A Genealogy of the Returned Exiles

9 So all Israel was recorded in genealogies, and these are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel. And ^(A)Judah was taken into exile in Babylon because of their breach of faith. ²^(B)Now the first to ^(C)dwell again in their possessions in their cities were Israel, the priests, the Levites, and the ^(D)temple servants. ³And some of the people of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh lived in Jerusalem: ⁴Uthai the son of Ammihud, son of Omri, son of Imri, son of Bani, from the sons of ^(E)Perez the son of Judah. ⁵And of the Shilonites: Asaiah the firstborn, and his sons. ⁶Of the sons of Zerah: Jeuel and their kinsmen, 690. ⁷Of the Benjaminites: Sallu the son of Meshullam, son of Hodaviah, son of Hassenuah, ⁸Ibneiah the son of Jeroham, Elah the son of Uzzi, son of Michri, and Meshullam the son of Shephatiah, son of Reuel, son of Ibnijah; ⁹and their kinsmen according to their generations, ^(F)956. All these were heads of fathers' houses according ^(G)to their fathers' houses.

¹⁰^(H)Of the priests: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jachin, ¹¹and Azariah the son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, the ^(I)chief officer of the house of God; ¹²and Adaiah the son of Jeroham, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah, and Maasai the son of Adiel, son of Jahzerah, son of Meshullam, son of Meshillemith, son of Immer; ¹³besides their kinsmen, heads of their fathers' houses, 1,760, mighty men for the work of the service of the house of God.

¹⁴^(J)Of the Levites: Shemaiah the son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, of the sons of Merari; ¹⁵and Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal and Mattaniah the son of Mica, son of Zichri, son of Asaph; ¹⁶and Obadiah the son of Shemaiah, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun, and Berechiah the son of Asa, son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites.

¹⁷The gatekeepers were Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their kinsmen (Shallum was the chief); ¹⁸until then they were ^(K)in the king's gate on the east side as the gatekeepers of the camps of the Levites. ¹⁹Shallum the son of Kore, son of ^(L)Ebiasaph, son of Korah, and his kinsmen of his fathers' house, the ^(M)Korahites, were in charge of the work of the service, keepers of the thresholds of the tent, as their fathers had been in charge of the camp of the Lord, keepers of the entrance. ²⁰And ^(N)Phinehas the son of Eleazar was the chief officer over them in time past; the Lord was with him. ²¹^(O)Zechariah the son of Meshelemiah was gatekeeper at the entrance of the tent of meeting. ²²All these, who were chosen as gatekeepers at the thresholds, were 212. They were enrolled by genealogies in their villages. ^(P)David and Samuel ^(Q)the seer established them in their office of trust. ²³So they and their sons were in charge of the gates of the house of the Lord, that is, the house of the tent, as guards. ²⁴The gatekeepers were on the four sides, east, west, north, and south. ²⁵And their kinsmen who were ^(R)in their villages were obligated to come ^(S)in every seven days, in turn, to be with these, ²⁶for the four chief gatekeepers, who were Levites, were entrusted to be over ^(T)the chambers and the treasures of the house of God. ²⁷And they lodged around the house of God, for on them lay the duty of watching, and ^(U)they had charge of opening it every morning.

²⁸Some of them had charge of the utensils of service, for they were required to count them when they were brought in and taken out. ²⁹Others of them were appointed over the furniture and over all the holy utensils, also over the ^(V)fine flour, the wine, the oil, the incense, and the spices. ³⁰Others, of the sons of the priests, ^(W)prepared the mixing of the spices, ³¹and Mattithiah, one of the Levites, the firstborn of ^(X)Shallum the ^(Y)Korahite, was entrusted with ^(Z)making the flat cakes. ³²Also some of their kinsmen of the Kohathites had ^(AA)charge of the showbread, to prepare it every Sabbath.

³³Now these, the ^(AB)singers, the heads of fathers' houses of the Levites, were in the chambers of the temple free from other service, for they were on duty day and night. ³⁴These were heads of fathers' houses of the Levites, according to their generations, leaders. These lived in Jerusalem.

Saul's Genealogy Repeated

³⁵^(AC)In Gibeon lived the father of Gibeon, Jeiel, and the name of his wife was Maacah, ³⁶and his firstborn son Abdon, then Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab, ³⁷Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah, and Mikloth; ³⁸and Mikloth was the father of Shimeam; and these also lived opposite their kinsmen in Jerusalem, with their kinsmen. ³⁹^(AD)Ner fathered Kish, Kish fathered Saul, Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchi-shua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal. ⁴⁰And the son of Jonathan was ^(AE)Merib-baal, and Merib-baal fathered Micah. ⁴¹The sons of Micah: Pithon, Melech, Tahrea, and ^(AF)Ahaz.^[a] ⁴²And Ahaz fathered ^(AG)Jarah, and Jarah fathered Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri. And Zimri fathered Moza. ⁴³Moza fathered Binea, and ^(AH)Rephaiah was his son, Eleasah his son, Azel his son. ⁴⁴Azel had six sons and these are their names: Azrikam, Bocheru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan; these were the sons of Azel.

10 Woe to those who ^(A)decree iniquitous decrees,
    and the writers who ^(B)keep writing oppression,
²to turn aside the needy from justice
    and ^(C)to rob the poor of my people of their right,
that widows may be their spoil,
    and that they may make the fatherless their prey!
³What will you do on ^(D)the day of punishment,
    in the ruin that will come ^(E)from afar?
To whom will you flee for help,
    and where will you leave your wealth?
⁴Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners
    or fall among the slain.
^(F)For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.

Judgment on Arrogant Assyria

⁵Woe to Assyria, ^(G)the rod of my anger;
    the staff in their hands is my fury!
⁶Against a ^(H)godless nation I send him,
    and against the people of my wrath I command him,
to take ^(I)spoil and seize plunder,
    and to ^(J)tread them down like the mire of the streets.
⁷But he ^(K)does not so intend,
    and his heart does not so think;
but it is in his heart to destroy,
    and to cut off nations not a few;
⁸for he says:
^(L)“Are not my commanders all kings?
⁹^(M)Is not ^(N)Calno like ^(O)Carchemish?
    Is not ^(P)Hamath like ^(Q)Arpad?
    ^(R)Is not ^(S)Samaria like Damascus?
¹⁰As my hand has reached to ^(T)the kingdoms of the idols,
    whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
¹¹shall I not do to Jerusalem and ^(U)her idols
    ^(V)as I have done to Samaria and her images?”

¹²^(W)When the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, ^(X)he^[a] will punish the speech^[b] of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the boastful look in his eyes. ¹³^(Y)For he says:

“By the strength of my hand I have done it,
    and by my wisdom, for I have understanding;
I remove the boundaries of peoples,
    and plunder their treasures;
    like a bull I bring down those who sit on thrones.
¹⁴My hand has found like a nest
    the wealth of the peoples;
and as one gathers eggs that have been forsaken,
    so I have gathered all the earth;
and there was none that moved a wing
    or opened the mouth or chirped.”

¹⁵Shall ^(Z)the axe boast over him who hews with it,
    or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it?
As if a rod should wield him who lifts it,
    or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood!
¹⁶Therefore the Lord God of hosts
    will send wasting sickness among his ^(AA)stout warriors,
and under his glory ^(AB)a burning will be kindled,
    like the burning of fire.
¹⁷^(AC)The light of Israel will become a fire,
    and ^(AD)his Holy One a flame,
and ^(AE)it will burn and devour
    his thorns and briers ^(AF)in one day.
¹⁸The glory of ^(AG)his forest and of his ^(AH)fruitful land
    the Lord will destroy, both soul and body,
    and it will be as when a sick man wastes away.
¹⁹The remnant of the trees of his forest will be so few
    that a child can write them down.

The Remnant of Israel Will Return

²⁰^(AI)In that day ^(AJ)the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no more ^(AK)lean on him who struck them, but ^(AL)will lean on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. ²¹A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, ^(AM)to the mighty God. ²²^(AN)For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, ^(AO)only a remnant of them will return. ^(AP)Destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness. ²³For the Lord God of hosts will make a full end, as decreed, in the midst of all the earth.

²⁴Therefore thus says the Lord God of hosts: “O my people, ^(AQ)who dwell in Zion, ^(AR)be not afraid of the Assyrians when they strike with the rod and lift up their staff against you as ^(AS)the Egyptians did. ²⁵For ^(AT)in a very little while my fury will come to an end, and my anger will be directed to their destruction. ²⁶And ^(AU)the Lord of hosts will wield against them a whip, as when he struck ^(AV)Midian ^(AW)at the rock of Oreb. And his staff will be over the sea, and he will lift it ^(AX)as he did in Egypt. ²⁷And in that day ^(AY)his burden will depart from your shoulder, and ^(AZ)his yoke from your neck; and the yoke will be broken because of the fat.”^[c]

²⁸He has come to Aiath;
he has passed through ^(BA)Migron;
    at Michmash he stores ^(BB)his baggage;
²⁹they have crossed over ^(BC)the pass;
    at ^(BD)Geba they lodge for the night;
^(BE)Ramah trembles;
    ^(BF)Gibeah of Saul has fled.
³⁰Cry aloud, O daughter of ^(BG)Gallim!
    Give attention, O Laishah!
    O poor ^(BH)Anathoth!
³¹Madmenah is in flight;
    the inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety.
³²This very day he will halt at ^(BI)Nob;
    he will shake his fist
    at the mount of ^(BJ)the daughter of Zion,
    the hill of Jerusalem.

³³Behold, the Lord God of hosts
    ^(BK)will lop ^(BL)the boughs with terrifying power;
the great in height will be hewn down,
    and the lofty will be brought low.
³⁴He will cut down ^(BM)the thickets of the forest with an axe,
    and ^(BN)Lebanon will fall by the Majestic One.
