Deuteronomy 5:1-7

New International Version

The Ten Commandments^(A)

5 Moses summoned all Israel and said:

Hear, Israel, the decrees and laws^(B) I declare in your hearing today. Learn them and be sure to follow them. ²The Lord our God made a covenant^(C) with us at Horeb.^(D) ³It was not with our ancestors^[a] that the Lord made this covenant, but with us,^(E) with all of us who are alive here today.^(F) ⁴The Lord spoke^(G) to you face to face^(H) out of the fire^(I) on the mountain. ⁵(At that time I stood between^(J) the Lord and you to declare to you the word of the Lord, because you were afraid^(K) of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said:

⁶“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt,^(L) out of the land of slavery.^(M)

⁷“You shall have no other gods before^[b] me.

John 17:11-19

New International Version

¹¹I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world,^(A) and I am coming to you.^(B) Holy Father, protect them by the power of^[a] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one^(C) as we are one.^(D) ¹²While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by^[b] that name you gave me. None has been lost^(E) except the one doomed to destruction^(F) so that Scripture would be fulfilled.^(G)

¹³“I am coming to you now,^(H) but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy^(I) within them. ¹⁴I have given them your word and the world has hated them,^(J) for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.^(K) ¹⁵My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.^(L) ¹⁶They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.^(M) ¹⁷Sanctify them by^[c] the truth; your word is truth.^(N) ¹⁸As you sent me into the world,^(O) I have sent them into the world.^(P) ¹⁹For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.^(Q)
