Sectarianism Is Sin

10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, (A)that you all [a]speak the same thing, and that there be no [b]divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are [c]contentions among you. 12 Now I say this, that (B)each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of (C)Apollos,” or “I am of (D)Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” 13 (E)Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

14 I thank God that I baptized (F)none of you except (G)Crispus and (H)Gaius, 15 lest anyone should say that I had baptized in my own name. 16 Yes, I also baptized the household of (I)Stephanas. Besides, I do not know whether I baptized any other. 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, (J)not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.

Christ the Power and Wisdom of God(K)

18 For the [d]message of the cross is (L)foolishness to (M)those who are perishing, but to us (N)who are being saved it is the (O)power of God. 19 For it is written:

(P)“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”

20 (Q)Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the [e]disputer of this age? (R)Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the (S)wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For (T)Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, (U)to the Jews a [f]stumbling block and to the [g]Greeks (V)foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ (W)the power of God and (X)the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Glory Only in the Lord

26 For [h]you see your calling, brethren, (Y)that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many [i]noble, are called. 27 But (Z)God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the [j]base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence. 30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and (AA)righteousness and sanctification and redemption— 31 that, as it is written, (AB)“He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.”

Christ Crucified

And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the [k]testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you (AC)except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. (AD)I was with you (AE)in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching (AF)were not with persuasive words of [l]human wisdom, (AG)but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the (AH)power of God.

Spiritual Wisdom

However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God [m]ordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew; for (AI)had they known, they would not have (AJ)crucified the Lord of glory.

But as it is written:

(AK)“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

10 But (AL)God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the (AM)spirit of the man which is in him? (AN)Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but (AO)the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the [n]Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 (AP)But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. 16 For (AQ)“who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” (AR)But we have the mind of Christ.

Sectarianism Is Carnal

And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to (AS)babes in Christ. I fed you with (AT)milk and not with solid food; (AU)for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and [o]behaving like mere men? For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal?

A Church Divided Over Leaders

10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters,[a](A) in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you,(B) but that you be perfectly united(C) in mind and thought. 11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household(D) have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”;(E) another, “I follow Apollos”;(F) another, “I follow Cephas[b]”;(G) still another, “I follow Christ.”

13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul?(H) 14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus(I) and Gaius,(J) 15 so no one can say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (Yes, I also baptized the household(K) of Stephanas;(L) beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize,(M) but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom(N) and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Christ Crucified Is God’s Power and Wisdom

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness(O) to those who are perishing,(P) but to us who are being saved(Q) it is the power of God.(R) 19 For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”[c](S)

20 Where is the wise person?(T) Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age?(U) Has not God made foolish(V) the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world(W) through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save(X) those who believe.(Y) 22 Jews demand signs(Z) and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified:(AA) a stumbling block(AB) to Jews and foolishness(AC) to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called,(AD) both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God(AE) and the wisdom of God.(AF) 25 For the foolishness(AG) of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness(AH) of God is stronger than human strength.

26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called.(AI) Not many of you were wise(AJ) by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose(AK) the foolish(AL) things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not(AM)—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him.(AN) 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus,(AO) who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness,(AP) holiness(AQ) and redemption.(AR) 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[d](AS)

And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom(AT) as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.[e] For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.(AU) I came to you(AV) in weakness(AW) with great fear and trembling.(AX) My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words,(AY) but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,(AZ) so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.(BA)

God’s Wisdom Revealed by the Spirit

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature,(BB) but not the wisdom of this age(BC) or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.(BD) No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery(BE) that has been hidden(BF) and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age(BG) understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.(BH) However, as it is written:

“What no eye has seen,
    what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”[f]
the things God has prepared for those who love him—(BI)

10 these are the things God has revealed(BJ) to us by his Spirit.(BK)

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts(BL) except their own spirit(BM) within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit(BN) of the world,(BO) but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom(BP) but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.[g] 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God(BQ) but considers them foolishness,(BR) and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15 The person with the Spirit(BS) makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, 16 for,

“Who has known the mind of the Lord
    so as to instruct him?”[h](BT)

But we have the mind of Christ.(BU)

The Church and Its Leaders

Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit(BV) but as people who are still worldly(BW)—mere infants(BX) in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food,(BY) for you were not yet ready for it.(BZ) Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling(CA) among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,”(CB) are you not mere human beings?
