Examples of Disloyalty and Loyalty

15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia(A) has deserted me,(B) including Phygelus and Hermogenes.

16 May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus,(C) because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed(D) of my chains.(E) 17 On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. 18 May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day!(F) You know very well in how many ways he helped me(G) in Ephesus.(H)

The Appeal Renewed

You then, my son,(I) be strong(J) in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say(K) in the presence of many witnesses(L) entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. Join with me in suffering,(M) like a good soldier(N) of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown(O) except by competing according to the rules. The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops.(P) Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.

15 This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

16 The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:

17 But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.

18 The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.

The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.

Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.
