Hiram envía embajadores a David

(2 S. 5.11-12)

14 Hiram rey de Tiro envió a David embajadores, y madera de cedro, y albañiles y carpinteros, para que le edificasen una casa. 2 Y entendió David que Jehová lo había confirmado como rey sobre Israel, y que había exaltado su reino sobre su pueblo Israel.

Hijos de David nacidos en Jerusalén

(2 S. 5.13-16; 1 Cr. 3.5-9)

3 Entonces David tomó también mujeres en Jerusalén, y engendró David más hijos e hijas. 4 Y estos son los nombres de los que le nacieron en Jerusalén: Samúa, Sobab, Natán, Salomón, 5 Ibhar, Elisúa, Elpelet, 6 Noga, Nefeg, Jafía, 7 Elisama, Beeliada y Elifelet.

David derrota a los filisteos

(2 S. 5.17-25)

8 Oyendo los filisteos que David había sido ungido rey sobre todo Israel, subieron todos los filisteos en busca de David. Y cuando David lo oyó, salió contra ellos. 9 Y vinieron los filisteos, y se extendieron por el valle de Refaim. 10 Entonces David consultó a Dios, diciendo: ¿Subiré contra los filisteos? ¿Los entregarás en mi mano? Y Jehová le dijo: Sube, porque yo los entregaré en tus manos. 11 Subieron, pues, a Baal-perazim, y allí los derrotó David. Dijo luego David: Dios rompió mis enemigos por mi mano, como se rompen las aguas. Por esto llamaron el nombre de aquel lugar Baal-perazim.[a] 12 Y dejaron allí sus dioses, y David dijo que los quemasen. 13 Y volviendo los filisteos a extenderse por el valle, 14 David volvió a consultar a Dios, y Dios le dijo: No subas tras ellos, sino rodéalos, para venir a ellos por delante de las balsameras.

15 Y así que oigas venir un estruendo por las copas de las balsameras, sal luego a la batalla, porque Dios saldrá delante de ti y herirá el ejército de los filisteos. 16 Hizo, pues, David como Dios le mandó, y derrotaron al ejército de los filisteos desde Gabaón hasta Gezer. 17 Y la fama de David fue divulgada por todas aquellas tierras; y Jehová puso el temor de David sobre todas las naciones.

David trae el arca a Jerusalén

(2 S. 6.12-23)

15 Hizo David también casas para sí en la ciudad de David, y arregló un lugar para el arca de Dios, y le levantó una tienda. 2 Entonces dijo David: El arca de Dios no debe ser llevada sino por los levitas; porque a ellos ha elegido Jehová para que lleven el arca de Jehová, y le sirvan perpetuamente.(A) 3 Y congregó David a todo Israel en Jerusalén, para que pasasen el arca de Jehová a su lugar, el cual le había él preparado. 4 Reunió también David a los hijos de Aarón y a los levitas; 5 de los hijos de Coat, Uriel el principal, y sus hermanos, ciento veinte. 6 De los hijos de Merari, Asaías el principal, y sus hermanos, doscientos veinte. 7 De los hijos de Gersón, Joel el principal, y sus hermanos, ciento treinta. 8 De los hijos de Elizafán, Semaías el principal, y sus hermanos, doscientos. 9 De los hijos de Hebrón, Eliel el principal, y sus hermanos, ochenta. 10 De los hijos de Uziel, Aminadab el principal, y sus hermanos, ciento doce. 11 Y llamó David a los sacerdotes Sadoc y Abiatar, y a los levitas Uriel, Asaías, Joel, Semaías, Eliel y Aminadab, 12 y les dijo: Vosotros que sois los principales padres de las familias de los levitas, santificaos, vosotros y vuestros hermanos, y pasad el arca de Jehová Dios de Israel al lugar que le he preparado; 13 pues por no haberlo hecho así vosotros la primera vez, Jehová nuestro Dios nos quebrantó, por cuanto no le buscamos según su ordenanza. 14 Así los sacerdotes y los levitas se santificaron para traer el arca de Jehová Dios de Israel. 15 Y los hijos de los levitas trajeron el arca de Dios puesta sobre sus hombros en las barras, como lo había mandado Moisés, conforme a la palabra de Jehová.(B)

16 Asimismo dijo David a los principales de los levitas, que designasen de sus hermanos a cantores con instrumentos de música, con salterios y arpas y címbalos, que resonasen y alzasen la voz con alegría. 17 Y los levitas designaron a Hemán hijo de Joel; y de sus hermanos, a Asaf hijo de Berequías; y de los hijos de Merari y de sus hermanos, a Etán hijo de Cusaías. 18 Y con ellos a sus hermanos del segundo orden, a Zacarías, Jaaziel, Semiramot, Jehiel, Uni, Eliab, Benaía, Maasías, Matatías, Elifelehu, Micnías, Obed-edom y Jeiel, los porteros. 19 Así Hemán, Asaf y Etán, que eran cantores, sonaban címbalos de bronce. 20 Y Zacarías, Aziel, Semiramot, Jehiel, Uni, Eliab, Maasías y Benaía, con salterios sobre Alamot. 21 Matatías, Elifelehu, Micnías, Obed-edom, Jeiel y Azazías tenían arpas afinadas en la octava para dirigir. 22 Y Quenanías, principal de los levitas en la música, fue puesto para dirigir el canto, porque era entendido en ello. 23 Berequías y Elcana eran porteros del arca. 24 Y Sebanías, Josafat, Natanael, Amasai, Zacarías, Benaía y Eliezer, sacerdotes, tocaban las trompetas delante del arca de Dios; Obed-edom y Jehías eran también porteros del arca.

25 David, pues, y los ancianos de Israel y los capitanes de millares, fueron a traer el arca del pacto de Jehová, de casa de Obed-edom, con alegría. 26 Y ayudando Dios a los levitas que llevaban el arca del pacto de Jehová, sacrificaron siete novillos y siete carneros. 27 Y David iba vestido de lino fino, y también todos los levitas que llevaban el arca, y asimismo los cantores; y Quenanías era maestro de canto entre los cantores. Llevaba también David sobre sí un efod de lino. 28 De esta manera llevaba todo Israel el arca del pacto de Jehová, con júbilo y sonido de bocinas y trompetas y címbalos, y al son de salterios y arpas. 29 Pero cuando el arca del pacto de Jehová llegó a la ciudad de David, Mical, hija de Saúl, mirando por una ventana, vio al rey David que saltaba y danzaba; y lo menospreció en su corazón.

16 Así trajeron el arca de Dios, y la pusieron en medio de la tienda que David había levantado para ella; y ofrecieron holocaustos y sacrificios de paz delante de Dios. 2 Y cuando David acabó de ofrecer el holocausto y los sacrificios de paz, bendijo al pueblo en el nombre de Jehová. 3 Y repartió a todo Israel, así a hombres como a mujeres, a cada uno una torta de pan, una pieza de carne, y una torta de pasas.

4 Y puso delante del arca de Jehová ministros de los levitas, para que recordasen y confesasen y loasen a Jehová Dios de Israel: 5 Asaf el primero; el segundo después de él, Zacarías; Jeiel, Semiramot, Jehiel, Matatías, Eliab, Benaía, Obed-edom y Jeiel, con sus instrumentos de salterios y arpas; pero Asaf sonaba los címbalos. 6 También los sacerdotes Benaía y Jahaziel sonaban continuamente las trompetas delante del arca del pacto de Dios.

Salmo de acción de gracias de David

7 Entonces, en aquel día, David comenzó a aclamar a Jehová por mano de Asaf y de sus hermanos:

8 Alabad a Jehová, invocad su nombre,

Dad a conocer en los pueblos sus obras.

9 Cantad a él, cantadle salmos;

Hablad de todas sus maravillas.

10 Gloriaos en su santo nombre;

Alégrese el corazón de los que buscan a Jehová.

11 Buscad a Jehová y su poder;

Buscad su rostro continuamente.

12 Haced memoria de las maravillas que ha hecho,

De sus prodigios, y de los juicios de su boca,

13 Oh vosotros, hijos de Israel su siervo,

Hijos de Jacob, sus escogidos.

14 Jehová, él es nuestro Dios;

Sus juicios están en toda la tierra.

15 Él hace memoria de su pacto perpetuamente,

Y de la palabra que él mandó para mil generaciones;

16 Del pacto que concertó con Abraham,(C)

Y de su juramento a Isaac;(D)

17 El cual confirmó a Jacob por estatuto,

Y a Israel por pacto sempiterno,

18 Diciendo: A ti daré la tierra de Canaán,

Porción de tu heredad.(E)

19 Cuando ellos eran pocos en número,

Pocos y forasteros en ella,

20 Y andaban de nación en nación,

Y de un reino a otro pueblo,

21 No permitió que nadie los oprimiese;

Antes por amor de ellos castigó a los reyes.

22 No toquéis, dijo, a mis ungidos,

Ni hagáis mal a mis profetas.(F)

23 Cantad a Jehová toda la tierra,

Proclamad de día en día su salvación.

24 Cantad entre las gentes su gloria,

Y en todos los pueblos sus maravillas.

25 Porque grande es Jehová, y digno de suprema alabanza,

Y de ser temido sobre todos los dioses.

26 Porque todos los dioses de los pueblos son ídolos;

Mas Jehová hizo los cielos.

27 Alabanza y magnificencia delante de él;

Poder y alegría en su morada.

28 Tributad a Jehová, oh familias de los pueblos,

Dad a Jehová gloria y poder.

29 Dad a Jehová la honra debida a su nombre;

Traed ofrenda, y venid delante de él;

Postraos delante de Jehová en la hermosura de la santidad.

30 Temed en su presencia, toda la tierra;

El mundo será aún establecido, para que no se conmueva.

31 Alégrense los cielos, y gócese la tierra,

Y digan en las naciones: Jehová reina.

32 Resuene el mar, y su plenitud;

Alégrese el campo, y todo lo que contiene.

33 Entonces cantarán los árboles de los bosques delante de Jehová,

Porque viene a juzgar la tierra.

34 Aclamad a Jehová, porque él es bueno;

Porque su misericordia es eterna.(G)

35 Y decid: Sálvanos, oh Dios, salvación nuestra;

Recógenos, y líbranos de las naciones,

Para que confesemos tu santo nombre,

Y nos gloriemos en tus alabanzas.

36 Bendito sea Jehová Dios de Israel,

De eternidad a eternidad.

Y dijo todo el pueblo, Amén, y alabó a Jehová.

Los levitas encargados del arca

37 Y dejó allí, delante del arca del pacto de Jehová, a Asaf y a sus hermanos, para que ministrasen de continuo delante del arca, cada cosa en su día; 38 y a Obed-edom y a sus sesenta y ocho hermanos; y a Obed-edom hijo de Jedutún y a Hosa como porteros. 39 Asimismo al sacerdote Sadoc, y a los sacerdotes sus hermanos, delante del tabernáculo de Jehová en el lugar alto que estaba en Gabaón, 40 para que sacrificasen continuamente, a mañana y tarde, holocaustos a Jehová en el altar del holocausto, conforme a todo lo que está escrito en la ley de Jehová, que él prescribió a Israel; 41 y con ellos a Hemán, a Jedutún y a los otros escogidos declarados por sus nombres, para glorificar a Jehová, porque es eterna su misericordia. 42 Con ellos a Hemán y a Jedutún con trompetas y címbalos para los que tocaban, y con otros instrumentos de música de Dios; y a los hijos de Jedutún para porteros.

43 Y todo el pueblo se fue cada uno a su casa; y David se volvió para bendecir su casa.(H)

Pacto de Dios con David

(2 S. 7.1-29)

17 Aconteció que morando David en su casa, dijo David al profeta Natán: He aquí yo habito en casa de cedro, y el arca del pacto de Jehová debajo de cortinas. 2 Y Natán dijo a David: Haz todo lo que está en tu corazón, porque Dios está contigo.

3 En aquella misma noche vino palabra de Dios a Natán, diciendo: 4 Ve y di a David mi siervo: Así ha dicho Jehová: Tú no me edificarás casa en que habite. 5 Porque no he habitado en casa alguna desde el día que saqué a los hijos de Israel hasta hoy; antes estuve de tienda en tienda, y de tabernáculo en tabernáculo. 6 Por dondequiera que anduve con todo Israel, ¿hablé una palabra a alguno de los jueces de Israel, a los cuales mandé que apacentasen a mi pueblo, para decirles: Por qué no me edificáis una casa de cedro? 7 Por tanto, ahora dirás a mi siervo David: Así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos: Yo te tomé del redil, de detrás de las ovejas, para que fueses príncipe sobre mi pueblo Israel; 8 y he estado contigo en todo cuanto has andado, y he cortado a todos tus enemigos de delante de ti, y te haré gran nombre, como el nombre de los grandes en la tierra. 9 Asimismo he dispuesto lugar para mi pueblo Israel, y lo he plantado para que habite en él y no sea más removido; ni los hijos de iniquidad lo consumirán más, como antes, 10 y desde el tiempo que puse los jueces sobre mi pueblo Israel; mas humillaré a todos tus enemigos. Te hago saber, además, que Jehová te edificará casa. 11 Y cuando tus días sean cumplidos para irte con tus padres, levantaré descendencia después de ti, a uno de entre tus hijos, y afirmaré su reino. 12 Él me edificará casa, y yo confirmaré su trono eternamente. 13 Yo le seré por padre, y él me será por hijo;(I) y no quitaré de él mi misericordia, como la quité de aquel que fue antes de ti; 14 sino que lo confirmaré en mi casa y en mi reino eternamente, y su trono será firme para siempre. 15 Conforme a todas estas palabras, y conforme a toda esta visión, así habló Natán a David.

16 Y entró el rey David y estuvo delante de Jehová, y dijo: Jehová Dios, ¿quién soy yo, y cuál es mi casa, para que me hayas traído hasta este lugar? 17 Y aun esto, oh Dios, te ha parecido poco, pues que has hablado de la casa de tu siervo para tiempo más lejano, y me has mirado como a un hombre excelente, oh Jehová Dios. 18 ¿Qué más puede añadir David pidiendo de ti para glorificar a tu siervo? Mas tú conoces a tu siervo. 19 Oh Jehová, por amor de tu siervo y según tu corazón, has hecho toda esta grandeza, para hacer notorias todas tus grandezas. 20 Jehová, no hay semejante a ti, ni hay Dios sino tú, según todas las cosas que hemos oído con nuestros oídos. 21 ¿Y qué pueblo hay en la tierra como tu pueblo Israel, cuyo Dios fuese y se redimiese un pueblo, para hacerte nombre con grandezas y maravillas, echando a las naciones de delante de tu pueblo, que tú rescataste de Egipto? 22 Tú has constituido a tu pueblo Israel por pueblo tuyo para siempre; y tú, Jehová, has venido a ser su Dios. 23 Ahora pues, Jehová, la palabra que has hablado acerca de tu siervo y de su casa, sea firme para siempre, y haz como has dicho. 24 Permanezca, pues, y sea engrandecido tu nombre para siempre, a fin de que se diga: Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, es Dios para Israel. Y sea la casa de tu siervo David firme delante de ti. 25 Porque tú, Dios mío, revelaste al oído a tu siervo que le has de edificar casa; por eso ha hallado tu siervo motivo para orar delante de ti. 26 Ahora pues, Jehová, tú eres el Dios que has hablado de tu siervo este bien; 27 y ahora has querido bendecir la casa de tu siervo, para que permanezca perpetuamente delante de ti; porque tú, Jehová, la has bendecido, y será bendita para siempre.

14 (A)Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees, masons, and carpenters, to build a house for him. 2 And David realized that the Lord had established him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom was highly exalted, for the sake of His people Israel.

3 Then David took more wives in Jerusalem, and David fathered more sons and daughters. 4 (B)These are the names of the children [a]born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 5 Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, 6 Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, 7 Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphelet.

Philistines Defeated

8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up in search of David; and David heard about it and went out against them. 9 Now the Philistines had come and (C)carried out a raid in the Valley of Rephaim. 10 David inquired of God, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? And will You hand them over to me?” Then the Lord said to him, “Go up, for I will hand them over to you.” 11 So they came up to Baal-perazim, and David [b]defeated them there; and David said, “God has broken through my enemies by my hand, like the breakthrough of waters.” Therefore they named that place [c]Baal-perazim. 12 They abandoned their gods there; so David gave the order and they were burned with fire.

13 The Philistines carried out (D)yet another raid in the valley. 14 David inquired again of God, and God said to him, “You shall not go up after them; circle around [d]behind them and come at them in front of the baka-shrubs. 15 When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the baka-shrubs, then you shall go out to battle, for God will have gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.” 16 David did just as God had commanded him, and they defeated the army of the Philistines from [e]Gibeon even as far as Gezer. 17 Then the fame of David spread in all the lands; and (E)the Lord brought the fear of him on all the nations.

Plans to Move the Ark to Jerusalem

15 Now David built houses for himself in the city of David; and he prepared a place for the ark of God and (F)pitched a tent for it. 2 Then David said, “(G)No one is to carry the ark of God except the Levites; for the Lord chose them to carry the ark of the Lord and to serve Him forever.” 3 And (H)David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the Lord (I)to its place which he had prepared for it. 4 David gathered together the sons of Aaron and (J)the Levites: 5 of the sons of Kohath, Uriel the chief, and 120 of his relatives; 6 of the sons of Merari, Asaiah the chief, and 220 of his relatives; 7 of the sons of Gershom, Joel the chief, and 130 of his relatives; 8 of the sons of Elizaphan, Shemaiah the chief, and two hundred of his relatives; 9 of the sons of Hebron, Eliel the chief, and eighty of his relatives; 10 of the sons of Uzziel, Amminadab the chief, and 112 of his relatives.

11 Then David called for the priests (K)Zadok and (L)Abiathar, and for the Levites, for Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab; 12 and he said to them, “You are the heads of the fathers’ households of the Levites; (M)consecrate yourselves, you and your relatives, so that you may bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel (N)to the place that I have prepared for it. 13 (O)Because you did not carry it at the first, the Lord our God made an outburst against us, since we did not seek Him according to the ordinance.” 14 (P)So the priests and the Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel. 15 The sons of (Q)the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles on them, just as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the Lord.

16 Then David spoke to the chiefs of the Levites (R)to appoint their relatives as the singers, with musical instruments, harps, lyres, and cymbals, playing to raise sounds of joy. 17 So (S)the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel, and from his relatives, Asaph the son of Berechiah; and from the sons of Merari their relatives, Ethan the son of Kushaiah, 18 and with them their relatives of the second rank, Zechariah, [f]Ben, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-edom, and Jeiel, the gatekeepers. 19 So the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were appointed to sound aloud cymbals of bronze; 20 and Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with harps tuned to [g](T)alamoth; 21 and Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah, to lead with [h]lyres tuned to (U)the sheminith. 22 Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was in charge of the singing; he gave instruction in singing because he was skillful. 23 Berechiah and Elkanah were gatekeepers for the ark. 24 Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, (V)blew the trumpets before the ark of God. Obed-edom and Jehiah also were gatekeepers for the ark.

25 (W)So it was David, with the elders of Israel and the captains of thousands, who went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from (X)the house of Obed-edom with joy. 26 Because God was helping the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, they sacrificed (Y)seven bulls and seven rams. 27 Now David was clothed with a robe of fine linen with all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the leader of the singing with the singers. (Z)David also wore an ephod of linen. 28 So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the horn, with trumpets, with loud-sounding cymbals, with harps, and lyres.

29 When the ark of the covenant of the Lord came to the city of David, (AA)Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David dancing and celebrating; and she despised him in her heart.

A Tent for the Ark

16 And they brought in the ark of God and (AB)placed it inside the tent which David had pitched for it, and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God. 2 When David had finished offering the burnt offering and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord. 3 Then he distributed to everyone of Israel, both men and women, to everyone a loaf of bread, a portion of meat, and a raisin cake.

4 He appointed some of the Levites as ministers before the ark of the Lord, to celebrate and to thank and praise the Lord God of Israel: 5 Asaph the chief, and second to him Zechariah, then [i]Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-edom, and Jeiel, with musical instruments, harps, and lyres; also Asaph played loud-sounding cymbals, 6 and the priests Benaiah and Jahaziel blew trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God.

7 Then on that day David (AC)first assigned [j]Asaph and his relatives to give thanks to the Lord.

Psalm of Thanksgiving

8 (AD)Give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name;
(AE)Make His deeds known among the peoples.
9 Sing to Him, sing praises to Him;
[k]Speak of all His [l]wonders.
10 Boast in His holy name;
Let the heart of those who seek the Lord be joyful.
11 (AF)Seek the Lord and His strength;
Seek His face continually.
12 (AG)Remember His wonderful deeds which He has done,
(AH)His marvels and the judgments from His mouth,
13 You [m]descendants of Israel His servant,
Sons of Jacob, His chosen ones!
14 He is the Lord our God;
(AI)His judgments are in all the earth.
15 Remember His covenant forever,
The word which He commanded to a thousand generations,
16 (AJ)The covenant which He made with Abraham,
And His oath to Isaac.
17 (AK)He also confirmed it to Jacob as a statute,
To Israel as an everlasting covenant,
18 Saying, “(AL)To you I will give the land of Canaan,
As the portion of your inheritance.”
19 (AM)When they were only a few in number,
Very few, and strangers in it,
20 And they wandered from nation to nation,
And from one kingdom to another people,
21 He allowed no one to oppress them,
And (AN)He rebuked kings for their sakes, saying,
22 “Do not touch My anointed ones,
And (AO)do not harm My prophets.”
23 (AP)Sing to the Lord, all the earth;
Proclaim good news of His salvation from day to day.
24 Tell of His glory among the nations,
His wonderful deeds among all the peoples.
25 For (AQ)great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
He also is (AR)to be feared above all gods.
26 For all the gods of the peoples are [n](AS)idols,
(AT)But the Lord made the heavens.
27 Splendor and majesty are before Him,
Strength and joy are in His place.
28 Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples,
Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
29 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name;
Bring an [o]offering, and come before Him;
(AU)Worship the Lord in [p]holy attire.
30 Tremble before Him, all the earth;
Indeed, the world is firmly established, it will not be moved.
31 [q](AV)Let the heavens be joyful, and the earth rejoice;
And let them say among the nations, “(AW)The Lord reigns.”
32 (AX)Let the sea [r]roar, and [s]everything it contains;
Let the field rejoice, and everything that is in it.
33 Then the trees of the forest will sing for joy in the presence of the Lord;
For He is coming to judge the earth.
34 (AY)Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
For His faithfulness is everlasting.
35 (AZ)Then say, “Save us, God of our salvation,
And gather us and save us from the nations,
To give thanks to Your holy name,
And [t]glory in Your praise.”
36 (BA)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
From everlasting to everlasting!

Then all the people (BB)said, “Amen,” and praised the Lord.

Worship before the Ark

37 So he left Asaph and his relatives there (BC)before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, to minister before the ark continually, (BD)as every day’s work required, 38 and (BE)Obed-edom with [u]his sixty-eight relatives; Obed-edom, the son of Jeduthun, and (BF)Hosah as gatekeepers. 39 He left (BG)Zadok the priest and his relatives the priests (BH)before the [v]tabernacle of the Lord in the high place which was at Gibeon, 40 to offer burnt offerings to the Lord on the altar of burnt offering continually morning and evening, (BI)even according to everything that is written in the Law of the Lord, which He commanded Israel. 41 With them were (BJ)Heman and Jeduthun, and (BK)the rest who were chosen, who were designated by name, to (BL)give thanks to the Lord, because His [w]kindness is everlasting. 42 And with them were Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those who were to play them, and with instruments for (BM)the songs of God, and the sons of Jeduthun for the gate.

43 (BN)Then all the people departed, each to his house; and David returned to bless his household.

God’s Covenant with David

17 (BO)And it came about, when David lived in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, “Look, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under tent curtains.” 2 Then Nathan said to David, “Do whatever is in your heart, for God is with you.”

3 But it happened that same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying, 4 “Go and tell David My servant, ‘This is what the Lord says: “(BP)You shall not build a house for Me to dwell in; 5 for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up Israel to this day, (BQ)but I have [x]gone from tent to tent and from one dwelling place to another. 6 In all places where I have walked with all Israel, have I spoken a word (BR)with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’”’ 7 Now, therefore, this is what you shall say to My servant David: ‘This is what the Lord of armies says: “I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be leader over My people Israel. 8 I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have eliminated all your enemies from you; and I will make for you a name like the name of the great ones who are on the earth. 9 And I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them there, so that they may live in their own place and not tremble with anxiety again; and the [y]wicked will not make them waste away anymore as they did previously, 10 even from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies.

Moreover, I tell you that the Lord will build a house for you. 11 When your days are fulfilled that you must [z]go to be with your fathers, then I will set up one of your [aa]descendants after you, who will be from your sons; and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He shall build for Me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. 13 (BS)I will be his father and he shall be My son; and I will not take My favor away from him, (BT)as I took it from him who was before you. 14 But I will settle him in My house and in My kingdom forever, and his throne will be established forever.”’” 15 According to all these words and according to all of this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

David’s Prayer in Response

16 Then King David came in and sat before the Lord, and said, “(BU)Who am I, Lord God, and what is my house that You have brought me this far? 17 This was a small thing in Your eyes, God; but You have spoken of Your servant’s house for a great while to come, and have viewed me according to the standard of a person of high degree, Lord God. 18 What more can David still say to You concerning the honor bestowed on Your servant? For You know Your servant. 19 Lord, (BV)for Your servant’s sake, and according to Your own heart, You have accomplished all this greatness, to make known all these great things. 20 Lord, there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to everything that we have heard with our ears. 21 And what one nation on the earth is like Your people Israel, whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people, to make for You a name by great and awesome things, by driving out nations from before Your people, whom You redeemed from Egypt? 22 (BW)For You have made Your people Israel Your own people forever, and You, Lord, became their God.

23 “Now, Lord, let the word that You have spoken concerning Your servant and concerning his house be established forever, and do just as You have spoken. 24 Let Your name be established and be great forever, saying, ‘The Lord of armies is the God of Israel, a God to Israel; and the house of Your servant David is established before You.’ 25 For You, my God, have revealed to Your servant that You will build him a house; therefore Your servant has found courage to pray before You. 26 Now, Lord, You are God, and have [ab]promised this good thing to Your servant. 27 And now You have decided to bless the house of Your servant, that it may [ac]continue forever before You; for You, Lord, have blessed, and it is blessed forever.”
