el que salía, sino muchas aflicciones sobre todos los habitantes de las tierras. 6 Y una gente destruía a otra, y una ciudad a otra ciudad; porque Dios los turbó con toda clase de calamidades. 7 Pero esforzaos vosotros, y no desfallezcan vuestras manos, pues hay recompensa para vuestra obra.

8 Cuando oyó Asa las palabras y la profecía del profeta Azarías hijo de Obed, cobró ánimo, y quitó los ídolos abominables de toda la tierra de Judá y de Benjamín, y de las ciudades que él había tomado en la parte montañosa de Efraín; y reparó el altar de Jehová que estaba delante del pórtico de Jehová. 9 Después reunió a todo Judá y Benjamín, y con ellos los forasteros de Efraín, de Manasés y de Simeón; porque muchos de Israel se habían pasado a él, viendo que Jehová su Dios estaba con él. 10 Se reunieron, pues, en Jerusalén, en el mes tercero del año decimoquinto del reinado de Asa. 11 Y en aquel mismo día sacrificaron para Jehová, del botín que habían traído, setecientos bueyes y siete mil ovejas. 12 Entonces prometieron solemnemente que buscarían a Jehová el Dios de sus padres, de todo su corazón y de toda su alma; 13 y que cualquiera que no buscase a Jehová el Dios de Israel, muriese, grande o pequeño, hombre o mujer. 14 Y juraron a Jehová con gran voz y júbilo, al son de trompetas y de bocinas. 15 Todos los de Judá se alegraron de este juramento; porque de todo su corazón lo juraban, y de toda su voluntad lo buscaban, y fue hallado de ellos; y Jehová les dio paz por todas partes.

16 Y aun a Maaca madre del rey Asa, él mismo la depuso de su dignidad, porque había hecho una imagen de Asera; y Asa destruyó la imagen, y la desmenuzó, y la quemó junto al torrente de Cedrón. 17 Con todo esto, los lugares altos no eran quitados de Israel, aunque el corazón de Asa fue perfecto en todos sus días. 18 Y trajo a la casa de Dios lo que su padre había dedicado, y lo que él había consagrado, plata, oro y utensilios. 19 Y no hubo más guerra hasta los treinta y cinco años del reinado de Asa.

Alianza de Asa con Ben-adad

(1 R. 15.16-22)

16 En el año treinta y seis del reinado de Asa, subió Baasa rey de Israel contra Judá, y fortificó a Ramá, para no dejar salir ni entrar a ninguno al rey Asa, rey de Judá. 2 Entonces sacó Asa la plata y el oro de los tesoros de la casa de Jehová y de la casa real, y envió a Ben-adad rey de Siria, que estaba en Damasco, diciendo: 3 Haya alianza entre tú y yo, como la hubo entre tu padre y mi padre; he aquí yo te he enviado plata y oro, para que vengas y deshagas la alianza que tienes con Baasa rey de Israel, a fin de que se retire de mí. 4 Y consintió Ben-adad con el rey Asa, y envió los capitanes de sus ejércitos contra las ciudades de Israel; y conquistaron Ijón, Dan, Abel-maim y las ciudades de aprovisionamiento de Neftalí. 5 Oyendo esto Baasa, cesó de edificar a Ramá, y abandonó su obra. 6 Entonces el rey Asa tomó a todo Judá, y se llevaron de Ramá la piedra y la madera con que Baasa edificaba, y con ellas edificó a Geba y a Mizpa.

7 En aquel tiempo vino el vidente Hanani a Asa rey de Judá, y le dijo: Por cuanto te has apoyado en el rey de Siria, y no te apoyaste en Jehová tu Dios, por eso el ejército del rey de Siria ha escapado de tus manos. 8 Los etíopes y los libios, ¿no eran un ejército numerosísimo, con carros y mucha gente de a caballo? Con todo, porque te apoyaste en Jehová, él los entregó en tus manos. 9 Porque los ojos de Jehová contemplan toda la tierra, para mostrar su poder a favor de los que tienen corazón perfecto para con él. Locamente has hecho en esto; porque de aquí en adelante habrá más guerra contra ti. 10 Entonces se enojó Asa contra el vidente y lo echó en la cárcel, porque se encolerizó grandemente a causa de esto. Y oprimió Asa en aquel tiempo a algunos del pueblo.

Muerte de Asa

(1 R. 15.23-24)

11 Mas he aquí los hechos de Asa, primeros y postreros, están escritos en el libro de los reyes de Judá y de Israel. 12 En el año treinta y nueve de su reinado, Asa enfermó gravemente de los pies, y en su enfermedad no buscó a Jehová, sino a los médicos. 13 Y durmió Asa con sus padres, y murió en el año cuarenta y uno de su reinado. 14 Y lo sepultaron en los sepulcros que él había hecho para sí en la ciudad de David; y lo pusieron en un ataúd, el cual llenaron de perfumes y diversas especias aromáticas, preparadas por expertos perfumistas; e hicieron un gran fuego en su honor.

Reinado de Josafat

17 Reinó en su lugar Josafat su hijo, el cual se hizo fuerte contra Israel. 2 Puso ejércitos en todas las ciudades fortificadas de Judá, y colocó gente de guarnición en tierra de Judá, y asimismo en las ciudades de Efraín que su padre Asa había tomado. 3 Y Jehová estuvo con Josafat, porque anduvo en los primeros caminos de David su padre, y no buscó a los baales, 4 sino que buscó al Dios de su padre, y anduvo en sus mandamientos, y no según las obras de Israel. 5 Jehová, por tanto, confirmó el reino en su mano, y todo Judá dio a Josafat presentes; y tuvo riquezas y gloria en abundancia. 6 Y se animó su corazón en los caminos de Jehová, y quitó los lugares altos y las imágenes de Asera de en medio de Judá.

7 Al tercer año de su reinado envió sus príncipes Ben-hail, Abdías, Zacarías, Natanael y Micaías, para que enseñasen en las ciudades de Judá; 8 y con ellos a los levitas Semaías, Netanías, Zebadías, Asael, Semiramot, Jonatán, Adonías, Tobías y Tobadonías; y con ellos a los sacerdotes Elisama y Joram. 9 Y enseñaron en Judá, teniendo consigo el libro de la ley de Jehová, y recorrieron todas las ciudades de Judá enseñando al pueblo.

10 Y cayó el pavor de Jehová sobre todos los reinos de las tierras que estaban alrededor de Judá, y no osaron hacer guerra contra Josafat. 11 Y traían de los filisteos presentes a Josafat, y tributos de plata. Los árabes también le trajeron ganados, siete mil setecientos carneros y siete mil setecientos machos cabríos. 12 Iba, pues, Josafat engrandeciéndose mucho; y edificó en Judá fortalezas y ciudades de aprovisionamiento. 13 Tuvo muchas provisiones en las ciudades de Judá, y hombres de guerra muy valientes en Jerusalén. 14 Y este es el número de ellos según sus casas paternas: de los jefes de los millares de Judá, el general Adnas, y con él trescientos mil hombres muy esforzados. 15 Después de él, el jefe Johanán, y con él doscientos ochenta mil. 16 Tras este, Amasías hijo de Zicri, el cual se había ofrecido voluntariamente a Jehová, y con él doscientos mil hombres valientes. 17 De Benjamín, Eliada, hombre muy valeroso, y con él doscientos mil armados de arco y escudo. 18 Tras este, Jozabad, y con él ciento ochenta mil dispuestos para la guerra. 19 Estos eran siervos del rey, sin los que el rey había puesto en las ciudades fortificadas en todo Judá.

Abijah Succeeds Rehoboam

13 (A)In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah became king over Judah. 2 He reigned in Jerusalem for three years; and his mother’s name was [a]Micaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah.

(B)Now there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. 3 Abijah began the battle with an army of warriors, four hundred thousand chosen men, while Jeroboam drew up in battle formation against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men who were valiant warriors.

Civil War

4 Then Abijah stood on Mount (C)Zemaraim, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, “Listen to me, Jeroboam and all Israel: 5 Do you not know that (D)the Lord God of Israel gave the rule over Israel forever to David [b]and his sons by (E)a covenant of salt? 6 Yet (F)Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up and rebelled against his [c]master, 7 and worthless men gathered to him, wicked men, who proved too strong for Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, when [d](G)he was young and timid and could not hold his own against them.

8 “So now you intend to assert yourselves against the kingdom of the Lord [e]through the sons of David, [f]being a great multitude and having with you (H)the golden calves which Jeroboam made for you as gods. 9 (I)Have you not driven out the priests of the Lord, the sons of Aaron and the Levites, and made for yourselves priests like the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes (J)to consecrate himself with a bull and seven rams, even he may become a priest of things that are (K)not gods. 10 But as for us, the Lord is our God, and we have not abandoned Him; and the sons of Aaron are ministering to the Lord as priests, and the Levites [g]attend to their work. 11 Every morning and evening (L)they [h]burn to the Lord burnt offerings and fragrant incense, and (M)the showbread is set on the clean table, and the golden lampstand with its lamps is ready to light every evening; for we perform our duty to the Lord our God, but you have abandoned Him. 12 Now behold, God is with us at our head, and (N)His priests with the signal trumpets to sound the war cry against you. Sons of Israel, do not fight against the Lord God of your fathers, for you will not succeed.”

13 But Jeroboam (O)had set an ambush to come from behind, so that Israel was in front of Judah and the ambush was behind them. 14 When Judah turned around, behold, [i]they were attacked both from front and rear; so (P)they cried out to the Lord, and the priests blew the trumpets. 15 Then the men of Judah raised a war cry, and when the men of Judah raised the war cry, God [j](Q)defeated Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. 16 When the sons of Israel fled from Judah, (R)God handed them over to them. 17 Abijah and his people defeated them with a great slaughter, so that five hundred thousand chosen men of Israel fell slain. 18 The sons of Israel were subdued at that time, and the sons of Judah [k]conquered (S)because they trusted in the Lord, the God of their fathers. 19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam and captured from him several cities, Bethel with its villages, Jeshanah with its villages, and [l]Ephron with its villages.

Death of Jeroboam

20 Jeroboam did not again recover strength in the days of Abijah; and the (T)Lord struck him and (U)he died.

21 But Abijah became powerful, and he took fourteen wives for himself, and fathered twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters. 22 Now the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways and his words are written in (V)the [m]treatise of (W)Iddo the prophet.

Asa Succeeds Abijah in Judah

14 [n](X)So Abijah [o]lay down with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David, and his son Asa became king in his place. The land was undisturbed for ten years during his days.

2 [p]And Asa did what was good and right in the sight of the Lord his God, 3 for he removed (Y)the foreign altars and (Z)high places, tore down the memorial stones, cut down the [q](AA)Asherim, 4 and commanded Judah to seek the Lord God of their fathers and to [r]comply with the Law and the commandment. 5 He also removed the high places and the (AB)incense altars from all the cities of Judah. And the kingdom was undisturbed under him. 6 (AC)He built fortified cities in Judah, since the land was undisturbed, and [s]there was no one at war with him during those years, (AD)because the Lord had given him rest. 7 For he said to Judah, “(AE)Let’s build these cities and surround them with walls and towers, gates and bars. The land is still [t]ours because we have sought the Lord our God; we have sought Him, and He has given us rest on every side.” So they built and prospered. 8 Now Asa had an army of (AF)three hundred thousand from Judah, carrying large shields and spears, and 280,000 from Benjamin, carrying shields and wielding bows; all of them were valiant warriors.

9 Now Zerah the Ethiopian (AG)went out against them with an army of a million men and three hundred chariots, and he came to (AH)Mareshah. 10 So Asa went out [u]to meet him, and they drew up in battle formation in the Valley of Zephathah at Mareshah. 11 Then Asa (AI)called to the Lord his God and said, “Lord, there is no one besides You to help in the battle between the powerful and those who have no strength; help us, Lord our God, (AJ)for we trust in You, and in Your name have come against this multitude. Lord, You are our God; do not let man prevail against You.” 12 So (AK)the Lord [v]routed the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah, and the Ethiopians fled. 13 Asa and the people who were with him pursued them as far as (AL)Gerar; and so many Ethiopians fell that [w]they could not recover, for they were shattered before the Lord and before His army. And they carried away a very large amount of plunder. 14 They [x]destroyed all the cities around Gerar, (AM)for the dread of the Lord had fallen on them; and they pillaged all the cities, for there was much plunder in them. 15 They also fatally struck [y]those who owned livestock, and they led away large numbers of sheep and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.

Azariah the Prophet Warns Asa

15 Now (AN)the Spirit of God came on Azariah the son of Oded, 2 and he went out [z]to meet Asa and said to him, “Listen to me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin: (AO)the Lord is with you when you are with Him. And (AP)if you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you abandon Him, He will abandon you. 3 (AQ)For many days Israel was without the true God and without (AR)a teaching priest and without the Law. 4 But (AS)in their distress they turned to the Lord God of Israel, and they sought Him, and He let them find Him. 5 (AT)In those times there was no peace for him who went out or him who came in, because many disturbances [aa]afflicted all the inhabitants of the lands. 6 (AU)Nation was crushed by nation, and city by city, for God troubled them with every kind of distress. 7 But you, (AV)be strong and do not [ab]lose courage, for there is a (AW)reward for your work.”

Asa’s Reforms

8 Now when Asa heard these words and the [ac]prophecy which Azariah the son of Oded the prophet spoke, he took courage and removed the abominable idols from all the land of Judah and Benjamin, and from (AX)the cities which he had captured in the hill country of Ephraim. (AY)He then restored the altar of the Lord which was in front of the porch of the Lord. 9 And he gathered all Judah and Benjamin, and those from Ephraim, Manasseh, and Simeon (AZ)who resided with them, for many defected to him from Israel when they saw that the Lord his God was with him. 10 So they assembled at Jerusalem in the third month of the fifteenth year of Asa’s reign. 11 (BA)They sacrificed to the Lord on that day seven hundred oxen and seven thousand sheep from the spoils they had brought. 12 (BB)They entered into the covenant to seek the Lord God of their fathers with all their heart and soul; 13 and whoever would not seek the Lord God of Israel (BC)was to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman. 14 Moreover, they made an oath to the Lord with a loud voice, with shouting, trumpets, and with horns. 15 All Judah rejoiced concerning the oath, for they had sworn with all their heart and had sought Him [ad]earnestly, and He let them find Him. So (BD)the Lord gave them rest on every side.

16 (BE)He also removed Maacah, the mother of King Asa, from the position of queen mother, because she had made an abominable image [ae]as (BF)an Asherah, and (BG)Asa cut down her abominable image, crushed it, and burned it at the brook Kidron. 17 But the high places were not removed from Israel; nevertheless Asa’s heart was blameless all his days. 18 He brought into the house of God the dedicated things of his father and his own dedicated things: silver, gold, and utensils. 19 And there was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of Asa’s reign.

Asa Wars against Baasha

16 In the thirty-sixth year of Asa’s reign, (BH)Baasha king of Israel came up against Judah and [af]fortified Ramah in order to prevent anyone from going out or coming in to Asa king of Judah. 2 Then Asa brought out silver and gold from the treasuries of the house of the Lord and the king’s house, and sent it to Ben-hadad king of Aram, who lived in Damascus, saying, 3 “A treaty must be made between [ag]you and me, as there was between my father and your father. Behold, I have sent you silver and gold; go, break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so that he will withdraw from me.” 4 And Ben-hadad listened to King Asa, and he sent the commanders of his armies against the cities of Israel, and they [ah]conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel-maim, and all (BI)the [ai]storage cities of Naphtali. 5 When Baasha heard about it, he stopped [aj]fortifying Ramah and put an end to his work. 6 Then King Asa brought all Judah, and they carried away the stones of Ramah and its timber with which Baasha had been building, and with it he [ak]fortified Geba and Mizpah.

Asa Imprisons the Prophet

7 At that time (BJ)Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him, “(BK)Because you have relied on the king of Aram and have not relied on the Lord your God, for that reason the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand. 8 Were not (BL)the Ethiopians and the Lubim (BM)an immense army with very many chariots and horsemen? Yet (BN)because you relied on the Lord, He handed them over to you. 9 For (BO)the eyes of the Lord roam throughout the earth, so that He may strongly support those (BP)whose heart is completely His. You have acted foolishly in this. Indeed, from now on you will have wars.” 10 Then Asa was angry with the seer and put him in [al]prison, for he was enraged at him for this. And Asa mistreated some of the people at the same time.

11 (BQ)Now, the acts of Asa from the first to the last, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel. 12 In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa became diseased in his feet. His disease was severe, yet even in his disease he (BR)did not seek the Lord, but the physicians. 13 So Asa [am]lay down with his fathers, and died in the forty-first year of his reign. 14 They buried him in his own tomb which he had cut out for himself in the city of David, and they laid him in the resting place which he had filled (BS)with spices of various kinds blended by the perfumers’ art; and (BT)they made a very great fire for him.

Jehoshaphat Succeeds Asa

17 His son (BU)Jehoshaphat then became king in his place, and he proved himself strong over Israel. 2 He placed troops in all (BV)the fortified cities of Judah, and placed garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim (BW)which his father Asa had captured.

His Good Reign

3 And the Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he [an]followed the example of his father David’s earlier days and did not seek the Baals, 4 but sought the God of his father, [ao]followed His commandments, (BX)and did not act as Israel did. 5 So the Lord established the kingdom in his [ap]control, and all Judah gave tribute to Jehoshaphat, and (BY)he had great riches and honor. 6 [aq]He took great pride in the ways of the Lord, and again (BZ)removed the high places and the [ar]Asherim from Judah.

7 Then in the third year of his reign he sent his officials, Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah, (CA)to teach in the cities of Judah; 8 and with them (CB)the Levites, Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tobadonijah, the Levites; and with them the priests Elishama and Jehoram. 9 They taught in Judah, having (CC)the Book of the Law of the Lord with them; and they went throughout the cities of Judah and taught among the people.

10 Now (CD)the dread of the Lord was on all the kingdoms of the lands which were around Judah, so that they did not make war against Jehoshaphat. 11 Some of the Philistines (CE)brought gifts and silver as tribute to Jehoshaphat; the Arabians also brought him flocks, 7,700 rams and 7,700 male goats. 12 So Jehoshaphat grew greater and greater, and he built fortresses and storage cities in Judah. 13 He had large supplies in the cities of Judah, and warriors, valiant mighty men, in Jerusalem. 14 This was their muster according to their fathers’ households: of Judah, commanders of thousands, Adnah was the commander, and with him three hundred thousand valiant warriors; 15 and next to him was Johanan the commander, and with him 280,000; 16 and next to him Amasiah the son of Zichri, (CF)who volunteered for the Lord, and with him two hundred thousand valiant warriors; 17 and of Benjamin, Eliada, a valiant warrior, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield; 18 and next to him Jehozabad, and with him 180,000 equipped for war. 19 These are the ones who served the king, apart from (CG)those whom the king put in the fortified cities throughout Judah.
