Asa Reigns in Judah(A)

In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king over Judah. 10 And he reigned forty-one years in Jerusalem. His grandmother’s name was Maachah the granddaughter of Abishalom. 11 (B)Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as did his father David. 12 (C)And he banished the [a]perverted persons from the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.

Nadab Reigns in Israel

25 Now (A)Nadab the son of Jeroboam became king over Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years. 26 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of his father, and in (B)his sin by which he had made Israel sin.

27 (C)Then Baasha the son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, conspired against him. And Baasha killed him at (D)Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines, while Nadab and all Israel laid siege to Gibbethon. 28 Baasha killed him in the third year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned in his place.

29 And it was so, when he became king, that he killed all the house of Jeroboam. He did not leave to Jeroboam anyone that breathed, until he had destroyed him, according to (A)the word of the Lord which He had spoken by His servant Ahijah the Shilonite, 30 (B)because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he had sinned and by which he had made Israel sin, because of his provocation with which he had provoked the Lord God of Israel to anger.

And he built fortified cities in Judah, for the land had rest; he had no war in those years, because the Lord had given him (A)rest. Therefore he said to Judah, “Let us build these cities and make walls around them, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us, because we have sought the Lord our God; we have sought Him, and He has given us rest on every side.” So they built and prospered. And Asa had an army of three hundred thousand from Judah who carried [a]shields and spears, and from Benjamin two hundred and eighty thousand men who carried shields and drew (B)bows; all these were mighty men of (C)valor.

(D)Then Zerah the Ethiopian came out against them with an army of a million men and three hundred chariots, and he came to (E)Mareshah. 10 So Asa went out against him, and they set the troops in battle array in the Valley of Zephathah at Mareshah. 11 And Asa (F)cried out to the Lord his God, and said, “Lord, it is (G)nothing for You to help, whether with many or with those who have no power; help us, O Lord our God, for we rest on You, and (H)in Your name we go against this multitude. O Lord, You are our God; do not let man prevail against You!”

12 So the Lord (I)struck the Ethiopians before Asa and Judah, and the Ethiopians fled. 13 And Asa and the people who were with him pursued them to (J)Gerar. So the Ethiopians were overthrown, and they could not recover, for they were broken before the Lord and His army. And they carried away very much [b]spoil. 14 Then they defeated all the cities around Gerar, for (K)the fear of the Lord came upon them; and they plundered all the cities, for there was exceedingly much [c]spoil in them. 15 They also [d]attacked the livestock enclosures, and carried off sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.

The Reforms of Asa

15 Now (L)the Spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded. And he went out [e]to meet Asa, and said to him: “Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin. (M)The Lord is with you while you are with Him. (N)If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but (O)if you forsake Him, He will forsake you. (P)For a long time Israel has been without the true God, without a (Q)teaching priest, and without (R)law; but (S)when in their trouble they turned to the Lord God of Israel, and sought Him, He was found by them. And in those times there was no peace to the one who went out, nor to the one who came in, but great turmoil was on all the inhabitants of the lands. (T)So nation was [f]destroyed by nation, and city by city, for God troubled them with every adversity. But you, be strong and do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded!”

And when Asa heard these words and the prophecy of [a]Oded the prophet, he took courage, and removed the abominable idols from all the land of Judah and Benjamin and from the cities (A)which he had taken in the mountains of Ephraim; and he restored the altar of the Lord that was before the vestibule of the Lord. Then he gathered all Judah and Benjamin, and (B)those who dwelt with them from Ephraim, Manasseh, and Simeon, for they came over to him in great numbers from Israel when they saw that the Lord his God was with him.

10 So they gathered together at Jerusalem in the third month, in the fifteenth year of the reign of Asa. 11 (C)And they offered to the Lord [b]at that time seven hundred bulls and seven thousand sheep from the [c]spoil they had brought. 12 Then they (D)entered into a covenant to seek the Lord God of their fathers with all their heart and with all their soul; 13 (E)and whoever would not seek the Lord God of Israel (F)was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. 14 Then they took an oath before the Lord with a loud voice, with shouting and trumpets and rams’ horns. 15 And all Judah rejoiced at the oath, for they had sworn with all their heart and (G)sought Him with all their soul; and He was found by them, and the Lord gave them (H)rest all around.

16 Also he removed (I)Maachah, the [d]mother of Asa the king, from being queen mother, because she had made an obscene image of [e]Asherah; and Asa cut down her obscene image, then crushed and burned it by the Brook Kidron. 17 But (J)the [f]high places were not removed from Israel. Nevertheless the heart of Asa was loyal all his days.

18 He also brought into the house of God the things that his father had dedicated and that he himself had dedicated: silver and gold and utensils. 19 And there was no war until the thirty-fifth year of the reign of Asa.

Asa’s Treaty with Syria(A)

18 Then Asa took all the silver and gold that was left in the treasuries of the house of the Lord and the treasuries of the king’s house, and delivered them into the hand of his servants. And King Asa sent them to (A)Ben-Hadad the son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion, king of Syria, who dwelt in (B)Damascus, saying, 19 Let there be a treaty between you and me, as there was between my father and your father. See, I have sent you a present of silver and gold. Come and break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel, so that he will withdraw from me.”

20 So Ben-Hadad heeded King Asa, and (C)sent the captains of his armies against the cities of Israel. He attacked (D)Ijon, (E)Dan, (F)Abel Beth Maachah, and all Chinneroth, with all the land of Naphtali. 21 Now it happened, when Baasha heard it, that he stopped building Ramah, and remained in (G)Tirzah.

22 (H)Then King Asa made a proclamation throughout all Judah; none was exempted. And they took away the stones and timber of Ramah, which Baasha had used for building; and with them King Asa built (I)Geba of Benjamin, and (J)Mizpah.

Hanani’s Message to Asa

And at that time (A)Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said to him: (B)“Because you have relied on the king of Syria, and have not relied on the Lord your God, therefore the army of the king of Syria has escaped from your hand. Were (C)the Ethiopians and (D)the Lubim not a huge army with very many chariots and horsemen? Yet, because you relied on the Lord, He delivered them into your (E)hand. (F)For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him. In this (G)you have done foolishly; therefore from now on (H)you shall have wars.” 10 Then Asa was angry with the seer, and (I)put him in prison, for he was enraged at him because of this. And Asa oppressed some of the people at that time.

The Reigns of Elah, Zimri, Omri, and Ahab

16 Then the word of the Lord came to (A)Jehu the son of (B)Hanani, against (C)Baasha, saying: (D)“Inasmuch as I lifted you out of the dust and made you ruler over My people Israel, and (E)you have walked in the way of Jeroboam, and have made My people Israel sin, to provoke Me to anger with their sins, surely I will (F)take[a] away the posterity of Baasha and the posterity of his house, and I will make your house like (G)the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat. The dogs shall eat (H)whoever belongs to Baasha and dies in the city, and the birds of the air shall eat whoever dies in the fields.”

Now the rest of the acts of Baasha, what he did, and his might, (I)are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? So Baasha [b]rested with his fathers and was buried in (J)Tirzah. Then Elah his son reigned in his place.

And also the word of the Lord came by the prophet (K)Jehu the son of Hanani against Baasha and his house, because of all the evil that he did in the sight of the Lord in provoking Him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of Jeroboam, and because (L)he killed them.

Elah Reigns in Israel

In the twenty-sixth year of Asa king of Judah, Elah the son of Baasha became king over Israel, and reigned two years in Tirzah. (M)Now his servant Zimri, commander of half his chariots, conspired against him as he was in Tirzah drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza, (N)steward[c] of his house in Tirzah. 10 And Zimri went in and struck him and killed him in the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned in his place.

11 Then it came to pass, when he began to reign, as soon as he was seated on his throne, that he killed all the household of Baasha; he (A)did not leave him one male, neither of his relatives nor of his friends. 12 Thus Zimri destroyed all the household of Baasha, (B)according to the word of the Lord, which He spoke against Baasha by Jehu the prophet, 13 for all the sins of Baasha and the sins of Elah his son, by which they had sinned and by which they had made Israel sin, in provoking the Lord God of Israel to anger (C)with their [a]idols.

Zimri Reigns in Israel

15 In the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, Zimri had reigned in Tirzah seven days. And the people were encamped (A)against Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines. 16 Now the people who were encamped heard it said, “Zimri has conspired and also has killed the king.” So all Israel made Omri, the commander of the army, king over Israel that day in the camp. 17 Then Omri and all Israel with him went up from Gibbethon, and they besieged Tirzah. 18 And it happened, when Zimri saw that the city was [a]taken, that he went into the citadel of the king’s house and burned the king’s house [b]down upon himself with fire, and died, 19 because of the sins which he had committed in doing evil in the sight of the Lord, (B)in walking in the (C)way of Jeroboam, and in his sin which he had committed to make Israel sin.
