El hablar en lenguas

14 Seguid el amor; y procurad los dones espirituales, pero sobre todo que profeticéis. 2 Porque el que habla en lenguas no habla a los hombres, sino a Dios; pues nadie le entiende, aunque por el Espíritu habla misterios. 3 Pero el que profetiza habla a los hombres para edificación, exhortación y consolación. 4 El que habla en lengua extraña, a sí mismo se edifica; pero el que profetiza, edifica a la iglesia. 5 Así que, quisiera que todos vosotros hablaseis en lenguas, pero más que profetizaseis; porque mayor es el que profetiza que el que habla en lenguas, a no ser que las interprete para que la iglesia reciba edificación.

6 Ahora pues, hermanos, si yo voy a vosotros hablando en lenguas, ¿qué os aprovechará, si no os hablare con revelación, o con ciencia, o con profecía, o con doctrina? 7 Ciertamente las cosas inanimadas que producen sonidos, como la flauta o la cítara, si no dieren distinción de voces, ¿cómo se sabrá lo que se toca con la flauta o con la cítara? 8 Y si la trompeta diere sonido incierto, ¿quién se preparará para la batalla? 9 Así también vosotros, si por la lengua no diereis palabra bien comprensible, ¿cómo se entenderá lo que decís? Porque hablaréis al aire. 10 Tantas clases de idiomas hay, seguramente, en el mundo, y ninguno de ellos carece de significado. 11 Pero si yo ignoro el valor de las palabras, seré como extranjero para el que habla, y el que habla será como extranjero para mí. 12 Así también vosotros; pues que anheláis dones espirituales, procurad abundar en ellos para edificación de la iglesia.

13 Por lo cual, el que habla en lengua extraña, pida en oración poder interpretarla. 14 Porque si yo oro en lengua desconocida, mi espíritu ora, pero mi entendimiento queda sin fruto. 15 ¿Qué, pues? Oraré con el espíritu, pero oraré también con el entendimiento; cantaré con el espíritu, pero cantaré también con el entendimiento. 16 Porque si bendices solo con el espíritu, el que ocupa lugar de simple oyente, ¿cómo dirá el Amén a tu acción de gracias? pues no sabe lo que has dicho. 17 Porque tú, a la verdad, bien das gracias; pero el otro no es edificado. 18 Doy gracias a Dios que hablo en lenguas más que todos vosotros; 19 pero en la iglesia prefiero hablar cinco palabras con mi entendimiento, para enseñar también a otros, que diez mil palabras en lengua desconocida.

20 Hermanos, no seáis niños en el modo de pensar, sino sed niños en la malicia, pero maduros en el modo de pensar. 21 En la ley está escrito: En otras lenguas y con otros labios hablaré a este pueblo; y ni aun así me oirán, dice el Señor.(A) 22 Así que, las lenguas son por señal, no a los creyentes, sino a los incrédulos; pero la profecía, no a los incrédulos, sino a los creyentes. 23 Si, pues, toda la iglesia se reúne en un solo lugar, y todos hablan en lenguas, y entran indoctos o incrédulos, ¿no dirán que estáis locos? 24 Pero si todos profetizan, y entra algún incrédulo o indocto, por todos es convencido, por todos es juzgado; 25 lo oculto de su corazón se hace manifiesto; y así, postrándose sobre el rostro, adorará a Dios, declarando que verdaderamente Dios está entre vosotros.

26 ¿Qué hay, pues, hermanos? Cuando os reunís, cada uno de vosotros tiene salmo, tiene doctrina, tiene lengua, tiene revelación, tiene interpretación. Hágase todo para edificación. 27 Si habla alguno en lengua extraña, sea esto por dos, o a lo más tres, y por turno; y uno interprete. 28 Y si no hay intérprete, calle en la iglesia, y hable para sí mismo y para Dios. 29 Asimismo, los profetas hablen dos o tres, y los demás juzguen. 30 Y si algo le fuere revelado a otro que estuviere sentado, calle el primero. 31 Porque podéis profetizar todos uno por uno, para que todos aprendan, y todos sean exhortados. 32 Y los espíritus de los profetas están sujetos a los profetas; 33 pues Dios no es Dios de confusión, sino de paz.

Como en todas las iglesias de los santos, 34 vuestras mujeres callen en las congregaciones; porque no les es permitido hablar, sino que estén sujetas, como también la ley lo dice. 35 Y si quieren aprender algo, pregunten en casa a sus maridos; porque es indecoroso que una mujer hable en la congregación. 36 ¿Acaso ha salido de vosotros la palabra de Dios, o solo a vosotros ha llegado?

37 Si alguno se cree profeta, o espiritual, reconozca que lo que os escribo son mandamientos del Señor. 38 Mas el que ignora, ignore. 39 Así que, hermanos, procurad profetizar, y no impidáis el hablar lenguas; 40 pero hágase todo decentemente y con orden.

La resurrección de los muertos

15 Además os declaro, hermanos, el evangelio que os he predicado, el cual también recibisteis, en el cual también perseveráis; 2 por el cual asimismo, si retenéis la palabra que os he predicado, sois salvos, si no creísteis en vano.

3 Porque primeramente os he enseñado lo que asimismo recibí: Que Cristo murió por nuestros pecados, conforme a las Escrituras;(B) 4 y que fue sepultado, y que resucitó al tercer día, conforme a las Escrituras;(C) 5 y que apareció a Cefas,(D) y después a los doce.(E) 6 Después apareció a más de quinientos hermanos a la vez, de los cuales muchos viven aún, y otros ya duermen. 7 Después apareció a Jacobo; después a todos los apóstoles; 8 y al último de todos, como a un abortivo, me apareció a mí.(F) 9 Porque yo soy el más pequeño de los apóstoles, que no soy digno de ser llamado apóstol, porque perseguí a la iglesia de Dios.(G) 10 Pero por la gracia de Dios soy lo que soy; y su gracia no ha sido en vano para conmigo, antes he trabajado más que todos ellos; pero no yo, sino la gracia de Dios conmigo. 11 Porque o sea yo o sean ellos, así predicamos, y así habéis creído.

12 Pero si se predica de Cristo que resucitó de los muertos, ¿cómo dicen algunos entre vosotros que no hay resurrección de muertos? 13 Porque si no hay resurrección de muertos, tampoco Cristo resucitó. 14 Y si Cristo no resucitó, vana es entonces nuestra predicación, vana es también vuestra fe. 15 Y somos hallados falsos testigos de Dios; porque hemos testificado de Dios que él resucitó a Cristo, al cual no resucitó, si en verdad los muertos no resucitan. 16 Porque si los muertos no resucitan, tampoco Cristo resucitó; 17 y si Cristo no resucitó, vuestra fe es vana; aún estáis en vuestros pecados. 18 Entonces también los que durmieron en Cristo perecieron. 19 Si en esta vida solamente esperamos en Cristo, somos los más dignos de conmiseración de todos los hombres.

20 Mas ahora Cristo ha resucitado de los muertos; primicias de los que durmieron es hecho. 21 Porque por cuanto la muerte entró por un hombre, también por un hombre la resurrección de los muertos. 22 Porque así como en Adán todos mueren, también en Cristo todos serán vivificados. 23 Pero cada uno en su debido orden: Cristo, las primicias; luego los que son de Cristo, en su venida. 24 Luego el fin, cuando entregue el reino al Dios y Padre, cuando haya suprimido todo dominio, toda autoridad y potencia. 25 Porque preciso es que él reine hasta que haya puesto a todos sus enemigos debajo de sus pies.(H) 26 Y el postrer enemigo que será destruido es la muerte. 27 Porque todas las cosas las sujetó debajo de sus pies.(I) Y cuando dice que todas las cosas han sido sujetadas a él, claramente se exceptúa aquel que sujetó a él todas las cosas. 28 Pero luego que todas las cosas le estén sujetas, entonces también el Hijo mismo se sujetará al que le sujetó a él todas las cosas, para que Dios sea todo en todos.

29 De otro modo, ¿qué harán los que se bautizan por los muertos, si en ninguna manera los muertos resucitan? ¿Por qué, pues, se bautizan por los muertos? 30 ¿Y por qué nosotros peligramos a toda hora? 31 Os aseguro, hermanos, por la gloria que de vosotros tengo en nuestro Señor Jesucristo, que cada día muero. 32 Si como hombre batallé en Éfeso contra fieras, ¿qué me aprovecha? Si los muertos no resucitan, comamos y bebamos, porque mañana moriremos.(J) 33 No erréis; las malas conversaciones corrompen las buenas costumbres. 34 Velad debidamente, y no pequéis; porque algunos no conocen a Dios; para vergüenza vuestra lo digo.

35 Pero dirá alguno: ¿Cómo resucitarán los muertos? ¿Con qué cuerpo vendrán? 36 Necio, lo que tú siembras no se vivifica, si no muere antes. 37 Y lo que siembras no es el cuerpo que ha de salir, sino el grano desnudo, ya sea de trigo o de otro grano; 38 pero Dios le da el cuerpo como él quiso, y a cada semilla su propio cuerpo. 39 No toda carne es la misma carne, sino que una carne es la de los hombres, otra carne la de las bestias, otra la de los peces, y otra la de las aves. 40 Y hay cuerpos celestiales, y cuerpos terrenales; pero una es la gloria de los celestiales, y otra la de los terrenales. 41 Una es la gloria del sol, otra la gloria de la luna, y otra la gloria de las estrellas, pues una estrella es diferente de otra en gloria.

42 Así también es la resurrección de los muertos. Se siembra en corrupción, resucitará en incorrupción. 43 Se siembra en deshonra, resucitará en gloria; se siembra en debilidad, resucitará en poder. 44 Se siembra cuerpo animal, resucitará cuerpo espiritual. Hay cuerpo animal, y hay cuerpo espiritual. 45 Así también está escrito: Fue hecho el primer hombre Adán alma viviente;(K) el postrer Adán, espíritu vivificante. 46 Mas lo espiritual no es primero, sino lo animal; luego lo espiritual. 47 El primer hombre es de la tierra, terrenal; el segundo hombre, que es el Señor, es del cielo. 48 Cual el terrenal, tales también los terrenales; y cual el celestial, tales también los celestiales. 49 Y así como hemos traído la imagen del terrenal, traeremos también la imagen del celestial. 50 Pero esto digo, hermanos: que la carne y la sangre no pueden heredar el reino de Dios, ni la corrupción hereda la incorrupción.

51 He aquí, os digo un misterio: No todos dormiremos; pero todos seremos transformados, 52 en un momento, en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, a la final trompeta; porque se tocará la trompeta, y los muertos serán resucitados incorruptibles, y nosotros seremos transformados.(L) 53 Porque es necesario que esto corruptible se vista de incorrupción, y esto mortal se vista de inmortalidad. 54 Y cuando esto corruptible se haya vestido de incorrupción, y esto mortal se haya vestido de inmortalidad, entonces se cumplirá la palabra que está escrita: Sorbida es la muerte en victoria.(M) 55 ¿Dónde está, oh muerte, tu aguijón? ¿Dónde, oh sepulcro, tu victoria?(N) 56 ya que el aguijón de la muerte es el pecado, y el poder del pecado, la ley. 57 Mas gracias sean dadas a Dios, que nos da la victoria por medio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.

58 Así que, hermanos míos amados, estad firmes y constantes, creciendo en la obra del Señor siempre, sabiendo que vuestro trabajo en el Señor no es en vano.

Prophecy a Superior Gift

14 (A)Pursue love, yet earnestly (B)desire (C)spiritual gifts, but especially that you may (D)prophesy. 2 For the one who (E)speaks in a tongue does not speak to people, but to God; for no one [a]understands, but [b]in his spirit he speaks (F)mysteries. 3 But the one who prophesies speaks to people for (G)edification, [c](H)exhortation, and consolation. 4 The one who (I)speaks in a tongue (J)edifies himself; but the one who (K)prophesies (L)edifies the church. 5 Now I wish that you all (M)spoke in tongues, but (N)rather that you would prophesy; and greater is the one who prophesies than the one who (O)speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive (P)edification.

6 But now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I speak to you either by way of (Q)revelation, or of (R)knowledge, or of (S)prophecy, or of (T)teaching? 7 Yet even lifeless instruments, whether flute or harp, in producing a sound, if they do not produce a distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp? 8 For if (U)the trumpet produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle? 9 So you too, unless you produce intelligible speech by the tongue, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will just be (V)talking to the air. 10 There are, perhaps, a great many kinds of [d]languages in the world, and none is incapable of meaning. 11 So if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be (W)unintelligible to the one who speaks, and the one who speaks will be unintelligible [e]to me. 12 So you too, since you are eager to possess [f]spiritual gifts, strive to excel for the (X)edification of the church.

13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue is to pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unproductive. 15 (Y)What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit, but I will pray with the mind also; I will (Z)sing with the spirit, but I will sing with the mind also. 16 For otherwise, if you bless God [g]in the spirit only, how will the one who occupies the place of the [h]outsider know to say (AA)the “Amen” at your (AB)giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you are saying? 17 For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not (AC)edified. 18 I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all; 19 nevertheless, in church I prefer to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.

Instruction for the Church

20 (AD)Brothers and sisters, (AE)do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil (AF)be infants, but in your thinking be mature. 21 In (AG)the [i]Law it is written: “(AH)By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people, and even so they will not listen to Me,” says the Lord. 22 So then, tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but (AI)prophecy is not for unbelievers, but for those who believe. 23 Therefore if the whole church gathers together and all the people speak in tongues, and [j]outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that (AJ)you are insane? 24 But if all (AK)prophesy, and an unbeliever or an [k]outsider enters, he is (AL)convicted by all, he is called to account by all; 25 (AM)the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will (AN)fall on his face and worship God, (AO)declaring that God is certainly among you.

26 (AP)What is the outcome then, (AQ)brothers and sisters? When you assemble, (AR)each one has a (AS)psalm, has a (AT)teaching, has a (AU)revelation, has a (AV)tongue, has an (AW)interpretation. (AX)All things are to be done for edification. 27 If anyone speaks in a (AY)tongue, it must be by two or at the most three, and each one in turn, and one is to (AZ)interpret; 28 but if there is no interpreter, he is to keep silent in church; and have him speak to himself and to God. 29 Have two or three (BA)prophets speak, and have the others (BB)pass judgment. 30 But if a revelation is made to another who is seated, then the first one is to keep silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be [l]exhorted; 32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets; 33 for God is not a God of (BC)confusion, but of peace.

As in (BD)all the churches of the [m](BE)saints, 34 the women are to (BF)keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but (BG)are to subject themselves, just as (BH)the Law also says. 35 If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is [n]improper for a woman to speak in church. 36 Or was it from you that the word of God first went out? Or has it come to you only?

37 (BI)If anyone thinks that he is a prophet or (BJ)spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you (BK)are the Lord’s commandment. 38 But if anyone does not recognize this, [o]he is not recognized.

39 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, (BL)earnestly desire to (BM)prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But (BN)all things must be done properly and in an orderly way.

The Fact of Christ’s Resurrection

15 Now (BO)I make known to you, brothers and sisters, the (BP)gospel which I preached to you, which you also received, (BQ)in which you also stand, 2 by which you also are saved, (BR)if you hold firmly to [p]the word which I preached to you, (BS)unless you believed in vain.

3 For (BT)I handed down to you [q]as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died (BU)for our sins (BV)according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was (BW)raised on the third day (BX)according to the Scriptures, 5 and that (BY)He appeared to [r](BZ)Cephas, then (CA)to the twelve. 6 After that He appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some (CB)have fallen asleep; 7 then He appeared to [s](CC)James, then to (CD)all the apostles; 8 and last of all, as [t]to one untimely born, (CE)He appeared to me also. 9 For I am (CF)the least of the apostles, [u]and not fit to be called an apostle, because I (CG)persecuted the church of God. 10 But by (CH)the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I (CI)labored even more than all of them, yet (CJ)not I, but the grace of God with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

12 Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there (CK)is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised; 14 and (CL)if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain, your faith also is in vain. 15 Moreover, we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified [v]against God that He (CM)raised [w]Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then not even Christ has been raised; 17 and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; (CN)you are still in your sins. 18 Then also those who (CO)have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If we have hoped in Christ only in this life, we are (CP)of all people most to be pitied.

The Order of Resurrection

20 But the fact is, Christ (CQ)has been raised from the dead, the (CR)first fruits of those who (CS)are asleep. 21 For since (CT)by a man death came, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For (CU)as in Adam all die, so also in [x]Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Christ (CV)the first fruits, after that (CW)those who are Christ’s at (CX)His coming, 24 then comes the end, when He hands over (CY)the kingdom to our (CZ)God and Father, when He has abolished (DA)all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign (DB)until He has put all His enemies under His feet. 26 The last enemy that will be (DC)abolished is death. 27 For (DD)He has put all things in subjection under His feet. But when He says, “(DE)All things are put in subjection,” it is clear that [y]this excludes the Father who put all things in subjection to Him. 28 When (DF)all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subjected to the One who subjected all things to Him, so that (DG)God may be all in all.

29 For otherwise, what will those do who are baptized [z]for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then are they baptized [aa]for them? 30 Why are we also (DH)in danger every hour? 31 I affirm, brothers and sisters, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, that (DI)I die daily. 32 If [ab]from human motives I (DJ)fought with wild beasts at (DK)Ephesus, what good is it to me? If the dead are not raised, (DL)let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we die. 33 (DM)Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.” 34 (DN)Sober up [ac]morally and stop sinning, for some have (DO)no knowledge of God. (DP)I say this to your shame.

35 But (DQ)someone will say, “How are (DR)the dead raised? And with what kind of body do they come?” 36 (DS)You fool! That which you (DT)sow does not come to life unless it dies; 37 and that which you sow, you do not sow the body which is to be, but a bare grain, perhaps of wheat or of [ad]something else. 38 But God gives it a body just as He wished, and (DU)to each of the seeds a body of its own. 39 All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one flesh of mankind, another flesh of animals, another flesh of birds, and another of fish. 40 There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is one, and the glory of the earthly is another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory.

42 (DV)So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown [ae](DW)a perishable body, it is raised [af](DX)an imperishable body; 43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in (DY)glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a (DZ)natural body, it is raised a (EA)spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 So also it is written: “The first (EB)man, Adam, became a living [ag]person.” The (EC)last Adam was a (ED)life-giving spirit. 46 However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural; then the spiritual. 47 The first man is (EE)from the earth, [ah](EF)earthy; the second man is from heaven. 48 As is the earthy one, so also are those who are earthy; and as is the heavenly one, (EG)so also are those who are heavenly. 49 Just as we have (EH)borne the image of the earthy, [ai]we (EI)will also bear the image of the heavenly.

The Mystery of Resurrection

50 Now I say this, brothers and sisters, that (EJ)flesh and blood cannot (EK)inherit the kingdom of God; nor does [aj]the perishable inherit [ak](EL)the imperishable. 51 Behold, I am telling you a [al](EM)mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be (EN)changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for (EO)the trumpet will sound, and (EP)the dead will be raised [am]imperishable, and (EQ)we will be changed. 53 For this [an]perishable must put on [ao](ER)the imperishable, and this (ES)mortal must put on immortality. 54 But when this [ap]perishable puts on [aq]the imperishable, and this mortal puts on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written: “(ET)Death has been swallowed up in victory. 55 (EU)Where, O Death, is your victory? Where, O Death, is your sting?” 56 The sting of (EV)death is sin, and (EW)the power of sin is the Law; 57 but (EX)thanks be to God, who gives us the (EY)victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58 (EZ)Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, be firm, immovable, always excelling in (FA)the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
