12 Now David was (A)the son of [a]the (B)Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, the man whose name was Jesse, and (C)he had eight sons. And [b]Jesse was old in the days of Saul, advanced in years among men. 13 The three older sons of Jesse had [c]followed Saul to the battle. And (D)the names of his three sons who had gone into the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and second to him, Abinadab, and the third, Shammah. 14 So (E)David was the youngest. Now the three oldest followed Saul, 15 (F)but David went back and forth from Saul (G)to tend his father’s flock at Bethlehem. 16 And the Philistine came forward morning and evening, and took his stand for forty days.

17 Then Jesse said to his son David, “(H)Take now for your brothers an ephah of this roasted grain and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to your brothers. 18 (I)Bring also these ten slices of cheese to the commander of their thousand, (J)and look into the well-being of your brothers and bring back [d]confirmation from them. 19 For Saul and they and all the men of Israel are in the Valley of Elah, fighting the Philistines.”

David Accepts the Challenge

20 So David got up early in the morning and left the flock with a keeper, and took the supplies and went as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the (K)entrenchment encircling the camp while the army was going out in battle formation, shouting the war cry. 21 Israel and the Philistines drew up in battle formation, army against army. 22 Then David left the (L)baggage in the [e]care of the baggage keeper and ran to the battle line. And he entered and [f]greeted his brothers. 23 As he was speaking with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine from Gath named Goliath, was coming up from the army of the Philistines, and he spoke (M)these same words; and David heard him.

24 When all the men of Israel saw the man, they fled from him and were very fearful. 25 And the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who is coming up? Surely he is coming up to defy Israel. And it will be that the king will make the man who kills him wealthy with great riches, and (N)will give him his daughter and make his father’s house [g]free in Israel.”

26 Then David said to the men who were standing by him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and rids Israel of (O)the disgrace? For who is this (P)uncircumcised Philistine, that he has dared to (Q)defy the armies of (R)the living God?” 27 The people [h]answered him in agreement with this statement, saying, “(S)This is what will be done for the man who kills him.”

28 Now Eliab his oldest brother heard him when he spoke to the men; and (T)Eliab’s anger burned against David and he said, “Why is it that you have come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I myself know your insolence and the wickedness of your heart; for you have come down in order to see the battle.” 29 But David said, “What have I done now? Was it not just a [i]question?” 30 Then he turned [j]away from him to another and (U)said the same thing; and the people replied with the same words as [k]before.

David Kills Goliath

31 When the words that David spoke were heard, they informed [l]Saul, and he [m]sent for him. 32 And David said to Saul, “(V)May no one’s heart fail on account of him; (W)your servant will go and fight this Philistine!” 33 But Saul said to David, “(X)You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight him; for you are only a youth, while he has been a warrior since his youth.” 34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant was tending his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and took a sheep from the flock, 35 I went out after it and [n]attacked it, and (Y)rescued the sheep from its mouth; and when it rose up against me, I grabbed it by its mane and struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has [o]killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God.” 37 And David said, “(Z)The Lord who saved me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear, He will save me from the hand of this Philistine.” So Saul said to David, “(AA)Go, and may the Lord be with you.” 38 Then Saul clothed David with his military attire and put a bronze helmet on his head, and outfitted him with armor. 39 And David strapped on his sword over his military attire and struggled at walking, for he had not trained with the armor. So David said to Saul, “I cannot go with these, because I have not trained with them.” And David took them [p]off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand and chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the shepherd’s bag which he had, that is, in his shepherd’s pouch, and (AB)his sling was in his hand; and he approached the Philistine.

41 Then the Philistine came and approached David, with the shield-bearer in front of him. 42 When the Philistine looked and saw David, (AC)he was contemptuous of him; for he was only a youth, and [q](AD)reddish, with a handsome appearance. 43 So the Philistine said to David, “(AE)Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And (AF)the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 The Philistine also said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh (AG)to the birds of the sky and the [r]wild animals.” 45 But David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a [s]saber, (AH)but I come to you in the name of the Lord of armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I will strike you and remove your head from you. Then I will give the (AI)dead bodies of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky and the wild animals of the earth, (AJ)so that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that this entire assembly may know that (AK)the Lord does not save by sword or by spear; (AL)for the battle is the Lords, and He will hand you over to us!”

48 Then it happened, when the Philistine [t]came closer to meet David, that (AM)David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand into his bag and took from it a stone and slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead. And the stone penetrated his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.

50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with the sling and the stone: he struck the Philistine and killed him, and there was no sword in David’s hand. 51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine, and (AN)took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and finished him, and cut off his head with it. (AO)When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. 52 Then the men of Israel and Judah rose up and shouted, and they pursued the Philistines [u]as far as the valley, and to the gates of (AP)Ekron. And the Philistine dead [v]lay along the way to (AQ)Shaaraim, even to Gath and Ekron. 53 Then the sons of Israel returned from their close pursuit of the Philistines, and plundered their camps. 54 And David took the Philistine’s head and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his weapons in his tent.

12 Now David was the son of an Ephrathite(A) named Jesse,(B) who was from Bethlehem(C) in Judah. Jesse had eight(D) sons, and in Saul’s time he was very old. 13 Jesse’s three oldest sons had followed Saul to the war: The firstborn was Eliab;(E) the second, Abinadab;(F) and the third, Shammah.(G) 14 David was the youngest. The three oldest followed Saul, 15 but David went back and forth from Saul to tend(H) his father’s sheep(I) at Bethlehem.

16 For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand.

17 Now Jesse said to his son David, “Take this ephah[a](J) of roasted grain(K) and these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp. 18 Take along these ten cheeses to the commander of their unit. See how your brothers(L) are and bring back some assurance[b] from them. 19 They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines.”

20 Early in the morning David left the flock in the care of a shepherd, loaded up and set out, as Jesse had directed. He reached the camp as the army was going out to its battle positions, shouting the war cry. 21 Israel and the Philistines were drawing up their lines facing each other. 22 David left his things with the keeper of supplies,(M) ran to the battle lines and asked his brothers how they were. 23 As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual(N) defiance, and David heard it. 24 Whenever the Israelites saw the man, they all fled from him in great fear.

25 Now the Israelites had been saying, “Do you see how this man keeps coming out? He comes out to defy Israel. The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him. He will also give him his daughter(O) in marriage and will exempt his family from taxes(P) in Israel.”

26 David asked the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace(Q) from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised(R) Philistine that he should defy(S) the armies of the living(T) God?”

27 They repeated to him what they had been saying and told him, “This is what will be done for the man who kills him.”

28 When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger(U) at him and asked, “Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.”

29 “Now what have I done?” said David. “Can’t I even speak?” 30 He then turned away to someone else and brought up the same matter, and the men answered him as before. 31 What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, and Saul sent for him.

32 David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart(V) on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.”

33 Saul replied,(W) “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.”

34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion(X) or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized(Y) it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion(Z) and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 The Lord who rescued(AA) me from the paw of the lion(AB) and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”

Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with(AC) you.”

38 Then Saul dressed David in his own(AD) tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. 39 David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them.

“I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.

41 Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer(AE) in front of him, kept coming closer to David. 42 He looked David over and saw that he was little more than a boy, glowing with health and handsome,(AF) and he despised(AG) him. 43 He said to David, “Am I a dog,(AH) that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 “Come here,” he said, “and I’ll give your flesh to the birds(AI) and the wild animals!(AJ)

45 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin,(AK) but I come against you in the name(AL) of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.(AM) 46 This day the Lord will deliver(AN) you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses(AO) of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world(AP) will know that there is a God in Israel.(AQ) 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword(AR) or spear that the Lord saves;(AS) for the battle(AT) is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”

48 As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. 49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.

50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling(AU) and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.

51 David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine’s sword and drew it from the sheath. After he killed him, he cut(AV) off his head with the sword.(AW)

When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. 52 Then the men of Israel and Judah surged forward with a shout and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of Gath[c] and to the gates of Ekron.(AX) Their dead were strewn along the Shaaraim(AY) road to Gath and Ekron. 53 When the Israelites returned from chasing the Philistines, they plundered their camp.

54 David took the Philistine’s head and brought it to Jerusalem; he put the Philistine’s weapons in his own tent.
