Predicción de la apostasía

4 Pero el Espíritu dice claramente que en los postreros tiempos algunos apostatarán de la fe, escuchando a espíritus engañadores y a doctrinas de demonios; 2 por la hipocresía de mentirosos que, teniendo cauterizada la conciencia, 3 prohibirán casarse, y mandarán abstenerse de alimentos que Dios creó para que con acción de gracias participasen de ellos los creyentes y los que han conocido la verdad. 4 Porque todo lo que Dios creó es bueno, y nada es de desecharse, si se toma con acción de gracias; 5 porque por la palabra de Dios y por la oración es santificado.

Un buen ministro de Jesucristo

6 Si esto enseñas a los hermanos, serás buen ministro de Jesucristo, nutrido con las palabras de la fe y de la buena doctrina que has seguido. 7 Desecha las fábulas profanas y de viejas. Ejercítate para la piedad; 8 porque el ejercicio corporal para poco es provechoso, pero la piedad para todo aprovecha, pues tiene promesa de esta vida presente, y de la venidera. 9 Palabra fiel es esta, y digna de ser recibida por todos. 10 Que por esto mismo trabajamos y sufrimos oprobios, porque esperamos en el Dios viviente, que es el Salvador de todos los hombres, mayormente de los que creen.

11 Esto manda y enseña. 12 Ninguno tenga en poco tu juventud, sino sé ejemplo de los creyentes en palabra, conducta, amor, espíritu, fe y pureza. 13 Entre tanto que voy, ocúpate en la lectura, la exhortación y la enseñanza. 14 No descuides el don que hay en ti, que te fue dado mediante profecía con la imposición de las manos del presbiterio. 15 Ocúpate en estas cosas; permanece en ellas, para que tu aprovechamiento sea manifiesto a todos. 16 Ten cuidado de ti mismo y de la doctrina; persiste en ello, pues haciendo esto, te salvarás a ti mismo y a los que te oyeren.

II.— INSTRUCCIONES PERSONALES A TIMOTEO (4,1—6,21)

Falsos maestros y falsas enseñanzas

4 El Espíritu proclama que, en los últimos tiempos, algunos desertarán de la ley y prestarán oídos a falsos maestros y a enseñanzas demoniacas. 2 Se trata de embaucadores hipócritas que tienen la conciencia empedernida 3 y que prohíben tanto el matrimonio como el uso de ciertos alimentos, siendo así que Dios ha creado estas cosas para que los fieles, que conocen la verdad, disfruten de ellas dándole gracias. 4 Pues todo cuanto Dios ha creado es bueno, y nada hay que sea pernicioso si se come dando gracias. 5 Todo lo santifica la palabra de Dios y la oración.

El buen servidor de Jesucristo

6 Si enseñas estas cosas a los hermanos, serás un buen servidor de Cristo Jesús y estarás alimentado con el mensaje de la fe y de la hermosa enseñanza que tan fielmente has seguido. 7 Desecha los mitos profanos que sólo son cuentos de viejas. Ejercítate en una vida auténticamente piadosa, 8 teniendo en cuenta que el ejercicio corporal no sirve para mucho y, en cambio, una vida auténticamente religiosa es útil para todo; además, cuenta con la promesa de la vida, tanto presente como futura. 9 Es esta una palabra digna de crédito y que debe aceptarse sin reservas. 10 En efecto, si nos fatigamos y luchamos, es porque hemos puesto la esperanza en Dios viviente que es salvador de todos, especialmente de los creyentes.

11 Enseña y recomienda estas cosas. 12 Que nadie te menosprecie por ser joven. Al contrario, que tu palabra, tu conducta, tu amor, tu fe y tu limpio proceder te conviertan en modelo para los creyentes. 13 Mientras esperas que yo llegue, dedícate a la lectura [de las Escrituras], a la exhortación y a la enseñanza. 14 No hagas estéril el don que hay en ti y que se te confirió cuando, por indicación profética, los presbíteros te impusieron las manos. 15 Tómate en serio todo esto y vívelo intensamente a fin de que todos puedan constatar tu aprovechamiento. 16 Cuida de ti y de la enseñanza; sé constante en lo que hagas, pues de esa manera te salvarás tú y salvarás a quienes te escuchen.

The Great Apostasy

4 Now the Spirit [a]expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed (A)to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 (B)speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience (C)seared with a hot iron, 3 forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; 5 for it is [b]sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

A Good Servant of Jesus Christ

6 If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, (D)nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed. 7 But (E)reject profane and old wives’ fables, and (F)exercise yourself toward godliness. 8 For (G)bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, (H)having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance. 10 For to this end [c]we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, (I)who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. 11 These things command and teach.

Take Heed to Your Ministry

12 Let no one [d]despise your youth, but be an (J)example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, [e]in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to [f]doctrine. 14 (K)Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy (L)with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. 15 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. 16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

Apostasy

4 But the [Holy] Spirit explicitly and unmistakably declares that in later times some will turn away from the faith, paying attention instead to deceitful and seductive spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 [misled] by the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared as with a branding iron [leaving them incapable of ethical functioning], 3 who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from [certain kinds of] foods which God has created to be gratefully shared by those who believe and have [a clear] knowledge of the truth. 4 For everything God has created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude; 5 for it is sanctified [set apart, dedicated to God] by means of the word of God and prayer.

A Good Minister’s Discipline

6 If you point out these instructions to the [a]brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished [through study] on the words of the faith and of the good [Christian] doctrine which you have closely followed. 7 But have nothing to do with irreverent folklore and silly myths. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness [keeping yourself spiritually fit]. 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness (spiritual training) is of value in everything and in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and for the life to come. 9 This is a faithful and trustworthy saying worthy of full acceptance and approval. 10 It is for this that we labor and strive [often called to account], because we have fixed our [confident] hope on the living God, who is the [b]Savior of all people, especially of those who believe [in Him, recognize Him as the Son of God, and accept Him as Savior and Lord].

11 Keep commanding and teaching these things. 12 Let no one look down on [you because of] your youth, but be an example and set a pattern for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in [moral] purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to public reading [of Scripture], to preaching and to teaching [the sound doctrine of God’s word]. 14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, [that special endowment] which was intentionally bestowed on you [by the Holy Spirit] through prophetic utterance when the [c]elders laid their hands on you [at your ordination]. 15 Practice and work hard on these things; be absorbed in them [completely occupied in your ministry], so that your progress will be evident to all. 16 Pay close attention to yourself [concentrate on your personal development] and to your teaching; persevere in these things [hold to them], for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.
