Exodus 33:19-34:7
New International Version
19 And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass(A) in front of you, and I will proclaim my name,(B) the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.(C) 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see(D) me and live.”
21 Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock(E) and cover you with my hand(F) until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”
The New Stone Tablets
34 The Lord said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones,(G) and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets,(H) which you broke.(I) 2 Be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai.(J) Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. 3 No one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain;(K) not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain.”
4 So Moses chiseled(L) out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the Lord had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands.(M) 5 Then the Lord came down in the cloud(N) and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord.(O) 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate(P) and gracious God, slow to anger,(Q) abounding in love(R) and faithfulness,(S) 7 maintaining love to thousands,(T) and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.(U) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished;(V) he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”(W)
Exodus 33:19-34:7
King James Version
19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.
20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
21 And the Lord said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
22 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:
23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
34 And the Lord said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest.
2 And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai, and present thyself there to me in the top of the mount.
3 And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount.
4 And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.
5 And the Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord.
6 And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
