The Beast from the Sea

13 And the dragon stood on the sand of the [a]seashore.

Then I saw a (A)beast coming up out of the sea, having (B)ten horns and (C)seven heads, and on his horns were (D)ten crowns, and on his heads were (E)blasphemous names. And the beast that I saw was (F)like a leopard, and his feet were like those of (G)a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of (H)a lion. And the (I)dragon gave him his power and his (J)throne, and great authority. I saw one of his heads as if it had been [b]fatally wounded, and his (K)fatal wound was healed. And the whole earth (L)was amazed and followed after the beast; they worshiped the (M)dragon because he (N)gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “(O)Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?” A mouth was given to him (P)speaking [c]arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for (Q)forty-two months was given to him. And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, (R)those who dwell in heaven.

It was also given to him to (S)make war with the [d]saints and to overcome them, and authority was given to him over (T)every tribe, people, language, and nation. All who (U)live on the earth will worship him, everyone (V)whose name has not been [e]written (W)since the foundation of the world in the (X)book of life of (Y)the Lamb who has been slaughtered.

While I was thinking about the horns, behold, (A)another horn, a little one, came up among them, and three of the previous horns were plucked out before it; and behold, [a]this horn possessed eyes like human eyes, and (B)a mouth uttering great boasts.

The Little Horn

And out of one of them came a rather (A)small horn which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the [a](B)Beautiful Land. 10 It grew up to the heavenly [b]lights, and some of the [c]lights, [d]that is, some of the (C)stars it threw down to the earth, and it (D)trampled them. 11 It even (E)exalted itself [e]to be equal with the [f]Commander of the army; and it removed the (F)regular sacrifice from Him, and the place of His sanctuary was overthrown. 12 And because of [g]an offense the army will be given to the horn along with the regular sacrifice; and it will (G)hurl truth to the ground and do as it pleases and be successful.

When the wrongdoers have [b]run their course,
A king will arise,
[c]Insolent and skilled in [d]intrigue.

And he will [e](A)destroy to an extraordinary degree
And be successful and do as he pleases;
He will [f]destroy mighty men and [g]the holy people.

He will make deceit a success by his [h]influence;

36 “Then the king will (A)do as he pleases, and he will exalt himself and (B)boast against every god and will (C)speak [a]dreadful things against the (D)God of gods; and he will be successful until the (E)indignation is finished, because that which is (F)determined will be done. 37 And he will show no regard for the [b]gods of his fathers or for the [c]desire of women, nor will he show regard for any other god; for he will boast against them all. 38 But [d]instead he will honor a god of fortresses, a god whom his fathers did not know; he will honor him with gold, silver, precious stones, and treasures. 39 And he will take action against the strongest of fortresses with the help of a foreign god; he will give great honor to [e]those who acknowledge him and will make them rulers over the many, and will parcel out land for a price.

40 “And at the (G)end time the (H)king of the South will wage war with him, and the (I)king of the North will (J)storm against him with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he will enter countries, (K)overflow them, and pass through. 41 He will also enter the [f](L)Beautiful Land, and many countries will fall; but these will be rescued out of his hand: Edom, (M)Moab, and the foremost of the sons of (N)Ammon. 42 Then he will reach out with his hand against other countries, and the land of Egypt will not escape. 43 But he will [g]gain control over the hidden treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; and (O)Libyans and (P)Ethiopians will follow at his [h]heels. 44 But rumors from the East and from the North will terrify him, and he will go out with great wrath to eliminate and [i]annihilate many. 45 And he will pitch the tents of his royal pavilion between the seas and the beautiful (Q)Holy Mountain; yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him.

(A)No one is to deceive you in any way! For it will not come unless the [a](B)apostasy comes first, and the (C)man of lawlessness is revealed, the (D)son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above [b](E)every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, (F)displaying himself as being God. Do you not remember that (G)while I was still with you, I was telling you these things? And you know (H)what restrains him now, so that he will be revealed in his time. For (I)the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only [c](J)He who now restrains will do so until [d]He is [e]removed. Then that lawless one (K)will be revealed, whom the Lord will eliminate (L)with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the (M)appearance of His [f]coming; that is, the one whose [g]coming is in accord with the activity of (N)Satan, with all power and false [h](O)signs and wonders, 10 and with [i]all the deception of wickedness for (P)those who perish, because they did not accept the love of (Q)the truth so as to be saved. 11 For this reason (R)God [j]will send upon them [k]a (S)deluding influence so that they will believe [l]what is false, 12 in order that they all may be [m]judged who (T)did not believe the truth, but [n](U)took pleasure in wickedness.
