Nebuchadnezzar replaced the cedar with the far more humble and lowly vine, a reference to his installation of Zedekiah on the throne in Jerusalem after deporting Jehoiachin (2 Kin. 24:15–17). Nebuchadnezzar had done much for Zedekiah, just as the vine had fertile soil, abundant water, and prospered.
