⁹ And she wrote in the letters, “Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth at the head of the people. ¹⁰ And set two ^(A)worthless men opposite him, and let them bring a charge against him, saying, ^(B)‘You have cursed^[a] God and the king.’ Then take him out and stone him to death.” ¹¹ And the men of his city, ^(C)the elders and the leaders who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent word to them. As it was written in the letters that she had sent to them, ^12 (D)they proclaimed a fast and set Naboth at the head of the people.

^9 (A)In the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, ^(B)in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem ^(C)proclaimed a fast before the Lord.

^5 (A)And the people of Nineveh believed God. ^(B)They called for a fast and ^(C)put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.

Fasting and Prayer for Protection

^21 (A)Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river ^(B)Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, ^(C)to seek from him a safe journey for ourselves, our children, and all our goods.

³ Then Jehoshaphat was afraid and set his face ^(A)to seek the Lord, and ^(B)proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.

¹⁶ David therefore sought God on behalf of the child. And David ^(A)fasted and went in ^(B)and lay all night on the ground.
