Love never fails. But where there are prophecies,(A) they will cease; where there are tongues,(B) they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part(C) and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes,(D) what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood(E) behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror;(F) then we shall see face to face.(G) Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.(H)

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.(I) But the greatest of these is love.(J)

Intelligibility in Worship

14 Follow the way of love(K) and eagerly desire(L) gifts of the Spirit,(M) especially prophecy.(N) For anyone who speaks in a tongue[a](O) does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them;(P) they utter mysteries(Q) by the Spirit. But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening,(R) encouraging(S) and comfort. Anyone who speaks in a tongue(T) edifies(U) themselves, but the one who prophesies(V) edifies the church. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,[b] but I would rather have you prophesy.(W) The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues,[c] unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.(X)

Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation(Y) or knowledge(Z) or prophecy or word of instruction?(AA) Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the pipe or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?(AB) So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 10 Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker is a foreigner to me.(AC) 12 So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit,(AD) try to excel in those that build up(AE) the church.

13 For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say.(AF) 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays,(AG) but my mind is unfruitful. 15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit,(AH) but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing(AI) with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding. 16 Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer,[d] say “Amen”(AJ) to your thanksgiving,(AK) since they do not know what you are saying? 17 You are giving thanks well enough, but no one else is edified.(AL)

18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.(AM)

20 Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children.(AN) In regard to evil be infants,(AO) but in your thinking be adults.

Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

14 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?

For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.

10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.

11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.

12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

26 Help me,(A) Lord my God;
    save me according to your unfailing love.
27 Let them know(B) that it is your hand,
    that you, Lord, have done it.
28 While they curse,(C) may you bless;
    may those who attack me be put to shame,
    but may your servant rejoice.(D)
29 May my accusers be clothed with disgrace
    and wrapped in shame(E) as in a cloak.

30 With my mouth I will greatly extol the Lord;
    in the great throng(F) of worshipers I will praise him.
31 For he stands at the right hand(G) of the needy,
    to save their lives from those who would condemn them.

26 Help me, O Lord my God: O save me according to thy mercy:

27 That they may know that this is thy hand; that thou, Lord, hast done it.

28 Let them curse, but bless thou: when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let thy servant rejoice.

29 Let mine adversaries be clothed with shame, and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a mantle.

30 I will greatly praise the Lord with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude.

31 For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul.
