³¹ But these are written that you may believe^[a](A) that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,^(B) and that by believing you may have life in his name.^(C)

⁵³ Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?^{(A) 54} But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled^(B) that say it must happen in this way?”

⁵⁴ When the centurion and those with him who were guarding^(A) Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”^(B)

³ With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account^(A) for you, most excellent^(B) Theophilus,^{(C) 4} so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.^(D)

¹⁷ The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life^(A)—only to take it up again. ¹⁸ No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.^(B) I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”^(C)

³⁷ Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father.^{(A) 38} But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”^(B)

⁴² I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here,^(A) that they may believe that you sent me.”^(B)

⁸ But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,”^[a](A) that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: ⁹ If you declare^(B) with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”^(C) and believe^(D) in your heart that God raised him from the dead,^(E) you will be saved.^(F)

5 ¹ Follow God’s example,^(A) therefore, as dearly loved children^{(B) 2} and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us^(C) and gave himself up for us^(D) as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.^(E)
