Ahaziah Reigns in Judah

25 (A)In the (B)twelfth year of Joram the son of Ahab, king of Israel, Ahaziah the son of Jehoram, king of Judah, began to reign. 26 Ahaziah was (C)twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Athaliah; she was (D)a granddaughter of Omri king of Israel. 27 He also walked in the way of the house of Ahab and did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, as the house of Ahab had done, for he was son-in-law to the house of Ahab.

28 He went with Joram the son of Ahab to make war against (E)Hazael king of Syria at (F)Ramoth-gilead, and the Syrians wounded Joram. 29 (G)And King Joram returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds that the Syrians had given him at (H)Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria. And (I)Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick.

Jehu Anointed King of Israel

Then Elisha the prophet called one of (J)the sons of the prophets and said to him, (K)“Tie up your garments, and take this (L)flask of oil in your hand, and go to (M)Ramoth-gilead. And when you arrive, look there for Jehu (N)the son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nimshi. And go in and have him rise from among (O)his fellows, and lead him to an inner chamber. Then take the flask of oil and pour it on his head and say, ‘Thus says the Lord, (P)I anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and flee; do not linger.”

So the young man, the servant of the prophet, went to Ramoth-gilead. And when he came, behold, the commanders of the army were in council. And he said, “I have a word for you, O commander.” And Jehu said, “To which of us all?” And he said, “To you, O commander.” So he arose and went into the house. And the young man poured the oil on his head, saying to him, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, (Q)I anoint you king over the people of the Lord, over Israel. And you shall strike down the house of Ahab your master, so that I may avenge (R)on Jezebel the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord. For the whole house of Ahab shall perish, (S)and I will cut off from Ahab (T)every male, (U)bond or free, in Israel. And I will make the house of Ahab like (V)the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like (W)the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah. 10 (X)And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the territory of Jezreel, and none shall bury her.” Then he opened the door and fled.

11 When Jehu came out to the servants of his master, they said to him, (Y)“Is all well? Why did (Z)this mad fellow come to you?” And he said to them, “You know the fellow and his talk.” 12 And they said, “That is not true; tell us now.” And he said, “Thus and so he spoke to me, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord, I anoint you king over Israel.’” 13 Then in haste (AA)every man of them took his garment and put it under him on the bare[a] steps, and they blew the trumpet and proclaimed, (AB)“Jehu is king.”

Ahaziah King of Judah(A)

25 In the twelfth(B) year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign. 26 Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem one year. His mother’s name was Athaliah,(C) a granddaughter of Omri(D) king of Israel. 27 He followed the ways of the house of Ahab(E) and did evil(F) in the eyes of the Lord, as the house of Ahab had done, for he was related by marriage to Ahab’s family.

28 Ahaziah went with Joram son of Ahab to war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth Gilead.(G) The Arameans wounded Joram; 29 so King Joram returned to Jezreel(H) to recover from the wounds the Arameans had inflicted on him at Ramoth[a] in his battle with Hazael(I) king of Aram.

Then Ahaziah(J) son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to Jezreel to see Joram son of Ahab, because he had been wounded.

Jehu Anointed King of Israel

The prophet Elisha summoned a man from the company(K) of the prophets and said to him, “Tuck your cloak into your belt,(L) take this flask of olive oil(M) with you and go to Ramoth Gilead.(N) When you get there, look for Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Go to him, get him away from his companions and take him into an inner room. Then take the flask and pour the oil(O) on his head and declare, ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and run; don’t delay!”

So the young prophet went to Ramoth Gilead. When he arrived, he found the army officers sitting together. “I have a message for you, commander,” he said.

“For which of us?” asked Jehu.

“For you, commander,” he replied.

Jehu got up and went into the house. Then the prophet poured the oil(P) on Jehu’s head and declared, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anoint you king over the Lord’s people Israel. You are to destroy the house of Ahab your master, and I will avenge(Q) the blood of my servants(R) the prophets and the blood of all the Lord’s servants shed by Jezebel.(S) The whole house(T) of Ahab will perish. I will cut off from Ahab every last male(U) in Israel—slave or free.[b] I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam(V) son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha(W) son of Ahijah. 10 As for Jezebel, dogs(X) will devour her on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and no one will bury her.’” Then he opened the door and ran.

11 When Jehu went out to his fellow officers, one of them asked him, “Is everything all right? Why did this maniac(Y) come to you?”

“You know the man and the sort of things he says,” Jehu replied.

12 “That’s not true!” they said. “Tell us.”

Jehu said, “Here is what he told me: ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.’”

13 They quickly took their cloaks and spread(Z) them under him on the bare steps. Then they blew the trumpet(AA) and shouted, “Jehu is king!”
