⁵ Then ^(A)Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and to the princes of Judah, who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, “Thus says the Lord, ^(B)‘You abandoned me, so I have abandoned you to the hand of Shishak.’”

⁷ When the Lord saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah: ^(A)“They have humbled themselves. I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance, ^(B)and my wrath shall not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. ⁸ Nevertheless, they shall be servants to him, ^(C)that they may know my service and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.”

¹⁶ Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will bring disaster upon this place and upon its inhabitants, all the words of the book that the king of Judah has read.

¹⁸ But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord, thus shall you say to him, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Regarding the words that you have heard, ^19 (A)because your heart was penitent, and you ^(B)humbled yourself before the Lord, when you heard how I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that they should become ^(C)a desolation and ^(D)a curse, and you ^(E)have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you, declares the Lord. ²⁰ Therefore, behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and ^(F)you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, and your eyes shall not see all the disaster that I will bring upon this place.’” And they brought back word to the king.
