22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for (A)a sincere brotherly love, (B)love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 (C)since you have been born again, (D)not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through (E)the living and abiding word of God; 24 for

(F)“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
    and the flower falls,
25 (G)but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

And this word (H)is the good news that was preached to you.

A Living Stone and a Holy People

(I)So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. (J)Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual (K)milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have (L)tasted that the Lord is good.

As you come to him, a living stone (M)rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, (N)you yourselves like living stones are being built up as (O)a spiritual house, to be (P)a holy priesthood, (Q)to offer spiritual sacrifices (R)acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:

(S)“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
    a cornerstone chosen and precious,
(T)and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

So the honor is for you who (U)believe, but for those who (V)do not believe,

(W)“The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone,”[a]

and

(X)“A stone of stumbling,
    and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, (Y)as they were destined to do.

But you are (Z)a chosen race, (AA)a royal (AB)priesthood, (AC)a holy nation, (AD)a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you (AE)out of darkness into (AF)his marvelous light. 10 (AG)Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

11 Beloved, I urge you (AH)as sojourners and exiles (AI)to abstain from the passions of the flesh, (AJ)which wage war against your soul.

22 Now that you have purified(A) yourselves by obeying(B) the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply,(C) from the heart.[a] 23 For you have been born again,(D) not of perishable seed, but of imperishable,(E) through the living and enduring word of God.(F) 24 For,

“All people are like grass,
    and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25     but the word of the Lord endures forever.”[b](G)

And this is the word that was preached to you.

Therefore, rid yourselves(H) of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander(I) of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk,(J) so that by it you may grow up(K) in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.(L)

The Living Stone and a Chosen People

As you come to him, the living Stone(M)—rejected by humans but chosen by God(N) and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built(O) into a spiritual house[c](P) to be a holy priesthood,(Q) offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.(R) For in Scripture it says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
    a chosen and precious cornerstone,(S)
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”[d](T)

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,(U)

“The stone the builders rejected(V)
    has become the cornerstone,”[e](W)

and,

“A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”[f](X)

They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.(Y)

But you are a chosen people,(Z) a royal priesthood,(AA) a holy nation,(AB) God’s special possession,(AC) that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.(AD) 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God;(AE) once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Living Godly Lives in a Pagan Society

11 Dear friends,(AF) I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,(AG) to abstain from sinful desires,(AH) which wage war against your soul.(AI)
