Lawsuits Discouraged

Does any one of you, when he has a [a]case against [b]his neighbor, dare to go to law before the unrighteous and (A)not before the [c]saints? Or (B)do you not know that (C)the [d]saints will judge (D)the world? If the world is judged by you, are you not competent to form the smallest [e]law courts? (E)Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more matters of this life? So if you have law courts dealing with matters of this life, [f]do you appoint them as judges who are of no account in the church? (F)I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not among you anyone wise who will be able to decide between his (G)brothers and sisters, but brother goes to law with brother, and that before (H)unbelievers?

Actually, then, it is already a defeat for you, that you have lawsuits with one another. (I)Why not rather suffer the wrong? Why not rather be defrauded? On the contrary, you yourselves do wrong and defraud. And this to your (J)brothers and sisters!

Or (K)do you not know that the unrighteous will not (L)inherit the kingdom of God? (M)Do not be deceived; (N)neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor [g]homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor those habitually drunk, nor verbal abusers, nor swindlers, will (O)inherit the kingdom of God. 11 (P)Such were some of you; but you were (Q)washed, but you were (R)sanctified, but you were (S)justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and [h]in the Spirit of our God.

The Body Is the Lord’s

12 (T)All things are permitted for me, but not all things are of benefit. All things are permitted for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 (U)Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, however God will (V)do away with both [i]of them. But the body is not for sexual immorality, but (W)for the Lord, and (X)the Lord is for the body. 14 Now God has not only (Y)raised the Lord, but (Z)will also raise us up through His power. 15 (AA)Do you not know that (AB)your bodies are parts of Christ? Shall I then take away the parts of Christ and make them parts of a prostitute? [j](AC)Far from it! 16 Or (AD)do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, “(AE)The two shall become one flesh.” 17 But the one who joins himself to the Lord is (AF)one spirit with Him. 18 (AG)Flee sexual immorality. Every other sin that a person commits is outside the body, but the [k]sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or (AH)do you not know that (AI)your body is a [l]temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from [m]God, and that (AJ)you are not your own? 20 For (AK)you have been bought for a price: therefore glorify God in (AL)your body.

Teaching on Marriage

Now concerning the things about which you wrote, it is (AM)good for a man [n]not to touch a woman. But because of sexual immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband. The husband must fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise the wife also to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise the husband also does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. [o](AN)Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and [p]come together again so that (AO)Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. But this I say by way of concession, (AP)not of command. [q]Yet I wish that all [r]men were (AQ)even as I myself am. However, (AR)each has his own gift from God, one in this way, and another in that.

But I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is (AS)good for them if they remain (AT)even as I. But if they do not have self-control, (AU)let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

10 But to the married I give instructions, (AV)not I, but the Lord, that the wife is not to leave her husband 11 (but if she does leave, she must remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband is not to [s]divorce his wife.

12 But to the rest (AW)I say, not the Lord, that if any brother has an unbelieving wife, and she consents to live with him, he must not [t]divorce her. 13 And [u]if any woman has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not [v]divorce her husband. 14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through [w]her believing husband; for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are (AX)holy. 15 Yet if the unbelieving one is leaving, [x]let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called [y]us (AY)in peace. 16 For how do you know, wife, whether you will (AZ)save your husband? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

17 Only, (BA)as the Lord has assigned to each one, as God has called each, in this way let him walk. And (BB)so I direct in (BC)all the churches. 18 Was any man called when he was already circumcised? He is not to become uncircumcised. Has anyone been called in uncircumcision? (BD)He is not to be circumcised. 19 (BE)Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but what matters is (BF)the keeping of the commandments of God. 20 (BG)Each person is to remain in that [z]state in which he was called.

21 Were you called as a slave? Do not let it concern you. But if you are also able to become free, take advantage of that. 22 For the one who was called in the Lord as a slave, is (BH)the Lord’s freed person; likewise the one who was called as free, is (BI)Christ’s slave. 23 (BJ)You were bought for a price; do not become slaves of people. 24 Brothers and sisters, (BK)each one is to remain with God in that condition in which he was called.

25 Now concerning virgins, I have (BL)no command of the Lord, but I am offering direction as one who [aa](BM)by the mercy of the Lord is trustworthy. 26 I think, then, that this is good in view of the [ab]present (BN)distress, that (BO)it is good for a man [ac]to remain as he is. 27 Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be released. Are you released from a wife? Do not seek a wife. 28 But if you marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Yet such people as yourselves will have [ad]trouble in this life, and I am trying to spare you. 29 But this I say, brothers, (BP)the time has been shortened, so that from now on those who have wives should be as though they had none; 30 and those who weep, as though they did not weep; and those who rejoice, as though they did not rejoice; and those who buy, as though they did not possess; 31 and those who use the world, as though they did not (BQ)make full use of it; for (BR)the present form of this world is passing away.

32 But I want you to be free from concern. One who is (BS)unmarried is concerned about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord; 33 but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, 34 and his interests are divided. The woman who is unmarried, and the virgin, is concerned about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and spirit; but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how she may please her husband. 35 I say this for your own benefit, not to put a restraint on you, but [ae]to promote what is appropriate and to secure undistracted devotion to the Lord.

36 But if anyone thinks that he is acting dishonorably toward his virgin, if she is [af]past her youth and it ought to be so, let him do what he wishes, he is not sinning; let [ag]them marry. 37 But the one who stands firm in his heart, [ah]if he is not under constraint, but has authority [ai]over his own will, and has decided this in his own heart, to keep his own virgin, he will do well. 38 So then, both the one who gives his own virgin in marriage does well, and the one who does not give her in marriage will do better.

39 (BT)A wife is bound as long as her husband lives; but if her husband [aj]dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only (BU)in the Lord. 40 But (BV)in my opinion she is [ak]happier if she remains as she is; and I think that I also have the Spirit of God.

Take Care with Your Liberty

Now concerning (BW)food sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have (BX)knowledge. Knowledge [al](BY)makes one conceited, but love (BZ)edifies people. (CA)If anyone thinks that he knows anything, he has not yet (CB)known as he ought to know; but if anyone loves God, he (CC)is known by Him.

Therefore, concerning the eating of (CD)food sacrificed to idols, we know that an (CE)idol is [am]nothing at all in the world, and that (CF)there is no God but one. For even if (CG)there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, yet for us (CH)there is only one God, (CI)the Father, (CJ)from whom are all things, and we exist for Him; and (CK)one Lord, Jesus Christ, (CL)by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.

However, not all people (CM)have this knowledge; but (CN)some, being accustomed to the idol until now, eat food as if it were sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. Now (CO)food will not bring us [an]close to God; we are neither [ao]the worse if we do not eat, nor [ap]the better if we do eat. But (CP)take care that this [aq]freedom of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the (CQ)weak. 10 For if someone sees you, the one who has (CR)knowledge, dining in an idol’s temple, will his conscience, if he is weak, not be strengthened to eat (CS)things sacrificed to idols? 11 For through (CT)your knowledge the one who is weak (CU)is ruined, the brother or sister for whose sake Christ died. 12 (CV)And so, by sinning against the brothers and sisters and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin (CW)against Christ. 13 Therefore, (CX)if food causes my brother to sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause my brother to sin.

Paul’s Use of Freedom

Am I not (CY)free? Am I not an (CZ)apostle? Have I not (DA)seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not (DB)my work in the Lord? If I am not an apostle to others, at least I am to you; for you are the (DC)seal of my (DD)apostleship in the Lord.

My defense to those who examine me is this: [ar](DE)Do we not have a right to eat and drink? [as](DF)Do we not have a right to take along a [at]believing wife, even as the rest of the apostles and the (DG)brothers of the Lord, and [au](DH)Cephas? Or do only [av](DI)Barnabas and I have no right to refrain from [aw]working? Who at any time serves (DJ)as a soldier at his own expense? Who (DK)plants a vineyard and does not eat its fruit? Or who tends a flock and does not [ax]consume some of the milk of the flock?

I am not just asserting these things (DL)according to human judgment, am I? Or does the Law not say these things as well? For it is written in the Law of Moses: “(DM)You shall not muzzle the ox while it is threshing.” God is not concerned about (DN)oxen, is He? 10 Or is He speaking entirely for our sake? Yes, it was written (DO)for our sake, because (DP)the plowman ought to plow in hope, and the thresher to thresh in hope of sharing in the crops. 11 (DQ)If we sowed spiritual things in you, is it too much if we reap material things from you? 12 If others share the right over you, do we not more? Nevertheless, we (DR)did not use this right, but we endure all things (DS)so that we will cause no hindrance to the (DT)gospel of Christ. 13 (DU)Do you not know that those who (DV)perform sacred services eat the food of the temple, and those who attend regularly to the altar have their share [ay]from the altar? 14 So also (DW)the Lord directed those who proclaim the (DX)gospel to (DY)get their living from the gospel.

15 But I have (DZ)used none of these things. And I have not written these things so that it will be done so in my case; for it would be better for me to die than that. No one shall make (EA)my boast an empty one! 16 For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast about, for (EB)I am under compulsion; for woe to me if I do not preach (EC)the gospel. 17 For if I do this voluntarily, I have a (ED)reward; but if against my will, I have been entrusted with a (EE)commission nonetheless. 18 What, then, is my (EF)reward? That, when I preach the gospel, I may offer the gospel (EG)without charge, so as (EH)not to make full use of my right in the gospel.

19 For though I am (EI)free from all people, I have made myself (EJ)a slave to all, so that I may (EK)gain more. 20 (EL)To the Jews I became as a Jew, so that I might gain Jews; to those who are under the Law, I became as one under the Law, though (EM)not being under the Law myself, so that I might gain those who are under the Law; 21 to those who are (EN)without the Law, I became (EO)as one without the Law, though not being without the law of God but (EP)under the law of Christ, so that I might gain those who are without the Law. 22 To the (EQ)weak I became weak, that I might gain the weak; I have become (ER)all things to all people, (ES)so that I may by all means save some. 23 I do all things for the sake of the gospel, so that I may become a fellow partaker of it.

24 (ET)Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives (EU)the prize? (EV)Run in such a way that you may win. 25 Everyone who (EW)competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. So they do it to obtain a perishable (EX)wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 Therefore I (EY)run in such a way as not to run aimlessly; I box in such a way, as [az]to avoid (EZ)hitting air; 27 but I strictly discipline (FA)my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

Avoid Israel’s Mistakes

10 For (FB)I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our fathers were all (FC)under the cloud and they all (FD)passed through the sea; and they all were (FE)baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; and they all (FF)ate the same spiritual food, and all (FG)drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was [ba]Christ. Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased; for their dead bodies were (FH)spread out in the wilderness.

Now these things happened as (FI)examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as (FJ)they indeed craved them. Do not be (FK)idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “(FL)The people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to (FM)play.” Nor are we to commit sexual immorality, as (FN)some of them [bb]did, and (FO)twenty-three thousand fell in one day. Nor are we to put the Lord to the test, as (FP)some of them [bc]did, and were killed by the snakes. 10 Nor (FQ)grumble, as some of them [bd]did, and (FR)were killed by the (FS)destroyer. 11 Now these things happened to them as an (FT)example, and (FU)they were written for our instruction, upon whom (FV)the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let the one who (FW)thinks he stands watch out that he does not fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you except something common to mankind; and (FX)God is faithful, [be]so He will not allow you to be (FY)tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

14 Therefore, my (FZ)beloved, flee from (GA)idolatry. 15 I speak as to wise people; you then, judge what I say. 16 Is the (GB)cup of blessing which we bless not a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is the (GC)bread which we break not a sharing in the body of Christ? 17 Since there is one loaf, we (GD)who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf. 18 Look at [bf]the people of (GE)Israel; are those who (GF)eat the sacrifices not partners in the altar? 19 What do I mean then? That food sacrificed to idols is anything, or (GG)that an idol is [bg]anything? 20 No, but I say that things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they (GH)sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become partners with demons. 21 (GI)You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and (GJ)the table of demons. 22 Or do we (GK)provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not (GL)stronger than He, are we?

23 (GM)All things are permitted, but not all things are of benefit. All things are permitted, but not all things [bh](GN)build people up. 24 No one is to (GO)seek his own advantage, but rather that of his [bi]neighbor. 25 (GP)Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions, for the sake of conscience; 26 (GQ)for the earth is the Lords, and [bj]all it contains. 27 If (GR)one of the unbelievers invites you and you want to go, (GS)eat anything that is set before you without asking questions, for the sake of conscience. 28 But (GT)if anyone says to you, “This is meat sacrificed to idols,” do not eat it, for the sake of that one who informed you and for the sake of conscience; 29 Now by “conscience” I do not mean your own, but the other person’s; for (GU)why is my freedom judged by another’s conscience? 30 If I partake with thankfulness, (GV)why am I slandered about that for which I (GW)give thanks?

31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or (GX)whatever you do, do all things for the glory of God. 32 (GY)Do not offend Jews or Greeks, or (GZ)the church of God; 33 just as I also (HA)please everyone in all things, (HB)not seeking my own benefit but the benefit of the many, (HC)so that they may be saved.
