² Each of us should please our neighbors for their good,^(A) to build them up.^{(B) 3} For even Christ did not please himself^(C) but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”^[a](D)

¹¹ “Blessed are you when people insult you,^(C) persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.^{(D) 12} Rejoice and be glad,^(E) because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.^(F)

⁷ Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. ⁸ But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.^(A)

¹⁰ Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets^(A) who spoke in the name of the Lord. ¹¹ As you know, we count as blessed^(B) those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance^(C) and have seen what the Lord finally brought about.^(D) The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.^(E)
