Walk According to His Commandments

(A)The elder to the (B)chosen (C)lady and her children, whom I (D)love in truth; and not only I, but also all who (E)know the truth, (F)because of the truth which remains (G)in us and will be (H)with us forever: (I)Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

(J)I was overjoyed to find some of your children walking in truth, just as we have received a commandment to do from the Father. Now I ask you, lady, (K)not as though I were writing to you a new commandment, but the one which we have had (L)from the beginning, that we (M)love one another. And (N)this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, (O)just as you have heard (P)from the beginning, that you are to walk in it.

For (Q)many deceivers have (R)gone out into the world, those who (S)do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is (T)the deceiver and the (U)antichrist. (V)Watch yourselves, (W)that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward. [a]Anyone who [b]goes too far and (X)does not remain in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who remains in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, (Y)do not receive him into your house, and do not [c]give him a greeting; 11 for the one who [d]gives him a greeting [e](Z)participates in his evil deeds.

12 (AA)Though I have many things to write to you, I do not want to do so with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak [f]face to face, so that [g]your (AB)joy may be made complete.

13 The children of your (AC)chosen sister greet you.

The elder,(A)

To the lady chosen by God(B) and to her children, whom I love in the truth(C)—and not I only, but also all who know the truth(D) because of the truth,(E) which lives in us(F) and will be with us forever:

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ,(G) the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love.

It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth,(H) just as the Father commanded us. And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning.(I) I ask that we love one another. And this is love:(J) that we walk in obedience to his commands.(K) As you have heard from the beginning,(L) his command is that you walk in love.

I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ(M) as coming in the flesh,(N) have gone out into the world.(O) Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.(P) Watch out that you do not lose what we[a] have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.(Q) Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ(R) does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.(S) 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them.(T) 11 Anyone who welcomes them shares(U) in their wicked work.

12 I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face,(V) so that our joy may be complete.(W)

13 The children of your sister, who is chosen by God,(X) send their greetings.

A Good Report

(A)The elder to the beloved (B)Gaius, whom I (C)love in truth.

Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers. For I (D)was overjoyed when (E)brothers came and testified to your truth, that is, how you (F)are walking in truth. I have no greater joy than [a]this, to hear of (G)my children (H)walking in the truth.

Beloved, you are acting faithfully in whatever you accomplish for the (I)brothers and sisters, and [b]especially when they are (J)strangers; and they have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to [c](K)send them on their way in a manner (L)worthy of God. For they went out for the sake of (M)the Name, (N)accepting nothing from the Gentiles. Therefore we ought to [d]support such people, so that we may [e]prove to be fellow workers [f]with the truth.

I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to (O)be first among them, does not accept [g]what we say. 10 For this reason, (P)if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with malicious words; and not satisfied with this, he himself does not (Q)receive the (R)brothers either, and he forbids those who want to do so and (S)puts them out of the church.

11 Beloved, (T)do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. (U)The one who does what is good is of God; (V)the one who does what is evil has not seen God. 12 Demetrius (W)has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself; and we testify too, and (X)you know that our testimony is true.

13 (Y)I had many things to write to you, but I do not want to write to you with pen and ink; 14 but I hope to see you shortly, and we will speak [h]face to face.

15 (Z)Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends (AA)by name.

The elder,(A)

To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.

Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. It gave me great joy when some believers(B) came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it.(C) I have no greater joy than to hear that my children(D) are walking in the truth.(E)

Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers and sisters,[a](F) even though they are strangers to you.(G) They have told the church about your love. Please send them on their way(H) in a manner that honors(I) God. It was for the sake of the Name(J) that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans.(K) We ought therefore to show hospitality to such people so that we may work together for the truth.

I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will not welcome us. 10 So when I come,(L) I will call attention to what he is doing, spreading malicious nonsense about us. Not satisfied with that, he even refuses to welcome other believers.(M) He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.(N)

11 Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good.(O) Anyone who does what is good is from God.(P) Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.(Q) 12 Demetrius is well spoken of by everyone(R)—and even by the truth itself. We also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true.(S)

13 I have much to write you, but I do not want to do so with pen and ink. 14 I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.(T)

15 Peace to you.(U) The friends here send their greetings. Greet the friends there by name.(V)

The Warnings of History to the Ungodly

[a](A)Jude, a (B)bond-servant of Jesus Christ and brother of [b]James,

To (C)those who are the called, beloved in God the Father, and (D)kept for Jesus Christ: (E)May mercy, peace, and love (F)be multiplied to you.

(G)Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our (H)common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you (I)contend earnestly for (J)the faith that was once for all time (K)handed down to (L)the [c]saints. For certain people have (M)crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand [d](N)marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn (O)the grace of our God into (P)indecent behavior and (Q)deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Now I want to (R)remind you, though (S)you know everything once and for all, that [e]the Lord, (T)after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, [f]subsequently destroyed those who did not believe. And (U)angels who did not keep their own domain but abandoned their proper dwelling place, these He has (V)kept in eternal restraints under darkness for the judgment of the great day, just as (W)Sodom and Gomorrah and the (X)cities around them, since they in the same way as these angels indulged in sexual perversion and (Y)went after [g]strange flesh, are exhibited as an [h](Z)example in undergoing the (AA)punishment of eternal fire.

Yet in the same way these people also, dreaming, (AB)defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak abusively of angelic [i]majesties. But (AC)Michael (AD)the archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about (AE)the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him an abusive judgment, but said, “(AF)The Lord rebuke you!” 10 But (AG)these people disparage all the things that they do not understand; and (AH)all the things that they know by instinct, (AI)like unreasoning animals, by these things they are destroyed. 11 Woe to them! For they have gone (AJ)the way of Cain, and for pay [j]they have given themselves up to (AK)the error of Balaam, and (AL)perished in the rebellion of Korah. 12 These are the ones who are [k]hidden reefs (AM)in your love feasts when they feast with you (AN)without fear, like shepherds caring only for themselves; (AO)clouds without water, (AP)carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, [l]doubly dead, (AQ)uprooted; 13 (AR)wild waves of the sea, churning up (AS)their own shameful deeds like dirty foam; wandering stars, (AT)for whom the [m]gloom of darkness has been reserved forever.

14 It was also about these people that (AU)Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, “(AV)Behold, the Lord has come with [n]many thousands of His holy ones, 15 (AW)to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which (AX)ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.” 16 These are (AY)grumblers, finding fault, (AZ)following after their own lusts; [o]they speak (BA)arrogantly, flattering people (BB)for the sake of gaining an advantage.

Keep Yourselves in the Love of God

17 But you, (BC)beloved, (BD)ought to remember the words that were spoken beforehand by (BE)the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, 18 that they were saying to you, “(BF)In the last time there will be mockers, (BG)following after their own ungodly lusts.” 19 These are the ones who cause divisions, [p](BH)worldly-minded, [q]devoid of the Spirit. 20 But you, (BI)beloved, (BJ)building yourselves up on your most holy (BK)faith, (BL)praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, (BM)looking forward to the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on some, who are doubting; 23 save others, (BN)snatching them out of the fire; and on some have mercy with fear, (BO)hating even the garment polluted by the flesh.

24 (BP)Now to Him who is able to protect you from stumbling, and to (BQ)make you stand in the presence of His glory, blameless with (BR)great joy, 25 to the (BS)only (BT)God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, (BU)be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority (BV)before all time and now and [r]forever. Amen.

Jude,(A) a servant of Jesus Christ(B) and a brother of James,

Mercy, peace(E) and love be yours in abundance.(F)

The Sin and Doom of Ungodly People

Dear friends,(G) although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share,(H) I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend(I) for the faith(J) that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.(K) For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about[b] long ago have secretly slipped in among you.(L) They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.(M)

Though you already know all this,(N) I want to remind you(O) that the Lord[c] at one time delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe.(P) And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.(Q) In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah(R) and the surrounding towns(S) gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.(T)

In the very same way, on the strength of their dreams these ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and heap abuse on celestial beings.(U) But even the archangel(V) Michael,(W) when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses,(X) did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”[d](Y) 10 Yet these people slander whatever they do not understand, and the very things they do understand by instinct—as irrational animals do—will destroy them.(Z)

11 Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain;(AA) they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error;(AB) they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion.(AC)

12 These people are blemishes at your love feasts,(AD) eating with you without the slightest qualm—shepherds who feed only themselves.(AE) They are clouds without rain,(AF) blown along by the wind;(AG) autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted(AH)—twice dead. 13 They are wild waves of the sea,(AI) foaming up their shame;(AJ) wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.(AK)

14 Enoch,(AL) the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: “See, the Lord is coming(AM) with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones(AN) 15 to judge(AO) everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”[e](AP) 16 These people are grumblers(AQ) and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires;(AR) they boast(AS) about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.

A Call to Persevere

17 But, dear friends, remember what the apostles(AT) of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold.(AU) 18 They said to you, “In the last times(AV) there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.”(AW) 19 These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.(AX)

20 But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up(AY) in your most holy faith(AZ) and praying in the Holy Spirit,(BA) 21 keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait(BB) for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.(BC)

22 Be merciful to those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them from the fire;(BD) to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.[f](BE)

Doxology

24 To him who is able(BF) to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence(BG) without fault(BH) and with great joy— 25 to the only God(BI) our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore!(BJ) Amen.(BK)

The Revelation of Jesus Christ

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which (A)God gave Him to (B)show to His bond-servants, (C)the things which must soon take place; and He sent and [a]communicated it (D)by His angel to His bond-servant (E)John, who testified to (F)the word of God and to (G)the testimony of Jesus Christ, everything that he saw. Message to the Seven Churches

(J)John to (K)the seven churches that are in (L)Asia: (M)Grace to you and peace from (N)Him who is, and who was, and who [c]is to come, and from (O)the [d]seven spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, (P)the faithful witness, the (Q)firstborn of the dead, and the (R)ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who (S)loves us and released us from our sins by His blood— and He made us into a (T)kingdom, (U)priests to [e](V)His God and Father—(W)to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. (X)Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and (Y)every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will (Z)mourn over Him. [f]So it is to be. Amen.

“I am (AA)the Alpha and the Omega,” says the (AB)Lord God, (AC)who is and who was and who [g]is to come, the Almighty.”

The Patmos Vision

(AD)I, John, your (AE)brother and (AF)fellow participant in the tribulation and (AG)kingdom and [h](AH)perseverance in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos (AI)because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 I was (AJ)in the [i]Spirit on (AK)the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice (AL)like the sound of a trumpet, 11 saying, “(AM)Write [j]on a scroll what you see, and send it to the (AN)seven churches: to (AO)Ephesus, (AP)Smyrna, (AQ)Pergamum, (AR)Thyatira, (AS)Sardis, (AT)Philadelphia, and (AU)Laodicea.”

12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And after turning I saw (AV)seven golden lampstands; 13 and (AW)in the middle of the lampstands I saw one (AX)like [k]a son of man, (AY)clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and (AZ)wrapped around the chest with a golden sash. 14 His head and His (BA)hair were white like white wool, like snow; and (BB)His eyes were like a flame of fire. 15 His (BC)feet were like [l]burnished bronze when it has been heated to a glow in a furnace, and His (BD)voice was like the sound of many waters. 16 In His right hand He held (BE)seven stars, and out of His mouth came a (BF)sharp two-edged sword; and His (BG)face was like (BH)the sun [m]shining in its strength.

17 When I saw Him, I (BI)fell at His feet like a dead man. And He (BJ)placed His right hand on me, saying, (BK)Do not be afraid; (BL)I am the first and the last, 18 and the (BM)living One; and I [n](BN)was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have (BO)the keys of death and of Hades. 19 Therefore (BP)write (BQ)the things which you have seen, [o]and the things which are, and the things which will take place (BR)after these things. 20 As for the (BS)mystery of the (BT)seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the (BU)seven golden lampstands: the (BV)seven stars are the angels of (BW)the seven churches, and the seven (BX)lampstands are the seven churches.

Message to Ephesus

“To the angel of the church in (BY)Ephesus write:

The One who holds (BZ)the seven stars in His right hand, the One who walks [p](CA)among the seven golden lampstands, says this:

(CB)I know your deeds and your labor and [q]perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil people, and you have (CC)put those who call themselves (CD)apostles to the test, and they are not, and you found them to be false; and you have [r]perseverance and have endured (CE)on account of My name, and have not become weary. But I have this against you, that you have (CF)left your first love. Therefore, remember from where you have fallen, and (CG)repent, and (CH)do the [s]deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you and I will remove your (CI)lampstand from its place—unless you repent. But you have this, that you hate the deeds of the (CJ)Nicolaitans, which I also hate. (CK)The one who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. 15 (GR)I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; (GS)I wish that you were cold or hot. 16 So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, “(GT)I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have no need of anything,” and you do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked, 18 I advise you to (GU)buy from Me (GV)gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and (GW)white garments so that you may clothe yourself and (GX)the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and eye salve to apply to your eyes so that you may see. 19 (GY)Those whom I love, I rebuke and discipline; therefore be zealous and (GZ)repent. 20 Behold, I stand (HA)at the door and (HB)knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, (HC)I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. 21 (HD)The one who overcomes, I will grant to him (HE)to sit with Me on My throne, as (HF)I also overcame and sat with My Father on His throne. 22 (HG)The one who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”

Scene in Heaven

After (HH)these things I looked, and behold, (HI)a door standing open in heaven, and the first voice which I had heard, (HJ)like the sound of a trumpet speaking with me, said, “(HK)Come up here, and I will (HL)show you what must take place after these things.” Immediately I was (HM)in the [as]Spirit; and behold, (HN)a throne was standing in heaven, and (HO)someone was sitting on the throne. And He who was sitting was like a (HP)jasper stone and a (HQ)sardius in appearance; and there was a [at](HR)rainbow around the throne, like an (HS)emerald in appearance. (HT)Around the throne were (HU)twenty-four thrones; and upon the thrones I saw (HV)twenty-four elders (HW)sitting, clothed in (HX)white garments, and (HY)golden crowns on their heads.

The Throne and Worship of the Creator

Out from the throne *came (HZ)flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder. And there were (IA)seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are [au](IB)the seven spirits of God; and before the throne there was something like a (IC)sea of glass, like crystal; and in the [av]center and (ID)around the throne, (IE)four living creatures (IF)full of eyes in front and behind. (IG)The first living creature was like a lion, the second creature like a calf, the third creature had a face like that of a man, and the fourth creature was like a flying eagle. And the (IH)four living creatures, each one of them having (II)six wings, are (IJ)full of eyes around and within; and (IK)day and night [aw]they do not cease to say,

(IL)Holy, holy, holy is the (IM)Lord God, the Almighty, (IN)who was and who is and who [ax]is to come.”

And when the living creatures give glory, honor, and thanks to Him who (IO)sits on the throne, to (IP)Him who lives forever and ever, 10 the (IQ)twenty-four elders will (IR)fall down before Him who (IS)sits on the throne, and they will worship (IT)Him who lives forever and ever, and will cast their (IU)crowns before the throne, saying,

11 (IV)Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You (IW)created all things, and because of Your will they [ay]existed, and were created.”

The Scroll with Seven Seals

I saw [az]in the right hand of Him who (IX)sat on the throne a [ba](IY)scroll written inside and on the back, (IZ)sealed up with seven seals. And I saw a (JA)strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to break its seals?” And no one (JB)in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it. Then I began to weep greatly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. And one of the elders *said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the (JC)Lion that is (JD)from the tribe of Judah, the (JE)Root of David, has overcome so as to be able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

And I saw [bb]between the throne (with the four living creatures) and (JF)the elders a (JG)Lamb standing, as if (JH)slaughtered, having seven (JI)horns and (JJ)seven eyes, which are [bc](JK)the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. And He came and took (JL)the scroll out of the right hand of Him who (JM)sat on the throne. When He had taken the scroll, the (JN)four living creatures and the (JO)twenty-four elders (JP)fell down before the (JQ)Lamb, each one holding a (JR)harp and (JS)golden bowls full of incense, which are the (JT)prayers of the [bd]saints. And they *sang a (JU)new song, saying,

(JV)Worthy are You to take the scroll and to break its seals; for You were (JW)slaughtered, and You (JX)purchased people for God with Your blood from (JY)every tribe, language, people, and nation.

10 You have made them into a (JZ)kingdom and (KA)priests to our God, and they will (KB)reign upon the earth.”

Angels Exalt the Lamb

11 Then I looked, and I heard the voices of many angels (KC)around the throne and the (KD)living creatures and the (KE)elders; and the number of them was [be](KF)myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice,

(KG)Worthy is the (KH)Lamb that was (KI)slaughtered to receive power, wealth, wisdom, might, honor, glory, and blessing.”

13 And I heard (KJ)every created thing which is in heaven, or on the earth, or under the earth, or on the sea, and all the things in them, saying,

“To Him who (KK)sits on the throne and to the (KL)Lamb (KM)be the blessing, the honor, the glory, and the dominion forever and ever.”

14 And the (KN)four living creatures were saying, “(KO)Amen.” And the (KP)elders (KQ)fell down and worshiped.

The First Seal: Conqueror on a White Horse

Then I saw when the (KR)Lamb broke one of the (KS)seven seals, and I heard one of the (KT)four living creatures saying as with a (KU)voice of thunder, “Come[bf]!” I looked, and behold, a (KV)white horse, and the one who sat on it had a bow; and (KW)a crown was given to him, and he went out (KX)conquering and to conquer.

The Second Seal: War

When He broke the second seal, I heard the (KY)second living creature saying, “Come[bg]!” And another, (KZ)a red horse, went out; and to him who sat on it, it was granted to (LA)take peace from the earth, and that people would kill one another; and a large sword was given to him.

The Third Seal: Famine

When He broke the third seal, I heard the (LB)third living creature saying, “Come[bh]!” I looked, and behold, a (LC)black horse, and the one who sat on it had a (LD)pair of scales in his hand. And I heard something like a voice in the center of the (LE)four living creatures saying, “A [bi]quart of wheat for a [bj]denarius, and three [bk]quarts of barley for a [bl]denarius; and (LF)do not damage the oil and the wine.”

The Fourth Seal: Death

When the Lamb broke the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the (LG)fourth living creature saying, “Come[bm]!” I looked, and behold, [bn]an (LH)ashen horse; and the one who sat on it had the name (LI)Death, and (LJ)Hades was following with him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, (LK)to kill with sword, and famine, and [bo]plague, and by the wild animals of the earth.

The Fifth Seal: Martyrs

When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw (LL)underneath the (LM)altar the (LN)souls of those who had been killed (LO)because of the word of God, and because of the (LP)testimony which they had maintained; 10 and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, “(LQ)How long, O [bp](LR)Lord, (LS)holy and true, [bq]will You refrain from (LT)judging and avenging our blood on (LU)those who live on the earth?” 11 And a (LV)white robe was given to each of them; and they were told that they were to (LW)rest for a little while longer, (LX)until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers and sisters who were to be killed even as they had been, was (LY)completed also.

The Sixth Seal: Terror

12 And I looked when He broke the sixth seal, and there was a great (LZ)earthquake; and the (MA)sun became as black as (MB)sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood; 13 and (MC)the stars of the sky fell to the earth, (MD)as a fig tree drops its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind. 14 (ME)The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and (MF)every mountain and island was removed from its place. 15 Then (MG)the kings of the earth and the eminent people, and the commanders and the wealthy and the strong, and every slave and free person hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains; 16 and they *(MH)said to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the [br]sight of Him (MI)who sits on the throne, and from the (MJ)wrath of the Lamb; 17 for (MK)the great day of Their wrath has come, and (ML)who is able to stand?”

An Interlude

After this I saw (MM)four angels standing at the (MN)four corners of the earth, holding back (MO)the four winds of the earth (MP)so that no wind would blow on the earth, or on the sea, or on any tree. And I saw another angel ascending (MQ)from the rising of the sun, holding the (MR)seal of (MS)the living God; and he called out with a loud voice to the (MT)four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea, saying, “(MU)Do not harm the earth, or the sea, or the trees until we have (MV)sealed the bond-servants of our God on their (MW)foreheads.”

The 144,000

And I heard the (MX)number of those who were sealed: (MY)144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel:

from the tribe of Judah, twelve thousand were sealed, from the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand, from the tribe of Gad twelve thousand, from the tribe of Asher twelve thousand, from the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand, from the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand, from the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand, from the tribe of Levi twelve thousand, from the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand, from the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand, from the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand, and from the tribe of Benjamin, twelve thousand were sealed.

A Multitude from the Tribulation

After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from (MZ)every nation and all the tribes, peoples, and languages, standing (NA)before the throne and (NB)before the Lamb, clothed in (NC)white robes, and (ND)palm branches were in their hands; 10 and they *cried out with a loud voice, saying,

(NE)Salvation belongs to our God (NF)who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”

11 And all the angels were standing (NG)around the throne and around (NH)the elders and the (NI)four living creatures; and they (NJ)fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying,

(NK)Amen, (NL)blessing, glory, wisdom, thanksgiving, honor, power, and might belong to our God forever and ever. (NM)Amen.”

13 Then one of the elders (NN)responded, saying to me, “These who are clothed in the (NO)white robes, who are they, and where have they come from?” 14 I [bs]said to him, “My lord, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the (NP)great tribulation, and they have (NQ)washed their robes and made them (NR)white in the (NS)blood of the Lamb. 15 For this reason they are (NT)before the throne of God, and they (NU)serve Him day and night in His [bt](NV)temple; and (NW)He who sits on the throne will spread His (NX)tabernacle over them. 16 (NY)They will no longer hunger nor thirst, nor will the sun [bu]beat down on them, nor any scorching heat; 17 for the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their (NZ)shepherd, and will guide them to springs of the [bv](OA)water of life; and (OB)God will wipe every tear from their eyes.”

The Seventh Seal: Trumpets

When the Lamb broke the (OC)seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. And I saw (OD)the seven angels who stand before God, and seven (OE)trumpets were given to them.

(OF)Another angel came and stood at the (OG)altar, holding a (OH)golden censer; and much (OI)incense was given to him, so that he might [bw]add it to the (OJ)prayers of all the [bx]saints on the (OK)golden altar which was before the throne. And (OL)the smoke of the incense ascended from the angel’s hand with the prayers of the [by]saints before God. Then the angel [bz]took the [ca]censer and (OM)filled it with the fire of the altar, and (ON)hurled it to the earth; and there were (OO)peals of thunder and sounds, and flashes of lightning and an (OP)earthquake.

(OQ)And the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound them.

The first sounded, and there was (OR)hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled to the earth; and (OS)a third of the earth was burned up, and (OT)a third of the (OU)trees were burned up, and all the green (OV)grass was burned up.

The second angel sounded, and something like a great (OW)mountain burning with fire was hurled into the sea; and (OX)a third of the (OY)sea became blood, and (OZ)a third of the creatures which were in the sea [cb]and had life, died; and a third of the (PA)ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded, and a great star (PB)fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a (PC)third of the rivers and on the (PD)springs of waters. 11 The star is named Wormwood; and a (PE)third of the waters became (PF)wormwood, and many people died from the waters because they were made bitter.

12 The fourth angel sounded, and a (PG)third of the (PH)sun, a third of the (PI)moon, and a (PJ)third of the (PK)stars were struck, so that a (PL)third of them would be darkened and the day would not shine for a (PM)third of it, and the night in the same way.

13 Then I looked, and I heard [cc]an eagle flying in (PN)midheaven, saying with a loud voice, “(PO)Woe, woe, woe to (PP)those who live on the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the (PQ)three angels who are about to sound!”

The Fifth Trumpet: Shaft of the Abyss

Then the (PR)fifth angel sounded, and I saw a (PS)star from heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the (PT)key to the (PU)shaft of the abyss was given to him. He opened the shaft of the abyss, and (PV)smoke ascended out of the shaft like the smoke of a great furnace; and (PW)the sun and the air were darkened from the smoke of the shaft. Then out of the smoke came (PX)locusts [cd]upon the earth, and power was given them, as the (PY)scorpions of the earth have power. They were told not to (PZ)hurt the (QA)grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the people who do not have the (QB)seal of God on their foreheads. And [ce]they were not permitted to kill [cf]anyone, but to torment for (QC)five months; and their torment was like the torment of a (QD)scorpion when it [cg]stings a person. And in those days (QE)people will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death [ch]will flee from them!

The [ci](QF)appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and their faces were like human faces. They had hair like the hair of women, and their (QG)teeth were like the teeth of lions. They had breastplates like breastplates of iron; and the (QH)sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to battle. 10 They have tails like (QI)scorpions, and stings; and in their (QJ)tails is their power to hurt people for (QK)five months. 11 They have as king over them, the angel of the (QL)abyss; his name in (QM)Hebrew is [cj](QN)Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name [ck]Apollyon.

12 (QO)The first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still coming after these things.

The Sixth Trumpet: Army from the East

13 Then the sixth angel sounded, and I heard [cl]a voice from the [cm]four (QP)horns of the (QQ)golden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the (QR)four angels who are bound at the (QS)great river Euphrates.” 15 And the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were (QT)released, so that they would kill a (QU)third of mankind. 16 The number of the armies of the horsemen was (QV)two hundred million; (QW)I heard the number of them. 17 And this is how I saw (QX)in my vision the horses and those who sat on them: the riders had breastplates the color of fire, of hyacinth, and of [cn](QY)brimstone; and the heads of the horses are like the heads of lions; and (QZ)out of their mouths *came fire and smoke and [co](RA)brimstone. 18 A (RB)third of mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the (RC)fire, the smoke, and the [cp]brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents and have heads, and with them they do harm.

20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, (RD)did not repent of (RE)the works of their hands so as not to (RF)worship demons and (RG)the idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk; 21 and they (RH)did not repent of their murders, nor of their (RI)witchcraft, nor of their (RJ)sexual immorality, nor of their thefts.

The Angel and the Little Scroll

10 I saw another (RK)strong angel (RL)coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud; and the (RM)rainbow was on his head, and (RN)his face was like the sun, and his (RO)feet like pillars of fire; and he had in his hand a (RP)little scroll, which was open. He placed (RQ)his right foot on the sea and his left on the land; and he cried out with a loud voice, (RR)as when a lion roars; and when he had cried out, the (RS)seven peals of thunder [cq]uttered their voices. When the seven peals of thunder had spoken, (RT)I was about to write; and I (RU)heard a voice from heaven, saying, “(RV)Seal up the things which the seven peals of thunder have spoken, and do not write them.” Then the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land (RW)raised his right hand to heaven, (RX)and swore by (RY)Him who lives forever and ever, (RZ)who created heaven and the things in it, and the earth and the things in it, and the sea and the things in it, that (SA)there will no longer be a delay, but in the days of the voice of the (SB)seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then (SC)the mystery of God is finished, as He announced to His servants the prophets.

Then (SD)the voice which I heard from heaven, I heard again speaking with me, and saying, “Go, take (SE)the scroll which is open in the hand of the angel who (SF)stands on the sea and on the land.” And I went to the angel, telling him to give me the little scroll. And he *said to me, “(SG)Take it and eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.” 10 I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it, and in my mouth it was sweet as honey; and when I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter. 11 And (SH)they *said to me, “You must (SI)prophesy again concerning (SJ)many peoples, nations, languages, and (SK)kings.”

Prologue

The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave(A) him to show his servants what must soon take place.(B) He made it known by sending his angel(C) to his servant John,(D) who testifies to everything he saw—that is, the word of God(E) and the testimony of Jesus Christ.(F) Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it,(G) because the time is near.(H)

Greetings and Doxology

John,

To the seven churches(I) in the province of Asia:

Grace and peace to you(J) from him who is, and who was, and who is to come,(K) and from the seven spirits[a](L) before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness,(M) the firstborn from the dead,(N) and the ruler of the kings of the earth.(O)

To him who loves us(P) and has freed us from our sins by his blood,(Q) and has made us to be a kingdom and priests(R) to serve his God and Father(S)—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.(T)

“Look, he is coming with the clouds,”[b](U)
and “every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him”;(V)
and all peoples on earth “will mourn(W) because of him.”[c]
So shall it be! Amen.

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,”(X) says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come,(Y) the Almighty.”(Z)

John’s Vision of Christ

I, John,(AA) your brother and companion in the suffering(AB) and kingdom(AC) and patient endurance(AD) that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God(AE) and the testimony of Jesus.(AF) 10 On the Lord’s Day(AG) I was in the Spirit,(AH) and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet,(AI) 11 which said: “Write on a scroll what you see(AJ) and send it to the seven churches:(AK) to Ephesus,(AL) Smyrna,(AM) Pergamum,(AN) Thyatira,(AO) Sardis,(AP) Philadelphia(AQ) and Laodicea.”(AR)

12 I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands,(AS) 13 and among the lampstands(AT) was someone like a son of man,[d](AU) dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet(AV) and with a golden sash around his chest.(AW) 14 The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire.(AX) 15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace,(AY) and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters.(AZ) 16 In his right hand he held seven stars,(BA) and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword.(BB) His face was like the sun(BC) shining in all its brilliance.

17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet(BD) as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me(BE) and said: “Do not be afraid.(BF) I am the First and the Last.(BG) 18 I am the Living One; I was dead,(BH) and now look, I am alive for ever and ever!(BI) And I hold the keys of death and Hades.(BJ)

19 “Write, therefore, what you have seen,(BK) what is now and what will take place later. 20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand(BL) and of the seven golden lampstands(BM) is this: The seven stars are the angels[e] of the seven churches,(BN) and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.(BO)

To the Church in Ephesus

“To the angel[f] of the church in Ephesus(BP) write:

These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand(BQ) and walks among the seven golden lampstands.(BR) I know your deeds,(BS) your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested(BT) those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false.(BU) You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name,(BV) and have not grown weary.

Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.(BW) Consider how far you have fallen! Repent(BX) and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand(BY) from its place. But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans,(BZ) which I also hate.

Whoever has ears, let them hear(CA) what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious,(CB) I will give the right to eat from the tree of life,(CC) which is in the paradise(CD) of God.

To the Church in Smyrna

“To the angel of the church in Smyrna(CE) write:

These are the words of him who is the First and the Last,(CF) who died and came to life again.(CG) I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich!(CH) I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not,(CI) but are a synagogue of Satan.(CJ) 10 Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you,(CK) and you will suffer persecution for ten days.(CL) Be faithful,(CM) even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.(CN)

11 Whoever has ears, let them hear(CO) what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.(CP)

To the Church in Pergamum

12 “To the angel of the church in Pergamum(CQ) write:

These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword.(CR) 13 I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me,(CS) not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness,(CT) who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.(CU)

14 Nevertheless, I have a few things against you:(CV) There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam,(CW) who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols(CX) and committed sexual immorality.(CY) 15 Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.(CZ) 16 Repent(DA) therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.(DB)

17 Whoever has ears, let them hear(DC) what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious,(DD) I will give some of the hidden manna.(DE) I will also give that person a white stone with a new name(DF) written on it, known only to the one who receives it.(DG)

To the Church in Thyatira

18 “To the angel of the church in Thyatira(DH) write:

These are the words of the Son of God,(DI) whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze.(DJ) 19 I know your deeds,(DK) your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.

20 Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel,(DL) who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.(DM) 21 I have given her time(DN) to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling.(DO) 22 So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery(DP) with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. 23 I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds,(DQ) and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.(DR)

24 Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you,(DS) 25 except to hold on to what you have(DT) until I come.’(DU)

26 To the one who is victorious(DV) and does my will to the end,(DW) I will give authority over the nations(DX) 27 that one ‘will rule them with an iron scepter(DY) and will dash them to pieces like pottery’[g](DZ)—just as I have received authority from my Father. 28 I will also give that one the morning star.(EA) 29 Whoever has ears, let them hear(EB) what the Spirit says to the churches.

To the Church in Sardis

“To the angel[h] of the church in Sardis(EC) write:

These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits[i](ED) of God and the seven stars.(EE) I know your deeds;(EF) you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.(EG) Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent.(EH) But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief,(EI) and you will not know at what time(EJ) I will come to you.

Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes.(EK) They will walk with me, dressed in white,(EL) for they are worthy. The one who is victorious(EM) will, like them, be dressed in white.(EN) I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life,(EO) but will acknowledge that name before my Father(EP) and his angels. Whoever has ears, let them hear(EQ) what the Spirit says to the churches.

To the Church in Philadelphia

“To the angel of the church in Philadelphia(ER) write:

These are the words of him who is holy(ES) and true,(ET) who holds the key of David.(EU) What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. I know your deeds.(EV) See, I have placed before you an open door(EW) that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.(EX) I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan,(EY) who claim to be Jews though they are not,(EZ) but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet(FA) and acknowledge that I have loved you.(FB) 10 Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you(FC) from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world(FD) to test(FE) the inhabitants of the earth.(FF)

11 I am coming soon.(FG) Hold on to what you have,(FH) so that no one will take your crown.(FI) 12 The one who is victorious(FJ) I will make a pillar(FK) in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God(FL) and the name of the city of my God,(FM) the new Jerusalem,(FN) which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name. 13 Whoever has ears, let them hear(FO) what the Spirit says to the churches.

To the Church in Laodicea

14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea(FP) write:

These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness,(FQ) the ruler of God’s creation.(FR) 15 I know your deeds,(FS) that you are neither cold nor hot.(FT) I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’(FU) But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.(FV) 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire,(FW) so you can become rich; and white clothes(FX) to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness;(FY) and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.

19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline.(FZ) So be earnest and repent.(GA) 20 Here I am! I stand at the door(GB) and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door,(GC) I will come in(GD) and eat with that person, and they with me.

21 To the one who is victorious,(GE) I will give the right to sit with me on my throne,(GF) just as I was victorious(GG) and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 Whoever has ears, let them hear(GH) what the Spirit says to the churches.”

The Throne in Heaven

After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open(GI) in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet(GJ) said, “Come up here,(GK) and I will show you what must take place after this.”(GL) At once I was in the Spirit,(GM) and there before me was a throne in heaven(GN) with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper(GO) and ruby.(GP) A rainbow(GQ) that shone like an emerald(GR) encircled the throne. Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders.(GS) They were dressed in white(GT) and had crowns of gold on their heads. From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder.(GU) In front of the throne, seven lamps(GV) were blazing. These are the seven spirits[j](GW) of God. Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass,(GX) clear as crystal.

In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures,(GY) and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back.(GZ) The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle.(HA) Each of the four living creatures(HB) had six wings(HC) and was covered with eyes all around,(HD) even under its wings. Day and night(HE) they never stop saying:

“‘Holy, holy, holy

is the Lord God Almighty,’[k](HF)

who was, and is, and is to come.”(HG)

Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne(HH) and who lives for ever and ever,(HI) 10 the twenty-four elders(HJ) fall down before him(HK) who sits on the throne(HL) and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:

11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,(HM)
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
    and have their being.”(HN)

The Scroll and the Lamb

Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne(HO) a scroll with writing on both sides(HP) and sealed(HQ) with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel(HR) proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion(HS) of the tribe of Judah,(HT) the Root of David,(HU) has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

Then I saw a Lamb,(HV) looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures(HW) and the elders.(HX) The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes,(HY) which are the seven spirits[l](HZ) of God sent out into all the earth. He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne.(IA) And when he had taken it, the four living creatures(IB) and the twenty-four elders(IC) fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp(ID) and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers(IE) of God’s people. And they sang a new song, saying:(IF)

“You are worthy(IG) to take the scroll
    and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
and with your blood(IH) you purchased(II) for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.(IJ)
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests(IK) to serve our God,
and they will reign[m] on the earth.”(IL)

11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand.(IM) They encircled the throne and the living creatures(IN) and the elders.(IO) 12 In a loud voice they were saying:

“Worthy is the Lamb,(IP) who was slain,(IQ)
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”(IR)

13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth(IS) and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne(IT) and to the Lamb(IU)
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”(IV)

14 The four living creatures(IW) said, “Amen,”(IX) and the elders(IY) fell down and worshiped.(IZ)

The Seals

I watched as the Lamb(JA) opened the first of the seven seals.(JB) Then I heard one of the four living creatures(JC) say in a voice like thunder,(JD) “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a white horse!(JE) Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown,(JF) and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.(JG)

When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature(JH) say, “Come!” Then another horse came out, a fiery red one.(JI) Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth(JJ) and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.

When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature(JK) say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse!(JL) Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures,(JM) saying, “Two pounds[n] of wheat for a day’s wages,[o] and six pounds[p] of barley for a day’s wages,[q](JN) and do not damage(JO) the oil and the wine!”

When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature(JP) say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a pale horse!(JQ) Its rider was named Death, and Hades(JR) was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.(JS)

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under(JT) the altar(JU) the souls of those who had been slain(JV) because of the word of God(JW) and the testimony they had maintained. 10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long,(JX) Sovereign Lord,(JY) holy and true,(JZ) until you judge the inhabitants of the earth(KA) and avenge our blood?”(KB) 11 Then each of them was given a white robe,(KC) and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,[r] were killed just as they had been.(KD)

12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake.(KE) The sun turned black(KF) like sackcloth(KG) made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth,(KH) as figs drop from a fig tree(KI) when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up,(KJ) and every mountain and island was removed from its place.(KK)

15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free,(KL) hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.(KM) 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us(KN) and hide us[s] from the face of him who sits on the throne(KO) and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day(KP) of their[t] wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”(KQ)

144,000 Sealed

After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners(KR) of the earth, holding back the four winds(KS) of the earth to prevent(KT) any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree. Then I saw another angel coming up from the east, having the seal(KU) of the living God.(KV) He called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea:(KW) “Do not harm(KX) the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads(KY) of the servants of our God.” Then I heard the number(KZ) of those who were sealed: 144,000(LA) from all the tribes of Israel.

From the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed,

from the tribe of Reuben 12,000,

from the tribe of Gad 12,000,

from the tribe of Asher 12,000,

from the tribe of Naphtali 12,000,

from the tribe of Manasseh 12,000,

from the tribe of Simeon 12,000,

from the tribe of Levi 12,000,

from the tribe of Issachar 12,000,

from the tribe of Zebulun 12,000,

from the tribe of Joseph 12,000,

from the tribe of Benjamin 12,000.

The Great Multitude in White Robes

After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language,(LB) standing before the throne(LC) and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes(LD) and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice:

“Salvation belongs to our God,(LE)
who sits on the throne,(LF)
and to the Lamb.”

11 All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders(LG) and the four living creatures.(LH) They fell down on their faces(LI) before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying:

“Amen!
Praise and glory
and wisdom and thanks and honor
and power and strength
be to our God for ever and ever.
Amen!”(LJ)

13 Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes(LK)—who are they, and where did they come from?”

14 I answered, “Sir, you know.”

And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes(LL) and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.(LM) 15 Therefore,

“they are before the throne of God(LN)
and serve him(LO) day and night in his temple;(LP)
and he who sits on the throne(LQ)
will shelter them with his presence.(LR)
16 ‘Never again will they hunger;
    never again will they thirst.(LS)
The sun will not beat down on them,’[u]
    nor any scorching heat.(LT)
17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne
    will be their shepherd;(LU)
‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’[v](LV)
‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’[w](LW)

The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer

When he opened the seventh seal,(LX) there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.

And I saw the seven angels(LY) who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.(LZ)

Another angel,(MA) who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people,(MB) on the golden altar(MC) in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God(MD) from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar,(ME) and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder,(MF) rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.(MG)

The Trumpets

Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets(MH) prepared to sound them.

The first angel(MI) sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire(MJ) mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third(MK) of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.(ML)

The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain,(MM) all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third(MN) of the sea turned into blood,(MO) a third(MP) of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky(MQ) on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water(MR) 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[x] A third(MS) of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.(MT)

12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third(MU) of them turned dark.(MV) A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.(MW)

13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair(MX) call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe(MY) to the inhabitants of the earth,(MZ) because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”

The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth.(NA) The star was given the key(NB) to the shaft of the Abyss.(NC) When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace.(ND) The sun and sky were darkened(NE) by the smoke from the Abyss.(NF) And out of the smoke locusts(NG) came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions(NH) of the earth. They were told not to harm(NI) the grass of the earth or any plant or tree,(NJ) but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.(NK) They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months.(NL) And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion(NM) when it strikes. During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.(NN)

The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle.(NO) On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces.(NP) Their hair was like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth.(NQ) They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle.(NR) 10 They had tails with stingers, like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months.(NS) 11 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss,(NT) whose name in Hebrew(NU) is Abaddon(NV) and in Greek is Apollyon (that is, Destroyer).

12 The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.(NW)

13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the four horns(NX) of the golden altar that is before God.(NY) 14 It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels(NZ) who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”(OA) 15 And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released(OB) to kill a third(OC) of mankind.(OD) 16 The number of the mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand. I heard their number.(OE)

17 The horses and riders I saw in my vision looked like this: Their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulfur. The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths(OF) came fire, smoke and sulfur.(OG) 18 A third(OH) of mankind was killed(OI) by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur(OJ) that came out of their mouths. 19 The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury.

20 The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent(OK) of the work of their hands;(OL) they did not stop worshiping demons,(OM) and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk.(ON) 21 Nor did they repent(OO) of their murders, their magic arts,(OP) their sexual immorality(OQ) or their thefts.

The Angel and the Little Scroll

10 Then I saw another mighty angel(OR) coming down from heaven.(OS) He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow(OT) above his head; his face was like the sun,(OU) and his legs were like fiery pillars.(OV) He was holding a little scroll,(OW) which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land,(OX) and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion.(OY) When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders(OZ) spoke. And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write;(PA) but I heard a voice from heaven(PB) say, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down.”(PC)

Then the angel I had seen standing on the sea and on the land(PD) raised his right hand to heaven.(PE) And he swore(PF) by him who lives for ever and ever,(PG) who created the heavens and all that is in them, the earth and all that is in it, and the sea and all that is in it,(PH) and said, “There will be no more delay!(PI) But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet,(PJ) the mystery(PK) of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.”(PL)

Then the voice that I had heard from heaven(PM) spoke to me once more: “Go, take the scroll(PN) that lies open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.”

So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, “Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but ‘in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.’[y](PO) 10 I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth,(PP) but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. 11 Then I was told, “You must prophesy(PQ) again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings.”(PR)
