⁷ But if we walk in the light,^(A) as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all^[a] sin.^(B)

⁸ If we claim to be without sin,^(C) we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.^{(D) 9} If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins^(E) and purify us from all unrighteousness.^{(F) 10} If we claim we have not sinned,^(G) we make him out to be a liar^(H) and his word is not in us.^(I)

2 My dear children,^(J) I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate^(K) with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. ² He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins,^(L) and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.^(M)

¹⁶ If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life.^(A) I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death.^(B) I am not saying that you should pray about that.^{(C) 17} All wrongdoing is sin,^(D) and there is sin that does not lead to death.^(E)

¹⁸ We know that anyone born of God^(F) does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one^(G) cannot harm them.^(H)
