  1. Sarai and Hagar

    Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had not borne him a child, but she had an Egyptian slave woman whose name was Hagar.
  2. So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Please have relations with my slave woman; perhaps I will obtain children through her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
  3. And so after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Abram’s wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian, her slave woman, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife.
  4. So Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be upon you! I put my slave woman into your arms, but when she saw that she had conceived, I was insignificant in her sight. May the Lord judge between you and me.”
  5. But Abram said to Sarai, “Look, your slave woman is in your power; do to her what is good in your sight.” So Sarai treated her harshly, and she fled from her presence.
  6. He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s slave woman, from where have you come, and where are you going?” And she said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”
  7. And every male among you who is eight days old shall be circumcised throughout your generations, including a slave who is born in the house or who is bought with money from any foreigner, who is not of your descendants.
  8. A slave who is born in your house or who is bought with your money shall certainly be circumcised; so My covenant shall be in your flesh as an everlasting covenant.
  9. Then Abraham took his son Ishmael, and all the slaves who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s household, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin on this very same day, as God had said to him.
  10. Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his female slaves, so that they gave birth to children.
  11. Therefore she said to Abraham, “Drive out this slave woman and her son, for the son of this slave woman shall not be an heir with my son Isaac!”
  12. But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed because of the boy and your slave woman; whatever Sarah tells you, listen to her, for through Isaac your descendants shall be named.
  13. And of the son of the slave woman I will make a nation also, because he is your descendant.”
  14. The Lord has greatly blessed my master, so that he has become rich; and He has given him flocks and herds, and silver and gold, and servants and slave women, and camels and donkeys.
  15. Descendants of Ishmael

    Now these are the records of the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s slave woman, bore to Abraham;
  16. Laban also gave his female slave Zilpah to his daughter Leah as a slave.
  17. Laban also gave his female slave Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her slave.
  18. Then she said, “Here is my female slave Bilhah: have relations with her that she may give birth on my knees, so that by her I too may obtain a child.”
  19. So she gave him her slave Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob had relations with her.
  20. And Rachel’s slave Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.
  21. When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her slave Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife.
  22. And Leah’s slave Zilpah bore Jacob a son.
  23. And Leah’s slave Zilpah bore Jacob a second son.
  24. Then Leah said, “God has given me my reward, because I gave my slave to my husband.” So she named him Issachar.
  25. So Laban went into Jacob’s tent, and into Leah’s tent, and into the tent of the two slave women, but he did not find them. Then he went out of Leah’s tent and entered Rachel’s tent.
