So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a covenant with them in Hebron before Jehovah: and they anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.

And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spake unto David, saying, [a]Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither; thinking, David cannot come in hither. Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion; the same is the city of David. And David said on that day, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites, let him get up to the watercourse, [b]and smite the lame and the blind, [c]that are hated of David’s soul. Wherefore they say, [d]There are the blind and the lame; he cannot come into the house. And David dwelt in the stronghold, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward. 10 And David waxed greater and greater; for Jehovah, the God of hosts, was with him.

When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant(A) with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed(B) David king over Israel.

David was thirty years old(C) when he became king, and he reigned(D) forty(E) years. In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months,(F) and in Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.

David Conquers Jerusalem(G)(H)

The king and his men marched to Jerusalem(I) to attack the Jebusites,(J) who lived there. The Jebusites said to David, “You will not get in here; even the blind and the lame can ward you off.” They thought, “David cannot get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion(K)—which is the City of David.(L)

On that day David had said, “Anyone who conquers the Jebusites will have to use the water shaft(M) to reach those ‘lame and blind’(N) who are David’s enemies.[a]” That is why they say, “The ‘blind and lame’ will not enter the palace.”

David then took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built up the area around it, from the terraces[b](O) inward. 10 And he became more and more powerful,(P) because the Lord God Almighty(Q) was with him.(R)
