33 Then the king sang this lament for Abner:

“Why should Abner have died
    the way a lawless brute dies?
34 Your hands were not bound,
    your feet were not fettered
As one falls at the hands of the wicked,
    you too have fallen.”

And all the people continued to weep for him.

35 After that, the people tried to persuade David to eat something while it was still day, but David swore: “May God deal with me severely, and even more terribly, if I eat bread or anything else prior to sunset.”

You fell as one falls before the wicked.”

And all the people wept over him again.

35 Then they all came and urged David to eat something while it was still day; but David took an oath, saying, “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely,(C) if I taste bread(D) or anything else before the sun sets!”
