4 My children, you belong to God. You have won the victory over those prophets who are not true. You have won because the Spirit that is in you is stronger than the spirit that is in the world.
5 Those prophets belong to the world. That is why they teach about things in the world. And that is why the people of the world listen to them.
6 But we belong to God. Anyone who knows God listens to us. Anyone who does not belong to God does not listen to us. This is how we know if a spirit is true or not true.
7 My dear brothers, we must love one another, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves others is God's child and he knows God.
8 But anyone who does not love others does not know God, because God is love.
9 This is how God showed his love for us. He sent his only Son into the world to give us life.
10 This is love! We did not love God, but he loved us. And he sent his Son to be the sacrifice to pay for the wrong things we have done.
11 My dear brothers, if God loved us so much, we must love one another also.
12 No man has ever seen God. But God lives in us if we love one another. And in loving one another, his love is made perfect.

4 You, dear children,(A) are from God and have overcome them,(B) because the one who is in you(C) is greater than the one who is in the world.(D) 5 They are from the world(E) and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us.(F) This is how we recognize the Spirit[a] of truth(G) and the spirit of falsehood.(H)
God’s Love and Ours
7 Dear friends, let us love one another,(I) for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God(J) and knows God.(K) 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.(L) 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son(M) into the world that we might live through him.(N) 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us(O) and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.(P) 11 Dear friends,(Q) since God so loved us,(R) we also ought to love one another.(S) 12 No one has ever seen God;(T) but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.(U)
