The Need for Self-Discipline
24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?(A) Run(B) in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown(C) that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.(D) 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly;(E) I do not fight like a boxer beating the air.(F) 27 No, I strike a blow to my body(G) and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.(H)

10 For I do not want you to be ignorant(I) of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud(J) and that they all passed through the sea.(K) 2 They were all baptized into(L) Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food(M) 4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock(N) that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.(O)
6 Now these things occurred as examples(P) to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters,(Q) as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”[a](R) 8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.(S) 9 We should not test Christ,[b](T) as some of them did—and were killed by snakes.(U) 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did(V)—and were killed(W) by the destroying angel.(X)
11 These things happened to them as examples(Y) and were written down as warnings for us,(Z) on whom the culmination of the ages has come.(AA) 12 So, if you think you are standing firm,(AB) be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation[c] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful;(AC) he will not let you be tempted[d] beyond what you can bear.(AD) But when you are tempted,[e] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

So they do it to obtain a perishable (E)wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 Therefore I (F)run in such a way as not to run aimlessly; I box in such a way, as [a]to avoid (G)hitting air; 27 but I strictly discipline (H)my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

10 For (I)I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our fathers were all (J)under the cloud and they all (K)passed through the sea; 2 and they all were (L)baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3 and they all (M)ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all (N)drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was [b]Christ. 5 Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased; for their dead bodies were (O)spread out in the wilderness.
6 Now these things happened as (P)examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as (Q)they indeed craved them. 7 Do not be (R)idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “(S)The people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to (T)play.” 8 Nor are we to commit sexual immorality, as (U)some of them [c]did, and (V)twenty-three thousand fell in one day. 9 Nor are we to put the Lord to the test, as (W)some of them [d]did, and were killed by the snakes. 10 Nor (X)grumble, as some of them [e]did, and (Y)were killed by the (Z)destroyer. 11 Now these things happened to them as an (AA)example, and (AB)they were written for our instruction, upon whom (AC)the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let the one who (AD)thinks he stands watch out that he does not fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you except something common to mankind; and (AE)God is faithful, [f]so He will not allow you to be (AF)tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
14 Therefore, my (AG)beloved, flee from (AH)idolatry.

25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
10 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat;
4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.
10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.
11 Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.
