25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:

27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

10 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

And did all eat the same spiritual meat;

And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown(A) that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.(B) 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly;(C) I do not fight like a boxer beating the air.(D) 27 No, I strike a blow to my body(E) and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.(F)

Warnings From Israel’s History

10 For I do not want you to be ignorant(G) of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud(H) and that they all passed through the sea.(I) They were all baptized into(J) Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food(K) and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock(L) that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.(M)

25 And everyone who competes for the prize [a]is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for (A)an imperishable crown. 26 Therefore I run thus: (B)not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. 27 (C)But I discipline my body and (D)bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become (E)disqualified.

Old Testament Examples

10 Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under (F)the cloud, all passed through (G)the sea, all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, all ate the same (H)spiritual food, and all drank the same (I)spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies (J)were scattered in the wilderness.
