Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,”(A) and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,”(B) except by the Holy Spirit.(C)

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit(D) distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone(E) it is the same God(F) at work.

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.(G) To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom,(H) to another a message of knowledge(I) by means of the same Spirit, to another faith(J) by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing(K) by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers,(L) to another prophecy,(M) to another distinguishing between spirits,(N) to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a](O) and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit,(P) and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

Unity and Diversity in the Body

12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body,(Q) so it is with Christ.(R) 13 For we were all baptized(S) by[c] one Spirit(T) so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free(U)—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.(V)

Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking [a](A)by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is [b](B)accursed”; and no one can say, “Jesus is (C)Lord,” except [c](D)by the Holy Spirit.

Now there are (E)varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. There are varieties of effects, but the same (F)God who works all things in all persons. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit (G)for the common good. For to one is given the word of (H)wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of (I)knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another (J)faith [d]by the same Spirit, and to another (K)gifts of [e]healing [f]by the one Spirit, 10 and to another the [g]effecting of [h](L)miracles, and to another (M)prophecy, and to another the [i](N)distinguishing of spirits, to another various (O)kinds of tongues, and to another the (P)interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, (Q)distributing to each one individually just as He [j]wills.

12 For just (R)as the body is one and yet has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though they are many, are one body, (S)so also is Christ. 13 For [k](T)by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether (U)Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to (V)drink of one Spirit.

So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.

A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice[a]; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge.[b] The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. 10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages,[c] while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.

One Body with Many Parts

12 The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. 13 Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles,[d] some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.[e]

Spiritual Gifts

12 1-3 What I want to talk about now is the various ways God’s Spirit gets worked into our lives. This is complex and often misunderstood, but I want you to be informed and knowledgeable. Remember how you were when you didn’t know God, led from one phony god to another, never knowing what you were doing, just doing it because everybody else did it? It’s different in this life. God wants us to use our intelligence, to seek to understand as well as we can. For instance, by using your heads, you know perfectly well that the Spirit of God would never prompt anyone to say “Jesus be damned!” Nor would anyone be inclined to say “Jesus is Master!” without the insight of the Holy Spirit.

4-11 God’s various gifts are handed out everywhere; but they all originate in God’s Spirit. God’s various ministries are carried out everywhere; but they all originate in God’s Spirit. God’s various expressions of power are in action everywhere; but God himself is behind it all. Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits. All kinds of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people! The variety is wonderful:

wise counsel

clear understanding

simple trust

healing the sick

miraculous acts

proclamation

distinguishing between spirits

tongues

interpretation of tongues.

All these gifts have a common origin, but are handed out one by one by the one Spirit of God. He decides who gets what, and when.

12-13 You can easily enough see how this kind of thing works by looking no further than your own body. Your body has many parts—limbs, organs, cells—but no matter how many parts you can name, you’re still one body. It’s exactly the same with Christ. By means of his one Spirit, we all said good-bye to our partial and piecemeal lives. We each used to independently call our own shots, but then we entered into a large and integrated life in which he has the final say in everything. (This is what we proclaimed in word and action when we were baptized.) Each of us is now a part of his resurrection body, refreshed and sustained at one fountain—his Spirit—where we all come to drink. The old labels we once used to identify ourselves—labels like Jew or Greek, slave or free—are no longer useful. We need something larger, more comprehensive.

Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
