19 Cuando el rey Ezequías lo oyó, rasgó sus vestidos y se cubrió de cilicio, y entró en la casa de Jehová. 2 Y envió a Eliaquim mayordomo, a Sebna escriba y a los ancianos de los sacerdotes, cubiertos de cilicio, al profeta Isaías hijo de Amoz, 3 para que le dijesen: Así ha dicho Ezequías: Este día es día de angustia, de reprensión y de blasfemia; porque los hijos están a punto de nacer, y la que da a luz no tiene fuerzas. 4 Quizá oirá Jehová tu Dios todas las palabras del Rabsaces, a quien el rey de los asirios su señor ha enviado para blasfemar al Dios viviente, y para vituperar con palabras, las cuales Jehová tu Dios ha oído; por tanto, eleva oración por el remanente que aún queda. 5 Vinieron, pues, los siervos del rey Ezequías a Isaías. 6 E Isaías les respondió: Así diréis a vuestro señor: Así ha dicho Jehová: No temas por las palabras que has oído, con las cuales me han blasfemado los siervos del rey de Asiria. 7 He aquí pondré yo en él un espíritu, y oirá rumor, y volverá a su tierra; y haré que en su tierra caiga a espada.
8 Y regresando el Rabsaces, halló al rey de Asiria combatiendo contra Libna; porque oyó que se había ido de Laquis. 9 Y oyó decir que Tirhaca rey de Etiopía había salido para hacerle guerra. Entonces volvió él y envió embajadores a Ezequías, diciendo: 10 Así diréis a Ezequías rey de Judá: No te engañe tu Dios en quien tú confías, para decir: Jerusalén no será entregada en mano del rey de Asiria. 11 He aquí tú has oído lo que han hecho los reyes de Asiria a todas las tierras, destruyéndolas; ¿y escaparás tú? 12 ¿Acaso libraron sus dioses a las naciones que mis padres destruyeron, esto es, Gozán, Harán, Resef, y los hijos de Edén que estaban en Telasar? 13 ¿Dónde está el rey de Hamat, el rey de Arfad, y el rey de la ciudad de Sefarvaim, de Hena y de Iva?
14 Y tomó Ezequías las cartas de mano de los embajadores; y después que las hubo leído, subió a la casa de Jehová, y las extendió Ezequías delante de Jehová. 15 Y oró Ezequías delante de Jehová, diciendo: Jehová Dios de Israel, que moras entre los querubines,(A) solo tú eres Dios de todos los reinos de la tierra; tú hiciste el cielo y la tierra. 16 Inclina, oh Jehová, tu oído, y oye; abre, oh Jehová, tus ojos, y mira; y oye las palabras de Senaquerib, que ha enviado a blasfemar al Dios viviente. 17 Es verdad, oh Jehová, que los reyes de Asiria han destruido las naciones y sus tierras; 18 y que echaron al fuego a sus dioses, por cuanto ellos no eran dioses, sino obra de manos de hombres, madera o piedra, y por eso los destruyeron. 19 Ahora, pues, oh Jehová Dios nuestro, sálvanos, te ruego, de su mano, para que sepan todos los reinos de la tierra que solo tú, Jehová, eres Dios.

Isaiah Encourages Hezekiah
19 (A)Now when King Hezekiah heard the report, he (B)tore his clothes, (C)covered himself with sackcloth, and entered the house of the Lord. 2 Then he sent Eliakim, who was in charge of the household, with Shebna the scribe and the elders of the priests, (D)covered with sackcloth, to (E)Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz. 3 And they said to him, “This is what Hezekiah says: ‘This day is a day of distress, rebuke, and humiliation; for children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to deliver them. 4 (F)Perhaps the Lord your God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent (G)to taunt the living God, and will avenge the words which the Lord your God has heard. Therefore, offer a prayer for (H)the remnant that is [a]left.’” 5 So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah. 6 And Isaiah said to them, “This is what you shall say to your master: ‘The Lord says this: “Do not be fearful because of the words that you have heard, with which the (I)servants of the king of Assyria (J)have blasphemed Me. 7 Behold, I am going to put a spirit in him so that (K)he will hear news and return to his own land. And (L)I will make him fall by the sword in his own land.”’”
Sennacherib Defies God
8 Then Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria fighting against (M)Libnah, for he had heard that the king had left (N)Lachish. 9 When he heard them say about Tirhakah king of [b]Cush, “Behold, he has come out to fight you,” he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying, 10 “This is what you shall say to Hezekiah king of [c]Judah: ‘Do not (O)let your God in whom you trust deceive you by saying, “(P)Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.” 11 Behold, you yourself have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the lands, destroying them completely. So will you be saved? 12 (Q)Did the gods of the nations which my fathers destroyed save them: (R)Gozan, (S)Haran, Rezeph, and (T)the sons of Eden who were in Telassar? 13 (U)Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, and of Hena and Ivvah?’”
Hezekiah’s Prayer
14 Then (V)Hezekiah took the [d]letter from the hand of the messengers and read it, and he went up to the house of the Lord and [e]spread it out before the Lord. 15 Hezekiah prayed before the Lord and said, “Lord, God of Israel, [f](W)enthroned above the cherubim, (X)You are the God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 16 (Y)Incline Your ear, Lord, and hear; (Z)open Your eyes, Lord, and see; and listen to the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent (AA)to taunt the living God. 17 It is true, Lord; the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands, 18 and have [g]hurled their gods into the fire; (AB)for they were not gods, but only the work of human hands, wood and stone. So they have destroyed them. 19 But now, Lord our God, please, save us from his hand, (AC)so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, (AD)Lord, are God.”

Jerusalem’s Deliverance Foretold(A)
19 When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore(B) his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the Lord. 2 He sent Eliakim(C) the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary and the leading priests,(D) all wearing sackcloth,(E) to the prophet Isaiah(F) son of Amoz. 3 They told him, “This is what Hezekiah says: This day is a day of distress and rebuke and disgrace, as when children come to the moment(G) of birth and there is no strength to deliver them. 4 It may be that the Lord your God will hear all the words of the field commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule(H) the living God, and that he will rebuke(I) him for the words the Lord your God has heard. Therefore pray for the remnant(J) that still survives.”
5 When King Hezekiah’s officials came to Isaiah, 6 Isaiah said to them, “Tell your master, ‘This is what the Lord says: Do not be afraid(K) of what you have heard—those words with which the underlings of the king of Assyria have blasphemed(L) me. 7 Listen! When he hears a certain report,(M) I will make him want to return to his own country, and there I will have him cut down with the sword.(N)’”
8 When the field commander heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish,(O) he withdrew and found the king fighting against Libnah.(P)
9 Now Sennacherib received a report that Tirhakah, the king of Cush,[a] was marching out to fight against him. So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah with this word: 10 “Say to Hezekiah king of Judah: Do not let the god you depend(Q) on deceive(R) you when he says, ‘Jerusalem will not be given into the hands of the king of Assyria.’ 11 Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries, destroying them completely. And will you be delivered? 12 Did the gods of the nations that were destroyed by my predecessors deliver(S) them—the gods of Gozan,(T) Harran,(U) Rezeph and the people of Eden who were in Tel Assar? 13 Where is the king of Hamath or the king of Arpad? Where are the kings of Lair, Sepharvaim, Hena and Ivvah?”(V)
Hezekiah’s Prayer(W)
14 Hezekiah received the letter(X) from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord. 15 And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: “Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim,(Y) you alone(Z) are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 16 Give ear,(AA) Lord, and hear;(AB) open your eyes,(AC) Lord, and see; listen to the words Sennacherib has sent to ridicule the living God.
17 “It is true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste these nations and their lands. 18 They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods(AD) but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands.(AE) 19 Now, Lord our God, deliver(AF) us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms(AG) of the earth may know(AH) that you alone, Lord, are God.”

So they have (AB)destroyed them. 20 But now Lord, our God, (AC)save us from his hand, so that (AD)all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, [g]Lord, are God.”

18 “It is true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste all these peoples and their lands.(AV) 19 They have thrown their gods into the fire(AW) and destroyed them,(AX) for they were not gods(AY) but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands.(AZ) 20 Now, Lord our God, deliver(BA) us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth(BB) may know that you, Lord, are the only God.[b](BC)”

9 Después de esto, Senaquerib rey de los asirios, mientras sitiaba a Laquis con todas sus fuerzas, envió sus siervos a Jerusalén para decir a Ezequías rey de Judá, y a todos los de Judá que estaban en Jerusalén: 10 Así ha dicho Senaquerib rey de los asirios: ¿En quién confiáis vosotros, al resistir el sitio en Jerusalén? 11 ¿No os engaña Ezequías para entregaros a muerte, a hambre y a sed, al decir: Jehová nuestro Dios nos librará de la mano del rey de Asiria? 12 ¿No es Ezequías el mismo que ha quitado sus lugares altos y sus altares, y ha dicho a Judá y a Jerusalén: Delante de este solo altar adoraréis, y sobre él quemaréis incienso? 13 ¿No habéis sabido lo que yo y mis padres hemos hecho a todos los pueblos de la tierra? ¿Pudieron los dioses de las naciones de esas tierras librar su tierra de mi mano? 14 ¿Qué dios hubo de entre todos los dioses de aquellas naciones que destruyeron mis padres, que pudiese salvar a su pueblo de mis manos? ¿Cómo podrá vuestro Dios libraros de mi mano? 15 Ahora, pues, no os engañe Ezequías, ni os persuada de ese modo, ni le creáis; que si ningún dios de todas aquellas naciones y reinos pudo librar a su pueblo de mis manos, y de las manos de mis padres, ¿cuánto menos vuestro Dios os podrá librar de mi mano?
16 Y otras cosas más hablaron sus siervos contra Jehová Dios, y contra su siervo Ezequías. 17 Además de esto escribió cartas en que blasfemaba contra Jehová el Dios de Israel, y hablaba contra él, diciendo: Como los dioses de las naciones de los países no pudieron librar a su pueblo de mis manos, tampoco el Dios de Ezequías librará al suyo de mis manos. 18 Y clamaron a gran voz en judaico al pueblo de Jerusalén que estaba sobre los muros, para espantarles y atemorizarles, a fin de poder tomar la ciudad. 19 Y hablaron contra el Dios de Jerusalén, como contra los dioses de los pueblos de la tierra, que son obra de manos de hombres.

Sennacherib Undermines Hezekiah
9 After this (A)Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem while he was [a]besieging Lachish with all his forces with him, against Hezekiah king of Judah and against all of Judah who were in Jerusalem, saying, 10 “This is what Sennacherib king of Assyria says: ‘On what are you trusting that you are staying in Jerusalem under siege? 11 Is Hezekiah not misleading you to give yourselves over to die by hunger and by thirst, saying, “The Lord our God will save us from the [b]hand of the king of Assyria”? 12 (B)Is it not the same Hezekiah who removed His high places and His altars, and said to Judah and [c]Jerusalem, “You shall worship before one altar, and on it you shall [d]burn incense”? 13 Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? (C)Were the gods of the nations of those lands at all able to save their land from my hand? 14 (D)Who was there among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed who could save his people from my hand, that your God would be able to save you from my hand? 15 Now then, do not let Hezekiah deceive you or mislead you like this, and do not believe him, for (E)no god of any nation or kingdom was able to save his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God save you from my hand?’”
16 His servants spoke further against the Lord God and against His servant Hezekiah. 17 He also wrote letters to insult the Lord God of Israel, and to speak against Him, saying, “(F)As the gods of the nations of the lands [e]have not saved their people from my hand, so the God of Hezekiah will not save His people from my hand.” 18 (G)They called this out with a loud voice in the language of Judah to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten and terrify them, so that they might take the city. 19 They spoke [f]of the God of Jerusalem as they did against (H)the gods of the peoples of the earth, the work of human hands.

10 “This is what Sennacherib king of Assyria says: On what are you basing your confidence,(B) that you remain in Jerusalem under siege? 11 When Hezekiah says, ‘The Lord our God will save us from the hand of the king of Assyria,’ he is misleading(C) you, to let you die of hunger and thirst. 12 Did not Hezekiah himself remove this god’s high places and altars, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You must worship before one altar(D) and burn sacrifices on it’?
13 “Do you not know what I and my predecessors have done to all the peoples of the other lands? Were the gods of those nations ever able to deliver their land from my hand?(E) 14 Who of all the gods of these nations that my predecessors destroyed has been able to save his people from me? How then can your god deliver you from my hand? 15 Now do not let Hezekiah deceive(F) you and mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver(G) his people from my hand or the hand of my predecessors.(H) How much less will your god deliver you from my hand!”
16 Sennacherib’s officers spoke further against the Lord God and against his servant Hezekiah. 17 The king also wrote letters(I) ridiculing(J) the Lord, the God of Israel, and saying this against him: “Just as the gods(K) of the peoples of the other lands did not rescue their people from my hand, so the god of Hezekiah will not rescue his people from my hand.” 18 Then they called out in Hebrew to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to terrify them and make them afraid in order to capture the city. 19 They spoke about the God of Jerusalem as they did about the gods of the other peoples of the world—the work of human hands.(L)

‘She, (B)the virgin daughter of Zion, has shown contempt for you and mocked you;
She, the daughter of Jerusalem, (C)has shaken her head behind you!
22 Whom have you (D)taunted and (E)blasphemed?
And against whom have you raised your voice,
And [a]haughtily raised your eyes?
Against the (F)Holy One of Israel!
23 (G)Through your messengers you have taunted the Lord,
And you have said, “With my many chariots
I went up to the heights of the mountains,
To the remotest parts of Lebanon;
And I cut down its tall cedars and its choicest junipers.
And I entered its farthest resting place, its (H)thickest forest.
24 I dug wells and drank foreign waters,
And with the soles of my feet I (I)dried up
All the streams of Egypt.”
25 ‘(J)Have you not heard?
Long ago I did it;
From ancient times I planned it.
(K)Now I have brought it about,
That you would turn fortified cities into ruined heaps.
26 Therefore their inhabitants were [b]powerless,
They were shattered and put to shame.
They were (L)like the vegetation of the field and the green grass,
Like grass on the housetops that is scorched before it has grown.
27 But (M)I know your sitting down,
Your going out, your coming in,
And your raging against Me.
28 Because of your raging against Me,
And because your complacency has come up to My ears,
I (N)will put My hook in your nose,
And My bridle in your lips,
And (O)I will turn you back by the way by which you came.
29 ‘Then this shall be (P)the sign for you: [c]you will eat this year what grows of itself, in the second year what grows by itself, and in the third year sow, harvest, plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 30 (Q)The survivors that are left of the house of Judah will again take root downward and bear fruit upward. 31 For out of Jerusalem will go a remnant, and survivors (R)out of Mount Zion. (S)The zeal of [d]the Lord will perform this.
32 ‘Therefore this is what the Lord says about the king of Assyria: “(T)He will not come to this city nor shoot an arrow there; and he will not come before it with a shield nor heap up an assault ramp against it. 33 (U)By the way that he came, by [e]the same he will return, and he shall not come to this city,”’ declares the Lord. 34 ‘(V)For I will protect this city to save it for My own sake, and (W)for My servant David’s sake.’”
35 (X)Then it happened that night that the angel of the Lord went out and struck 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians; and when the rest got up early in the morning, behold, all of [f]the 185,000 were [g]dead. 36 So (Y)Sennacherib the king of Assyria departed and [h]returned home, and lived at (Z)Nineveh. 37 Then it came about, as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, that [i](AA)Adrammelech and Sharezer killed him with the sword; and they escaped to (AB)the land of Ararat. 22 Who is it you have ridiculed and blasphemed?(I)
Against whom have you raised your voice
and lifted your eyes in pride?
Against the Holy One(J) of Israel!

I have ascended the heights of the mountains,
the utmost heights of Lebanon.
I have cut down(M) its tallest cedars,

I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.”

26 Their people, drained of power,(Q)
are dismayed(R) and put to shame.

and how you rage against me.

and because your insolence has reached my ears,

or shoot an arrow here.
He will not come before it with shield
or build a siege ramp against it.
33 By the way that he came he will return;(AG)
he will not enter this city,
declares the Lord.
34 I will defend(AH) this city and save it,
for my sake and for the sake of David(AI) my servant.’”
35 That night the angel of the Lord(AJ) went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies!(AK) 36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew.(AL) He returned to Nineveh(AM) and stayed there.
37 One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisrok, his sons Adrammelek(AN) and Sharezer killed him with the sword,(AO) and they escaped to the land of Ararat.(AP) And Esarhaddon(AQ) his son succeeded him as king.

Hezekiah’s Prayer Is Answered
20 But King Hezekiah and Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, prayed about this and called out to heaven for help. 21 And the Lord sent an angel who destroyed every warrior, commander, and officer in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned [a]in shame to his own land. And when he had entered the temple of his god, some of his own sons killed him there with the sword. 22 So the Lord (A)saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria and from the hand of all others, and [b]guided them on every side. 23 And (B)many were bringing gifts to the Lord at Jerusalem and valuable presents to Hezekiah king of Judah; so thereafter (C)he rose in the sight of all nations.
