Offerings for the Temple

29 And David the king said to all the assembly, “Solomon my son, whom alone God has chosen, is ^(A)young and inexperienced, and the work is great, for ^(B)the palace will not be for man but for the Lord God. ²So I have provided for the house of my God, so far as I was able, the gold for the things of gold, the silver for the things of silver, and the bronze for the things of bronze, the iron for the things of iron, and wood for the things of wood, besides great quantities of ^(C)onyx and stones for setting, antimony, colored stones, all sorts of precious stones and marble. ³Moreover, in addition to all that I have provided for the holy house, I have a treasure of my own of gold and silver, and because of my devotion to the house of my God I give it to the house of my God: ⁴^(D)3,000 talents^[a] of gold, of the gold of ^(E)Ophir, and 7,000 talents of refined silver, for overlaying the walls of the house,^[b] ⁵and for all the work to be done by craftsmen, gold for the things of gold and silver for the things of silver. Who then will offer willingly, consecrating himself^[c] today to the Lord?”

⁶Then ^(F)the leaders of fathers' houses made their freewill offerings, as did also the leaders of the tribes, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and ^(G)the officers over the king's work. ⁷They gave for the service of the house of God 5,000 talents and 10,000 ^(H)darics^[d] of gold, 10,000 talents of silver, 18,000 talents of bronze and 100,000 talents of iron. ⁸And whoever had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the house of the Lord, in the care of ^(I)Jehiel the Gershonite. ⁹Then the people rejoiced because they had given willingly, for with a ^(J)whole heart they had offered freely to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly.

David Prays in the Assembly

¹⁰Therefore David blessed the Lord in the presence of all the assembly. And David said: ^(K)“Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. ¹¹^(L)Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. ¹²^(M)Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. ^(N)In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. ¹³And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.

¹⁴“But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. ¹⁵^(O)For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are ^(P)like a shadow, and there is no abiding.^[e] ¹⁶O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand and is all your own. ¹⁷I know, my God, ^(Q)that you test the heart and ^(R)have pleasure in uprightness. In the uprightness of my heart I have freely offered all these things, and now I have seen your people, who are present here, offering freely and joyously to you. ¹⁸O Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep forever such purposes and thoughts in the hearts of your people, and direct their hearts toward you. ¹⁹^(S)Grant to Solomon my son a whole heart that he may keep your commandments, your testimonies, and your statutes, performing all, and that he may ^(T)build the palace ^(U)for which I have made provision.”

²⁰Then David said to all the assembly, ^(V)“Bless the Lord your God.” And all the assembly blessed the Lord, the God of their fathers, ^(W)and bowed their heads and paid homage to the Lord and to the king. ²¹And they offered sacrifices to the Lord, and on the next day offered burnt offerings to the Lord, 1,000 bulls, 1,000 rams, and 1,000 lambs, with their ^(X)drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel. ²²And they ate and drank before the Lord on that day with great gladness.

Solomon Anointed King

And they made Solomon the son of David king ^(Y)the second time, and they ^(Z)anointed him as prince for the Lord, and ^(AA)Zadok as priest.

²³^(AB)Then Solomon sat on the ^(AC)throne of the Lord as king in place of David his father. And he prospered, and all Israel obeyed him. ²⁴All the leaders and the mighty men, and also all the sons of King David, pledged their allegiance to King Solomon. ²⁵And the Lord made Solomon very ^(AD)great in the sight of all Israel and ^(AE)bestowed on him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel.

The Death of David

²⁶Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel. ²⁷The ^(AF)time that he reigned over Israel was forty years. He reigned seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. ²⁸Then he died ^(AG)at a good age, ^(AH)full of days, riches, and honor. And Solomon his son reigned in his place. ²⁹Now the acts of King David, from first to last, are written in the Chronicles ^(AI)of Samuel the seer, and in the Chronicles of ^(AJ)Nathan the prophet, and in the Chronicles of ^(AK)Gad the seer, ³⁰with accounts of all his rule and his might and of the circumstances ^(AL)that came upon him and upon Israel and upon all the kingdoms of the countries.

Isaiah 30

Do Not Go Down to Egypt

30 “Ah, ^(A)stubborn children,” declares the Lord,
^(B)“who carry out a plan, but not mine,
and who make ^(C)an alliance,^[a] but not of my Spirit,
    that they may add sin to sin;
²^(D)who set out to go down to Egypt,
    without asking for my direction,
to take refuge in the protection of Pharaoh
    and to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!
³^(E)Therefore shall the protection of Pharaoh turn to your shame,
    and the shelter in the shadow of Egypt to your humiliation.
⁴For though his officials are at ^(F)Zoan
    and ^(G)his envoys reach ^(H)Hanes,
⁵everyone comes to shame
    through ^(I)a people that cannot profit them,
that brings neither help nor profit,
    but shame and disgrace.”

⁶An ^(J)oracle on ^(K)the beasts of ^(L)the Negeb.

Through a land of trouble and anguish,
    from where come the lioness and the lion,
    the adder and the ^(M)flying fiery serpent,
they carry their riches on the backs of donkeys,
    and their treasures on the humps of camels,
    to a people that cannot profit them.
⁷Egypt's ^(N)help is worthless and empty;
    therefore I have called her
    ^(O)“Rahab who sits still.”

A Rebellious People

⁸And now, go, ^(P)write it before them on a tablet
    and inscribe it in a book,
that it may be for the time to come
    as a witness forever.^[b]
⁹^(Q)For they are a rebellious people,
    lying children,
children unwilling to hear
    the instruction of the Lord;
¹⁰^(R)who say to ^(S)the seers, “Do not see,”
    and to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us what is right;
speak to us ^(T)smooth things,
    prophesy illusions,
¹¹leave the way, turn aside from the path,
    let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel.”
¹²Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel,
“Because you despise this word
    and trust in ^(U)oppression and perverseness
    and rely on them,
¹³therefore this iniquity shall be to you
    ^(V)like a breach in a high wall, bulging out and about to collapse,
    whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant;
¹⁴and its breaking is ^(W)like that of a potter's vessel
    that is smashed so ruthlessly
that among its fragments not a shard is found
    with which to take fire from the hearth,
    or to dip up water out of the cistern.”

¹⁵For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel,
“In ^(X)returning^[c] and ^(Y)rest you shall be saved;
    in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.”
But you were unwilling, ¹⁶and you said,
“No! We will flee upon ^(Z)horses”;
    therefore you shall flee away;
and, “We will ride upon swift steeds”;
    therefore your pursuers shall be swift.
¹⁷^(AA)A thousand shall flee at the threat of one;
    at the threat of five you shall flee,
till you are left
    like a flagstaff on the top of a mountain,
    like a signal on a hill.

The Lord Will Be Gracious

¹⁸Therefore the Lord ^(AB)waits to be gracious to you,
and therefore he ^(AC)exalts himself to show mercy to you.
For the Lord is a God of justice;
^(AD)blessed are all those who wait for him.

¹⁹For a people shall dwell ^(AE)in Zion, in Jerusalem; you shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry. As soon as he hears it, he answers you. ²⁰And though the Lord give you the ^(AF)bread of adversity and the ^(AG)water of affliction, ^(AH)yet your Teacher will not hide himself anymore, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. ²¹^(AI)And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is ^(AJ)the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. ²²Then you will defile your carved idols overlaid with silver and your gold-plated metal images. ^(AK)You will scatter them as unclean things. You will say to them, “Be gone!”

²³^(AL)And he will give ^(AM)rain for the seed with which you sow the ground, and bread, the produce of the ground, which will be rich and plenteous. ^(AN)In that day your livestock will graze in large pastures, ²⁴and ^(AO)the oxen and the donkeys that work the ground will eat seasoned fodder, which has been winnowed with shovel and fork. ²⁵And ^(AP)on every lofty mountain and every high hill there will be brooks running with water, in the day of the great slaughter, ^(AQ)when the towers fall. ²⁶^(AR)Moreover, the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day when ^(AS)the Lord binds up ^(AT)the brokenness of his people, and heals the wounds inflicted by his blow.

²⁷Behold, the name of the Lord comes from afar,
    burning with his anger, and in thick rising smoke;^[d]
his lips are full of fury,
    and his tongue is like a devouring fire;
²⁸^(AU)his breath is ^(AV)like an overflowing stream
    that reaches up to the neck;
to sift the nations with the sieve of destruction,
    and to place on the jaws of the peoples ^(AW)a bridle that leads astray.

²⁹You shall have a song as in the night when a holy feast is kept, and gladness of heart, ^(AX)as when one sets out to the sound of the flute to go to ^(AY)the mountain of the Lord, to ^(AZ)the Rock of Israel. ³⁰And the Lord ^(BA)will cause his majestic voice to be heard and the descending blow of his arm to be seen, in furious anger ^(BB)and a flame of devouring fire, with a cloudburst ^(BC)and storm and hailstones. ³¹The Assyrians will be terror-stricken at the voice of the Lord, ^(BD)when he strikes with his rod. ³²And every stroke of the appointed staff that the Lord lays on them ^(BE)will be to the sound of tambourines and lyres. ^(BF)Battling with brandished arm, he will fight with them. ³³For ^(BG)a burning place^[e] has long been prepared; indeed, for the king it is made ready, ^(BH)its pyre made deep and wide, with fire and wood in abundance; ^(BI)the breath of the Lord, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it.
