Saul Saves Jabesh Gilead

11 Then ^(A)Nahash the Ammonite came up and ^[a]encamped against ^(B)Jabesh Gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, ^(C)“Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.”

² And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, “On this condition I will make a covenant with you, that I may put out all your right eyes, and bring ^(D)reproach on all Israel.”

³ Then the elders of Jabesh said to him, “Hold off for seven days, that we may send messengers to all the territory of Israel. And then, if there is no one to ^[b]save us, we will come out to you.”

⁴ So the messengers came ^(E)to Gibeah of Saul and told the news in the hearing of the people. And ^(F)all the people lifted up their voices and wept. ⁵ Now there was Saul, coming behind the herd from the field; and Saul said, “What troubles the people, that they weep?” And they told him the words of the men of Jabesh. ^6 (G)Then the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard this news, and his anger was greatly aroused. ⁷ So he took a yoke of oxen and ^(H)cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, ^(I)“Whoever does not go out with Saul and Samuel to battle, so it shall be done to his oxen.”

And the fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out ^[c]with one consent. ⁸ When he numbered them in ^(J)Bezek, the children ^(K)of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. ⁹ And they said to the messengers who came, “Thus you shall say to the men of Jabesh Gilead: ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have help.’ ” Then the messengers came and reported it to the men of Jabesh, and they were glad. ¹⁰ Therefore the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you may do with us whatever seems good to you.”

¹¹ So it was, on the next day, that ^(L)Saul put the people ^(M)in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and killed Ammonites until the heat of the day. And it happened that those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.

¹² Then the people said to Samuel, ^(N)“Who is he who said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ ^(O)Bring the men, that we may put them to death.”

¹³ But Saul said, ^(P)“Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today ^(Q)the Lord has accomplished salvation in Israel.”

¹⁴ Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go ^(R)to Gilgal and renew the kingdom there.” ¹⁵ So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king ^(S)before the Lord in Gilgal. ^(T)There they made sacrifices of peace offerings before the Lord, and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

Samuel’s Address at Saul’s Coronation

12 Now Samuel said to all Israel: “Indeed I have ^[d]heeded ^(U)your voice in all that you said to me, and ^(V)have made a king over you. ² And now here is the king, ^(W)walking before you; ^(X)and I am old and grayheaded, and look, my sons are with you. I have walked before you from my childhood to this day. ³ Here I am. Witness against me before the Lord and before ^(Y)His anointed: ^(Z)Whose ox have I taken, or whose donkey have I taken, or whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed, or from whose hand have I received any ^(AA)bribe with which to ^(AB)blind my eyes? I will restore it to you.”

⁴ And they said, ^(AC)“You have not cheated us or oppressed us, nor have you taken anything from any man’s hand.”

⁵ Then he said to them, “The Lord is witness against you, and His anointed is witness this day, ^(AD)that you have not found anything ^(AE)in my hand.”

And they answered, “He is witness.”

⁶ Then Samuel said to the people, ^(AF)“It is the Lord who raised up Moses and Aaron, and who brought your fathers up from the land of Egypt. ⁷ Now therefore, stand still, that I may ^(AG)reason with you before the Lord concerning all the ^(AH)righteous acts of the Lord which He did to you and your fathers: ^8 (AI)When Jacob had gone into ^[e]Egypt, and your fathers ^(AJ)cried out to the Lord, then the Lord ^(AK)sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your fathers out of Egypt and made them dwell in this place. ⁹ And when they ^(AL)forgot the Lord their God, He sold them into the hand of ^(AM)Sisera, commander of the army of Hazor, into the hand of the ^(AN)Philistines, and into the hand of the king of ^(AO)Moab; and they fought against them. ¹⁰ Then they cried out to the Lord, and said, ^(AP)‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord ^(AQ)and served the Baals and ^[f]Ashtoreths; but now deliver us from the hand of our enemies, and we will serve You.’ ¹¹ And the Lord sent ^[g]Jerubbaal, ^[h]Bedan, ^(AR)Jephthah, and ^(AS)Samuel,^[i] and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side; and you dwelt in safety. ¹² And when you saw that ^(AT)Nahash king of the Ammonites came against you, ^(AU)you said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ when ^(AV)the Lord your God was your king.

¹³ “Now therefore, ^(AW)here is the king ^(AX)whom you have chosen and whom you have desired. And take note, ^(AY)the Lord has set a king over you. ¹⁴ If you ^(AZ)fear the Lord and serve Him and obey His voice, and do not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then both you and the king who reigns over you will continue following the Lord your God. ¹⁵ However, if you do ^(BA)not obey the voice of the Lord, but ^(BB)rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then the hand of the Lord will be against you, as it was against your fathers.

¹⁶ “Now therefore, ^(BC)stand and see this great thing which the Lord will do before your eyes: ¹⁷ Is today not the ^(BD)wheat harvest? ^(BE)I will call to the Lord, and He will send thunder and ^(BF)rain, that you may perceive and see that ^(BG)your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the Lord, in asking a king for yourselves.”

¹⁸ So Samuel called to the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day; and ^(BH)all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.

¹⁹ And all the people said to Samuel, ^(BI)“Pray for your servants to the Lord your God, that we may not die; for we have added to all our sins the evil of asking a king for ourselves.”

²⁰ Then Samuel said to the people, “Do not fear. You have done all this wickedness; ^(BJ)yet do not turn aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. ²¹ And ^(BK)do not turn aside; ^(BL)for then you would go after empty things which cannot profit or deliver, for they are nothing. ²² For ^(BM)the Lord will not forsake ^(BN)His people, ^(BO)for His great name’s sake, because ^(BP)it has pleased the Lord to make you His people. ²³ Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord ^(BQ)in ceasing to pray for you; but ^(BR)I will teach you the ^(BS)good and the right way. ^24 (BT)Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for ^(BU)consider what ^(BV)great things He has done for you. ²⁵ But if you still do wickedly, ^(BW)you shall be swept away, ^(BX)both you and your king.”

The Family of Adam—Seth to Abraham^(A)

1 Adam,^{(B) (C)}Seth, Enosh, ² Cainan, Mahalalel, Jared, ³ Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, ^4 (D)Noah,^[a] Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

^5 (E)The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. ⁶ The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, ^[b]Diphath, and Togarmah. ⁷ The sons of Javan were Elishah, ^[c]Tarshishah, Kittim, and ^[d]Rodanim.

^8 (F)The sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan. ⁹ The sons of Cush were Seba, Havilah, ^[e]Sabta, ^[f]Raama, and Sabtecha. The sons of Raama were Sheba and Dedan. ¹⁰ Cush ^(G)begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth. ¹¹ Mizraim begot Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim, ¹² Pathrusim, Casluhim (from whom came the Philistines and the ^(H)Caphtorim). ^13 (I)Canaan begot Sidon, his firstborn, and Heth; ¹⁴ the Jebusite, the Amorite, and the Girgashite; ¹⁵ the Hivite, the Arkite, and the Sinite; ¹⁶ the Arvadite, the Zemarite, and the Hamathite.

¹⁷ The sons of ^(J)Shem were Elam, Asshur, ^(K)Arphaxad, Lud, Aram, Uz, Hul, Gether, and ^[g]Meshech. ¹⁸ Arphaxad begot Shelah, and Shelah begot Eber. ¹⁹ To Eber were born two sons: the name of one was ^[h]Peleg, for in his days the ^[i]earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan. ^20 (L)Joktan begot Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, ²¹ Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, ^22 [j]Ebal, Abimael, Sheba, ²³ Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan.

^24 (M)Shem, Arphaxad, Shelah, ^25 (N)Eber, Peleg, Reu, ²⁶ Serug, Nahor, Terah, ²⁷ and ^(O)Abram, who is Abraham. ^28 (P)The sons of Abraham were ^(Q)Isaac and ^(R)Ishmael.

The Family of Ishmael^(S)

²⁹ These are their genealogies: The ^(T)firstborn of Ishmael was Nebajoth; then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, ³⁰ Mishma, Dumah, Massa, ^[k]Hadad, Tema, ³¹ Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These were the sons of Ishmael.

The Family of Keturah^(U)

³² Now ^(V)the sons born to Keturah, Abraham’s concubine, were Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. The sons of Jokshan were Sheba and Dedan. ³³ The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.

The Family of Isaac^(W)

³⁴ And ^(X)Abraham begot Isaac. ^(Y)The sons of Isaac were Esau and Israel. ³⁵ The sons of ^(Z)Esau were Eliphaz, Reuel, Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. ³⁶ And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, ^[l]Zephi, Gatam, and Kenaz; and by ^(AA)Timna, Amalek. ³⁷ The sons of Reuel were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah.

The Family of Seir^(AB)

^38 (AC)The sons of Seir were Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. ³⁹ And the sons of Lotan were Hori and ^[m]Homam; Lotan’s sister was Timna. ⁴⁰ The sons of Shobal were ^[n]Alian, Manahath, Ebal, ^[o]Shephi, and Onam. The sons of Zibeon were Ajah and Anah. ⁴¹ The son of Anah was ^(AD)Dishon. The sons of Dishon were ^[p]Hamran, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran. ⁴² The sons of Ezer were Bilhan, Zaavan, and ^[q]Jaakan. The sons of Dishan were Uz and Aran.

The Kings of Edom^(AE)

⁴³ Now these were the ^(AF)kings who reigned in the land of Edom before a king reigned over the children of Israel: Bela the son of Beor, and the name of his city was Dinhabah. ⁴⁴ And when Bela died, Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place. ⁴⁵ When Jobab died, Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. ⁴⁶ And when Husham died, Hadad the son of Bedad, who ^[r]attacked Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his place. The name of his city was Avith. ⁴⁷ When Hadad died, Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place. ^48 (AG)And when Samlah died, Saul of Rehoboth-by-the-River reigned in his place. ⁴⁹ When Saul died, Baal-Hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his place. ⁵⁰ And when Baal-Hanan died, ^[s]Hadad reigned in his place; and the name of his city was ^[t]Pai. His wife’s name was Mehetabel the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab. ⁵¹ Hadad died also. And the chiefs of Edom were Chief Timnah, Chief ^[u]Aliah, Chief Jetheth, ⁵² Chief Aholibamah, Chief Elah, Chief Pinon, ⁵³ Chief Kenaz, Chief Teman, Chief Mibzar, ⁵⁴ Chief Magdiel, and Chief Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom.

Concern for Their Faithfulness

11 Oh, that you would bear with me in a little ^(A)folly—and indeed you do bear with me. ² For I am ^(B)jealous for you with godly jealousy. For ^(C)I have betrothed you to one husband, ^(D)that I may present you ^(E)as a chaste virgin to Christ. ³ But I fear, lest somehow, as ^(F)the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds ^(G)may be corrupted from the ^[a]simplicity that is in Christ. ⁴ For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a ^(H)different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it!

Paul and False Apostles

⁵ For I consider that ^(I)I am not at all inferior to the most eminent apostles. ⁶ Even though ^(J)I am untrained in speech, yet I am not ^(K)in knowledge. But ^(L)we have ^[b]been thoroughly manifested among you in all things.

⁷ Did I commit sin in ^[c]humbling myself that you might be exalted, because I preached the gospel of God to you ^(M)free of charge? ⁸ I robbed other churches, taking wages from them to minister to you. ⁹ And when I was present with you, and in need, ^(N)I was a burden to no one, for what I lacked ^(O)the brethren who came from Macedonia supplied. And in everything I kept myself from being burdensome to you, and so I will keep myself. ^10 (P)As the truth of Christ is in me, ^(Q)no one shall stop me from this boasting in the regions of Achaia. ¹¹ Why? ^(R)Because I do not love you? God knows!

¹² But what I do, I will also continue to do, ^(S)that I may cut off the opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the things of which they boast. ¹³ For such ^(T)are false apostles, ^(U)deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. ¹⁴ And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into ^(V)an angel of light. ¹⁵ Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, ^(W)whose end will be according to their works.

Reluctant Boasting

¹⁶ I say again, let no one think me a fool. If otherwise, at least receive me as a fool, that I also may boast a little. ¹⁷ What I speak, ^(X)I speak not according to the Lord, but as it were, foolishly, in this confidence of boasting. ¹⁸ Seeing that many boast according to the flesh, I also will boast. ¹⁹ For you put up with fools gladly, ^(Y)since you yourselves are wise! ²⁰ For you put up with it ^(Z)if one brings you into bondage, if one devours you, if one takes from you, if one exalts himself, if one strikes you on the face. ²¹ To our shame ^(AA)I say that we were too weak for that! But ^(AB)in whatever anyone is bold—I speak foolishly—I am bold also.

Suffering for Christ

²² Are they ^(AC)Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? So am I. ²³ Are they ministers of Christ?—I speak as a fool—I am more: ^(AD)in labors more abundant, ^(AE)in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, ^(AF)in deaths often. ²⁴ From the Jews five times I received ^(AG)forty ^(AH)stripes minus one. ²⁵ Three times I was ^(AI)beaten with rods; ^(AJ)once I was stoned; three times I ^(AK)was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; ²⁶ in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, ^(AL)in perils of my own countrymen, ^(AM)in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; ²⁷ in weariness and toil, ^(AN)in sleeplessness often, ^(AO)in hunger and thirst, in ^(AP)fastings often, in cold and nakedness— ²⁸ besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: ^(AQ)my deep concern for all the churches. ^29 (AR)Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I do not burn with indignation?

³⁰ If I must boast, ^(AS)I will boast in the things which concern my ^[d]infirmity. ^31 (AT)The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, ^(AU)who is blessed forever, knows that I am not lying. ^32 (AV)In Damascus the governor, under Aretas the king, was guarding the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desiring to arrest me; ³³ but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped from his hands.
