Qualifications for Deacons

(A)Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued,[a] (B)not addicted to much wine, (C)not greedy for dishonest gain. They must (D)hold the mystery of the faith with (E)a clear conscience. 10 And (F)let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. 11 (G)Their wives likewise[b] must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, (H)faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons each be (I)the husband of one wife, (J)managing their children and their own households well. 13 For (K)those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

The Mystery of Godliness

14 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, 15 if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth. 16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:

(L)He[c] was manifested in the flesh,
    vindicated[d] by the Spirit,[e]
        (M)seen by angels,
(N)proclaimed among the nations,
    (O)believed on in the world,
        (P)taken up in glory.

Some Will Depart from the Faith

Now (Q)the Spirit expressly says that (R)in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to (S)deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of (T)liars whose consciences are seared, (U)who forbid marriage and (V)require abstinence from foods (W)that God created (X)to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For (Y)everything created by God is good, and (Z)nothing is to be rejected if it is (AA)received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy (AB)by the word of God and prayer.

A Good Servant of Christ Jesus

(AC)If you put these things before the brothers,[f] you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have (AD)followed. Have nothing to do with irreverent, (AE)silly myths. Rather (AF)train yourself for godliness; for while (AG)bodily training is of some value, godliness (AH)is of value in every way, as (AI)it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. The saying is (AJ)trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. 10 For to this end we toil and strive,[g] because we have our hope set on the living God, (AK)who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

11 Command and teach (AL)these things. 12 (AM)Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers (AN)an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 (AO)Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you (AP)by prophecy when the council of elders (AQ)laid their hands on you. 15 Practice these things, immerse yourself in them,[h] so that (AR)all may see your progress. 16 (AS)Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save (AT)both yourself and (AU)your hearers.

  2. 1 Timothy 3:11 Or Wives likewise, or Women likewise
  3. 1 Timothy 3:16 Greek Who; some manuscripts God; others Which
  4. 1 Timothy 3:16 Or justified
  5. 1 Timothy 3:16 Or vindicated in spirit
  6. 1 Timothy 4:6 Or brothers and sisters. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, the plural Greek word adelphoi (translated “brothers”) may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters

  8. 1 Timothy 4:15 Greek be in them

In the same way, deacons[a](A) are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine,(B) and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.(C) 10 They must first be tested;(D) and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.

11 In the same way, the women[b] are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers(E) but temperate(F) and trustworthy in everything.

12 A deacon must be faithful to his wife(G) and must manage his children and his household well.(H) 13 Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.

Reasons for Paul’s Instructions

14 Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, 15 if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church(I) of the living God,(J) the pillar and foundation of the truth. 16 Beyond all question, the mystery(K) from which true godliness(L) springs is great:

He appeared in the flesh,(M)
    was vindicated by the Spirit,[c]
was seen by angels,
    was preached among the nations,(N)
was believed on in the world,
    was taken up in glory.(O)

The Spirit(P) clearly says that in later times(Q) some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits(R) and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.(S) They forbid people to marry(T) and order them to abstain from certain foods,(U) which God created(V) to be received with thanksgiving(W) by those who believe and who know the truth. For everything God created is good,(X) and nothing is to be rejected(Y) if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God(Z) and prayer.

If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters,[d] you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith(AA) and of the good teaching that you have followed.(AB) Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales;(AC) rather, train yourself to be godly.(AD) For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things,(AE) holding promise for both the present life(AF) and the life to come.(AG) This is a trustworthy saying(AH) that deserves full acceptance. 10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God,(AI) who is the Savior of all people,(AJ) and especially of those who believe.

11 Command and teach these things.(AK) 12 Don’t let anyone look down on you(AL) because you are young, but set an example(AM) for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith(AN) and in purity. 13 Until I come,(AO) devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture,(AP) to preaching and to teaching. 14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy(AQ) when the body of elders(AR) laid their hands on you.(AS)

15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save(AT) both yourself and your hearers.
