Saul Tries to Kill David

19 And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. (A)But Jonathan, Saul's son, delighted much in David. And Jonathan told David, “Saul my father seeks to kill you. Therefore be on your guard in the morning. Stay in a secret place and hide yourself. And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak to my father about you. And if I learn anything I will tell you.” And Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king (B)sin against his servant David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his deeds have brought good to you. For (C)he took his life in his hand (D)and he struck down the Philistine, (E)and the Lord worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against (F)innocent blood by killing David without cause?” And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan. Saul swore, (G)“As the Lord lives, he shall not be put to death.” And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan reported to him all these things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence (H)as before.

And there was war again. And David went out and fought with the Philistines and struck them with a great blow, so that they fled before him. (I)Then a harmful spirit from the Lord came upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand. (J)And David was playing the lyre. 10 (K)And Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he eluded Saul, so that he struck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night.

11 (L)Saul sent messengers to David's house to watch him, that he might kill him in the morning. But Michal, David's wife, told him, “If you do not escape with your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.” 12 (M)So Michal let David down through the window, and he fled away and escaped. 13 Michal took (N)an image[a] and laid it on the bed and put a pillow of goats' hair at its head and covered it with the clothes. 14 And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, “He is sick.” 15 Then Saul sent the messengers to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him.” 16 And when the messengers came in, behold, (O)the image was in the bed, with the pillow of goats' hair at its head. 17 Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me thus and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?” And Michal answered Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go. (P)Why should I kill you?’”

18 Now David fled and escaped, and he came to Samuel at (Q)Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and lived at Naioth. 19 And it was told Saul, “Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.” 20 Then Saul sent messengers to take David, and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, (R)the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, (S)and they also prophesied. 21 When it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, (T)and they also prophesied. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, (U)and they also prophesied. 22 Then he himself went to Ramah and came to the great well that is in Secu. And he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” And one said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in (V)Ramah.” 23 And he went there to Naioth in Ramah. (W)And the Spirit of God came upon him also, and as he went he prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah. 24 (X)And he too stripped off his clothes, and he too prophesied before Samuel and lay naked all that day and all that night. Thus it is said, (Y)“Is Saul also among the prophets?”

Jonathan Warns David

20 Then David fled from Naioth (Z)in Ramah and came and said before Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my guilt? And what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?” And he said to him, “Far from it! You shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me. And why should my father hide this from me? It is not so.” But David vowed again, saying, “Your father knows well that (AA)I have found favor in your eyes, and he thinks, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.’ But truly, (AB)as the Lord lives and (AC)as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.” Then Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you say, I will do for you.” David said to Jonathan, “Behold, tomorrow is (AD)the new moon, and I should not fail to sit at table with the king. But let me go, (AE)that I may hide myself in the field till the third day at evening. (AF)If your father misses me at all, then say, ‘David earnestly asked leave of me to run (AG)to Bethlehem his city, for there is a yearly (AH)sacrifice there for all the clan.’ If he says, ‘Good!’ it will be well with your servant, but if he is angry, then know that (AI)harm is determined by him. Therefore deal kindly with your servant, (AJ)for you have brought your servant into a covenant of the Lord with you. (AK)But if there is guilt in me, kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your father?” And Jonathan said, “Far be it from you! If I knew that (AL)it was determined by my father that harm should come to you, would I not tell you?” 10 Then David said to Jonathan, “Who will tell me if your father answers you roughly?” 11 And Jonathan said to David, “Come, let us go out into the field.” So they both went out into the field.

12 And Jonathan said to David, “The Lord, the God of Israel, be witness![b] When I have sounded out my father, about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if he is well disposed toward David, shall I not then send and disclose it to you? 13 But should it please my father to do you harm, (AM)the Lord do so to Jonathan and more also if I do not disclose it to you and send you away, that you may go in safety. (AN)May the Lord be with you, as he has been with my father. 14 If I am still alive, show me the steadfast love of the Lord, that I may not die; 15 (AO)and do not cut off[c] your steadfast love from my house forever, when the Lord cuts off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth.” 16 And Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, (AP)“May[d] the Lord take vengeance on David's enemies.” 17 And Jonathan made David swear again by his love for him, (AQ)for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

18 Then Jonathan said to him, (AR)“Tomorrow is the new moon, and (AS)you will be missed, because (AT)your seat will be empty. 19 On the third day go down quickly to the place where you hid yourself when the matter was in hand, and remain beside the stone heap.[e] 20 And I will shoot three arrows to the side of it, as though I shot at a mark. 21 And behold, I will send the boy, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I say to the boy, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you, take them,’ then you are to come, for, (AU)as the Lord lives, it is safe for you and there is no danger. 22 But if I say to the youth, (AV)‘Look, the arrows are beyond you,’ then go, for the Lord has sent you away. 23 (AW)And as for the matter of which you and I have spoken, behold, (AX)the Lord is between you and me forever.”

24 So David hid himself in the field. And when the new moon came, the king sat down to eat food. 25 The king sat on his seat, as at other times, on the seat by the wall. Jonathan sat opposite,[f] and Abner sat by Saul's side, (AY)but David's place was empty.

26 Yet Saul did not say anything that day, for he thought, “Something has happened to him. (AZ)He is not clean; surely he is not clean.” 27 But on (BA)the second day, the day after the new moon, (BB)David's place was empty. And Saul said to Jonathan his son, “Why has not the son of Jesse come to the meal, either yesterday or today?” 28 Jonathan answered Saul, (BC)“David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem. 29 He said, ‘Let me go, for our clan holds a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there. So now, if I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away and see my brothers.’ For this reason he has not come to the king's table.”

30 Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse, rebellious woman, do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother's nakedness? 31 For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established. Therefore send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.” 32 Then Jonathan answered Saul his father, (BD)“Why should he be put to death? What has he done?” 33 (BE)But Saul hurled his spear at him to strike him. So Jonathan knew (BF)that his father was determined to put David to death. 34 And Jonathan rose from the table in fierce anger and ate no food the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David, because his father had disgraced him.

35 In the morning Jonathan went out into the field to the appointment with David, and with him a little boy. 36 And he said to his boy, “Run and find the arrows that I shoot.” As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. 37 And when the boy came to the place of the arrow that Jonathan had shot, Jonathan called after the boy and said, (BG)“Is not the arrow beyond you?” 38 And Jonathan called after the boy, “Hurry! Be quick! Do not stay!” So Jonathan's boy gathered up the arrows and came to his master. 39 But the boy knew nothing. Only Jonathan and David knew the matter. 40 And Jonathan gave his weapons to his boy and said to him, “Go and carry them to the city.” 41 And as soon as the boy had gone, David rose from beside the stone heap[g] and fell on his face to the ground and bowed three times. And they kissed one another and wept with one another, David weeping the most. 42 Then Jonathan said to David, (BH)“Go in peace, because we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, (BI)‘The Lord shall be between me and you, (BJ)and between my offspring and your offspring, forever.’” And he rose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.[h]

David and the Holy Bread

21 [i] Then David came to (BK)Nob, to (BL)Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech (BM)came to meet David, trembling, and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no one with you?” And David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has charged me with a matter and said to me, ‘Let no one know anything of the matter about which I send you, and with which I have charged you.’ I have made an appointment with the young men for such and such a place. Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever is here.” And the priest answered David, “I have no common bread on hand, but there is (BN)holy bread—(BO)if the young men have kept themselves from women.” And David answered the priest, “Truly women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition. The vessels of the young men are holy even when it is an ordinary journey. How much more today will their vessels be holy?” So the priest gave him (BP)the holy bread, for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, (BQ)which is removed from before the Lord, to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away.

Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord. His name was (BR)Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul's herdsmen.

Then David said to Ahimelech, “Then have you not here a spear or a sword at hand? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste.” And the priest said, (BS)“The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you struck down in (BT)the Valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you will take that, take it, for there is none but that here.” And David said, “There is none like that; give it to me.”

David Flees to Gath

10 And David rose and fled that day from Saul and went to (BU)Achish the king of Gath. 11 And the servants of Achish said to him, “Is not this David the king of the land? (BV)Did they not sing to one another of him in dances,

‘Saul has struck down his thousands,
    and David his ten thousands’?”

12 And David (BW)took these words to heart and was much afraid of Achish the king of Gath. 13 So he changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands and made marks on the doors of the gate and let his spittle run down his beard. 14 Then Achish said to his servants, “Behold, you see the man is mad. Why then have you brought him to me? 15 Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to behave as a madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?”

David at the Cave of Adullam

22 David departed from there and escaped to (BX)the cave of (BY)Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father's house heard it, they went down there to him. (BZ)And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul,[j] gathered to him. And he became commander over them. And there were with him (CA)about four hundred men.

And David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab. And he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother stay[k] with you, till I know what God will do for me.” And he left them with the king of Moab, and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold. Then the prophet (CB)Gad said to David, “Do not remain in the stronghold; depart, and go into the land of Judah.” So David departed and went into the forest of Hereth.

Saul Kills the Priests at Nob

Now Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men who were with him. Saul was sitting at Gibeah under (CC)the tamarisk tree on the height with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him. And Saul said to his servants who stood about him, “Hear now, people of Benjamin; will the son of Jesse (CD)give every one of you fields and vineyards, will he make you all commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, that all of you have conspired against me? No one discloses to me (CE)when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse. None of you (CF)is sorry for me or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, (CG)to lie in wait, as at this day.” Then answered (CH)Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, “I saw the son of Jesse (CI)coming to Nob, to (CJ)Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, 10 (CK)and he inquired of the Lord for him and (CL)gave him provisions and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”

11 Then the king sent to summon Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests who were at Nob, and all of them came to the king. 12 And Saul said, “Hear now, son of Ahitub.” And he answered, “Here I am, my lord.” 13 And Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread and a sword and (CM)have inquired of God for him, so that he has risen against me, (CN)to lie in wait, as at this day?” 14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, “And who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and captain over[l] your bodyguard, and honored in your house? 15 Is today the first time (CO)that I have inquired of God for him? No! Let not the king impute anything to his servant or to all the house of my father, for your servant has known nothing of all this, (CP)much or little.” 16 And the king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father's house.” 17 And the king said to (CQ)the guard who stood about him, “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because their hand also is with David, and they knew that he fled and did not disclose it to me.” But the servants of the king would not put out their hand to strike the priests of the Lord. 18 Then the king said to Doeg, “You turn and strike the priests.” And Doeg the Edomite turned and struck down the priests, (CR)and he killed on that day eighty-five persons who wore the linen ephod. 19 And Nob, the city of the priests, he put to the sword; (CS)both man and woman, child and infant, ox, donkey and sheep, he put to the sword.

20 But one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named (CT)Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. 21 And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord. 22 And David said to Abiathar, “I knew on that day, (CU)when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have occasioned the death of all the persons of your father's house. 23 (CV)Stay with me; do not be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life. With me you shall be in safekeeping.”

David Saves the City of Keilah

23 Now they told David, “Behold, the Philistines are fighting against (CW)Keilah and are robbing the threshing floors.” Therefore David (CX)inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?” And the Lord said to David, “Go and attack the Philistines and save Keilah.” But David's men said to him, “Behold, we are afraid here in Judah; how much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?” Then David (CY)inquired of the Lord again. And the Lord answered him, “Arise, go down to Keilah, (CZ)for I will give the Philistines into your hand.” And David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines and brought away their livestock and struck them with a great blow. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.

(DA)When Abiathar the son of Ahimelech had fled to David to Keilah, he had come down with an ephod in his hand. Now it was told Saul that David had come to Keilah. And Saul said, “God has given him into my hand, for he has shut himself in by entering a town that has gates and bars.” And Saul summoned all the people to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men. David knew that Saul was plotting harm against him. And he said to Abiathar the priest, (DB)“Bring the ephod here.” 10 Then David said, “O Lord, the God of Israel, your servant has surely heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah, to destroy the city on my account. 11 Will the men of Keilah surrender me into his hand? Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? O Lord, the God of Israel, please tell your servant.” And the Lord said, “He will come down.” 12 Then David said, “Will the men of Keilah surrender me and my men into the hand of Saul?” And the Lord said, (DC)“They will surrender you.” 13 Then David and his men, (DD)who were about six hundred, arose and departed from Keilah, and they went (DE)wherever they could go. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he gave up the expedition. 14 And David remained in the strongholds in the wilderness, in the hill country (DF)of the wilderness of (DG)Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God did not give him into his hand.

Saul Pursues David

15 David saw that Saul had come out to seek his life. David was in the wilderness of Ziph at Horesh. 16 And Jonathan, Saul's son, rose and went to David at Horesh, and strengthened his hand in God. 17 And he said to him, “Do not fear, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you. You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you. (DH)Saul my father also knows this.” 18 (DI)And the two of them made a covenant before the Lord. David remained at Horesh, and Jonathan went home.

19 (DJ)Then the Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah, saying, “Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hachilah, which is south of (DK)Jeshimon? 20 Now come down, O king, according to all your heart's desire to come down, (DL)and our part shall be to surrender him into the king's hand.” 21 And Saul said, (DM)“May you be blessed by the Lord, (DN)for you have had compassion on me. 22 Go, make yet more sure. Know and see the place where his foot is, and who has seen him there, for it is told me that he is very cunning. 23 See therefore and take note of all the lurking places where he hides, and come back to me with sure information. Then I will go with you. And if he is in the land, I will search him out among all the thousands of Judah.” 24 And they arose and went to Ziph ahead of Saul.

Now David and his men were (DO)in the wilderness of Maon, (DP)in the Arabah to the south of (DQ)Jeshimon. 25 And Saul and his men went to seek him. And David was told, so he went down to the rock and lived in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon. 26 Saul went on one side of the mountain, and David and his men on the other side of the mountain. And David was hurrying to get away from Saul. As Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them, 27 a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Hurry and come, for the Philistines have made a raid against the land.” 28 So Saul returned from pursuing after David and went against the Philistines. Therefore that place was called the Rock of Escape.[m] 29 [n] And David went up from there and lived in the strongholds of (DR)Engedi.

David Spares Saul's Life

24 [o] (DS)When Saul returned from following the Philistines, he was told, “Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.” Then Saul took (DT)three thousand chosen men out of all Israel and went to seek David and his men in front of the Wildgoats' Rocks. And he came to the sheepfolds by the way, where there was a cave, and Saul went in (DU)to relieve himself.[p] Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost parts (DV)of the cave. And the men of David said to him, (DW)“Here is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘Behold, I will give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.’” Then David arose and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul's robe. And afterward (DX)David's heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul's robe. He said to his men, (DY)“The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord's anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is (DZ)the Lord's anointed.” So David persuaded his men with these words (EA)and did not permit them to attack Saul. And Saul rose up and left the cave and went on his way.

Afterward David also arose and went out of the cave, and called after Saul, “My lord the king!” And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth and paid homage. And David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to the words of men who say, ‘Behold, David seeks your harm’? 10 Behold, this day your eyes have seen how the Lord gave you today into my hand in the cave. (EB)And some told me to kill you, but I spared you.[q] I said, ‘I will not put out my hand against my lord, (EC)for he is the Lord's anointed.’ 11 See, my father, see the corner of your robe in my hand. For by the fact that I cut off the corner of your robe and did not kill you, you may know and see that (ED)there is no wrong or treason in my hands. I have not sinned against you, though (EE)you hunt my life to take it. 12 (EF)May the Lord judge between me and you, may the Lord avenge me against you, but my hand shall not be against you. 13 As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘Out of the wicked comes wickedness.’ But my hand shall not be against you. 14 After whom has the king of Israel come out? After whom do you pursue? (EG)After a dead dog! (EH)After a flea! 15 (EI)May the Lord therefore be judge and give sentence between me and you, and see to it and (EJ)plead my cause and deliver me from your hand.”

16 As soon as David had finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, (EK)“Is this your voice, my son David?” And Saul lifted up his voice and wept. 17 He said to David, “You are more righteous than I, (EL)for you have repaid me good, whereas I have repaid you evil. 18 And you have declared this day how you have dealt well with me, in that you did not kill me when the Lord put me into your hands. 19 For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away safe? So may the Lord reward you with good for what you have done to me this day. 20 And now, behold, (EM)I know that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand. 21 (EN)Swear to me therefore by the Lord that you will not cut off my offspring after me, and (EO)that you will not destroy my name out of my father's house.” 22 And David swore this to Saul. Then Saul went home, but David and his men went up (EP)to the stronghold.

The Death of Samuel

25 (EQ)Now Samuel died. And all Israel assembled (ER)and mourned for him, and they buried him (ES)in his house at (ET)Ramah.

David and Abigail

Then David rose and went down to (EU)the wilderness of Paran. And there was a man in (EV)Maon whose business was in (EW)Carmel. The man was very rich; he had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. (EX)He was shearing his sheep in Carmel. Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. The woman was discerning and beautiful, but the man was harsh and badly behaved; (EY)he was a Calebite. David heard in the wilderness that Nabal (EZ)was shearing his sheep. So David sent ten young men. And David said to the young men, “Go up to Carmel, and go to Nabal and greet him in my name. And thus you shall greet him: (FA)‘Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have. I hear that you have shearers. Now your shepherds have been with us, and we did them no harm, (FB)and they missed nothing all the time they were in Carmel. Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find favor in your eyes, for we come (FC)on a feast day. Please give whatever you have at hand to your servants and to your son David.’”

When David's young men came, they said all this to Nabal in the name of David, and then they waited. 10 And Nabal answered David's servants, (FD)“Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? (FE)There are many servants these days who are breaking away from their masters. 11 Shall I take (FF)my bread and my water and my meat that I have killed for my shearers and give it to (FG)men who come from I do not know where?” 12 So David's young men turned away and came back and told him all this. 13 And David said to his men, “Every man strap on his sword!” And every man of them strapped on his sword. David also strapped on his sword. And (FH)about four hundred men went up after David, (FI)while two hundred (FJ)remained with the baggage.

14 But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, “Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to greet our master, and he railed at them. 15 Yet the men were very good to us, and we suffered no harm, (FK)and we did not miss anything when we were in the fields, as long as we went with them. 16 They were (FL)a wall to us both by night and by day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep. 17 Now therefore know this and consider what you should do, (FM)for harm is determined against our master and against all his house, and he is such (FN)a worthless man that one cannot speak to him.”

18 Then Abigail made haste and took two hundred loaves and two skins of wine and five sheep already prepared and five seahs[r] of parched grain and a hundred clusters of raisins and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on donkeys. 19 And she said to her young men, “Go on before me; behold, I come after you.” But she did not tell her husband Nabal. 20 And as she rode on the donkey and came down under cover of the mountain, behold, David and his men came down toward her, and she met them. 21 Now David had said, “Surely in vain have I guarded all that this fellow has in the wilderness, (FO)so that nothing was missed of all that belonged to him, and he has (FP)returned me evil for good. 22 (FQ)God do so to the enemies of David[s] and more also, if by morning I leave so much as one male of all who belong to him.”

23 When Abigail saw David, she hurried (FR)and got down from the donkey (FS)and fell before David on her face and bowed to the ground. 24 She fell at his feet and said, (FT)“On me alone, my lord, be the guilt. Please let your servant speak in your ears, and hear the words of your servant. 25 Let not my lord regard (FU)this worthless fellow, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. Nabal[t] is his name, and folly is with him. But I your servant did not see the young men of my lord, whom you sent. 26 Now then, my lord, (FV)as the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, because (FW)the Lord has restrained you from bloodguilt and from (FX)saving with your own hand, now then (FY)let your enemies and those who seek to do evil to my lord be as Nabal. 27 And now let this (FZ)present that your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow my lord. 28 Please forgive the trespass of your servant. For the Lord will certainly make my lord (GA)a sure house, because my lord (GB)is fighting the battles of the Lord, and evil shall not be found in you so long as you live. 29 If men rise up to pursue you and to seek your life, the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living in the care of the Lord your God. And the lives of your enemies (GC)he shall sling out as from the hollow of a sling. 30 And when the Lord has done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you and has appointed you prince[u] over Israel, 31 my lord shall have no cause of grief or pangs of conscience for having shed blood without cause or for my lord (GD)working salvation himself. And when the Lord has dealt well with my lord, then remember your servant.”

32 And David said to Abigail, (GE)“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! 33 Blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you, (GF)who have kept me this day from bloodguilt (GG)and from working salvation with my own hand! 34 For as surely (GH)as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, (GI)who has restrained me from hurting you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, truly by morning there had not been left to Nabal so much as one male.” 35 Then David received from her hand what she had brought him. And he said to her, (GJ)“Go up in peace to your house. See, I have obeyed your voice, and I have granted your petition.”

36 And Abigail came to Nabal, and behold, (GK)he was holding a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. And Nabal's heart (GL)was merry within him, for he was very drunk. So she told him nothing (GM)at all until the morning light. 37 In the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. 38 And about ten days later (GN)the Lord struck Nabal, and he died.

39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, (GO)“Blessed be the Lord who has (GP)avenged the insult I received at the hand of Nabal, (GQ)and has kept back his servant from wrongdoing. (GR)The Lord has returned the evil of Nabal on his own head.” Then David sent and (GS)spoke to Abigail, to take her as his wife. 40 When the servants of David came to Abigail at Carmel, they said to her, “David has sent us to you to take you to him as his wife.” 41 And she rose (GT)and bowed with her face to the ground and said, “Behold, your handmaid is a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.” 42 And Abigail hurried and rose and mounted a donkey, and her five young women attended her. She followed the messengers of David and became his wife.

43 David also took Ahinoam of (GU)Jezreel, (GV)and both of them became his wives. 44 Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.

Saul Tries to Kill David

19 Saul told his son Jonathan(A) and all the attendants to kill(B) David. But Jonathan had taken a great liking to David and warned him, “My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding(C) and stay there. I will go out and stand with my father in the field where you are. I’ll speak(D) to him about you and will tell you what I find out.”

Jonathan spoke(E) well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king do wrong(F) to his servant David; he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you greatly. He took his life(G) in his hands when he killed the Philistine. The Lord won a great victory(H) for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent(I) man like David by killing him for no reason?”

Saul listened to Jonathan and took this oath: “As surely as the Lord lives, David will not be put to death.”

So Jonathan called David and told him the whole conversation. He brought him to Saul, and David was with Saul as before.(J)

Once more war broke out, and David went out and fought the Philistines. He struck them with such force that they fled before him.

But an evil[a] spirit(K) from the Lord came on Saul as he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand. While David was playing the lyre,(L) 10 Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear, but David eluded(M) him as Saul drove the spear into the wall. That night David made good his escape.

11 Saul sent men to David’s house to watch(N) it and to kill him in the morning.(O) But Michal, David’s wife, warned him, “If you don’t run for your life tonight, tomorrow you’ll be killed.” 12 So Michal let David down through a window,(P) and he fled and escaped. 13 Then Michal took an idol(Q) and laid it on the bed, covering it with a garment and putting some goats’ hair at the head.

14 When Saul sent the men to capture David, Michal said,(R) “He is ill.”

15 Then Saul sent the men back to see David and told them, “Bring him up to me in his bed so that I may kill him.” 16 But when the men entered, there was the idol in the bed, and at the head was some goats’ hair.

17 Saul said to Michal, “Why did you deceive me like this and send my enemy away so that he escaped?”

Michal told him, “He said to me, ‘Let me get away. Why should I kill you?’”

18 When David had fled and made his escape, he went to Samuel at Ramah(S) and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to Naioth and stayed there. 19 Word came to Saul: “David is in Naioth at Ramah”; 20 so he sent men to capture him. But when they saw a group of prophets(T) prophesying, with Samuel standing there as their leader, the Spirit of God came on(U) Saul’s men, and they also prophesied.(V) 21 Saul was told about it, and he sent more men, and they prophesied too. Saul sent men a third time, and they also prophesied. 22 Finally, he himself left for Ramah and went to the great cistern at Seku. And he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?”

“Over in Naioth at Ramah,” they said.

23 So Saul went to Naioth at Ramah. But the Spirit of God came even on him, and he walked along prophesying(W) until he came to Naioth. 24 He stripped(X) off his garments, and he too prophesied in Samuel’s(Y) presence. He lay naked all that day and all that night. This is why people say, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”(Z)

David and Jonathan

20 Then David fled from Naioth at Ramah and went to Jonathan and asked, “What have I done? What is my crime? How have I wronged(AA) your father, that he is trying to kill me?”(AB)

“Never!” Jonathan replied. “You are not going to die! Look, my father doesn’t do anything, great or small, without letting me know. Why would he hide this from me? It isn’t so!”

But David took an oath(AC) and said, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said to himself, ‘Jonathan must not know this or he will be grieved.’ Yet as surely as the Lord lives and as you live, there is only a step between me and death.”

Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do for you.”

So David said, “Look, tomorrow is the New Moon feast,(AD) and I am supposed to dine with the king; but let me go and hide(AE) in the field until the evening of the day after tomorrow. If your father misses me at all, tell him, ‘David earnestly asked my permission(AF) to hurry to Bethlehem,(AG) his hometown, because an annual(AH) sacrifice is being made there for his whole clan.’ If he says, ‘Very well,’ then your servant is safe. But if he loses his temper,(AI) you can be sure that he is determined(AJ) to harm me. As for you, show kindness to your servant, for you have brought him into a covenant(AK) with you before the Lord. If I am guilty, then kill(AL) me yourself! Why hand me over to your father?”

“Never!” Jonathan said. “If I had the least inkling that my father was determined to harm you, wouldn’t I tell you?”

10 David asked, “Who will tell me if your father answers you harshly?”

11 “Come,” Jonathan said, “let’s go out into the field.” So they went there together.

12 Then Jonathan said to David, “I swear by the Lord, the God of Israel, that I will surely sound(AM) out my father by this time the day after tomorrow! If he is favorably disposed toward you, will I not send you word and let you know? 13 But if my father intends to harm you, may the Lord deal with Jonathan, be it ever so severely,(AN) if I do not let you know and send you away in peace. May the Lord be with(AO) you as he has been with my father. 14 But show me unfailing kindness(AP) like the Lord’s kindness as long as I live, so that I may not be killed, 15 and do not ever cut off your kindness from my family(AQ)—not even when the Lord has cut off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.”

16 So Jonathan(AR) made a covenant(AS) with the house of David, saying, “May the Lord call David’s enemies to account.(AT) 17 And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath(AU) out of love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself.

18 Then Jonathan said to David, “Tomorrow is the New Moon feast. You will be missed, because your seat will be empty.(AV) 19 The day after tomorrow, toward evening, go to the place where you hid(AW) when this trouble began, and wait by the stone Ezel. 20 I will shoot three arrows(AX) to the side of it, as though I were shooting at a target. 21 Then I will send a boy and say, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I say to him, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you; bring them here,’ then come, because, as surely as the Lord lives, you are safe; there is no danger. 22 But if I say to the boy, ‘Look, the arrows are beyond(AY) you,’ then you must go, because the Lord has sent you away. 23 And about the matter you and I discussed—remember, the Lord is witness(AZ) between you and me forever.”

24 So David hid in the field, and when the New Moon feast(BA) came, the king sat down to eat. 25 He sat in his customary place by the wall, opposite Jonathan,[b] and Abner sat next to Saul, but David’s place was empty.(BB) 26 Saul said nothing that day, for he thought, “Something must have happened to David to make him ceremonially unclean—surely he is unclean.(BC) 27 But the next day, the second day of the month, David’s place was empty again. Then Saul said to his son Jonathan, “Why hasn’t the son of Jesse come to the meal, either yesterday or today?”

28 Jonathan answered, “David earnestly asked me for permission(BD) to go to Bethlehem. 29 He said, ‘Let me go, because our family is observing a sacrifice(BE) in the town and my brother has ordered me to be there. If I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away to see my brothers.’ That is why he has not come to the king’s table.”

30 Saul’s anger flared up at Jonathan and he said to him, “You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don’t I know that you have sided with the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of the mother who bore you? 31 As long as the son of Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your kingdom(BF) will be established. Now send someone to bring him to me, for he must die!”

32 “Why(BG) should he be put to death? What(BH) has he done?” Jonathan asked his father. 33 But Saul hurled his spear at him to kill him. Then Jonathan knew that his father intended(BI) to kill David.

34 Jonathan got up from the table in fierce anger; on that second day of the feast he did not eat, because he was grieved at his father’s shameful treatment of David.

35 In the morning Jonathan went out to the field for his meeting with David. He had a small boy with him, 36 and he said to the boy, “Run and find the arrows I shoot.” As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. 37 When the boy came to the place where Jonathan’s arrow had fallen, Jonathan called out after him, “Isn’t the arrow beyond(BJ) you?” 38 Then he shouted, “Hurry! Go quickly! Don’t stop!” The boy picked up the arrow and returned to his master. 39 (The boy knew nothing about all this; only Jonathan and David knew.) 40 Then Jonathan gave his weapons to the boy and said, “Go, carry them back to town.”

41 After the boy had gone, David got up from the south side of the stone and bowed down before Jonathan three times, with his face to the ground.(BK) Then they kissed each other and wept together—but David wept the most.

42 Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace,(BL) for we have sworn friendship(BM) with each other in the name of the Lord,(BN) saying, ‘The Lord is witness(BO) between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants forever.(BP)’” Then David left, and Jonathan went back to the town.[c]

David at Nob

21 [d]David went to Nob,(BQ) to Ahimelek the priest. Ahimelek trembled(BR) when he met him, and asked, “Why are you alone? Why is no one with you?”

David answered Ahimelek the priest, “The king sent me on a mission and said to me, ‘No one is to know anything about the mission I am sending you on.’ As for my men, I have told them to meet me at a certain place. Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever you can find.”

But the priest answered David, “I don’t have any ordinary bread(BS) on hand; however, there is some consecrated(BT) bread here—provided the men have kept(BU) themselves from women.”

David replied, “Indeed women have been kept from us, as usual(BV) whenever[e] I set out. The men’s bodies are holy(BW) even on missions that are not holy. How much more so today!” So the priest gave him the consecrated bread,(BX) since there was no bread there except the bread of the Presence that had been removed from before the Lord and replaced by hot bread on the day it was taken away.

Now one of Saul’s servants was there that day, detained before the Lord; he was Doeg(BY) the Edomite,(BZ) Saul’s chief shepherd.

David asked Ahimelek, “Don’t you have a spear or a sword here? I haven’t brought my sword or any other weapon, because the king’s mission was urgent.”

The priest replied, “The sword(CA) of Goliath(CB) the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah,(CC) is here; it is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you want it, take it; there is no sword here but that one.”

David said, “There is none like it; give it to me.”

David at Gath

10 That day David fled from Saul and went(CD) to Achish king of Gath. 11 But the servants of Achish said to him, “Isn’t this David, the king of the land? Isn’t he the one they sing about in their dances:

“‘Saul has slain his thousands,
and David his tens of thousands’?”(CE)

12 David took these words to heart and was very much afraid of Achish king of Gath. 13 So he pretended to be insane(CF) in their presence; and while he was in their hands he acted like a madman, making marks on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard.

14 Achish said to his servants, “Look at the man! He is insane! Why bring him to me? 15 Am I so short of madmen that you have to bring this fellow here to carry on like this in front of me? Must this man come into my house?”

David at Adullam and Mizpah

22 David left Gath and escaped to the cave(CG) of Adullam.(CH) When his brothers and his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there. All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered(CI) around him, and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him.

From there David went to Mizpah in Moab and said to the king of Moab, “Would you let my father and mother come and stay with you until I learn what God will do for me?” So he left them with the king of Moab,(CJ) and they stayed with him as long as David was in the stronghold.

But the prophet Gad(CK) said to David, “Do not stay in the stronghold. Go into the land of Judah.” So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.(CL)

Saul Kills the Priests of Nob

Now Saul heard that David and his men had been discovered. And Saul was seated,(CM) spear in hand, under the tamarisk(CN) tree on the hill at Gibeah, with all his officials standing at his side. He said to them, “Listen, men of Benjamin! Will the son of Jesse give all of you fields and vineyards? Will he make all of you commanders(CO) of thousands and commanders of hundreds? Is that why you have all conspired(CP) against me? No one tells me when my son makes a covenant(CQ) with the son of Jesse.(CR) None of you is concerned(CS) about me or tells me that my son has incited my servant to lie in wait for me, as he does today.”

But Doeg(CT) the Edomite, who was standing with Saul’s officials, said, “I saw the son of Jesse come to Ahimelek son of Ahitub(CU) at Nob.(CV) 10 Ahimelek inquired(CW) of the Lord for him; he also gave him provisions(CX) and the sword(CY) of Goliath the Philistine.”

11 Then the king sent for the priest Ahimelek son of Ahitub and all the men of his family, who were the priests at Nob, and they all came to the king. 12 Saul said, “Listen now, son of Ahitub.”

“Yes, my lord,” he answered.

13 Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired(CZ) against me, you and the son of Jesse, giving him bread and a sword and inquiring of God for him, so that he has rebelled against me and lies in wait for me, as he does today?”

14 Ahimelek answered the king, “Who(DA) of all your servants is as loyal as David, the king’s son-in-law, captain of your bodyguard and highly respected in your household? 15 Was that day the first time I inquired of God for him? Of course not! Let not the king accuse your servant or any of his father’s family, for your servant knows nothing at all about this whole affair.”

16 But the king said, “You will surely die, Ahimelek, you and your whole family.(DB)

17 Then the king ordered the guards at his side: “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because they too have sided with David. They knew he was fleeing, yet they did not tell me.”

But the king’s officials were unwilling(DC) to raise a hand to strike the priests of the Lord.

18 The king then ordered Doeg, “You turn and strike down the priests.”(DD) So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck them down. That day he killed eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.(DE) 19 He also put to the sword(DF) Nob,(DG) the town of the priests, with its men and women, its children and infants, and its cattle, donkeys and sheep.

20 But one son of Ahimelek son of Ahitub,(DH) named Abiathar,(DI) escaped and fled to join David.(DJ) 21 He told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord. 22 Then David said to Abiathar, “That day, when Doeg(DK) the Edomite was there, I knew he would be sure to tell Saul. I am responsible for the death of your whole family. 23 Stay with me; don’t be afraid. The man who wants to kill you(DL) is trying to kill me too. You will be safe with me.”

David Saves Keilah

23 When David was told, “Look, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah(DM) and are looting the threshing floors,”(DN) he inquired(DO) of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?”

The Lord answered him, “Go, attack the Philistines and save Keilah.”

But David’s men said to him, “Here in Judah we are afraid. How much more, then, if we go to Keilah against the Philistine forces!”

Once again David inquired(DP) of the Lord, and the Lord answered him, “Go down to Keilah, for I am going to give the Philistines(DQ) into your hand.(DR) So David and his men went to Keilah, fought the Philistines and carried off their livestock. He inflicted heavy losses on the Philistines and saved the people of Keilah. (Now Abiathar(DS) son of Ahimelek had brought the ephod(DT) down with him when he fled to David at Keilah.)

Saul Pursues David

Saul was told that David had gone to Keilah, and he said, “God has delivered him into my hands,(DU) for David has imprisoned himself by entering a town with gates and bars.”(DV) And Saul called up all his forces for battle, to go down to Keilah to besiege David and his men.

When David learned that Saul was plotting against him, he said to Abiathar(DW) the priest, “Bring the ephod.(DX) 10 David said, “Lord, God of Israel, your servant has heard definitely that Saul plans to come to Keilah and destroy the town on account of me. 11 Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me to him? Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? Lord, God of Israel, tell your servant.”

And the Lord said, “He will.”

12 Again David asked, “Will the citizens of Keilah surrender(DY) me and my men to Saul?”

And the Lord said, “They will.”

13 So David and his men,(DZ) about six hundred in number, left Keilah and kept moving from place to place. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he did not go there.

14 David stayed in the wilderness(EA) strongholds and in the hills of the Desert of Ziph.(EB) Day after day Saul searched(EC) for him, but God did not(ED) give David into his hands.

15 While David was at Horesh in the Desert of Ziph, he learned that[f] Saul had come out to take his life.(EE) 16 And Saul’s son Jonathan went to David at Horesh and helped him find strength(EF) in God. 17 “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “My father Saul will not lay a hand on you. You will be king(EG) over Israel, and I will be second to you. Even my father Saul knows this.” 18 The two of them made a covenant(EH) before the Lord. Then Jonathan went home, but David remained at Horesh.

19 The Ziphites(EI) went up to Saul at Gibeah and said, “Is not David hiding among us(EJ) in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hakilah,(EK) south of Jeshimon? 20 Now, Your Majesty, come down whenever it pleases you to do so, and we will be responsible for giving(EL) him into your hands.”

21 Saul replied, “The Lord bless(EM) you for your concern(EN) for me. 22 Go and get more information. Find out where David usually goes and who has seen him there. They tell me he is very crafty. 23 Find out about all the hiding places he uses and come back to me with definite information. Then I will go with you; if he is in the area, I will track(EO) him down among all the clans of Judah.”

24 So they set out and went to Ziph ahead of Saul. Now David and his men were in the Desert of Maon,(EP) in the Arabah south of Jeshimon.(EQ) 25 Saul and his men began the search, and when David was told about it, he went down to the rock and stayed in the Desert of Maon. When Saul heard this, he went into the Desert of Maon in pursuit of David.

26 Saul(ER) was going along one side of the mountain, and David and his men were on the other side, hurrying to get away from Saul. As Saul and his forces were closing in on David and his men to capture them, 27 a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Come quickly! The Philistines are raiding the land.” 28 Then Saul broke off his pursuit of David and went to meet the Philistines. That is why they call this place Sela Hammahlekoth.[g] 29 And David went up from there and lived in the strongholds(ES) of En Gedi.[h](ET)

David Spares Saul’s Life

24 [i]After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, “David is in the Desert of En Gedi.(EU) So Saul took three thousand able young men from all Israel and set out to look(EV) for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats.

He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave(EW) was there, and Saul went in to relieve(EX) himself. David and his men were far back in the cave. The men said, “This is the day the Lord spoke(EY) of when he said[j] to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’”(EZ) Then David crept up unnoticed and cut(FA) off a corner of Saul’s robe.

Afterward, David was conscience-stricken(FB) for having cut off a corner of his robe. He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed,(FC) or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.” With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.

Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.(FD) He said to Saul, “Why do you listen(FE) when men say, ‘David is bent on harming(FF) you’? 10 This day you have seen with your own eyes how the Lord delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared(FG) you; I said, ‘I will not lay my hand on my lord, because he is the Lord’s anointed.’ 11 See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut(FH) off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty(FI) of wrongdoing(FJ) or rebellion. I have not wronged(FK) you, but you are hunting(FL) me down to take my life.(FM) 12 May the Lord judge(FN) between you and me. And may the Lord avenge(FO) the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you. 13 As the old saying goes, ‘From evildoers come evil deeds,(FP)’ so my hand will not touch you.

14 “Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Who are you pursuing? A dead dog?(FQ) A flea?(FR) 15 May the Lord be our judge(FS) and decide(FT) between us. May he consider my cause and uphold(FU) it; may he vindicate(FV) me by delivering(FW) me from your hand.”

16 When David finished saying this, Saul asked, “Is that your voice,(FX) David my son?” And he wept aloud. 17 “You are more righteous than I,”(FY) he said. “You have treated me well,(FZ) but I have treated you badly.(GA) 18 You have just now told me about the good you did to me; the Lord delivered(GB) me into your hands, but you did not kill me. 19 When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the Lord reward(GC) you well for the way you treated me today. 20 I know that you will surely be king(GD) and that the kingdom(GE) of Israel will be established in your hands. 21 Now swear(GF) to me by the Lord that you will not kill off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s family.(GG)

22 So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.(GH)

David, Nabal and Abigail

25 Now Samuel died,(GI) and all Israel assembled and mourned(GJ) for him; and they buried him at his home in Ramah.(GK) Then David moved down into the Desert of Paran.[k]

A certain man in Maon,(GL) who had property there at Carmel, was very wealthy.(GM) He had a thousand goats and three thousand sheep, which he was shearing(GN) in Carmel. His name was Nabal and his wife’s name was Abigail.(GO) She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband was surly and mean in his dealings—he was a Calebite.(GP)

While David was in the wilderness, he heard that Nabal was shearing sheep. So he sent ten young men and said to them, “Go up to Nabal at Carmel and greet him in my name. Say to him: ‘Long life to you! Good health(GQ) to you and your household! And good health to all that is yours!(GR)

“‘Now I hear that it is sheep-shearing time. When your shepherds were with us, we did not mistreat(GS) them, and the whole time they were at Carmel nothing of theirs was missing. Ask your own servants and they will tell you. Therefore be favorable toward my men, since we come at a festive time. Please give your servants and your son David whatever(GT) you can find for them.’”

When David’s men arrived, they gave Nabal this message in David’s name. Then they waited.

10 Nabal answered David’s servants, “Who(GU) is this David? Who is this son of Jesse? Many servants are breaking away from their masters these days. 11 Why should I take my bread(GV) and water, and the meat I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give it to men coming from who knows where?”

12 David’s men turned around and went back. When they arrived, they reported every word. 13 David said to his men(GW), “Each of you strap on your sword!” So they did, and David strapped his on as well. About four hundred men went(GX) up with David, while two hundred stayed with the supplies.(GY)

14 One of the servants told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, “David sent messengers from the wilderness to give our master his greetings,(GZ) but he hurled insults at them. 15 Yet these men were very good to us. They did not mistreat(HA) us, and the whole time we were out in the fields near them nothing was missing.(HB) 16 Night and day they were a wall(HC) around us the whole time we were herding our sheep near them. 17 Now think it over and see what you can do, because disaster is hanging over our master and his whole household. He is such a wicked(HD) man that no one can talk to him.”

18 Abigail acted quickly. She took two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five dressed sheep, five seahs[l] of roasted grain,(HE) a hundred cakes of raisins(HF) and two hundred cakes of pressed figs, and loaded them on donkeys.(HG) 19 Then she told her servants, “Go on ahead;(HH) I’ll follow you.” But she did not tell(HI) her husband Nabal.

20 As she came riding her donkey into a mountain ravine, there were David and his men descending toward her, and she met them. 21 David had just said, “It’s been useless—all my watching over this fellow’s property in the wilderness so that nothing of his was missing.(HJ) He has paid(HK) me back evil(HL) for good. 22 May God deal with David,[m] be it ever so severely,(HM) if by morning I leave alive one male(HN) of all who belong to him!”

23 When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off her donkey and bowed down before David with her face to the ground.(HO) 24 She fell at his feet and said: “Pardon your servant, my lord,(HP) and let me speak to you; hear what your servant has to say. 25 Please pay no attention, my lord, to that wicked man Nabal. He is just like his name—his name means Fool(HQ),(HR) and folly goes with him. And as for me, your servant, I did not see the men my lord sent. 26 And now, my lord, as surely as the Lord your God lives and as you live, since the Lord has kept you from bloodshed(HS) and from avenging(HT) yourself with your own hands, may your enemies and all who are intent on harming my lord be like Nabal.(HU) 27 And let this gift,(HV) which your servant has brought to my lord, be given to the men who follow you.

28 “Please forgive(HW) your servant’s presumption. The Lord your God will certainly make a lasting(HX) dynasty for my lord, because you fight the Lord’s battles,(HY) and no wrongdoing(HZ) will be found in you as long as you live. 29 Even though someone is pursuing you to take your life,(IA) the life of my lord will be bound securely in the bundle of the living by the Lord your God, but the lives of your enemies he will hurl(IB) away as from the pocket of a sling.(IC) 30 When the Lord has fulfilled for my lord every good thing he promised concerning him and has appointed him ruler(ID) over Israel, 31 my lord will not have on his conscience the staggering burden of needless bloodshed or of having avenged himself. And when the Lord your God has brought my lord success, remember(IE) your servant.”(IF)

32 David said to Abigail, “Praise(IG) be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you today to meet me. 33 May you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed(IH) this day and from avenging myself with my own hands. 34 Otherwise, as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, who has kept me from harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, not one male belonging to Nabal(II) would have been left alive by daybreak.”

35 Then David accepted from her hand what she had brought him and said, “Go home in peace. I have heard your words and granted(IJ) your request.”

36 When Abigail went to Nabal, he was in the house holding a banquet like that of a king. He was in high(IK) spirits and very drunk.(IL) So she told(IM) him nothing at all until daybreak. 37 Then in the morning, when Nabal was sober, his wife told him all these things, and his heart failed him and he became like a stone.(IN) 38 About ten days later, the Lord struck(IO) Nabal and he died.

39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Praise be to the Lord, who has upheld my cause against Nabal for treating me with contempt. He has kept his servant from doing wrong and has brought Nabal’s wrongdoing down on his own head.”

Then David sent word to Abigail, asking her to become his wife. 40 His servants went to Carmel and said to Abigail, “David has sent us to you to take you to become his wife.”

41 She bowed down with her face to the ground and said, “I am your servant and am ready to serve you and wash the feet of my lord’s servants.” 42 Abigail(IP) quickly got on a donkey and, attended by her five female servants, went with David’s messengers and became his wife. 43 David had also married Ahinoam(IQ) of Jezreel, and they both were his wives.(IR) 44 But Saul had given his daughter Michal, David’s wife, to Paltiel[n](IS) son of Laish, who was from Gallim.(IT)
