Pacto de Dios con Salomón

(2 Cr. 7.11-22)

9 Cuando Salomón hubo acabado la obra de la casa de Jehová, y la casa real, y todo lo que Salomón quiso hacer, 2 Jehová apareció a Salomón la segunda vez, como le había aparecido en Gabaón.(A) 3 Y le dijo Jehová: Yo he oído tu oración y tu ruego que has hecho en mi presencia. Yo he santificado esta casa que tú has edificado, para poner mi nombre en ella para siempre; y en ella estarán mis ojos y mi corazón todos los días. 4 Y si tú anduvieres delante de mí como anduvo David tu padre, en integridad de corazón y en equidad, haciendo todas las cosas que yo te he mandado, y guardando mis estatutos y mis decretos, 5 yo afirmaré el trono de tu reino sobre Israel para siempre, como hablé a David tu padre, diciendo: No faltará varón de tu descendencia en el trono de Israel.(B) 6 Mas si obstinadamente os apartareis de mí vosotros y vuestros hijos, y no guardareis mis mandamientos y mis estatutos que yo he puesto delante de vosotros, sino que fuereis y sirviereis a dioses ajenos, y los adorareis; 7 yo cortaré a Israel de sobre la faz de la tierra que les he entregado; y esta casa que he santificado a mi nombre, yo la echaré de delante de mí, e Israel será por proverbio y refrán a todos los pueblos; 8 y esta casa, que estaba en estima, cualquiera que pase por ella se asombrará, y se burlará, y dirá: ¿Por qué ha hecho así Jehová a esta tierra y a esta casa?(C) 9 Y dirán: Por cuanto dejaron a Jehová su Dios, que había sacado a sus padres de tierra de Egipto, y echaron mano a dioses ajenos, y los adoraron y los sirvieron; por eso ha traído Jehová sobre ellos todo este mal.

10 Aconteció al cabo de veinte años, cuando Salomón ya había edificado las dos casas, la casa de Jehová y la casa real, 11 para las cuales Hiram rey de Tiro había traído a Salomón madera de cedro y de ciprés, y cuanto oro quiso, que el rey Salomón dio a Hiram veinte ciudades en tierra de Galilea. 12 Y salió Hiram de Tiro para ver las ciudades que Salomón le había dado, y no le gustaron. 13 Y dijo: ¿Qué ciudades son estas que me has dado, hermano? Y les puso por nombre, la tierra de Cabul, nombre que tiene hasta hoy. 14 E Hiram había enviado al rey ciento veinte talentos de oro.

15 Esta es la razón de la leva que el rey Salomón impuso para edificar la casa de Jehová, y su propia casa, y Milo, y el muro de Jerusalén, y Hazor, Meguido y Gezer: 16 Faraón el rey de Egipto había subido y tomado a Gezer, y la quemó, y dio muerte a los cananeos que habitaban la ciudad, y la dio en dote a su hija la mujer de Salomón. 17 Restauró, pues, Salomón a Gezer y a la baja Bet-horón, 18 a Baalat, y a Tadmor en tierra del desierto; 19 asimismo todas las ciudades donde Salomón tenía provisiones, y las ciudades de los carros, y las ciudades de la gente de a caballo, y todo lo que Salomón quiso edificar en Jerusalén, en el Líbano, y en toda la tierra de su señorío. 20 A todos los pueblos que quedaron de los amorreos, heteos, ferezeos, heveos y jebuseos, que no eran de los hijos de Israel; 21 a sus hijos que quedaron en la tierra después de ellos, que los hijos de Israel no pudieron acabar, hizo Salomón que sirviesen con tributo hasta hoy. 22 Mas a ninguno de los hijos de Israel impuso Salomón servicio, sino que eran hombres de guerra, o sus criados, sus príncipes, sus capitanes, comandantes de sus carros, o su gente de a caballo.

23 Y los que Salomón había hecho jefes y vigilantes sobre las obras eran quinientos cincuenta, los cuales estaban sobre el pueblo que trabajaba en aquella obra.

24 Y subió la hija de Faraón de la ciudad de David a su casa que Salomón le había edificado; entonces edificó él a Milo.

25 Y ofrecía Salomón tres veces cada año(D) holocaustos y sacrificios de paz sobre el altar que él edificó a Jehová, y quemaba incienso sobre el que estaba delante de Jehová, después que la casa fue terminada.

26 Hizo también el rey Salomón naves en Ezión-geber, que está junto a Elot en la ribera del Mar Rojo, en la tierra de Edom. 27 Y envió Hiram en ellas a sus siervos, marineros y diestros en el mar, con los siervos de Salomón, 28 los cuales fueron a Ofir y tomaron de allí oro, cuatrocientos veinte talentos, y lo trajeron al rey Salomón.

La reina de Sabá visita a Salomón

(2 Cr. 9.1-12)

10 Oyendo la reina de Sabá(E) la fama que Salomón había alcanzado por el nombre de Jehová, vino a probarle con preguntas difíciles. 2 Y vino a Jerusalén con un séquito muy grande, con camellos cargados de especias, y oro en gran abundancia, y piedras preciosas; y cuando vino a Salomón, le expuso todo lo que en su corazón tenía. 3 Y Salomón le contestó todas sus preguntas, y nada hubo que el rey no le contestase. 4 Y cuando la reina de Sabá vio toda la sabiduría de Salomón, y la casa que había edificado, 5 asimismo la comida de su mesa, las habitaciones de sus oficiales, el estado y los vestidos de los que le servían, sus maestresalas, y sus holocaustos que ofrecía en la casa de Jehová, se quedó asombrada.

6 Y dijo al rey: Verdad es lo que oí en mi tierra de tus cosas y de tu sabiduría; 7 pero yo no lo creía, hasta que he venido, y mis ojos han visto que ni aun se me dijo la mitad; es mayor tu sabiduría y bien, que la fama que yo había oído. 8 Bienaventurados tus hombres, dichosos estos tus siervos, que están continuamente delante de ti, y oyen tu sabiduría. 9 Jehová tu Dios sea bendito, que se agradó de ti para ponerte en el trono de Israel; porque Jehová ha amado siempre a Israel, te ha puesto por rey, para que hagas derecho y justicia. 10 Y dio ella al rey ciento veinte talentos de oro, y mucha especiería, y piedras preciosas; nunca vino tan gran cantidad de especias, como la reina de Sabá dio al rey Salomón.

11 La flota de Hiram que había traído el oro de Ofir, traía también de Ofir mucha madera de sándalo, y piedras preciosas. 12 Y de la madera de sándalo hizo el rey balaustres para la casa de Jehová y para las casas reales, arpas también y salterios para los cantores; nunca vino semejante madera de sándalo, ni se ha visto hasta hoy.

13 Y el rey Salomón dio a la reina de Sabá todo lo que ella quiso, y todo lo que pidió, además de lo que Salomón le dio. Y ella se volvió, y se fue a su tierra con sus criados.

Riquezas y fama de Salomón

(2 Cr. 9.13-24)

14 El peso del oro que Salomón tenía de renta cada año, era seiscientos sesenta y seis talentos de oro; 15 sin lo de los mercaderes, y lo de la contratación de especias, y lo de todos los reyes de Arabia, y de los principales de la tierra. 16 Hizo también el rey Salomón doscientos escudos grandes de oro batido; seiscientos siclos de oro gastó en cada escudo. 17 Asimismo hizo trescientos escudos de oro batido, en cada uno de los cuales gastó tres libras de oro; y el rey los puso en la casa del bosque del Líbano. 18 Hizo también el rey un gran trono de marfil, el cual cubrió de oro purísimo. 19 Seis gradas tenía el trono, y la parte alta era redonda por el respaldo; y a uno y otro lado tenía brazos cerca del asiento, junto a los cuales estaban colocados dos leones. 20 Estaban también doce leones puestos allí sobre las seis gradas, de un lado y de otro; en ningún otro reino se había hecho trono semejante. 21 Y todos los vasos de beber del rey Salomón eran de oro, y asimismo toda la vajilla de la casa del bosque del Líbano era de oro fino; nada de plata, porque en tiempo de Salomón no era apreciada. 22 Porque el rey tenía en el mar una flota de naves de Tarsis, con la flota de Hiram. Una vez cada tres años venía la flota de Tarsis, y traía oro, plata, marfil, monos y pavos reales.

23 Así excedía el rey Salomón a todos los reyes de la tierra en riquezas y en sabiduría. 24 Toda la tierra procuraba ver la cara de Salomón, para oír la sabiduría que Dios había puesto en su corazón. 25 Y todos le llevaban cada año sus presentes: alhajas de oro y de plata, vestidos, armas, especias aromáticas, caballos y mulos.

Salomón comercia en caballos y en carros

(2 Cr. 1.14-17; 9.25-28)

26 Y juntó Salomón carros y gente de a caballo; y tenía mil cuatrocientos carros, y doce mil jinetes,(F) los cuales puso en las ciudades de los carros, y con el rey en Jerusalén. 27 E hizo el rey que en Jerusalén la plata llegara a ser como piedras,(G) y los cedros como cabrahígos de la Sefela en abundancia. 28 Y traían de Egipto caballos y lienzos a Salomón;(H) porque la compañía de los mercaderes del rey compraba caballos y lienzos. 29 Y venía y salía de Egipto, el carro por seiscientas piezas de plata, y el caballo por ciento cincuenta; y así los adquirían por mano de ellos todos los reyes de los heteos, y de Siria.

Apostasía y dificultades de Salomón

11 Pero el rey Salomón amó, además de la hija de Faraón, a muchas mujeres extranjeras;(I) a las de Moab, a las de Amón, a las de Edom, a las de Sidón, y a las heteas; 2 gentes de las cuales Jehová había dicho a los hijos de Israel: No os llegaréis a ellas, ni ellas se llegarán a vosotros; porque ciertamente harán inclinar vuestros corazones tras sus dioses.(J) A estas, pues, se juntó Salomón con amor. 3 Y tuvo setecientas mujeres reinas y trescientas concubinas; y sus mujeres desviaron su corazón. 4 Y cuando Salomón era ya viejo, sus mujeres inclinaron su corazón tras dioses ajenos, y su corazón no era perfecto con Jehová su Dios, como el corazón de su padre David. 5 Porque Salomón siguió a Astoret, diosa de los sidonios, y a Milcom, ídolo abominable de los amonitas. 6 E hizo Salomón lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, y no siguió cumplidamente a Jehová como David su padre. 7 Entonces edificó Salomón un lugar alto a Quemos, ídolo abominable de Moab, en el monte que está enfrente de Jerusalén, y a Moloc, ídolo abominable de los hijos de Amón. 8 Así hizo para todas sus mujeres extranjeras, las cuales quemaban incienso y ofrecían sacrificios a sus dioses.

9 Y se enojó Jehová contra Salomón, por cuanto su corazón se había apartado de Jehová Dios de Israel, que se le había aparecido dos veces, 10 y le había mandado acerca de esto, que no siguiese a dioses ajenos; mas él no guardó lo que le mandó Jehová. 11 Y dijo Jehová a Salomón: Por cuanto ha habido esto en ti, y no has guardado mi pacto y mis estatutos que yo te mandé, romperé de ti el reino, y lo entregaré a tu siervo. 12 Sin embargo, no lo haré en tus días, por amor a David tu padre; lo romperé de la mano de tu hijo. 13 Pero no romperé todo el reino, sino que daré una tribu a tu hijo, por amor a David mi siervo, y por amor a Jerusalén, la cual yo he elegido.

14 Y Jehová suscitó un adversario a Salomón: Hadad edomita, de sangre real, el cual estaba en Edom. 15 Porque cuando David estaba en Edom, y subió Joab el general del ejército a enterrar los muertos, y mató a todos los varones de Edom 16 (porque seis meses habitó allí Joab, y todo Israel, hasta que hubo acabado con todo el sexo masculino en Edom), 17 Hadad huyó, y con él algunos varones edomitas de los siervos de su padre, y se fue a Egipto; era entonces Hadad muchacho pequeño. 18 Y se levantaron de Madián, y vinieron a Parán; y tomando consigo hombres de Parán, vinieron a Egipto, a Faraón rey de Egipto, el cual les dio casa y les señaló alimentos, y aun les dio tierra. 19 Y halló Hadad gran favor delante de Faraón, el cual le dio por mujer la hermana de su esposa, la hermana de la reina Tahpenes. 20 Y la hermana de Tahpenes le dio a luz su hijo Genubat, al cual destetó Tahpenes en casa de Faraón; y estaba Genubat en casa de Faraón entre los hijos de Faraón. 21 Y oyendo Hadad en Egipto que David había dormido con sus padres, y que era muerto Joab general del ejército, Hadad dijo a Faraón: Déjame ir a mi tierra. 22 Faraón le respondió: ¿Por qué? ¿Qué te falta conmigo, que procuras irte a tu tierra? Él respondió: Nada; con todo, te ruego que me dejes ir.

23 Dios también levantó por adversario contra Salomón a Rezón hijo de Eliada, el cual había huido de su amo Hadad-ezer, rey de Soba. 24 Y había juntado gente contra él, y se había hecho capitán de una compañía, cuando David deshizo a los de Soba. Después fueron a Damasco y habitaron allí, y le hicieron rey en Damasco. 25 Y fue adversario de Israel todos los días de Salomón; y fue otro mal con el de Hadad, porque aborreció a Israel, y reinó sobre Siria.

26 También Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, efrateo de Sereda, siervo de Salomón, cuya madre se llamaba Zerúa, la cual era viuda, alzó su mano contra el rey. 27 La causa por la cual este alzó su mano contra el rey fue esta: Salomón, edificando a Milo, cerró el portillo de la ciudad de David su padre. 28 Y este varón Jeroboam era valiente y esforzado; y viendo Salomón al joven que era hombre activo, le encomendó todo el cargo de la casa de José. 29 Aconteció, pues, en aquel tiempo, que saliendo Jeroboam de Jerusalén, le encontró en el camino el profeta Ahías silonita, y este estaba cubierto con una capa nueva; y estaban ellos dos solos en el campo. 30 Y tomando Ahías la capa nueva que tenía sobre sí, la rompió en doce pedazos, 31 y dijo a Jeroboam: Toma para ti los diez pedazos; porque así dijo Jehová Dios de Israel: He aquí que yo rompo el reino de la mano de Salomón, y a ti te daré diez tribus; 32 y él tendrá una tribu por amor a David mi siervo, y por amor a Jerusalén, ciudad que yo he elegido de todas las tribus de Israel; 33 por cuanto me han dejado, y han adorado a Astoret diosa de los sidonios, a Quemos dios de Moab, y a Moloc dios de los hijos de Amón; y no han andado en mis caminos para hacer lo recto delante de mis ojos, y mis estatutos y mis decretos, como hizo David su padre. 34 Pero no quitaré nada del reino de sus manos, sino que lo retendré por rey todos los días de su vida, por amor a David mi siervo, al cual yo elegí, y quien guardó mis mandamientos y mis estatutos. 35 Pero quitaré el reino de la mano de su hijo, y lo daré a ti, las diez tribus. 36 Y a su hijo daré una tribu, para que mi siervo David tenga lámpara todos los días delante de mí en Jerusalén, ciudad que yo me elegí para poner en ella mi nombre. 37 Yo, pues, te tomaré a ti, y tú reinarás en todas las cosas que deseare tu alma, y serás rey sobre Israel. 38 Y si prestares oído a todas las cosas que te mandare, y anduvieres en mis caminos, e hicieres lo recto delante de mis ojos, guardando mis estatutos y mis mandamientos, como hizo David mi siervo, yo estaré contigo y te edificaré casa firme, como la edifiqué a David, y yo te entregaré a Israel. 39 Y yo afligiré a la descendencia de David a causa de esto, mas no para siempre. 40 Por esto Salomón procuró matar a Jeroboam, pero Jeroboam se levantó y huyó a Egipto, a Sisac rey de Egipto, y estuvo en Egipto hasta la muerte de Salomón.

Muerte de Salomón

(2 Cr. 9.29-31)

41 Los demás hechos de Salomón, y todo lo que hizo, y su sabiduría, ¿no está escrito en el libro de los hechos de Salomón? 42 Los días que Salomón reinó en Jerusalén sobre todo Israel fueron cuarenta años. 43 Y durmió Salomón con sus padres, y fue sepultado en la ciudad de su padre David; y reinó en su lugar Roboam su hijo.

God’s Promise and Warning

9 (A)Now it came about when Solomon had finished building the house of the Lord and (B)the king’s house, and (C)all [a]that Solomon desired to do, 2 that (D)the Lord appeared to Solomon a second time, as He had appeared to him at Gibeon. 3 And the Lord said to him, “(E)I have heard your prayer and your plea which you have offered before Me; I have consecrated this house which you have built, (F)by putting My name there forever, and (G)My eyes and My heart will be there [b]always. 4 As for you, (H)if you walk before Me as your father David walked, in integrity of heart and honesty, acting in accordance with everything that I have commanded you, and if you keep My statutes and My ordinances, 5 then (I)I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever, just as I [c]promised to your father David, saying, ‘[d]You shall not be deprived of a man on the throne of Israel.’

6 “(J)But if you or your sons indeed turn away from following Me, and do not keep My commandments and My statutes which I have placed before you, but you go and serve other gods and worship them, 7 (K)then I will cut Israel off from the land which I have given them, and (L)the house which I have consecrated for My name, I will [e]expel from My sight. So (M)Israel will become a saying and an object of derision among all peoples. 8 And this house will become (N)a heap of ruins; everyone who passes by it will be appalled and [f]hiss and say, ‘(O)Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and this house?’ 9 And they will say, ‘(P)Because they abandoned the Lord their God, who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and they [g]adopted other gods and worshiped and served them, for that reason the Lord has brought all this adversity on them.’”

Cities Given to Hiram

10 (Q)Now it came about (R)at the end of twenty years in which Solomon had built the two houses, the house of the Lord and the king’s house 11 (Hiram king of Tyre had supplied Solomon with cedar and juniper timber and gold, [h]satisfying all his desire), that King Solomon then gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee. 12 So Hiram left Tyre to see the cities which Solomon had given him, and they [i]did not please him. 13 And he said, “What are these cities which you have given me, my brother?” So [j]they have been called the land of [k](S)Cabul to this day. 14 (T)And Hiram sent to the king [l]120 talents of gold.

15 Now this is the account of the forced labor which King Solomon (U)conscripted to build the house of the Lord, his own house, the [m](V)Millo, the wall of Jerusalem, (W)Hazor, (X)Megiddo, and (Y)Gezer. 16 For Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up and overthrown Gezer and burned it with fire, and killed the (Z)Canaanites who lived in the city; and he had (AA)given it as a dowry to his daughter, Solomon’s wife. 17 So Solomon rebuilt Gezer and the lower (AB)Beth-horon, 18 and (AC)Baalath and Tamar in the wilderness, in the land of Judah, 19 and all the storage cities which Solomon had, that is, (AD)the cities for [n]his chariots and the cities for [o](AE)his horsemen, and [p](AF)everything that it pleased Solomon to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and in all the land [q]under his rule. 20 As for all the people who were left of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, who were not of the sons of Israel, 21 (AG)their descendants who were left after them in the land, (AH)whom the sons of Israel were unable to completely eliminate, (AI)from them Solomon conscripted (AJ)forced laborers, as they are to this day. 22 But Solomon (AK)did not make slaves of the sons of Israel; for they were men of war, his servants, his commanders, his charioteers, his chariot commanders, and his horsemen.

23 These were the [r](AL)chief officers who were in charge of Solomon’s work, 550, (AM)who ruled over the people doing the work.

24 As soon as (AN)Pharaoh’s daughter came up from the city of David to her house which Solomon had built for her, (AO)he then built the Millo.

25 Now (AP)three times a year Solomon offered burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar which he had built for the Lord, burning incense with them on the altar which was before the Lord. So he finished the house.

26 King Solomon also built a (AQ)fleet of ships in (AR)Ezion-geber, which is near Eloth on the shore of the [s]Red Sea, in the land of Edom. 27 (AS)And Hiram sent his servants with the fleet, sailors who knew the sea, along with the servants of Solomon. 28 And they went to (AT)Ophir and received [t]420 talents of gold from there, and brought it to King Solomon.

The Queen of Sheba

10 (AU)Now when the (AV)queen of (AW)Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon in relation to the name of the Lord, she came (AX)to test him with riddles. 2 So she came to Jerusalem with a very large entourage, with camels (AY)carrying balsam oil and a very large quantity of gold and precious stones. When she came to Solomon, she spoke to him about everything that was in her heart. 3 And Solomon [u]answered all her questions; nothing was concealed from the king which he did not explain to her. 4 When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon, and the house that he had built, 5 and the food of his table, the seating of his servants, the service of his waiters and their attire, his cupbearers, and his burnt offerings which he offered at the house of the Lord, [v]she was breathless. 6 Then she said to the king, “It was a true [w]story that I heard in my own land about your words and your wisdom. 7 But I did not believe the [x]stories until I came and my own eyes saw it all. And behold, the half of it was not reported to me. You have exceeded in wisdom and prosperity the report which I heard. 8 (AZ)Blessed are your men, and blessed are these servants of yours who stand before you continually and hear your wisdom! 9 (BA)Blessed be the Lord your God who delighted in you to put you on the throne of Israel; (BB)because the Lord loves Israel forever, He made you king, (BC)to do justice and righteousness.” 10 Then (BD)she gave the king [y]120 talents of gold, and a very large amount of balsam oil and precious stones. Never again did such a large quantity of balsam oil come in as that which the queen of Sheba gave King Solomon.

11 (BE)And the ships of Hiram as well, which brought gold from Ophir, brought in from Ophir a very great number of almug trees and precious stones. 12 (BF)The king made from the almug trees supports for the house of the Lord and for the king’s house, and lyres and harps for the singers; such almug trees have not come in again, nor have they been seen to this day.

13 And King Solomon granted the queen of Sheba everything she desired, whatever she requested, besides what he gave her in proportion to [z]his royal bounty. Then she [aa]departed and went to her own land [ab]together with her servants.

Wealth, Splendor, and Wisdom

14 (BG)Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was [ac]666 talents of gold, 15 besides that from the traders, and the [ad]wares of the merchants and all the kings of the (BH)Arabs and the governors of the country. 16 (BI)King Solomon made two hundred large shields of beaten gold, [ae]using six hundred shekels of gold on each large shield. 17 And he made (BJ)three hundred small shields of beaten gold, [af]using [ag]three minas of gold on each shield; and (BK)the king put them in the house of the timber of Lebanon. 18 Moreover, the king made a large throne of (BL)ivory and overlaid it with fine gold. 19 There were six steps to the throne and a round top to the throne at its back, and [ah]armrests [ai]on each side of the seat, and two lions standing beside the [aj]armrests. 20 Twelve lions were standing there on the six steps on the one side and on the other; nothing like it was made for [ak]any other kingdom. 21 Now all King Solomon’s drinking utensils were of gold, and all the utensils of the house of the timber of Lebanon were of pure gold. None was of silver; it was not considered as amounting to anything in the days of Solomon. 22 For (BM)the king had the ships of Tarshish at sea with Hiram’s ships; once every three years the ships of Tarshish would come carrying gold and silver, ivory, monkeys, and peacocks.

23 (BN)So King Solomon became greater than all the kings of the earth in wealth and wisdom. 24 And all the earth was seeking the [al]attention of Solomon, (BO)to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart. 25 And (BP)they were bringing, everyone, [am]a gift: articles of silver and gold, garments, weapons, balsam oil, horses, and mules, so much year by year.

26 (BQ)Now Solomon gathered chariots and horsemen; and he had 1,400 chariots and twelve thousand horsemen, and he [an]stationed them in the (BR)chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem. 27 (BS)And the king made silver as common as stones in Jerusalem, and he made cedars as plentiful as sycamore trees that are in the [ao]lowland. 28 (BT)Also Solomon’s import of horses was from Egypt and Kue, and the king’s merchants acquired them from Kue for a price. 29 A chariot [ap]was imported from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for 150; and [aq]by the same means they exported them (BU)to all the kings of the Hittites and to the kings of the Arameans.

Solomon Turns from God

11 Now (BV)King Solomon loved many foreign women along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, 2 from the nations of which the Lord had said to the sons of Israel, “(BW)You shall not [ar]associate with them, nor shall they [as]associate with you; they will certainly turn your heart away [at]to follow their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love. 3 (BX)He had seven hundred wives, who were [au]princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned his heart away. 4 For when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away [av]to follow other gods; and (BY)his heart was not [aw]wholly devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of his father David had been. 5 For Solomon became a follower of (BZ)Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and of [ax](CA)Milcom the abhorrent idol of the Ammonites. 6 So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and did not follow the Lord fully, as his father David had done. 7 Then Solomon built a high place for (CB)Chemosh, the abhorrent idol of Moab, on the mountain that is [ay]east of Jerusalem, and for (CC)Molech, the abhorrent idol of the sons of Ammon. 8 He also did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.

9 Now (CD)the Lord was angry with Solomon (CE)because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, (CF)who had appeared to him twice, 10 and (CG)had commanded him regarding this thing, that he was not to follow other gods; but he did not comply with what the Lord had commanded. 11 So the Lord said to Solomon, “Since [az]you have done this, and you have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, (CH)I will certainly tear the kingdom away from you, and will give it to your servant. 12 However, I will not do it in your days, only for the sake of your father David; but I will tear it away from the hand of your son. 13 Yet (CI)I will not tear away all the kingdom, but (CJ)I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of My servant David, and (CK)for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”

God Raises Adversaries

14 Then the Lord raised up an adversary against Solomon, Hadad the Edomite; he was of the [ba]royal line in Edom. 15 For it came about, (CL)when David was in Edom and Joab the commander of the army had gone up to bury those killed in battle, and had (CM)struck and killed every male in Edom 16 (for Joab and all Israel stayed there for six months, until he had eliminated every male in Edom), 17 that Hadad fled [bb]to Egypt, he and certain Edomites of his father’s servants with him, while Hadad was a young boy. 18 They set out from Midian and came to (CN)Paran; and they took men with them from Paran and came to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave him a house and assigned him food and gave him land. 19 Now Hadad found great favor in the sight of Pharaoh, so that he gave him in marriage the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen. 20 And the sister of Tahpenes gave birth to his son Genubath, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh’s house; and Genubath was in Pharaoh’s house among the sons of Pharaoh. 21 But (CO)when Hadad heard in Egypt that David [bc]lay down with his fathers and that Joab the commander of the army was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, “Let me go, so that I may go to my own country.” 22 However, Pharaoh said to him, “But what have you lacked with me that you are here, requesting to go to your own country?” And he answered, “Nothing; nevertheless you must let me go.”

23 (CP)God also raised up another adversary against him, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his master (CQ)Hadadezer, king of Zobah. 24 And he gathered men to himself and became leader of a marauding band, (CR)after David killed those of Zobah; and they went to Damascus and stayed [bd]there, and reigned in Damascus. 25 So he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, along with the harm that Hadad inflicted; and he felt disgust for Israel and reigned over Aram.

26 Then (CS)Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, Solomon’s servant, whose mother’s name was Zeruah, a widow, (CT)also [be]rebelled against the king. 27 Now this was the reason why he [bf]rebelled against the king: (CU)Solomon built the [bg]Millo, and closed up the breach of the city of his father David. 28 Now the man Jeroboam was a valiant warrior, and when (CV)Solomon saw that the young man was [bh]industrious, he appointed him over all the [bi]forced labor of the house of Joseph. 29 And it came about at that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that (CW)the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him on the road. Now [bj]Ahijah had clothed himself with a new cloak; and both of them were alone in the field. 30 Then (CX)Ahijah took hold of the new cloak which was on him and tore it into twelve pieces. 31 And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces; for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘Behold, (CY)I am going to tear the kingdom away from the hand of Solomon and give you ten tribes 32 ((CZ)but he shall have one tribe, for the sake of My servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, (DA)the city which I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel), 33 because they have abandoned Me, and (DB)have worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, (DC)Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the sons of Ammon; and they have not walked in My ways, doing what is right in My sight and keeping My statutes and My ordinances, as his father David did. 34 Nevertheless I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand, but I will make him ruler all the days of his life, for the sake of My servant David whom I chose, who kept My commandments and My statutes; 35 but (DD)I will take the kingdom from his son’s hand and give it to you; that is, ten tribes. 36 But (DE)to his son I will give one tribe, (DF)so that My servant David may always have a lamp before Me in Jerusalem, (DG)the city where I have chosen for Myself to put My name. 37 However I will take you, and you shall reign over all that [bk]you desire, and you shall be king over Israel. 38 Then it shall be, that if you listen to all that I command you and walk in My ways, and do what is right in My sight by keeping My statutes and My commandments, as My servant David did, then (DH)I will be with you and (DI)build you an enduring house as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you. 39 So I will oppress the [bl]descendants of David for this, but not always.’” 40 Solomon sought therefore to put Jeroboam to death; but Jeroboam set out and fled to Egypt to (DJ)Shishak king of Egypt, and he was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.

The Death of Solomon

41 (DK)Now the rest of the acts of Solomon and whatever he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the Book of the Acts of Solomon? 42 So (DL)the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years. 43 Then Solomon [bm](DM)lay down with his fathers and was buried in the city of his father David, and his son (DN)Rehoboam reigned in his place.
