⁵⁵ Now the chief priests and the whole council^[a] were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. ^56 (A)For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony ^(B)did not agree. ⁵⁷ And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, ^58 (C)“We heard him say, ^(D)‘I will destroy this temple ^(E)that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, ^(F)not made with hands.’” ⁵⁹ Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. ⁶⁰ And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”^{[b] 61} But ^(G)he remained silent and made no answer. ^(H)Again the high priest asked him, “Are you ^(I)the Christ, the Son of ^(J)the Blessed?” ⁶² And Jesus said, “I am, and ^(K)you will see the Son of Man ^(L)seated at the right hand of Power, and ^(M)coming with the clouds of heaven.” ⁶³ And the high priest ^(N)tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? ⁶⁴ You have heard ^(O)his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they ^(P)all condemned him as ^(Q)deserving death. ^65 (R)And some began ^(S)to spit on him and ^(T)to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him ^(U)with blows.

At last ^(C)two came forward ⁶¹ and said, “This man said, ^(D)‘I am able to ^(E)destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’” ⁶² And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”^{[b] 63 (F)}But Jesus remained silent. ^(G)And the high priest said to him, ^(H)“I adjure you by ^(I)the living God, ^(J)tell us if you are ^(K)the Christ, ^(L)the Son of God.” ⁶⁴ Jesus said to him, ^(M)“You have said so. But I tell you, from now on ^(N)you will see the Son of Man ^(O)seated at the right hand of Power and ^(P)coming on the clouds of heaven.” ⁶⁵ Then the high priest ^(Q)tore his robes and said, ^(R)“He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. ⁶⁶ What is your judgment?” They answered, ^(S)“He deserves death.”
