18 This (A)command I entrust to you, Timothy, (B)my [a]son, in accordance with the (C)prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you (D)fight the good fight, 19 keeping (E)faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to [b](F)their faith. 20 [c]Among these are (G)Hymenaeus and (H)Alexander, whom I have (I)handed over to Satan, so that they will be (J)taught not to blaspheme.

A Call to Prayer

First of all, then, I urge that (K)requests, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made in behalf of all people, (L)for kings and all who are in [d]authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and [e]dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of (M)God our Savior, (N)who wants all people to be (O)saved and to (P)come to the [f]knowledge of the truth. For there is (Q)one God, and (R)one mediator also between God and mankind, the (S)man Christ Jesus, who (T)gave Himself as a ransom for all, the (U)testimony [g]given at [h](V)the proper time. (W)For this I was appointed as a [i]preacher and (X)an apostle ((Y)I am telling the truth, I am not lying), as a teacher of (Z)the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Instructions for Believers

Therefore (AA)I want the men (AB)in every place to pray, (AC)lifting up (AD)holy hands, without anger and dispute. Likewise, I want (AE)women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, [j]modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or expensive apparel, 10 but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness. 11 (AF)A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. 12 (AG)But I do not allow a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. 13 (AH)For it was Adam who was first [k]created, and then Eve. 14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but (AI)the woman was [l]deceived and [m]became a wrongdoer. 15 But [n]women will be [o]preserved through [p]childbirth—if they continue in (AJ)faith, love, and sanctity, with moderation.

The Charge to Timothy Renewed

18 Timothy, my son,(A) I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you,(B) so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well,(C) 19 holding on to faith and a good conscience,(D) which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith.(E) 20 Among them are Hymenaeus(F) and Alexander,(G) whom I have handed over to Satan(H) to be taught not to blaspheme.

Instructions on Worship

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers,(I) intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority,(J) that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness(K) and holiness. This is good, and pleases(L) God our Savior,(M) who wants(N) all people(O) to be saved(P) and to come to a knowledge of the truth.(Q) For there is one God(R) and one mediator(S) between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,(T) who gave himself as a ransom(U) for all people. This has now been witnessed to(V) at the proper time.(W) And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying(X)—and a true and faithful teacher(Y) of the Gentiles.(Z)

Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands(AA) without anger or disputing. I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,(AB) 10 but with good deeds,(AC) appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

11 A woman[a] should learn in quietness and full submission.(AD) 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[b] she must be quiet.(AE) 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.(AF) 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.(AG) 15 But women[c] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love(AH) and holiness with propriety.
