3:2 sons were born to David at Hebron. As the list that follows reveals, David took additional wives in Hebron. In 5:13–16, after David’s arrival in Jerusalem, yet more wives and concubines are added, and at least eleven more children will be born to David (see the cumulative list in 1 Chr. 3:1–9). While the narrator offers no explicit evaluation of David’s behavior (ancient Near Eastern kings commonly multiplied wives and children), it violates the standards of Deut. 17:17.
