Born Again to a Living Hope

(A)Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! (B)According to his great mercy, (C)he has caused us to be born again to a living hope (D)through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to (E)an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and (F)unfading, (G)kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded (H)through faith for a salvation (I)ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by (J)various trials, so that (K)the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes (L)though it is tested by (M)fire—may be found to result in (N)praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (O)Though you have not seen him, you love him. (P)Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining (Q)the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

10 Concerning this salvation, (R)the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring (S)what person or time[a] (T)the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating (U)when he predicted (V)the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 (W)It was revealed to them that (X)they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you (Y)by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, (Z)things into which angels long to look.

Called to Be Holy

13 Therefore, (AA)preparing your minds for action,[b] and (AB)being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, (AC)do not be conformed to the passions (AD)of your former ignorance, 15 but (AE)as he who called you is holy, you also be holy (AF)in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, (AG)“You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you (AH)call on him as Father who (AI)judges (AJ)impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves (AK)with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you (AL)were ransomed from (AM)the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but (AN)with the precious blood of Christ, like that of (AO)a lamb (AP)without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but (AQ)was made manifest (AR)in the last times for the sake of you 21 (AS)who through him are believers in God, (AT)who raised him from the dead and (AU)gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for (AV)a sincere brotherly love, (AW)love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 (AX)since you have been born again, (AY)not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through (AZ)the living and abiding word of God; 24 for

(BA)“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
    and the flower falls,
25 (BB)but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

And this word (BC)is the good news that was preached to you.

A Living Stone and a Holy People

(BD)So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. (BE)Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual (BF)milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have (BG)tasted that the Lord is good.

As you come to him, a living stone (BH)rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, (BI)you yourselves like living stones are being built up as (BJ)a spiritual house, to be (BK)a holy priesthood, (BL)to offer spiritual sacrifices (BM)acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:

(BN)“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
    a cornerstone chosen and precious,
(BO)and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

So the honor is for you who (BP)believe, but for those who (BQ)do not believe,

(BR)“The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone,”[c]

and

(BS)“A stone of stumbling,
    and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, (BT)as they were destined to do.

But you are (BU)a chosen race, (BV)a royal (BW)priesthood, (BX)a holy nation, (BY)a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you (BZ)out of darkness into (CA)his marvelous light. 10 (CB)Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Praise to God for a Living Hope

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!(A) In his great mercy(B) he has given us new birth(C) into a living hope(D) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,(E) and into an inheritance(F) that can never perish, spoil or fade.(G) This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,(H) who through faith are shielded by God’s power(I) until the coming of the salvation(J) that is ready to be revealed(K) in the last time. In all this you greatly rejoice,(L) though now for a little while(M) you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.(N) These have come so that the proven genuineness(O) of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire(P)—may result in praise, glory and honor(Q) when Jesus Christ is revealed.(R) Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him(S) and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.(T)

10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke(U) of the grace that was to come to you,(V) searched intently and with the greatest care,(W) 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ(X) in them was pointing when he predicted(Y) the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you,(Z) when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you(AA) by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.(AB) Even angels long to look into these things.

Be Holy

13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober,(AC) set your hope(AD) on the grace to be brought to you(AE) when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.(AF) 14 As obedient(AG) children, do not conform(AH) to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.(AI) 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;(AJ) 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”[a](AK)

17 Since you call on a Father(AL) who judges each person’s work(AM) impartially,(AN) live out your time as foreigners(AO) here in reverent fear.(AP) 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed(AQ) from the empty way of life(AR) handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood(AS) of Christ, a lamb(AT) without blemish or defect.(AU) 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world,(AV) but was revealed in these last times(AW) for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God,(AX) who raised him from the dead(AY) and glorified him,(AZ) and so your faith and hope(BA) are in God.

22 Now that you have purified(BB) yourselves by obeying(BC) the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply,(BD) from the heart.[b] 23 For you have been born again,(BE) not of perishable seed, but of imperishable,(BF) through the living and enduring word of God.(BG) 24 For,

“All people are like grass,
    and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25     but the word of the Lord endures forever.”[c](BH)

And this is the word that was preached to you.

Therefore, rid yourselves(BI) of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander(BJ) of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk,(BK) so that by it you may grow up(BL) in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.(BM)

The Living Stone and a Chosen People

As you come to him, the living Stone(BN)—rejected by humans but chosen by God(BO) and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built(BP) into a spiritual house[d](BQ) to be a holy priesthood,(BR) offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.(BS) For in Scripture it says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
    a chosen and precious cornerstone,(BT)
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”[e](BU)

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,(BV)

“The stone the builders rejected(BW)
    has become the cornerstone,”[f](BX)

and,

“A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”[g](BY)

They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.(BZ)

But you are a chosen people,(CA) a royal priesthood,(CB) a holy nation,(CC) God’s special possession,(CD) that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.(CE) 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God;(CF) once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
