1:3 sweep away man. See Matt. 13:41, 42. The coming judgment is compared to that of the Genesis flood by use of the phrases “man and beast” and “birds of the heavens” (cf. Gen. 6:7; 7:23). This prophecy will be consummated at the end of history (2 Pet. 3:3–7).
