¹⁸ Your holy people took possession for a little while,
    but now our adversaries have trampled down your sanctuary.^(A)

⁸ The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel,
    shall be destroyed.
Thorn and thistle shall grow up
    on their altars.
They shall say to the mountains, “Cover us,”
    and to the hills, “Fall on us.”^(A)

⁵ All this is for the transgression of Jacob
    and for the sins of the house of Israel.
What is the transgression of Jacob?
    Is it not Samaria?
And what is the high place^[a] of Judah?
    Is it not Jerusalem?^(A)
