2 Samuel 22:35-51

New International Version

³⁵He trains my hands^(A) for battle;
    my arms can bend a bow^(B) of bronze.
³⁶You make your saving help my shield;^(C)
    your help has made^[a] me great.
³⁷You provide a broad path^(D) for my feet,
    so that my ankles do not give way.

³⁸“I pursued my enemies and crushed them;
    I did not turn back till they were destroyed.
³⁹I crushed^(E) them completely, and they could not rise;
    they fell beneath my feet.
⁴⁰You armed me with strength for battle;
    you humbled my adversaries before me.^(F)
⁴¹You made my enemies turn their backs^(G) in flight,
    and I destroyed my foes.
⁴²They cried for help,^(H) but there was no one to save them—^(I)
    to the Lord, but he did not answer.^(J)
⁴³I beat them as fine as the dust^(K) of the earth;
    I pounded and trampled^(L) them like mud^(M) in the streets.

⁴⁴“You have delivered^(N) me from the attacks of the peoples;
    you have preserved^(O) me as the head of nations.
People^(P) I did not know now serve me,
⁴⁵    foreigners cower^(Q) before me;
    as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.^(R)
⁴⁶They all lose heart;
    they come trembling^[b]^(S) from their strongholds.

⁴⁷“The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock!
    Exalted^(T) be my God, the Rock, my Savior!^(U)
⁴⁸He is the God who avenges^(V) me,^(W)
    who puts the nations under me,
⁴⁹    who sets me free from my enemies.^(X)
You exalted me^(Y) above my foes;
    from a violent man you rescued me.
⁵⁰Therefore I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
    I will sing the praises^(Z) of your name.^(AA)

⁵¹“He gives his king great victories;^(AB)
he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed,^(AC)
to David^(AD) and his descendants forever.”^(AE)

    from the Sovereign Lord comes escape from death.^(D)

²²The Lord says, “I will bring them from Bashan;

Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews

³⁷Even after Jesus had performed so many signs^(A) in their presence, they still would not believe in him. ³⁸This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:

“Lord, who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”^[a]^(B)

³⁹For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:

⁴⁰“He has blinded their eyes
    and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
    nor understand with their hearts,
    nor turn—and I would heal them.”^[b]^(C)

⁴¹Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory^(D) and spoke about him.^(E)

⁴²Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.^(F) But because of the Pharisees^(G) they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;^(H) ⁴³for they loved human praise^(I) more than praise from God.^(J)

⁴⁴Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.^(K) ⁴⁵The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.^(L) ⁴⁶I have come into the world as a light,^(M) so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

⁴⁷“If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.^(N) ⁴⁸There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them^(O) at the last day. ⁴⁹For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me^(P) to say all that I have spoken. ⁵⁰I know that his command leads to eternal life.^(Q) So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”^(R)
