A Man Cleansed

8 When He came down from the mountain, large crowds^(A) followed Him. ² Right away^(B) a man with a serious skin disease came up and knelt before Him,^(C) saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”

³ Reaching out His hand He touched him, saying, “I am willing; be made clean.” Immediately his disease was healed.^{[a] 4} Then Jesus told him, “See that you don’t tell anyone;^(D) but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses prescribed, as a testimony to them.”^(E)

Driving Out an Unclean Spirit

²¹ Then^(A) they went into Capernaum,^(B) and right away He entered the synagogue^(C) on the Sabbath^(D) and began to teach.^{(E) 22} They were astonished^(F) at His teaching^(G) because, unlike the scribes,^(H) He was teaching them as one having authority.

²³ Just then a man with an unclean^(I) spirit^(J) was in their synagogue.^(K) He cried out,^{[a] 24} “What do You have to do with us,^[b] Jesus—Nazarene?^(L) Have You come to destroy^(M) us? I know who You are—the Holy^(N) One of God!”^(O)

²⁵ But Jesus rebuked^(P) him and said, “Be quiet,^[c](Q) and come out of him!” ²⁶ And the unclean spirit convulsed him,^(R) shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him.

²⁷ Then they were all amazed,^(S) so they began to argue^(T) with one another, saying, “What is this? A new teaching^(U) with authority!^[d](V) He commands even the unclean^(W) spirits,^(X) and they obey Him.” ²⁸ News about Him then spread throughout the entire vicinity of Galilee.^(Y)

Healings at Capernaum

²⁹ As^(Z) soon as they left the synagogue,^(AA) they went into Simon^(AB) and Andrew’s^(AC) house^(AD) with James^(AE) and John.^{(AF) 30} Simon’s mother-in-law was lying in bed with a fever, and they told Him about her at once. ³¹ So He went to her, took her by the hand, and raised her up.^(AG) The fever^(AH) left her,^[e] and she began to serve^(AI) them.^(AJ)

³² When^(AK) evening came, after the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all those who were sick^(AL) and those who were demon-possessed.^{(AM) 33} The whole town was assembled at the door, ³⁴ and He healed^(AN) many who were sick with various diseases^(AO) and drove out^(AP) many demons.^(AQ) But He would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew Him.^(AR)

Preaching in Galilee

³⁵ Very^(AS) early in the morning, while it was still dark, He got up, went out, and made His way to a deserted place.^(AT) And He was praying^(AU) there. ³⁶ Simon^(AV) and his companions went searching for Him. ³⁷ They found Him and said, “Everyone’s looking for You!”

³⁸ And He said to them, “Let’s go on to the neighboring villages so that I may preach^(AW) there too. This is why I have come.” ³⁹ So He went into all of Galilee,^(AX) preaching in their synagogues^(AY) and driving out demons.

A Man Cleansed

⁴⁰ Then^(AZ) a man with a serious skin disease^(BA) came to Him and, on his knees,^[f](BB) begged Him: “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”^(BC)

⁴¹ Moved with compassion,^(BD) Jesus reached out His hand and touched^(BE) him. “I am willing,” He told him. “Be made clean.” ⁴² Immediately the disease^(BF) left him, and he was healed.^{[g] 43} Then He sternly warned^(BG) him and sent him away^(BH) at once, ⁴⁴ telling him, “See that you say nothing to anyone;^(BI) but go and show^(BJ) yourself to the priest,^(BK) and offer^(BL) what Moses prescribed for your cleansing,^(BM) as a testimony^(BN) to them.”

A Man Cleansed

¹² While He was in one of the towns, a man was there who had a serious skin disease all over him.^(A) He saw Jesus, fell facedown, and begged Him: “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”

¹³ Reaching out His hand, He touched him, saying, “I am willing; be made clean,” and immediately the disease left him. ¹⁴ Then He ordered him to tell no one: “But go and show yourself to the priest, and offer what Moses prescribed for your cleansing as a testimony to them.”
